I don't think Mac gets as much attention as he deserves when it comes to his guitar playing. So clean, so smooth. His alternate picking and string skipping in this video look so effortless. I think his slacker vibe really disguises how polished of a guitar player he is. Dayum.

It’s just time and practice. You can totally learn to play this song nice and cleanly!
1) Don’t be hard on yourself.
2) Slow it down and really hear what he’s doing. Start slow.
3) learn each section by itself.
4) learn the transitions between sections by themselves.
5) when you’re learning the chords he’s playing, learn how to play them cleanly from the start. Pay close attention to what strings sound bad when you strum the chords, and mute the bad sounding strings. A lot of making most songs sound good is muting dissonant sounds, and learning how to use your fingers to mute is nearly as important as learning where to fret.
6) start slow with learning the string skipping parts. I think it helps to just practice that skill by itself with some of the chords of the song in a loop.
7)listen carefully to the strumming patterns and copy them.

Never in my life have I ever found the words "okie dokie" so attractive.
For some reason it's easy to overlook this mate's guitar abilities, but this is quite impressive. He's holding a bass rhythm while also playing melody notes on higher strings. And it's also a very stylish song with whimsical lyrics. A true original!

@user-ue6qg9ek3l in your opinion, when would you say he went downhill? My favorite work from him was his first album and demo album. I liked salad days but there were so many songs on "2" that were legendary. Dreamin and Dreamin Slow are goated.

2013 was such a nice chill year for me, my last year as a middle schooler, last time being 14, and many good memories of being a kid.
I was a junior in high school...I fucking hated high school
C# G# C# F G# C# is the correct tuning; PROVIDED you put a capo on the 2nd fret.
But by putting a capo on the second fret, like Mac has done in this video, you have shifted the tuning to D# A# D# G A# D#.
Which is miraculously half a step up from Open D tuning (DADF#AD).
So yes, you can tune to open D; PROVIDED you put a capo on FIRST fret and play everything the same relative to capo position.
It is in open D, but he uses the A4 = 432Hz tuning.
just asking, will it work at normal tuning?

If anyone's looking for the actual tuning to this video. It's C# G# C# F G# C# . Not Open D. Idk why people think it sounds right in Open D cause it's not even close. MartErpco was the only one in the comments who got this right, not sure why he hasn't got any likes on his comment but the false open d tuning comments did.
Excuse me mister, but it is in open D, just that his A4 = 432Hz, and we are used to A4 = 440 Hz. It is believed that the 432Hz tuning sounds a lot richer.
