I Bought A Broken Nintendo GameCube On eBay...Can We Fix It?

  • Today I wanted to take some time to check out a Nintendo GameCube I ordered on eBay that was as is. The description says it was not reading games and what sounded like an easy fix turned into a bit more work since it turned out to have significant water damage inside. Can we fix it?

      Exactly. I know people like to deny that Nintendo consoles are for kids or are a "kiddie console" but the fact of the matter is plenty of kids owed them and used and abused the heck out of them. Same thing with literally any of their other Home consoles and or Portables. ( though I must say if you're getting a ten-year-old a switch you got too much disposable income,yeesh!)

      Gamecube was actually more powerful than the PS2, with the xbox being the most powerful for that gen.
      Didnt own a Gamcube till later ( had the PS2 early on) but still, my friends and I always played Melee, Double Dash, Viewtful Joe, Res4, Wind Waker/TP and of course Super Monkey ball as well:)

    • @khaledalhosani1409
      @khaledalhosani1409 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      SirReznor yes it was more powerful! I remember trying Batman Vengeance (one of my first game cube purchases) on Game Cube and then seeing it on my friends PS2 and it looked better and somehow smoother (If I recall correctly ) on gamecube. However, some titles like need for speed, Def Jam FFNY had some features cut due to the disk size, sometimes it’s audio files, others textures or details. It’s amazing how Nintendo was able to squeeze every ounce of the console power and disk size. :D

    I have been working on pre-PS3, X360 gaming consoles for about 10 years now. One thing that continues to amaze me is how durable these things are! Ive received consoles that I was told had been stored in less than idea conditions, open to the elements storage sheds, wet, moldy basements, attics with no venelation, etc. Unless they were literally standing in water or crushed by something heavy most still worked! And those that didnt worked great after a good cleaning or minor part replacement.

    I got a black Gamecube on ebay that was advertised as non-working, for parts only; it was about as rusty as this one, but before I opened it up I popped a game in just to see how it did, and it booted right up!
    What worked well for me to clean it up was DeOxit; I soaked q-tips in it and scrubbed away the rust on motherboard edge and much of the metal with that, and it worked great. For the rest of the motherboard, drive board and power board I sprayed DeOxit over them and let them sit overnight.
    I sanded the rest of the rust off the metal, used a magic eraser on the outside of the case to get rid of scuffs, and treated the case with Macguire's vinyl & rubber cleaner to shine it up; still works and looks fantastic to this day.

    Just bought a broken GameCube (not water damaged) with the same issue. Thought it was the drive motor, but if the laser doesn't detect anything right off the bat it won't spin the drive at all. Seems to be the most common issue. You can recalibrate the drive with that little screw at the bottom of the board, or just replace the laser. It's wild how hardy this system is.

    What he didn't do and not even mentioned here but is kind of important when equipping a new laser, removing the short circuit protection on the gamecubes laser assembly ribbon cable. There is a tiny solder blob close to the ZIF end of the ribbon cable which shorts two traces, this should be either properly removed via a soldering iron or alternatively by cutting the correct trace.

    You should use the front piece and button from the old casing and paint them black to match the rest of the Gold/Black Starlight Casing. That would look sweet!

    Nice job, dude. Never seen a legit gold Gamecube shell before. I probably would have just cleaned the rusty metal plate and maybe sprayed it with some gold rustoleum.
