  • In this video ... we look at the first of 10 inks from the Jacques Herbin Premium Fountain Pen Ink Collection (Standard Full Line) - the color is Gris de Houle - and it is a beautiful medium grey with excellent flow and a very visible, pleasing shade of grey. My sample was sent to me free of charge from Goulet Pens with no request to review. All opinions about the ink are mine.
    In the video I show you how this ink looked in 3 nibs on 5 paper types plus we look at chromatography and the result of the water/bath test (20 minutes submerged in a room temperature water bath). I also try out the Nick Stewart ink art technique on this ink at the end of the video.
    New for this series: I have replaced the Serendipity with a Jinhao X750 with a Goulet Broad nib. I did this to try it out and see if I could get a bit more consistency in my writing samples. So far, so good! I may replace the Lamy Vista/Fine nib with a #6 Fine nib at some point, however, this is what I have to work with now so I'm sticking with it.
    Here is a link to the ink (in the USA it's only available at Goulet Pens):
    www.gouletpens...
    The sample set of all 10 of the inks we'll be looking at in October is available here:
    www.gouletpens...
    Thank you for watching! I'll be releasing ink reviews (for this series) every few days until we've covered all 10 inks. Other content from me will be published between these ink reviews because I have many things I'm eager to show you! Please drop any requests for the colors you'd most like to see first/next (after the brown one) in the comment section below. I'm planning to do the brown one next (Terre d' Ombre). Big thank you to The Goulet Pen Company for providing these samples!

    Yes!! The gray I’ve been looking for....not too dark, not too light....and I love JHerbin. Thanks!

      Hi Geslina! I've never forgotten this ink - it was so well behaved and just the right shade of grey!

    Your ink profiles are so thorough...it was a smart move on Goulet’s part to send you these to review, kudos to Goulet Pens for recognizing how great of a job you do. I think I might buy this one. I’ve been on the fence on the Noodler’s Lexington Gray. I like Noodler’s Inks but they can be temperamental sometimes.

      Thank you! I have been trying out a few things to make my reviews better -- and lot's of the ideas are directly from viewers - I'm super grateful for the input and collaborative results! :) I'm a big fan of Goulet Pens so I was some excited when they sent me ink!!! :) I think now that I know how nicely this grey ink performs I'll have to put it on my wishlist for a bottle!! :)

      Chris Saenz well I think you do an awesome job on them. And I am so glad that they provided you with some inks to share with us. They’ll get orders based on your videos so it was a smart move on their part. Thanks for taking the time to do these videos for us all.

    Oh my! This gray is gorgeous. It seems to be a true gray - no real undertones of blue or pink. It’s on my list of gotta have sometime in the near future! Looking forward to the brown next!! Thank you@!

      Hi Stampinsan - this one surprised me a lot! I don't know why because I always enjoy the inks from Herbin - but I didn't expect the color to fall perfectly and the flow to be where I like it ALL the pens. I now have it in my TWSBI Mini with Medium nib and so far it's impressive in that pen too.

    I love that it’s just looks gray. I love the purple nature of Earl Grey, but this one just looks gray. I kept forgetting to buy the sample set of these so I just did! 😂

    Thank you Chris . I like earl gray by diamine, Llanberis Slate (I've actually been down the mine at Llanberis ) & also Mont Blanc Oyster grey , these all have a very slight purple side which is correct for the colour slate is not true grey it has a purple tone so does earl grey tea , not sure about Oysters I've had them once tasted like snot anyway i'm getting off topic . The Jacques Herbin Grey is much more of a true grey . I like it! , now i have to dig out my bottle of standard grey J.Herbin who name i have forgotten which i recall is fairly light . This looks good a bit expensive but not so bad.
    It nice that Goulet are supporting you to some extent , your ink reviews are so in depth and your so close to 2k subscribers. :-)

      Hi Matthew - I can't wait to try the Llanberis Slate from the celtic set - Annie sent me those samples! This Gris de Houle is writing so beautifully in my daily bullet journal lists - in my TWSBI Mini. I noticed the subscribers are very close to 2,000 -- I hope my eye completely clears up so I can soon do a face to face video I've been wanting to do!!!

    Seconding the comment of kudos to Goulet for recognizing excellence! Great review and if I didn't already have Diamine Grey, this one would definitely go on my wish list (joining Earl Grey). So I was happy to see how close this was to Diamine Grey. Have a wonderful weekend! I'm glad your eye feels better.

      Thank you Donna! I'm so grateful my eyelid is shaping up ... what a pain that was ... I couldn't even read and that drove me up a wall!!! :) Oh that is good that you have the Diamine Grey - it appears to be very close in color to this one! And I would call this a medium grey. Happy weekend!!! :)

    Thank you for the great review! I really like this grey! I'm still looking for the best one for me. I find Lexington too light and Diamine earl grey too dark! I use mostly a fine with the grey colour. Still looking for a good medium grey! Was going to try the Iroshizuku greys but I may have to try this one first! As for consistency with pens....why don't you just use the Lamy Vista....and use 3 different nibs....they are so easy to interchange on the Lamy and you don't have to fill up 3 pens!

    • @ChrisSaenz13
      @ChrisSaenz13  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Anita -- something to think about for sure ... it would save me time but I'm not sure .. my most used nibs are JoWo and the Goulet branded JoWo ... at this point. I hardly ever use a fine nib but when I do it's always a Lamy. But, I will give this some thought. Thank you. Good luck in deciding on a medium grey - I really love this one!

    3 people now have complained about something going on with their eyes including myself. There might be something in the air that's making dust swirl. Just make sure you wash it good and pat it dry. Try not to rub it and if you have eye drops use them. If it lasts more than a week go see a opthamologist they have machines that can look to see if anything is wrong :) ... as for the ink i feel if im going to use a grey im going with pencil its shimmery when applied at an angle and it is the cheapest option possible for grey lol

      My eyelid is a lot better today. I do wonder if my dysfunction is allergies. We're having some nutty weather AND a lot of weird stuff in the air. Thank you for the advice. I was almost ready to go to the eye doctor when it finally improved after 4 days! I too love pencils and I'm currently using a pencil a lot in my bullet journal. It looks great. I still want a bottle of grey ink though. :)

    Again a very poetic ink name. If you translate it into english (Swell gray) it describes the gray of the sea after a storm where there still are some waves going on but without having the destructive force. For me this ink is a bit light, I prefer the Diamine Earl Grey or the Callifolio Gris de Payne.

    • @ChrisSaenz13
      @ChrisSaenz13  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the translation! Diamine Earl Grey will likely still remain as one of my favorite inks too - it's got amazing complexity and I like how it looks in a nib too. :) I've yet to try Callifolio Gris de Payne.

    Love the look of this ink - you know I love a grey. In the broader nibs it is of course darker, but I like it in the stub nib perhaps best.It is not too dark, ( I like pale grey ) and has great shading. I love your little rhodia custom notebooks :).
    I have just been and done and ordered some grey inks! u is a baaad influence! but I can look forward to a parcel now ! :)

      Ahhh I was writing a reply and it disappeared. I was saying "tell me about it .. I influence myself badly when it comes to ink too" lol. I'm glad I held off on the bottle of Lexington Grey - this ink will suit me better and even if I have to spend an entire monthly pen allowance on it ... I can see it in my future! :) At some point! Not this month! [that ship sailed]...

    Aloha Chris! Sorry for not commenting in quite a while! Rest assured that I am still watching all your videos. Congratulations on posting every day last month. I wished I could of joined you and the others, but I didn't have enough inks to use a different one every day for a month, but it did give me inspiration to use up the few samples I do have and use them in various pens with different size nibs. As to your question regarding gray/grey inks, I did add a few to my very meager ink collection, but still have not found one I like best! I am still trying to find one that looks like pencil, so very little to no shading and dark enough to be saturated, but not like a black! I'm not sure if I will ever find a combo that I like! I'd like to see how your pens perform with Lexington Gray. Have a nice weekend. Mahalo, Thomas

    • @ChrisSaenz13
      @ChrisSaenz13  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Thomas - I do plan to review Lexington Gray at some point! I like it and it's permanent - it's not too dark in the nibs but I haven't got a handle yet on the flow and performance of that one. Glad to "see" you here!!!

    • @kauaiphotography
      @kauaiphotography 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChrisSaenz13 , thanks as always for the personal reply. It looks like you have quite a few other inks to review, so no rush. I probably won't be getting any other grey inks anytime soon, just curious how your test pens perform with Lexington Grey. BTW, congratulations on winning the contest. My next purchase is a Tomoe River notebook, but as you know they are hard to find in 68gsm and of course quite pricey. Have a wonderful rest of your weekend.

    A nice grey 👍☺️, though I do like Diamine Earl Grey. I have a sample of Llanberis Slate (pronounced 'thlan-ber-ris' ) but have yet to try it. I've got a sample of the Herbin Orange Soleil as I wanted to try some orange inks - purchased from Scotland and they sell all the colours ☺️
