    This is the MOST helpful video I’ve seen. My 11 week old puppy gets so mouthy that it has made me angry - I put her in time out. She’s made me cry on more than one occasion because I don’t know what to do and felt like I had a horrible dog.
    I’m going to try this because it makes sense. She’s so reactive - EVERYTHING she wants to goes for with her mouth. Not aggressively but just to play, but she gets SOO worked up. Thank you for this

    So glad I found this video! We have a 13 week old Shiba Inu pup who’s very mouthy. She does not enjoy being pet and immediately starts biting hands, feet, arm, ankles! We’re hoping we can improve her behavior because our other dogs do not enjoy her high energy 😅 she does get fussy and begins to bark we tell her no. She’s very good at sitting so I’m hopeful by working with her everyday we can get rid of her bad habit of being very aggressive and bitey.

      Shiba 'generally' aren't dogs that really like a lot of handling; and usually prefer pets on their own terms. Good luck! They're a handful. :)

    Hello. This video has helped. I have a 10 week female doberman that is just like this puppy. Biting my pants, hands, blankets, leash, can't be petted. It's my first dog and I have been going nuts and could not find my exact issue. Looks like I will need tons of treats though and worry that will keep her from eating regular food. I will watch some of your other videos too because this has been so difficult for my first time out.

      We have a 10 week old Boxer who nips and bites at hands, feet shoes, etc. Can't even walk him properly becuz the majority of the walk is trying to get him to stop trying to bite my feet, shoes, and trying to change directions in order to redirect his attention, then he gets tangled in my feet/walk, I have to stop, and then he thinks it's a game. Geez. Becoming very frustrated. How did this work out for your Boxer, Erin Janzen?

    I've got a very mouthy and growly bull terrier puppy. She isn't even 8weeks yet, got her at 7weeks, and the thought of giving her up was already crossing my mind because of the aggressive attitude she has. She will go at our feet and pants, and will get FURIOUS when we try to remove ourselves from her grasp. She will also sometimes catch an attitude in the middle of playing with my two other dogs, who are bigger than her now, but not for long, so that had me worried. I have a trainer who works with though breeds (like malinois, gsd, bull terriers, etc) coming over tomorrow to see what the problem is, I'm going to show her your video to see if this method would be a good way to start.

    Outstanding! I disagree with the Suppression of Growling tho. one in this case, it's play/prey behavior. 2. It's also a Warning system. An owner may end up with a Biter, no warning.

    • @RuffBeginningsRehab
      @RuffBeginningsRehab  8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +Gerard Calvey So if it's not in the case of play, you let your dogs growl at you when they want? That is a dangerous thing to let a dog continue to do. Especially around kids. If a dog growls at you people should know that that is a warning, but to let the dog continue to do it when they want leads into them getting edgier about it, bolder about when and how much they growl, leads to guarding things like toys and food with growling. My dogs and the many dogs with people/dog aggressive issues I work with are not allowed to growl at people and if they are not allowed to growl they stop biting them as well. I don't just suppress the growling, I make the growling an unwanted behavior to do for the dog, and calm the state of mind of the dog so there are no ticking time bombs. It is a well rounded program for aggressive issues. You are talking about people who just aren't doing it right and just correct for growling but have no other protocol, that is what leads to the biting without growling. And honestly, most of the dogs I have worked with or met don't growl anyway before a bite, they go silent and still. Then through training they will start to growl here and there because they are actually finding different levels of dealing with stress. We work through them all and allowing them to growl when they want is not an option. But play is a different matter, they can growl if it comes naturally to them to do so. The difference with this pup is the play will be kept low key for a while so he doesn't get too amped up because that led to some of the situations where he would bite.

    Great video, I've been using some of these techniques the last few days and already see an improvement in our 4.5lb 12 week old Havanese puppy. You mention the games to avoid playing with an aggressive puppy (and they all apply, chase, tug, wrestling - they all get him growling in 10 seconds). Can you please suggest some games that won't get him excited and growling? We need to burn off energy and he's still learning to walk on his leash. Fetch seems to work for a little while but he'll even growl at the ball.

    Hi, my name is Lynn. My 12 week old puppy will not redirect with toys. She will leave it with a command and a treat but goes right back to pulling pant legs and grabbing feet. This goes on and on and she will not stop the behavior. Do I tell her to leave it each time, do I say anything to her? How do I get her to stop going after my feet and pant legs when I’m doing what I’m supposed to do in her training. Thanks Lynn. Friday, Feb 18.

How do I get this learning to transfer over to everyone my pup comes into contact with?

    • @RuffBeginningsRehab
      @RuffBeginningsRehab  ปีที่แล้ว

      You probably have worked it out by now, but that comes with training a valuable No and do this instead. So a no to stop a behavior and then an alternative behavior/obedience to reward over and over again so it is chosen more easily over time.

    My pup is getting very aggressive, yikes! She has learned that when I finally get her to stop doing the bad thing, she will get a treat, so she keeps doing the bad to get the treat.

    • @FiremanSketch
      @FiremanSketch 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Critter Crazy perfect example why you don't use food/treats to train. It can reinforce negative behavior (as you are realizing) and your dog views you strictly as a food source. It's quite possible to train without a single treat, only positive reinforcement.

She do still bite a bit there and there. But when I stop moving and tell her no, she stop right away now. At a little time when she do bite down hard, I ignore her now and give her a time out in her kennel for a short time. She’s doing better

      simple...I didn't think he'd turn around so quickly. He is VERY food motivated so all I had to do was some sit and food work and he started to understand that if I block him and he sits he gets food. I do have several puppy biting videos where you can see more of the process, just didn't get it with this one. Check out puppy playlist and look for anything with biting. :) Hopefully some of those will give you a better idea.

He’s about a year and a half old and I’m afraid that it might be too late to train him to be a good dog. He can tend to be aggressive when it comes to stuff he has. If he has a sock or underwear and we try to grab it from him he snarls and nips at us. He’s given my sister many good bites! But he is a very sweet dog and he loves us and cuddles. It would be a shame to have to get rid of him! Any advice?

      When he is biting something n not letting go when i try to take it away from him. I just either lift the dog, then whatever was in his mouth.. he drops it in awe. Or i just tell him BYE few times & make as if im leaving(door knob grab..) his attention then gets on me.. he doesnt want me to leave..
      I guess his struggling with that "cloth" is simply playtime for him. But yes he prefers human more so he'll focus on you... try this. And then as soon as he drops that cloth. Tell him good boy or whatever praise you normally say. He'll understand you like the part him leaving that thing. Not holding on. Im a beginner. I just got a dog in my whole life never really had one.. just feel he is the rebirth of someone i might have known.. and so i always have the trust that he will never hurt me. Call me naive but its just my belief.. like i believe in a non tangible/transparent God. I also believe in him in same way. Just pet him at the right time/treat him at the right moment/praise. As soon as he leaves that. For few days, few weeks. It will be fully ok.
      Courage, your beginner trainer. 😇 also i forgot to mention.. i had a difficult life, been hurt baselessly by few i trusted.. so i approach my dog with my sadness on my sleeves. I just believe he feels it.. so when during playing and accidently he fondly v lightly gently bites my hand.. i act hurt and let a small cry.. then he quickly grabs my hand and licks it in guilt and sadness. He feels your pain. Just love him. 😊

      Just a few sessions of working on sit and this was the first time adding in the blocking distractions. So 3/4 sessions of working on him sitting and waiting for food and then building on the blocking and the other aspects in part 2. He was already very food motivated and skipped breakfast to be extra...but some dogs you have to work longer to build drive. If he wasn't focused on food then he would be on leash and I'd correct for out of control behavior or have pet corrector on me if he had an outburst (still on leash)

The animal shelter gal also try to get him back in his dog kennel to take him back! No luck! My dog and best friend of 11 years recently passed away. My boyfriend has a new puppy, and Ive been trying to pet the puppy and be nice to it (when I get sad and miss my own dog, I go over to pet the puppy and get some love and affection but she attacks me). Its gotten so bad that she and I cant be in the same room together because she attacks me so bad. Her teeth are so sharp, idk what to do. I miss my own dog so much, and I try to give love to this new puppy but she HATES ME. Idk why, Ive always been a huge animal lover but she just hates me. Shes never let me pet her because every time i try, she bites me and will NOT let go, i literally have to pry my finger out of her mouth with my other hand. I just adopted a 7 weeks old rottwailer mix and she was really shy at first but now is kind of getting too impulsive, today she wanted to eat my cat's food and my cat gave her a soft warning with her paw as she always does with my other dogs but the new pup reacted aggressively. It scared me cause soon the pup is gonna outgrow the size of my cats and she might act dangerous, how do I stop that behavior? my other two dogs get along totally fine with the cats, they are like best buds.

She is 9 weeks now. I feel like Im just treading water with potty training it seems we are making no progress even though we started at 3-4 weeks it’s like she is still peeing in the house the same amount as then any tips on potty training I believe I already watched your video on it.

    I wish there had been a "before" video just to see how bad this little guy was, mostly to give myself hope since my puppy hasn't been reacting all that much to our first session with this despite being tremendously food-driven! I guess our problem is that once puppy is in that "let's play" mentality, he becomes a furry alligator and just jumps, nips, growls and barks, refusing to listen like he normally does. He has a pretty strong sit and stay under normal conditions, but boy is it impossible to get him to listen once he gets his crazy spells. I also notice that he acts relatively calm inside the house but the nippy behavior comes out whenever we go to the yard to play, which leads me to believe he's just trying really hard to get my attention so he can get rid of all that pent up energy in a larger area. I will try another session, this time with a higher value treat and I'll check back in just to update on the process. Wish me luck!

    • @JtjHh
      @JtjHh 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey any updates with your puppy? I just got a kelpie cross blue heeler and I'm in the exact same situation! Hopefully he grows out of it, but he never listens without treats and when in his "mood" I can't stop him

    • @김민석-r9r5u
      @김민석-r9r5u 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@JtjHh First and foremost, time fixes most of the unbearable behaviors, so don't lose hope! My puppy is 7 months now and, although no angel, he improved DRAMATICALLY after I realized both what was triggering his hyperactive bursts AND which treats were powerful enough to make him listen and work for them.
      One of my mistakes was lowering myself down to his level because he would always want to jump over me and scratch/bite, so I simply opted for remaining on my feet and only ever rewarding him once he achieved a lengthy "sit" or "lie down". If your puppy struggles with this and tries to continue nipping, there's this fantastic method called "reverse timeout" where you will halt the activity and leave the puppy alone, go to another room etc to show him that all engagement will end if he starts acting up. Sooner or later they get it and, paired up with a high value treat (I used chicken, bits of sausage or bits of cheese), they choose to sit/lie down or stay calm expecting a reward.
      What worked for us in the yard, since he would always jump on me when we went out to play, was to teach him a very strong sit by having a high value treat, running around so he'd chase me, and then turn around and order a "sit" before he even thought on jumping. If he sat, I would give him several treats in a row and then repeat. Eventually he understood that I'd rather have him sit to "greet me" or before any play.
      Kelpies are very energetic breeds that LOVE having a job to perform, so I have no doubt in my mind that your pup will learn quickly and work hard in order to get a reward. In the meantime, I suggest you continue with the impulse control training from this video, since it's extremely useful yet somehow underrated here on YT. I wish you the best of luck, and don't forget to update too!

      Two possible reasons...genetics or a very confused frustrated puppy or some combination of both. Asap go through a check list...crate trained, waiting calmly to come out of crate, working for his three meals a day with obedience, rarely being held and snuggled, working for pets and rewards, crate 18-20 hours a day if he is only 9 weeks old, etc.

      Charli Beans seriously thanks for the follow up. I always read comments to see how people make out and never come across anything. Im on my second cattle dog (9 months old) and he has a huge play drive and wont stop biting while playing. Im going to try these techniques. Do you have any other advice to recommend with a herding breed?

    • @charlibeans930
      @charlibeans930 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cuttinthruchaos hi good luck.
      I used this video and did lots of the Zac George videos as well. The Karen Overall relaxation protocol is amazing if your dog is super high energy, I never did the full thing or did it in order, but just sorta followed the principals. Just little things like rewarding pup for settled behaviours, was great. I also kept containers of pre chopped dog treats in every room, at both ends of the hallway (where she’d herd the most).
      She used to be so nippy when we first got her- we worked on a really solid “leave it” “let go”. If we were playing tug a war or something And she’d start getting to amped up I would let go of the toy and stop moving (so it’s boring) say “gentle” then try again, keep playing while she was playing appropriately then stop again if she got out of control.
      Also you could try having two toys. So if they’re super persistent with one toy or won’t bring it back with fetch, get another toy and interact with them, then switch back and forth.
      Now she’s two years old and she’s such a great dog. I think once dogs get comfortable they start to sort of mimic your behaviour/activities. Say if I’m sick and mostly just vegging my dog while just chill out in front of the tv with me,if I’m energetic she’ll be energetic.
      Hope that helps at all! Good luck! It’s a challenge but it’ll be so so worth it 💕💕

    • @charlibeans930
      @charlibeans930 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The other thing we did was work on really gentle treat taking. So having a treat in my hand and showing her and keeping my fist kinda closed so she could see it/lick it but not chomp it out of my hands. Then do a “gentle” command, then when she’d lick it, or gently try and nuzzle it release treat.
      Or in earlier stages show her the treat hiding inhand, do a “leave it” then once she stopped trying to get it I’d give her a treat with the other hand

I didn't get a chance to show the before because as soon as he learned sit for food, he'd choose that over his bad behaviors most of the time. some pups don't have that level of food/working drive without work put into it. Superb content! Thank you! I think I've watched every "puppy biting' video on youtube and this is THE one that showed me what I needed to know. I've had a 10-week old Blue Heeler for 2 weeks, and he has become extremely "mouthy and growly," basically attacking my boyfriend and I. I have felt like a complete failure as a puppy parent. We tried re-direction, acting wounded, leaving the room he is in, and calming him, but nothing worked. Today, I replicated the training sessions in this video 2X and he caught on quickly. The next time he started lunging at my clothes while we were playing, I said "no" and "sit," and I suddenly had a non-threatening, happy pup frozen in front of me, looking expectantly into my eyes for a treat. So, yes, I'm keeping treats on me at all times that he his awake, but I feel so much progress and hope. I'm thankful for this content. Thanks again!

Also, she is going through a really bad puppy biting stage and I don’t know what to do at this point. We have so many toys for her and she will play with them but eventually she gets bored of her toys and would rather play with my appendages. She understands no I believe because she barks at me when i say it. Will this kind of training help with this? I think one of the major factors contributing to the behaviour is that she is super hyper, and although I spend almost all my day with her even though thats difficult because I'm a student, and play with her and take her out, she just never tires out... Really helpful video! Best one I’ve seen on this topic. My puppy is flawless when he knows that there’s a promise of treats, but as soon as he knows I don’t have any more treats he goes back to biting and growling. Have done about 2 weeks of training on my 6mo. old puppy. Any tips?

    Hi. After i watched your videos. I have been struggle of my 11weeks old Dachs. He has the ' Puppy Impulse Control' problem. He just all of the sudden started from last week..it is getting worst. I tried out your method today and he seems get it..then after i took him outside the yard work on the leash with him..which is not working for me :( So we went back inside the house and work on the impulse control again..This time it's not working at all..he just keep going after me and growling on me..he acts very aggressive and keep biting my pants plus growling on me. I know i just have to keep practise with him. Any advice that you can give me pls.

I did start with learning sit from the beginning that helped when I started using the instructions with this video since he sits on command almost all the time

      Then add a leash and do firmer blocking. They have to respect taking food or they don't get food yet. Check out our puppy playlist, find most recent and work backwards.

    I just adopted a 6 month old puppy that punctures skin due to this behavior not being corrected early on. I have been working with his each morning for a couple of hours & a lot each weekend. My arms, belly, & legs are very bruised & punctured all over. It is so important for people when you have a sweet cuddly puppy that has limited teeth to not encourage this behavior. Few people would be willing to take the beating to get them to bring back the journey of a great dog

    Thanks so much for this video. But is it really ok to treat the dogs so much? I mean did you use part of his food or real treats? Thanks!

    • @RuffBeginningsRehab
      @RuffBeginningsRehab  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shuo Cheng To start off with, real treats that are healthy like boiled chicken. If that didn't motivate him I'd use lunch meat. Yes, it's fine for the dog to have lots of treats if you cut back on what they eat for dinner so they don't add weight and more importantly it's fine because a couple weeks of hard core treat training for a healthy state of mind is definitely worth it. Please keep in mind that he really isn't getting that much though. For 15 minutes of this he might have had a piece of boiled chicken half the size of my thumb, so it really isn't a ton. The key is to create tiny tiny pieces so they are just getting a taste most of the time. When my clients by small training treats like zukes, I tell them to put them on a cutting board and chop them up :) Please remember that you only use these high value treats until you have good control of what is happening, then you can try regular treats, and eventually kibble. Just remember if you up the stimulation (like going to a new park or something) bring out higher value treats again.

      +Shuo Cheng With an escalated issue here...I use treats for several days (but by treats I mean boiled chicken or lunchmeat...not store bought) then I wean them to working with their daily kibble.

    What do u mean by a very strong sit?? I have a mixed yorkie and minature teddy bear..He is 14 weeks and very very aggressive well not aggressive just very playful but bites when he’s so excited and growls. I know he’s not trying to be mean but it’s to the point where it’s everyday..Is there anyway I can get your email address and show U what I’m talking about. I really need to train him because we will be having a infant in this house in July so he has to be trained or I can not keep him around baby at all because when he gets so excited I’m afraid he’s going to bite my grand baby just to play ..

It’s a slow process for me but I keep putting his toys in his mouth everytime he does it. He gets bored fast! Idk what else to do
