I‘ll put the haters into context, in the hope you’ll get through this better: 1: Modern internet culture has an extremely toxic attitude towards „things women like“. That’s the short of it. They hate you for being a girl watching something with a cutesy artstyle. 2: Made in Abyss has been accused of all sorts of things, to the point where that might be the only thing some rando knows about it. I don't think so, she experiences the curse like any other person. You don't see many Black Whistle divers with Abyss curls despite them diving deep into the Abyss fairly frequently. I think this is simply something you need to experience alot for the curls to occur.
@@muichirotokito420 I personally believe that it's kind of like complications during disease. Many people everyday suffer from flu, but only few have some side effects that can be for example lethal. It doesn't matter how many times you had a flu, first one you catch could technically be lethal to you. Some people will have flu 30 times and not die of it. Abyss Curls might be similar in that fashion, it's just a matter of chance or some minor factors that are impossible to percieve, like genetics.
2:26 not to mention, Vueko has 2 tone hair due to Juroimoh Burning her in that spot when she was a child, so the hair who grew from that scar started growing white as a result
The effects of the curse are based on deep water diving and the effects of going up quickly. People can come up as long as they do it slowly and take enough time but going up too fast can de deadly. The curse works the same way
Regarding how deep Lyza could've delved: In the video game it's mentioned that, while the Delver's Guild will occasionally send Black Whistle Delvers on missions to gain a White Whistle, all the currently active WW Delvers gained theirs by acting on their own accord, delving deeper than allowed. Lyza wouldn't be considered active anymore at that time, but it's easy to assume that the same would apply to her, especially since she learned under Ozen.
It would also fit her personality, she never seemed to be one of people too strict about rules. Heck none of white whistles we met so far was like that
It’s more accurately the bends, even though chemo curls are mentioned in the video that actually doesn’t seem to happen with radiation poisoning proper. Just chemo. The bends isn’t totally accurate either though because it happens both when you ascend and descend to quickly, not just when you ascend.
@@neodominoz2649 there are also several levels to radiation poisoning too. and as the video explained, the curls only occur after recovering from an abyss curse. but no i was talking specifically about the direct curse effects seem to run parallel to radiation poisoning, there's also the acquiring of cancer and mutations that lead to severe birth defects and many number of long therm health problems. also one more unmentioned curse effect is the birthday disease from living just on the surface rim of the abyss where kids randomly die on their birthday
Some sort of relic meltdown at the bottom of the Abyss... Horrifying! I love it! I like the idea that the Abyss is either a living being or the corpse of a living being. Tsukushi was inspired by the Xenoblade Chronicles series, and that involves people living on massive megafauna, both alive and dead.
when she said about rapid cell division makes me thinks like when you get deeper, the time dilation also stronger. so when you are ascending, you essentially speed up your body time, so you get cancer due to unregulated cellular division idk
@@alinaufal9461time dilation would not speed up or slow down your body from your own perspective, it would only seem fast or slow to someone watching from a place where time was running faster or slower than yours. the only way it might cause adverse effects in your body is if the time dilation was uneven across your body, such as your lower half being way slower or faster than your upper half.
I Loved this video!! My personal theory is that abyssal Curls are caused specifically by rising up from the 5th layer like you mentioned, and Liza sneaked there in secret before she could delve there on her own, just like Riko did, and got them by ascending to return to the surface. I always interpreted Yelme comment to Tepaste as an implication, as in, in order to get them while ascending, you still need to dive to the 5th layer first, since most delvers plan on going back up after a trip to the dephts.
Yeah, I talk about how the Curse is similar to the bends in my iceberg video! I think it could be similar to multiple things, not just one or the other. c:
Im not sure why, i always assumed netherworld locks were gained by living in the abyss for an extended period of time, since all characters who have them seem to be living in the abyss. I guess the exception to this would be Tepaste and Lyza, but Lyza spent a good portion of her life in the abyss it's assumed and Tepaste works for the abyssal shrine maiden if I recall correctly so it wouldnt be out of the realm of possibilities that shes spending a lot of time down there
This is a really neat analysis! I never realized the side effects of the abyss connecting with the curls, it really shows the amazing thought and detail put into made in abyss. Great video!

considering the way hair grows, rikos hair curls might have already developed, its just that theyre near her scalp and covered by the already existing older straight hair.
The time dilatation effect is based on a real effect in people who spend a long time away from the surface. Without a day/night cycle they lose the sense of time passage and can come back thinking much less time passed.

I really like your "scab picking" idea that you only get abyssal curls by ascending too quickly, maybe multiple times. I definitely think it needs to be in lower levels, but with Lyza one thing I find interesting is that no one gatekeeps the layers of the abyss if that makes sense. No one's there to stop you from descending, I mean Riko did it, so it's possible that Lyza did it as well, descended too deep before she was "allowed to".
Another dope MiA vid, thank you! I feel like the curling hair resembling horns has a mythic resonance to it as a sign of having been deep within the abyss and survived. Me and my partner have speculated that Lyza and others may have been down to the 5th layer and had dealings with Bondrewed (for him to go down to the 6th layer and get their whistles carved), possibly without knowing the full extent of what he was up to(Ozen referring to him as a "scoundrel" would be an understatement if she knew). Said events could have transpired after Nanachi escaped with Mitty but before the events of the series, and time dilation might account for that? Either way I love that you're making vids on these topics!

Great video and on a topic I have been thinking about a lot recently. You are probably right about all of the in-universe explanation, and I'm really impressed how you used the whistle classes and the characters' dive history to come up with a good framework for when and where it can happen. Truth be told I don't even think Tsukushi thought about it this much. I have another perspective that ties into a larger hypothesis I am working on: The Abyss as a metaphor for depression. I think Tsukushi is writing from his heart as a way to deal with his own personal experience with depression. How it ties into the Abyss Curls (trigger warning: personal hygiene.) When one is in a deep state of depression, daily bathing becomes difficult. You're generally lying around the house, in bed or on a couch, for most of the day. When your scalp skin starts to build up, it can act as a wax that clumps your hair and makes it stick out at strange angles. It was Tepaste's Abyss curls that made me think of this as when you are sleeping or lying down, it will cause that kind of depression matted hair to make those swirl patterns (from just normal movement against the pillow). The deeper you go into depression, the more severe it looks. I also think Lyza's curls being free and 'soft' is a metaphor for how she doesn't let things cling to her. Everyone wears their Abyss scars but she doesn't let it change her. She comes back stronger with the same smile. She dives into depression and comes back with the wonders you can sometimes find there, but it doesn't change her, doesn't mark her. I think that is what makes her special and is an archetype Tsukushi sees as admirable and worth striving to emulate. I know it's not right to diagnose other people, though in this case I think that we can see the evidence in his own art, beyond just the curls. There's how Nanachi deals with grief, there's how Riko reacts to so many horrors, not always as people expect. I'm not done working on this completely but you are the first creator to post Abyssal Curl content and I love your meticulous style and appreciation for the IP, so I had to post my half-baked work. Thank you again for sharing this video, I sincerely appreciate all the effort and talent it took to film, script, and edit. Wish more creators were as thoughtful.
I wonder what it would do to people with already curly hair? maybe just add a second tone or change the texture to be more uneven? The texture of my hair depends on where on my head it is and also a lot on the weather but that is different.
1:20 Can go down to level 3, goes down to level 4 We all know the time we said: ‘yeah i can carry this much, but a little more won’t hurt…’ I have to hold my elbow so my fingers could get my credit card, i could not move my arm.
Thank you!! I made him this simplistic lil guy so it could be easy to make new expressions. The way I have the file set up in CSP, I can turn arms and expressions on and off so I can make new expressions on the fly. I'm very proud of it!
Not everyone who goes through Chemo comes back with curly hair So not every black or whire whistle is going to have curls But I do think that things like recovery time and speed of ascent are also likely good factors to consider Since the main ones with the curls are people who spend long periods in the depths, rather than our family man who probably spends weeks to months on the surface with jos family between trips
Hey. I have a theory for the abyss life forms. So. Irl bacteria and viruses love using and spreading distinct genes. Viruses are groups of genes that proliferate when in certain bacteria. They cut open genome and insert themselves. The bacterial genome in turn has methods for detecting and removing viral DNA. They are competing genes, invading the homes of other genes and parasitizing them. Bacteria trade DNA and RNA all the time to share chemical defenses and increase their ability to push other bacteria and competing lite forms away. Genes also can compete directly with other genes. New, better gene for making fungicide? It works well, and gets passed around. I don't know anything about how bacteria decide to do parallel gene transfers. All I know is they do it and that genes can spread quickly throughout a population. This is some important part of the microscopic arms race. Things like us and fungus are really stable groups of genes that have integrated to fully act as one. There's not a lot of competition within our own bodies to be the best cell. Such would be cancer and kills the cancer cells anyways when they kill their host. But genes can and do compete. Things need energy and statistics play out over tiny scales because of how many bacteria can fit on the tip of a needle. There are viruses that use us to survive and they rip through us or lay low. I think that the divers are effectively being parasitized by giant viral genome that infect creatures and even maybe compete with each other. I think that the abyss is a petri dish and the further down you go the more competition there is for less energy. The world above could be very sterilizing to the stuff below. Maybe it just provides enough biomass that competition isn't as aggressive. Maybe. Did anyone ever try to deliberately infect people with curses above ground? Is it the sunlight? The uv? It seems like the basic rule of the universe is to form a group to fight other groups with. No individual is strong enough to go it alone but everybody wants as much stuff as they can get, and that's the basic necessity for guaranteeing long term survival.
Ooh I've been waiting for a new video 😊 Are you working on something regarding the living abyss? The flow being alive wasn't something unheard of but still interesting.
I have a big document of all the major MiA theories that I’ve been working on for months whenever the inspiration hits, and there’s an entire section in regards to what exactly the Abyss is, and the Abyss being a living creature is one of them!
The wait for the translation of the next bit of the manga is killing me, so time to dive into some Made in Abyss youtube content i suppose. While hoping Nanachi is okay...
@@TheTopHatNerd-sz7dp So’s mine! The Abyssal Curls are a specific phenomenon and seem to have a different texture to the rest of one’s hair. I’d imagine if you or I developed Abyssal Curls, we’d get bigger sweeps like Tepaste’s cinnamon bun or Srajo’s horns.
It’s not out of the question that a lower rank whistle could accompany white whistles to the 5th layer as you can rarely gather enough white whistles to form a proper expedition.
Bondrewd’s phrasing implied that only White Whistles could go there before he pushed for the rules to be changed, but I could see some WWs breaking the rules behind the Guild’s back.
@@darkvioletcloud I mean what are they realistically going to do? I wouldn’t be surprised if younger and lower ranked whistles were encouraged to break that rule a little. There are a bunch of people who come out to help Riko and Reg even though they should be sending them back to the surface immediately especially Ozen.
@@kekero540 Going past the First Layer as a Red Whistle is treated as a suicide. Sure, the responsible thing for Ozen to do would be to send Riko back up, but she has no obligation to do that. Riko has made up her mind, so Ozen is going to at least prepare her for what’s ahead.
Made in Abyss is a seinen anime about the Abyss, the last unexplored place on Earth! It's a MASSIVE chasm that bores deep into the ground and is separated into at least 7 distinct layers, all with their own ecosystems. Traversing the landscape is hard enough, but if you try to go back up out of the Abyss, you get hit with something called the Curse of the Abyss - depending on the layer, different physiological effects. The first layer makes you nauseous and dizzy, the third makes you hallucinate, and so on. Past a certain point, you can't return, as the strains are too much for your body to handle. Story-wise, it's about Riko, a 12 year old orphan whose mother, Lyza, had descended into the Abyss in an attempt to find the bottom. Riko is entranced by the Abyss and wants to be as prolific as her mother. One day, she comes across a robot who looks almost like a young boy but with mechanical arms and legs. Though there are relics from the Abyss, artifacts with various properties, the robot is something that hasn't been seen before. She names him Reg after it's revealed he has amnesia, and believes that he came from the bottom of the Abyss. She and Reg take off to venture to the bottom of the Abyss together in an attempt to pursue Lyza. The world is fascinating and well developed, the characters are sweet and tragic, the music is AMAZING, and overall, the plot has themes of love, loss, and letting go. I highly recommend checking out at least the first episode. It's a great introduction to the series. If you continue to watch it, the watch order is Season 1 -> Movie 3: Dawn of the Deep Soul -> Season 2: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun. It's a bit confusing, but the movie is essential watching, as it covers an arc that was a bit too short for a full season.
yeah, movie 1 and 2 are just season 1 shortened down into two parts, it is better to just watch season 1 and ignore the first two movies but movie 3 is important and happens just after season 1 and before season 2.
Tepaste and Prushka both have prominent chunks of curls. I’d imagine someone with curlier hair would actually have that part soften out and shape into a larger sweep. Perhaps their hair would also develop a second color? By the way, my delver dude just has my real life hair texture, if you were wondering. He doesn’t have Abyssal curls (yet!)
Not sure at all if lyza actually followed the "law" concerning delving limits. I mean she's called annihilator so she must be the one to not care abt rules

When one is in a deep state of depression, daily bathing becomes difficult.
Wow, this is a really interesting interpretation of this whole story! Well done, seriously!
great work, keep up the good work ! I appreciated the edits moreover the interpretation you gave for the abyssal curls.
I wonder what it would do to people with already curly hair? maybe just add a second tone or change the texture to be more uneven? The texture of my hair depends on where on my head it is and also a lot on the weather but that is different.
Maybe it'd cause big sweeping curls like Tepaste's hair? I think it'd be a change in texture in at least part of the hair.

Can go down to level 3, goes down to level 4
We all know the time we said: ‘yeah i can carry this much, but a little more won’t hurt…’
I have to hold my elbow so my fingers could get my credit card, i could not move my arm.
Awesome video showcasing this!
So glad to see another MiA video from you! Also your abyss-sona (?) is really cute
Thank you!! I made him this simplistic lil guy so it could be easy to make new expressions. The way I have the file set up in CSP, I can turn arms and expressions on and off so I can make new expressions on the fly. I'm very proud of it!
This was awesome! Great work :)
Hi mickell xD
@@rebecca_rh HeyHey! ❤
Not everyone who goes through Chemo comes back with curly hair
So not every black or whire whistle is going to have curls
But I do think that things like recovery time and speed of ascent are also likely good factors to consider
Since the main ones with the curls are people who spend long periods in the depths, rather than our family man who probably spends weeks to months on the surface with jos family between trips
These made in abyss videos are amazing :)
Thank you! I have so much fun making them!
2:39 "Pushing them aside" 😭
Just like Nanachi did in the latest chapter!
@@darkvioletcloudnOooo
@@darkvioletcloud absolutely despicable
When riko was getting affected by the curse, the tips of her hair were curled while she was delirious.
I’ve been looking forward to your next abyss video!!
Mfs dive into the deepest layer of the abyss for a cool haircut
Maybe abyss tries to heal everyone who accends to help whem on a journey back, but does so very violently and uneven :/
Ooh I've been waiting for a new video 😊
Are you working on something regarding the living abyss? The flow being alive wasn't something unheard of but still interesting.
I have a big document of all the major MiA theories that I’ve been working on for months whenever the inspiration hits, and there’s an entire section in regards to what exactly the Abyss is, and the Abyss being a living creature is one of them!
OMG hank green mention!!!
The wait for the translation of the next bit of the manga is killing me, so time to dive into some Made in Abyss youtube content i suppose. While hoping Nanachi is okay...
that curls hair look cute.
its happy to see that you didn't give up because of those foolish comments
YAY ANOTHER MIA VIDEO :D
Maybe you can count vuekos longer hair as abyssal loops than curls lol
Ah littlè Uzumaki in the mix, any fan can see the reference.
abyss hole you gave me canca? i can't believe you would do such a thing, who just shoots someone with a cancer gun.
How old are you bro?
My hair is completly curly, but i’ve never been into the abyss
@@TheTopHatNerd-sz7dp So’s mine! The Abyssal Curls are a specific phenomenon and seem to have a different texture to the rest of one’s hair. I’d imagine if you or I developed Abyssal Curls, we’d get bigger sweeps like Tepaste’s cinnamon bun or Srajo’s horns.
@@darkvioletcloud well now that you’ve mentioned it, when i look into the mirror some of my curls do look like curled up horns
That's literally radiation poisoning 😮
Chemotherapy can give you curly hair, called chemo curls. I dont know if it could be reffering to this?
Just came across this video. I have little to no idea what this anime is-- Would someone mind sharing?
What if a BLACK or some other curve/curl person went down there? Just for fun to imagine.
Reg has no curls, and he's an auben...
Reg isn't impacted by the Curse.
@@darkvioletcloud inverse reg would beg to differ. But yes, the curse doesn't impact his appearance because he's a robot.

Not sure at all if lyza actually followed the "law" concerning delving limits. I mean she's called annihilator so she must be the one to not care abt rules
