Using A Phone As A Cycle Computer? You Need One Of These!

  • Hello, welcome back! I get asked a lot of questions about cycle computers. One of the most common is...can’t you just use a phone? In today’s vlog I chat about when they are good/bad. If you want to use your phone as a cycling computer you would probably prefer it to be mounted to the bike...so something you’ll need is the Quad Lock phone case and bike mount, genuinely an awesome bit of kit!

Phone over a cycling computer all day ever day mate!
Strava with a Bluetooth heart rate monitor lets you do any training you want. I commute 3 hours a day by bike and don't have any probs with the battery, if you're having battery issues you probably need a new phone! Awesome vid mate!

Completely agree. My iPhone 12 is a couple of years old and still lasts 4 hours on a ride from fully charged. I never usually do rides that long without stopping somewhere in which case I can bring a small external battery to charge it.

The one piece of advice I have about using a Quad Lock on your bar or stem is if you’re attaching your phone whilst riding, it is worth giving the phone a pull after you’ve clipped it in to make sure it’s secure. I have managed to clip my phone in at the top whilst the bottom of the phone was not locked in place - my fault entirely but a valuable lesson learned!

Exactly this and you won’t regret. Got handlebar mount on road bike and stem on gravel/winter bike, attach to whichever and can read on the go. Had Strava issues up here in the Lakes when phone was in my pocket, not since.

I've got a Quadlock set up, with the sticky adaptor on my phone rather than a dedicated case. Very secure.
BTW: No case means no poncho. I been using kitchen cling film too keep the rain off. Also works good.

Like a lot of other avid cyclists here, I have also been using quad locks on my bikes for years now. Very useful and handy. Nevertheless, the GPS on the phone uses up energy quite fast and your phone battery will die in no time, especially if you ride using the step by step feature on Ride with GPS for example. That being said, owning both a phone and a bike computer is the way to go if your budget permits it. Thanks Dave!

The amount of time I spend on my phone, using my phone to track rides as well my battery would be none existent... thats the main reason I use a bike computer and you don't have to worry about them when the weather is terrible but do like the quad mount for Zwift looks like a great bit of kit may invest....

Totally agree, once you use a bike computer you understand why people buy them. Can go off on a 5hr ride , and bike computer will still have lots of battery left showing your routeand connected to your sensors. Try that with a phone and it will just drain or overheat in summer (tried with a phone with 4000mha battery even that didn’t last on a 2hr ride)

Quad lock does its job holding the mobile phone securely. So far it has been good for me. It is convenient as I'm able to see any incoming text or phone calls or notifications whilst riding.

I've used QuadLock since they first came out and swear by their grip. Have hammered down rutty bridleways on my MTB and it just doesn't budge. I used to use a phone to track, but battery life of a proper bike computer can't really be matched, and now the phone mount is mainly to keep the phone close at hand and out of my pockets.

i use a phone mount from amazon, all metal for less than a tenner and its been the best purchase, its lasted mountain biking, its lasted bumpy gravel, and the phone doesnt move. i tried a friends quadlock this winter and honestly, prefer the one i have for much cheaper mainly as i prefer that i slide my phone in rather than put it in a case, but had no issues with the quadlock itself. i cant afford a cycle computer so its great to have mounts, and even on those long rides i just make sure to turn the screen off for most of the time, and leave nav directions on, and works perfectly well. phone mounts are incredible!

For me it depends on what I'm doing. 95% of the time it's just phone in pocket with strava on. If I'm really training, my go to is my shanren Di Pro, I really just need it for the speed, recording gps and hear rate.

For navigation only, so far my phone still beats any cycle computer. Simply because the screen is so much bigger and sharper. Used to have a Garmin but now I use a Sigma Rox 12.0 for my training. But for navigation a certain route I much prefer apps like Naviki on my smartphone. I use a small bag on my top tube specially designed for holding a smartphone. Enough space in the bag to add a power bank so I have extra power to last forever.

I have been doing a lot of long rides in 2020, I use quad lock with my iPhone. Battery issues are not an issue if you get a top tube bag and put a power bank in it.
However I did a 116mile long ride from Reading to Somerset, purchased a Garmin and kept my phone as a backup, the Garmin worked a treat, however on subsequent rides the Garmin froze on me, so switched back to my iPhone for navigation.
I returned the Garmin under warranty and now thinking of getting a Wahoo as I did like having a dedicated device.
As you say the quad lock is perfect, I also use mine for Zwift as the companion app.
Great channel, been following you for a few months now 👍

Loving the look of the out-front version of the Quad Lock. Much nicer. I always felt the original Stem mount sat too high. Although I don't use my phone to track rides, its super-handy for extra navigation/ride cues/training instructions or just easier access to phone instead of fumbling in back pockets only to drop the darn thing!

  • @krissche1863

I use a quad lock mount for my phone (right now using a phone that doesn't have a quad lock cover but I bought another rugged one and quadlock has a universal adhesive mount you can put on the back of any case or straight on the device if you want to do that) just like the one you used in this video, but then I have. Garmin Fenix 5X plus that I have a stem mount for and I use the Garmin varia vision with that. So I ride with 3 screens. The watch is my actual bike computer, but since that is small I can use the varia vision as the actual display for the data, but at the same time have my phone up for map navigation etc. The watch also let's me get around the problem with glare on my phone since I can answer texts, phone calls and control my music on the phone from the watch. It is a really great combo. Of course I get my power numbers on my watch/varia vision as well. And the varia radar... I got the ultimate setup!

  • @seanicky

Used my phone for a year, in my pocket first, then on a silicon mount.
No problem with battery life (close everything, close WiFi etc). But, I just bought a Bryton! It's great, smaller, neater, and less of a worry. It takes time to find out everything that the Bryton can do (everything) but it just gets better and better!
In retrospect a good out front mount would have done it, like a quad lock, but phones are just too large and expensive out front, so given the choice, I would have both!
    Cheers Dave!

I just use Strava on my phone and stick it in my pocket. I do have an old Garmin Edge a mate gave me but don't use it that much. Looks a decent bit of kit, you can link sensors to Strava don't know how many or the Wahoo app if using their sensors so you could get ride data using your phone. Battery wise if your using a handlebar bag could stick a power bank in it and plug it in.

  • @solitaryrefinement6787

Strava on your phone + a $20 Anker power bank and you're set.
I ditched a computer when I realized that I still needed everything else (phone anyway, heart rate monitor, sensors, etc...). Now, all I use is a thin wrist worn heart rate monitor paired to the phone and I have a small power bank for anything more than a 3 hour ride that triples my time (3 full phone recharges).

Hey Dave! I was just having this chat with my mate the other day! I just found quad lock a few weeks ago! It is incredible after a few phone mounts have broke half way through rides! But with quad lock it’s amazing! I then just STRAVA my rides but on my trainer or rollers I use the app Cyclemeter with my speed and cadence sensors connected to it. Does the job for me . I have started to carry a small power bank with me on longer rides just incase battery dies with listening to music and doing STRAVA can happen. Another great video. 🤙🏼

As someone who just got a bryton 320.... I’d rather use that. And it works with Strava too. I have a phone mount but I don’t want it on all the time... only for long distance rides on bike paths. Bike computers are good to see how your doing, it’s like feedback. Strava’s feedback is kinda panse when thinking about it. And plus I’d rather pay $200 for a new 320 than $700 for a new iPhone SE.

Fair Play Dave 👍 Informative vlog today 👍
I’ve used Garmin for years just got fed up of them fuc king up losing battery life / telling you to turn around etc
Then now use wahoo good to be fair. Love ❤️ all data out in front so to use phone which I tried at first in top tube bag with phone compartment on the top Like you found kept going off on sleep mode and would totally drain battery and in the rain your phone would probably ring someone at work when your supposed to be Ill 😷 not riding 😂 😂 😂
Phones are expensive but so are bike computers maybe not so much now well no £250/£300 still a lot of money
So for the price then maybe us as cyclists should expect more reliably and for them to work correctly
But when you talk to other cyclists we expect them to play up and not work sometimes WHY do we / I do this
For new cyclists it’s so frustrating when you spend that much and it not work. Rant over 😅🥲🥲
Happy cycling Dave / All 😎

I use a Garmin smart watch, better for mountain biking. If you do mount your phone your bike/moto bars it might we worth investing in their vibration dampener. Phone cameras hate vibration and I destroyed my camera on a a few phones that that way. Prob a bigger deal on a moto.

I'm a casual bike rider using it to commute but also for some training. Nothing crazy, just some rides in high intensity, I don't have a power meter, just a heart rate monitor.
I'm using my phone to record my data and it works perfectly fine, I have a suspicion that my GPS on my phone is a bit off but I don't care that much as long as it's 95% correct. I've considered buying Quadlock or SP Connect but neither makes cases for my phone. I have to buy another case and use their generic holder which I'm a bit hesitant about the glue durability.
Another reason I don't have a bike mount is that my cellphone's battery with GPS and Bluetooth enabled will die pretty quickly, and how am I going to take Instagram photos :D :D Also, when it's raining even slightly it's not a option.
I'm putting my phone in my pocket and it works OK. Disadvantages is that obviously I don't have live feed of my speed, heart rate etc. A big bummer though is the lack of navigation. During summer when I go out in the wild I stop every few meters checking the map - yes my orientation abilities are not existent :)
All in all, yes it definitely works having your cellphone as a bike computer, even in your pocket. I'm saving some money though to buy a dedicated unit...

Big fan of quadlock mounts. Have one on each of my bikes.
My bikepacking bike has a SON 28 dynamo and this is connected to a sinewave cycles USB charger, which then keeps my phone charged throughout my long rides. 🙂🙂
Best thing about using a phone, is I use OS mapping via viewranger which allows me to change my route on the fly, either on roads, tracks and bridleways. 👍😊

People don't know how lucky there are these days... When I were a lad there were no such things as computers. The first bit of 'technology' I had was a speedometer that was a dial and had a cable connected to a wheel that rubbed around my front wheel dynamo style.
These days, Garmin all the time, I can only just about cope with riding to the end of the road and back to test setups without putting my Garmin on. Never used my phone, never will, I worry about it stuck out in front just feel it's going to get smashed but I don't even think about a cycling computer, I guess because that's what its for.

For tracking my rides I use my Garmin watch, it connects to an external HRM chest strap, speed and cadence sensors. It works for me at the moment, however I would like to add a dedicated computer just to have the screen a useful size and will stick with Garmin so that I do not have to replace all my sensors.
I don’t see any reason why you can’t Zwift while outside, you will just need some sensors that will communicate with your phone most likely via Bluetooth as iPhone doesn’t work with Ant+ (but I am trying to remember where I put my usb input to lightning cable and will then try my Ant+ dongle in that with my phone)

Pain to take off the wheel when you get a flat compared to a quick release.my gravel has thru axles with disc brakes but my tandem has quick release with disc brakes? Sorry for the long winded question mate. Just trying to understand the benefit of thrust axle compared to quick release.you and Juliet should do some vlogs together. Or is that taboo in the vlog world?

Yes you can use zwift outside. I just connected it to my power meter, started zwift and shoved it in my back pocket. It does kill your battery life though!

I tried using this setup. It just doesn't work that well in bright sunny days. Could hardly see the screen of my phone. Also since most phones these days are OLED, the numbers on the screen started burning in. Not surprisingly since the phone has to be max brightness. Battery life of the phone also diminished rather quickly. It kind of made my sensors(power, cadence, speed and hr) kind of useless since I could hardly see them on screen, which made them only uselful post ride. Now I got a simple garmin edge 130 plus, now I could see my data number crystal clear in bright sunny days. It's like e-ink of an ebook.

Hmmm. Not for me. I used to use Strava on my phone before I bought a cycle computer. My battery always died so you lose your ride data & can't contact anyone if you're in trouble. I find a phone screen too small for Zwift, currently using an iPad with a Tacx tablet handlebar mount. I guess the quad lock mount is an ok option for those that don't have tablets or laptops for running Zwift though.

    • @Se0what
      @Se0what 3 ปีที่แล้ว

ahh depends on what you're into really. the main difference is you get cadence with the cateye vs you get to share your ride online if your into that kind of thing. If not, then you kinda have your answer.

I use a Garmin Edge 820 I don’t really know if I need it but I like to track at least my mileage I don’t give a shit about speed or cadence I just log the miles. It’s totally overkill for what I’m using it for but admittedly it looks really cool on the front of my Cervelo S5 with a Barfly Garmin holder

I used my phone with a Garmin mount adapter on my handlebars for a 30 mile off-road ride and the phone was literally rattled into electronic dementia, had to throw it away, don't do what I did....
I use the cycle streets app for back up navigation to the Garmin, it's free and you can download the UK map for free so if you lose signal it still works

  • @pedroclaro7822

For everyone except avid cyclists who ride almost everyday, a phone is THE way to go. Convenient, easy, and pretty cheap. Use a cheap cycle computer for stats and your phone for navigation.
Vibrations can eventually damage your phone’s camera. Beware. I won’t use my good phone for off-road riding, only a beater. Plus Quadlock, although secure, isn’t a very comfortable case to use (big bulge), so you’re better off using it on your old phone imho.
If you’re a bicycle tourer like me, a proper vibration dampening case is essential, and a bit worse than a used garmin.

main difference is battery life, phone you cant have like 2-3hrs screen time bevore its empty with bikecomputer can go for 24hrs and 16hrs with navi on
I used my garmin 1030+ in powersaved mode with navi on and got from 60% to 10% in 5 days with around 10hrs riding a day on my bikepacking vacation in Iceland last summer my phone was after 2 days empty should have put it in power save... (had a dynamo fail so wasn't able to charge my stuff)
I had a look ad the quad lock bevore to use it to ride and drone to stick my drone controle on my handel bar :)

Dave defo computer, phone is just too big on your bars. OK in your pocket. If you think about it your phone has your whole life on them now. Bike computers are better they have all the data you need on them. Hands up for going out in this weather bugger that turbo training at the mo 👏👏👏👏👍

I’ve used a Cateye Velo 7 wired computer since 2012 with no issues, it’s even on the original battery! Recently the wire lost connection, so I replaced it with the MTB wire which is much thicker and sturdier. When I finish my ride I take pictures of each screen (TM, DST, AV, MX, ODO) with my iPhone and use PhotoGrid to make a collage picture of the screens, plus I can add titles of where and when it was. As someone else has already posted: “I ride, I don’t train” - yup me too, my iPhone gives access to maps, therefore the Wahoo etc would be overkill for me. I may try Strava one day, but if it’s a big battery drain I’m not interested.
Oh and if you’re cold on the bike try a Buffalo Cycle Shirt www.buffalosystems.co.uk/products/cycle-shirt/
