  • If you thought you need a cycle computer for accurate cadence and heart rate data, think again! With the right sensors and the correct app on your smartphone, you can enjoy accurate data, both on your ride, and for post-ride analysis. A cadence sensor will cost ₹2000 / $16, and a heart rate monitor will cost ₹3000 / $20 - less than half the cost of the same setup with the cheapest cycle computers. If you have a fitness watch, you may be able to pair that with the app too, you won't need a heart rate monitor. If you buy a cycle computer later, use these same sensors with your computer - you won't have to buy new ones then.

      Man this was such a good question after this is the second time of me rewatching the video.
      I bought the product and was wondering if I really need it. I use my e-mtb so I do a lot of different things and I think having some sensors can really be beneficial. Most of the time when I ride with my son on the same bike I just do what I think is fun for him without really pushing. When I ride alone I’m trying to figure out a good cadence to get the most out of the motor in different situations. I have a speed sensor built in but no cadence.

    This video couldn't have come at a better time for me! After contemplating for months, I was planning to get a Garmin Edge 520. And for the express purpose of getting all the sensor data, I wasn't aware the sensors themselves work with phones directly! Changed my plans to start with sensors + phone for now.

    Wow this a great video for folks starting in cycling. Data makes so much of difference. I have been passing similar points to all young riders in our group that are just focused on doing higher speeds. I was told by an experienced cyclist that 1) spend more time on the saddle, do continuous rides rather than rides with breaks. 2) Cadence is key. Higher cadence makes a big difference. 3) HRM helps identifying zones; and Z2/Z3 - Base and Tempo is key to being a better and fitter cyclist.

    In my experience, using a smartphone in this manner (along with turn-by-turn navigation in RidewithGPS) eats through battery power quickly. Granted, a smartphone has a larger screen which makes reading on-screen maps easier however, the bike computers are designed specifically for use on, well, a bike - in other words, longer battery life. Garmin Edge 500-series aren't all that more expensive than basic bike computers and you get more features. I have a Garmin Edge 830 paired with Garmin cadence sensors (one of each of my bikes so I don't have to keep moving it around) and a Polar H10 HRM. Set-up works well and bonus, Garmin Connect is a pretty solid mapping platform and for analyzing data after a ride.

    • @TheIndianCyclist
      @TheIndianCyclist  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Karl, I agree - in almost every way, a decent bike computer is superior. In fact, even some of the cheapest GPS-enabled computers, like the Magene C406 are pretty good. The only place I think a phone scores is when navigating by sat map in the wilderness with no predefined route (been there, done that).
      However, this is a $ based decision - a Gramin 520 costs ₹18000 in India, perhaps $250 in the US and that's not including sensors. In many cases it would be more expensive, or pretty close, to the cost of the bikes people ride :) And at ₹7000, even the C406 can be expensive for some. I agree if you leave the phone screen on all the time, it will drain quickly - no way it will compare to any bike computer. But if you have a full charge, it should last for several hours, more if you don't use navigation, or are happy to keep the screen off if you don't need to see live data. I once managed a 200 km, 13 hour ride on a single charge, though phone was only recording GPS data, without being connected to sensors with its display off. I was remiss in not including a "cons" section in the video though, and appreciate your detailed comment, thank you!

    • @karlr6810
      @karlr6810 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheIndianCyclist Understood. Another couple of points to consider - phones are not designed for all the rattling and vibrations incurred during a ride. GPS tracking on a phone versus dedicated bike computer are significant diverse. Phone are more delicate - in other words, less likely to survive a crash and they're not inexpensive to replace. Finally, and I know this from hard experience gained last summer while paddle boarding in the hot Colorado sun - phones are not designed to be in the hot sun all day. My iPhone overheated and shutdown - that isn't good when riding in the middle of nowhere.
      Anyway, I totally get how budget plays into the decision-making of some folks. Cycling is not an inexpensive hobby anymore.

      I tested Apple Watch Workout app with mirroring to the iPhone 13 with 90 % battery health left and my Wahoo Bolt v1. After a two hour ride in 5 Celsius windy and sunny the battery had lost approximately 20% on all devices. I calculated that iPhone and Apple Watch Ultra 1 and Wahoo Bolt v1 would probably give me approximately 10 hours of battery life. The Bolt maybe 11. So not much difference between the devices. I’m very ambivalent whether to buy a Bolt V2 or just go for Apple Watch and iPhone from now on. Navigation isn’t really a thing I would use and also the Summit functionality sounds nice, but I live in a place with a lot of hills so if that kicks in every time the gradient is 3% or above it will be on very often and be annoying. I would always buy iPhone and Apple Watch Ultra anyway so that’s a cost I always will have, but on the other side I find have the iPhone on the Peak Design out front mount to be very large on the handle bars. If Apple continues to develop the Apple Watch cycling app it could become better than Wahoo too, because the data analytics are very basic on wahoo system. The one killer feature on Apple Watch is the structured workouts where you can set notifications if you’re out or in zones, heart rate or power (or both). I found that to be very useful.

    My dear cyclist.
    You just earned a loyal sub ...
    Kudos. Thank you.
    I had a question though,
    Does Garmin/wahoo software give us any additional analytics if we use them with their hardware? Example, training load, tiredness or any other things? That we might miss out and are actually useful in structuring our training? Or we're good with the free version of the app?

    • @TheIndianCyclist
      @TheIndianCyclist  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you SriHari, I appreciate the support! This is a great question. With a dedicated cycle computer, you will typically get better GPS tracking and also better climb / altitude sensitivity - so a better analysis of elevation on your route. With Garmin's climb pro for instance, you can see how much of a climb you've done, how much you have left, etc. while on the climb, live. Besides stuff like this, you'd need more hardware, like a power meter for instance to get more data from a bike computer, that might give you an idea of workout intensity. I think you may be able to pair a power meter with the app too, but I'm not sure. If not, that's another benefit of a dedicated head unit over phone.

    Thanks for your awesome informative vlog! On my bike handlebar, I use iPhone w RWGPS already linked with Strava. Would Wahoo Fitness app be able to link up with Strava simultaneously? One more question here: what waterproof bag did you use for your smartphone shown on your handlebar? Again, thanks!😄

    • @TheIndianCyclist
      @TheIndianCyclist  ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you liked the video! The synch with Strava is something that will happen after you finish the ride and save it. During the ride, there's no connection to Strava by either RWGPS or the Wahoo app. So the question now is whether you can have both apps recording your ride simultaneously, and I'd say that probably would not work, and even if it does, it would be a strain on your phone battery. Any reason why you want both? RWGPS will connect to all these sensors, so it should be as good as Wahoo for training, unless you're looking for a specific feature that the Wahoo app has - but ultimately you will have to choose one over the other for live use during your ride.

    • @TheIndianCyclist
      @TheIndianCyclist  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Milind :) At this point, if I had to choose between HR and cadence, I would probably choose HR - my goal for now is to burn fat, and so I need to optimize my time in Zone 2, instead of some of the higher zones where you'd be burning calories at a much higher rate, but those would not be coming from your fat stores. Can't say I'm in the mood to do a test to see what my "real" LTHR is though - I've just gone with the 220-age formula. What computer are you pairing your HRM with, or are you using your phone?

    • @milindbodas
      @milindbodas 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am just using my phone/strava when I am out riding. Sometimes it refuses to connect, like what happened today morning. It works quite seamlessly with the trainer for indoor rides.

    • @TheIndianCyclist
      @TheIndianCyclist  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could consider using the Wahoo app to record (both outdoors and on the trainer too) - the benefit is that you get to analyze your data without having to pay for a subscription. Strava has limited analysis for free - from what I can see, you can only see your average HR for the ride, and for each lap ... and I don't even think the app has a lap function (which I personally find invaluable for training). The only downside is the absence of live segments, though again, that's also a subscriber-only feature. Remember you can link Wahoo to Strava, so your rides will continue to appear on Strava.

    the powermeter is the most important for cyclists, and it also has a cadence sensor. But if you don't have it, this is also good, because driving without data means nothing. Maybe the cadence sensor is too high when it's on the foot?! I've used wahoo sensors on a spinner bike, they're great, but they eat batteries.

(obviously 2 are working currently but i'm not sure if it could read 3) any help before i purchase? Cheers.👍

      For this video, I actually had all 3 paired via Bluetooth to my Android phone and the Wahoo app (see 5:07) - so it should work. Aren't you already pairing the watch (what watch do you use?) with the phone too - or is that something you're monitoring separately?

      @@TheIndianCyclist Hi, thanks for the quick reply, you've just earned a sub! i use an Oppo watch with Android wear on it, so it has Google fit built in via playstore, i'm currently trying to track everything via fit, and been busting my balls trying to find a nice simple speed, cadence and heart sensor app that transfers data to google fit (without paying, or having a cycle computer) i seem to remember downloading Wahoo first, then strangely trying every other app on the store to no avail (how hard is this to make?🤷‍♂)... Bizarrely i tried Wahoo last night after 2 weeks of searching, skipped the payment bit and discovered it actually does what i wanted originally🤦‍♂...But it doesn't pair my watch (as i think it's a standalone thing as in it takes incoming BT but doesn't transmit) hence the question...Phew!😅 Oh, and i re-watched the vid and realised you can after all!🤭

      Thank you for your support, I appreciate it! The Wahoo app is great - my wife uses it at home on the trainer too (while I typically use the Wahoo ELEMNT outdoors). If you are looking for an alternative for whatever reason, try Ride With GPS, that should pair with your sensors too. Re: Oppo - yeah, I had a quick read through the manual and I don't think it's a model that will work like an independent HRM, synching with your phone. A good chest-strap HRM will be great - what's more, those batteries last for ages!

      @@TheIndianCyclist Does ride with GPS sync with google fit? (although i don't go anywhere for the GPS to activate, with me being stationary and all that😆) that's all i'm interested in really as everything is simple if i stay within the Goggle eco system...In an ideal world i just want a floating window that overlays other apps, stating in a black 1" x 2" window - speed, cadence, heart and miles...And upload to Google fit. That way i could watch TH-cam, movies etc to keep me occupied.🤫

    Can I use it with bluetooth earphones in the same time?

      Yes, though I think the limit of connected BT devices could differ from one phone to another. For this ride, I had 3 sensors connected plus BT headphones.

      These are the Giro Rumble VR shoes - they are gravel shoes that go with my SPD pedals. Let me know if you have other questions :)

    Hi sir ,will the cadence lost connect or stop working few seconds sometimes ?

    • @TheIndianCyclist
      @TheIndianCyclist  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, they can stop for a few seconds at a time - but it's not very common, shouldn't be happening often. What sensor do you use?
