Thank you so much for sharing your experience with this amazing game and series.
Currently trying to beat Plesioth to get to High Rank 5 (ugh), but I totally agree about the environments and level design. Beautiful aesthetic. And so many levels! I keep finding new maps.
GU is my jam. The relentless yet demanding hyper-aggression of the Aerial Style Insect Glaive is something that no other game lets you experience. It is addicting to me The best thing about it being that it really demands you to be skilled to use it to its full potential, because if you mistime a vault you're dead.
Recently got MHGU on Switch on sale for $15 and this has been an interesting title no doubt. Really like the Hunting Arts and such. Also I might be biased because I liked Rise (and the Silkbind abilities) and I can see where Rise got some of its inspiration from
I bought MHGU and was put off by how odd it felt. I REALLY want to get into it though looking at the roster and the styles and stuff. Does anyone have suggestions on what weapons/styles I should try to get into this game? I mained Charge Blade/Insect Glaive in MHW & Dual Blades in MHR.
Keep using charge blade it’s OP In gen 4 and use guild style at first because it doesn’t change the move set and it will allow you to use two hunter arts. You might have to get used to the movement but it shouldn’t be too difficult
Technically yes. you can fight old monsters from gen 1-4 in generations and use old locales from the original games. All while using the gen 4 movement and quality of life features. But it’s still older than “new” monster hunters like world and rise
There is one thing that I do think is a valid complaint for MHGU: The lack of subspecies. The almost lack of any subspecies. You have the metal raths and the deviants but... yeah it's extremely disapointing and while I still defend it I will still admit that's a weak point.
Thank you for this video. It's kinda sad that most people who are considered "MH fans" will never experience such masterpieces as MHGU or MHFU. People think World/Rise are pinnacle of the series but in reality they're entirely different series than old MH games. The only things which connects them is the universe and characters/monsters. World/Rise feels more like a spinoffs rather than mainline with all QoL changes and streamlined gameplay. I personally hated cutting elements which were "soul" of the series like flexing, being able to kick, doing prep before hunts, marking the monster on the map, sitting in the online hub with friends at the table and doing stupid gestures, arm wrestling etc. Funny little things which made this series really loved. For some reason Capcom decided to cut them off. I never understanded their decision but you can't deny that they sold more. Good for them I guess. Fortunately we can still play MHFU and GU online.
The thing is yea they sold more. But if they’d released these monster hunters on pc and other consoles, I’m sure a lot of the newer players would eat them up. I know I would
Thank you for enjoying the video and yes I agree it’s bitter sweet for me too. I feel in love with the series the moment I touched it in mg3U and those classic monster hunters just have a uniqueness that isn’t captured in the new generation of games unfortunately
I mean, this game have the Pokke theme. (REMIXED TO GOD TIER btw) Instant 20/20, sorry Elden Ring, you can't compete even with your AaaahaHHaaaaaHHHa Edit serious : the first map + the first monster is really the best introduction to the serie. It's so well done.
I might be an outlier but I started on rise n I still play rise when I want none grindy fast fights but gu is so deep n has so much farming n u can always play as palico to make combat feel faster paced
MHGU is like the street fighter alpha 3 of the series...most times we already got the best entry in a given series...i make the comparison to sfa3 because these games are true old guard peak 90s capcom...the flare, the arcade dopamine inducing visuals and sound...even the running animation is like arthur from ghouls and ghost...full force capcom etc. Oldskool MH games are proper hardcore games made for proper gamers...i would push back on the word clunky often used...its mechanical, weighty and deliberate!
Mhgu is easily the best mh game in every way. If only capcom would port it and other games to steam, but I guess they are too busy making shoes for the 20th anniversary 🙄 Mhgu is main series btw
I agree it’s just the best game and it’s not really close when it comes to the depth of this game and the content. Plus I’m a sucker for the old hunting aesthetic. And oh that’s great then I thought it was a “spin off title”
@@DracosPerspective for some reason, internally both mh teams call every expansion a spinoff (including iceborne) even though that's not how the definition for a spinoff works lol But regardless, mhxx (mhgu) shows up in the mainline anniversary video from years ago, which definitively shows its mainline. The mh teams are just weird with how they refer to things for some reason sometimes.
Imo generations ult, 4 ult, and rise go hard as hell world goes on a new level but can break formula habit that the others have so I can't wait for wilds cause the beta had the best of both worlds so far
My first ever MH game was 4U, i loved it same with GU, i recently bought Rise and dont get me wrong its an ok game but it feels like its missing the love and care the older ones had
In defense of loading zones, they actually make the map feel bigger without needing to make it bigger, I like world, but those maps... are a burden to traverse some times, clasic MH games make the maps feel huge with the power of imagination without the meed to make them annoying
Honestly, to me 4U is unbeatable, and is the main reason i will NEVER sell my 3ds. But i loved XX (i played it patched, and when the servers was open, i even used a crossplay patch to play with GU friends), and i understand why it can be considered better. But yet, at least about the main line series, i still think 4U is the best game to introduce someone to the series, because it may be more basic than GU in gameplay, but teaches the core of classic MH's, it force you to learn how to survive whitout parrys, adept style or valor evade, but with actually learning the monsters movesets and tendences to know when you must run and roll out of the attack zones, unless you learn to domain the lance tactics, or get evasion +3. And over all, the main reason is that if some one start with 4U, he will be more able to apreciate all the older games, even with their "clunkyness", as much as the next games and their upgrades, making lovers of the WHOLE monster hunter series. And of course, to apreciate even more the masterpiece that is MHXX/GU
That was a great point, I agree someone should start with mh4u to understand the how game works fundamentally without all the extra stuff 100%. Mh4u is goated too
MHGU is goated but my biggest problems are the deviant system and the lack of good maps. Also where tf is Qurupeco? Imagine how many different monsters he could've called in.
Nostalgia plays a big role my guy. This a 17 min video, but you glaze this game for 11 of it ez. Now with that said, I got it on switch now. Sale was like $10 bro.
As a 5th fleeter who started with rise but is now a veteran in world, the restock at camps arguments actually just piss me off so bad because everyone makes it sound like the game actually forces you to restock at camps even if you don't want to. You can just as easily get the "of fuck, I have to fight this monster without heals" in older games by simply just not restocking your items! It's not like when you faint the game forces you in the camp and auto restocks your items. Just simply look at the camp and go "nah, I'm not gonna restock" and walk away. Not to mention, in end game when you are actually good at the game you very rarely if ever run out of healing items, same as in GU. The only people that will actually restock their items are people learning a fight or are new to the game and are scared of loosing. And even then, it's not like they restock more than like 2 times. This argument is actually pointless, it's like getting upset that the game gives u the ez items in the chest at the start of quests. Don't like it? Don't interact with it. Like you said that you don't want to be fighting an elder and don't want to just restock after you run out of healing items and faint. Like, okay? Just don't restock then. All that being said, this is a great video and I agree that GU is an absolutely amazing game. It's just the argument that being able to restock makes the newer games easy is so pointless.
That’s a fair point but another angle is now I have to handicap myself. If I did faint and I have 5 mega potions why wouldn’t I restock ? Why wouldn’t I take advantage of in game mechanics. Now I have to handicap myself.
@@DracosPerspective I made a reply but I'm not seeing it so I'm just gonna summarize what I said. (If it is there lmk and I'll delete this one.) The part of the argument that is dumb is that everyone that I have heard complain about it like the game forces you to restock when you get low on healing items and completely ignores the fact that you can just choose not to restock. While you just made a valid point, the people that play older games are used to going in without healing items if the fight goes on for too long. It's up to the individual if they want to restock or not. Restocking has in a way made the game easier, but it has also in a way made the game harder. As if you restock after every faint and still fail the hunt, you end up loosing many more items from 1 hunt than you would in the older games. Restocking has also opened MH to more people in the fact that not everyone has time to sit down for a multiple hour play session, some people may only have 1 hours or less before they need to do IRL thing, restocking has made it so the people that have that more strict time limits could end up doing a hunt they would normally fail before they need to hop off. It has also opened the game up to more casual players who would prefer to be punished less harshly for trying to learn the game allowing them to play the game more, get more into it, and eventually want to try out older games for a challenge or to simply just experience them (I am one of said players). MH is a game about learning the monster as well as learning your weapon(s) until you get to the point where you hardly heal if at all, which makes the argument completely pointless in end game. All that being said, if the offer to play GU still stands lmk and I'd be more than happy to play. I would much like to experience end game GU before wilds releases.
Up until the day yuzu and citra got shutdown by Nintendo online lobbies for these games we're still CROWDED. You can still play multiplayer but yuzu and citra won't list the lobbies for you, so you gotta direct connect to your friends. I'm sure whoever forked the projects though will bring working lobbies back
Woaw. I didn't know until now that you can go to camp to get resources again when out of stock in Monster Hunter Rise 😅 what I did when I'm out of pots, I'll go to the other areas to get herb and stuff and combine it again to make pots. 😆😅
I'm not saying this to... Go against anything you said. Just my person opinion I guess 🤔 I like 4U so much only cause the monster roster is so great! All the Fatalis, Molten Tigrex, raging Brachy! 😢 So many fond memories. I still need to go through GenU, and I plan to with a friend, I've got so many things I wanna do in this game!
My gateway to monster Hunter was World. Couldn't get into rise at all. Played mhgu and mh4u(two favorites), fell in love with mhgu the most. It can't be chalked up to nostalgia because i never played the old games back then. I played everything, relatively recently. MHGU offers so much and i don't mean the quest count either, i agree with everything you mention, all the styles, pelico mode and pelico (everything to do with them), the beautiful atmosphere,i loved how much heart and beauty they added using segmented map, it feels a thrill to fight in those areas and to just stare at the art. It makes me wish, however unlikely, that one day we may get modern game akin to old segmented world with similar visuals and ton of monsters. I don't care about the million Pixel counts and 4k textures. I want art style, i want soul to games. I really really want it to be segmented maps to phase in and out of, and the devs to go ham in making each segments colorful and full of characters/sceneries in the distance all the while performance being great because of the segment and lower pixel counts
Insinuating that the high fidelity graphics ruins the games soul is ridiculous. I'm a massive old gen fan but the attention to detail in wilds is insane. If you follow monsters around they actually behave like actual animals. The attention to detail and world building are unmatched.
@@QLMTAI didn't mention wilds. No one is insinuating high fidelity is ruining anything, but rather that I love the art style of mhgu, your talking about functionality of the environment being a improvement to which I don't disagree. My point was the scenes, the vistas in each of those tiny segments areas were beautiful like paintings and the color palette of GU was gorgeous. I hated worlds art, I found it functionally great but aesthetically noisy and unappealing and a chore on my eyes very quickly. Now, I mentioned nothing about Wilds so here's my opinion on wilds, I'm loving everything I am seeing on it aside from the decrease in hit stops, I am adoring the color palette, I found rise and world noisy and or unappealing, where as mhgu had that third space feeling similar to when you watch studio Ghibli film, with its moments of peace where the camera allows the noise to die down and let's you hear the chugging of the train and watch the passing scene unfold across the window while characters just sit and do nothing. That's the appeal of MHGU for me, it has the highs and it has the lows and that balance feels cathartic.
Generations has tons of issues. While It wasn't my first game, it was the game that made me a MH fan and will forever have a special place in my heart, but there are so many little things that are infuriating to me. Pick axes and bug nets breaking, combining having a chance to fail, obscure mission progression, clunky controls, and (IMO) a poor solo experience just to name a few. The game is a true gem that I would recommend any MH fan play, but I would never suggest it's "The Best" as QoL is very important to me. World did so much when it came to QoL that it's hard for me to want to go back and play GU. I also find the complaints against it laughable to me. Things like restocking at camp or weapons and armor designs just don't make sense to me. I always found the wacky designs in the earlier games meh at best, preferring the down to earth designs more, so World did solid by me. And restocking at camp is a God dam choice, if you don't like it don't fucking do it. Yes it's optimal but optimal play isn't the only way to play a game, and not all options need to be taken. In my opinion World beats GU, GU beats Rise, and Rise beats all previous games. I have played 4U but never really liked it, and have been unable to obtain a copy of any other MH game, but I highly doubt that the older games will ever climb higher on my list. I'm hoping Wilds becomes my new favorite but we will have to see. Still GU is a treasure worth playing at least once and a unique experience that I will find myself missing from time to time.
You have every right to your opinion and just by reading this I can tell you’re not a classic monster hunter player. You started in 5th gen so your perspective is warped because you’re going backwards in terms of releases. All the quality of life changes made sense but you also have to realize that’s your base of what monster hunter is. That’s completely fine btw. All I’m pointing out is people who have been here way before 5th gen and see the value in certain things that exist in classic monster hunters that were part of the experience and value that experience. It’s extremely difficult to have that Insight if you weren’t there from the jump. Case in point the 99% of comments that agree with me. Also you said rise beats mh4u,mh3u and mhfu 😂😂😂 that is enough said alone
Briefly played Generations on the 3DS, but Ultimate on the Switch was my real introduction to the series. Also, both of these are in fact main series, just for the record. Speaking about that, there were actually 9 to 10 new large monsters (depends on whether you count Ahtal Neset like Capcom) and 3 new small monsters introduced. Also, for the record, I hate Trump a lot, so seeing something in favor of him immediately put me in a bad mood (never a good idea to insert politics into the conversation when not relevant).
Yea I see people are saying it’s main series so ig it’s not a next gen game it’s still gen 4 so that’s why I said spin off And you shouldn’t let anyone in life have the ability to make you emotional just on seeing their name, that’s weird get help.
I’ve played every single monster hunter expect the first game and portable third, the first game is known to be extremely clunky and is missing a lot of basic features and weapons the series’s has been accustomed too. So nobody even the people who have played it say it’s the best. So based on that observation I’ll rule out monster hunter one. Monster hunter portable third Is a Japan exclusive release. I don’t read Japanese and it wasn’t released in the USA. So based on monster hunters that are USA released and aren’t the first game, I’ve concluded generations is the best game in the series.

GU is my jam. The relentless yet demanding hyper-aggression of the Aerial Style Insect Glaive is something that no other game lets you experience. It is addicting to me
The best thing about it being that it really demands you to be skilled to use it to its full potential, because if you mistime a vault you're dead.
Recently got MHGU on Switch on sale for $15 and this has been an interesting title no doubt. Really like the Hunting Arts and such. Also I might be biased because I liked Rise (and the Silkbind abilities) and I can see where Rise got some of its inspiration from
Well time to start re downloading the game on my 3ds
Play it on switchhhh the 3ds version doesn’t have the DLC
i always replay mhgu than my sunbreak
Mhgu is just superior in my opinion but I also enjoy sunbreak
I bought MHGU and was put off by how odd it felt. I REALLY want to get into it though looking at the roster and the styles and stuff. Does anyone have suggestions on what weapons/styles I should try to get into this game? I mained Charge Blade/Insect Glaive in MHW & Dual Blades in MHR.
Keep using charge blade it’s OP
In gen 4 and use guild style at first because it doesn’t change the move set and it will allow you to use two hunter arts. You might have to get used to the movement but it shouldn’t be too difficult
Adept Dual Blades is peak
Adept DB, heal on both palico, always figting, brain activated 100% then Pokke theme brain resting is the way
3u is my favorite cause of nostalgia. that's the one I really got into with the boys but the best one is hands down gu. Valor ls is life
Same 3u had a very unique feel that has not been replicated and that was my first game ever
So you mean you can play monster hunter old gen with new gen gameplay? That's sick!
There is a great HD mod for this game as well as a Rebalance mod that makes stuff stronger in general. Also a 60 fps mod.
I mean, this game have the Pokke theme. (REMIXED TO GOD TIER btw)
Instant 20/20, sorry Elden Ring, you can't compete even with your AaaahaHHaaaaaHHHa
Edit serious : the first map + the first monster is really the best introduction to the serie. It's so well done.
I respect that take
I might be an outlier but I started on rise n I still play rise when I want none grindy fast fights but gu is so deep n has so much farming n u can always play as palico to make combat feel faster paced
That’s completely understandable. Doesn’t matter where you start in my opinion I just hope we find common ground when wilds comes 😏
I still hope one day there will come a MH like in the old days MH retro xD
Makes two of us my friend
This game DESPERATELY NEEDS a pc port. I really hope they decide to do so.
If only capcom would port it and other games to steam, but I guess they are too busy making shoes for the 20th anniversary 🙄
Mhgu is main series btw
I agree it’s just the best game and it’s not really close when it comes to the depth of this game and the content. Plus I’m a sucker for the old hunting aesthetic. And oh that’s great then I thought it was a “spin off title”
@@DracosPerspective for some reason, internally both mh teams call every expansion a spinoff (including iceborne) even though that's not how the definition for a spinoff works lol
But regardless, mhxx (mhgu) shows up in the mainline anniversary video from years ago, which definitively shows its mainline.
The mh teams are just weird with how they refer to things for some reason sometimes.
Ultimately wilds has to reach 100 big monsters before its development will be stoped
I always say Tri and 4U are my favorites, but unlike those games GenU has a normal controller
You are completely right!
Much appreciated boss! And nice lucario profile picture
@DracosPerspective thank you!
Imo generations ult, 4 ult, and rise go hard as hell world goes on a new level but can break formula habit that the others have so I can't wait for wilds cause the beta had the best of both worlds so far
Yea wilds has crazy potential. I can’t wait to play it with my subs
@DracosPerspective pray we get a flagship monster gauntlet of all the old flagship and final monsters
Don’t even gotta watch the video to know every detail is correct. This game is the best.
Much appreciated
I wish theyd bring this to PC i would try it
Mod it
Hell yeah mhgu and sunbreak are easily my favorite games in the series for the combat alone
This is that kind of a game that "backlog" happens.
That’s more than okay
My first ever MH game was 4U, i loved it same with GU, i recently bought Rise and dont get me wrong its an ok game but it feels like its missing the love and care the older ones had
100% rise missed out on a lot of that charm
In defense of loading zones, they actually make the map feel bigger without needing to make it bigger, I like world, but those maps... are a burden to traverse some times, clasic MH games make the maps feel huge with the power of imagination without the meed to make them annoying
I can't hate on MHGU Capcom went hard on it.
I love and hate that this was my first MH because I think it kinda spoiled me.
Understandable
i want them to port like 3u and 4u to switch so i can finally play them it would be really great
Hell yea especially mh3u I miss that game
Mh4u is goated too
Your opinion you say? You are Objectively Correct so its valid.
Much appreciated!
MHGU is goated but my biggest problems are the deviant system and the lack of good maps. Also where tf is Qurupeco? Imagine how many different monsters he could've called in.
What is wrong with the deviant system?
@DracosPerspective Way too much ticket grinding.
@@charyan2878 I see
Totaly agree ! 1 mhgu 2 iceborne 3 mh4u 4 subreak 5 frontier
That’s a great top 5 my personal five would be
1.mhgu 2.mh4u 3.iceborne 4.mh3u 5.mhfu
lmao I just played with that zenthos guy 2 days ago
Nostalgia plays a big role my guy. This a 17 min video, but you glaze this game for 11 of it ez.
Now with that said, I got it on switch now. Sale was like $10 bro.
Does that change the fact that I’m right?
So basically you call it glazing out of ignorance? Yeah, shut up and go play it, you're in for peak MH
(If it is there lmk and I'll delete this one.)
The part of the argument that is dumb is that everyone that I have heard complain about it like the game forces you to restock when you get low on healing items and completely ignores the fact that you can just choose not to restock.
I'm getting close to G rank for the first time and I'm ready for the pain 😂 Adept GS is my crutch
Classic g rank is brutal!
@DracosPerspective I've heard it can get a little dicey 🤣
Up until the day yuzu and citra got shutdown by Nintendo online lobbies for these games we're still CROWDED. You can still play multiplayer but yuzu and citra won't list the lobbies for you, so you gotta direct connect to your friends. I'm sure whoever forked the projects though will bring working lobbies back
Woaw. I didn't know until now that you can go to camp to get resources again when out of stock in Monster Hunter Rise 😅 what I did when I'm out of pots, I'll go to the other areas to get herb and stuff and combine it again to make pots. 😆😅
That was the classic way of doing things 😂
@@DracosPerspective haha yeah. I'm one of those classic hunters doing these things. The more classic, the more realistic it is. 😆
No of course I loved 4u sooo much i completely understand and thanks for sharing
Why not compare with rise?
I’m getting there
Monster Hunter 4 ultimate is number 1 ❤
I understand
I respectfully disagree. But it is an awesome game maybe my 3rd fave.
What’s your top 2 then ?
nah 4u is still the best
I agree 100%. It’ll never happen unfortunately 🙃
MH4u is the best one so far though
Wish I could play it, but I ain’t got a switch. Nintendo always does the rest of us dirty with their ass cheek 9000 console xD
I get it bought the switch just for the game alone
Fact
Rise and world are good, mhgu was the last great game in the series
Agreed
MHGU is the definition of quantity over quality.
It's a fun and great game but a terrible Monster Hunter just like Rise
How does this game sacrifice its quality ? Story doesn’t count because it’s not a narrative game. And what makes it a terrible monster hunter game ?
It’s extremely difficult to have that
Insight if you weren’t there from the jump.
After playing Rise/Sunbreak, going back to MHGU feels awful.
L take
No, no it's not it's an okay game but I don't think it's a good Monster Hunter game.
Eeeyyyyyy
wait, how can you say generations is the best one if you haven't played all of them?
I’ve played every single monster hunter expect the first game and portable third, the first game is known to be extremely clunky and is missing a lot of basic features and weapons the series’s has been accustomed too. So nobody even the people who have played it say it’s the best. So based on that observation I’ll rule out monster hunter one. Monster hunter portable third Is a Japan exclusive release. I don’t read Japanese and it wasn’t released in the USA. So based on monster hunters that are USA released and aren’t the first game, I’ve concluded generations is the best game in the series.
Very good :)
I've seen P3rd's PS3 port on sites like Ebay so I might get it... Maybe...
@@DracosPerspective bro you should try playing Portable 3rd, arguably the best MH game in PSP aesthetically. It recently won the PSP Generations Award, its just a great game overal. English patches are readily available in the internet which really helped me back then to enjoy this game
There is an english patch for P3 that you can play on emulator.
My comment got Ninja'd... Anyway, I've seen copies of the PS3 port being sold online, and I'm personally more interested in those over emulating it
