This song's meaning is "where are you papa?" For anyone who does not understand this, the boy is feeling neglected by his father so he finds comfort in his imagination and he plays by himself--his toys (the band). This song was initially by Stromae whose father died in a genocide when he was a boy. (rather than neglecting him). For those who don't know him, you should check him out his rendition of this song is also fantastic. I'm a big fan of both Stromae and Pentatonix!!
From what I heard, his father wasn't really there for him even before the genocide. And the second verse is basically him wondering how good of a father he will be with only his own absentee father as an example.
As a french person, i think that this one of the best prononciation of this language by a person that speak english (don't know if it is understandable 😅)
Im french and i completly agree. And the fact that they sing it so well is impressive. Accents come out more when you sing, so i respect them a lot for that
I lived in France (paris) over a year and also listen to a lot of French music including some by English speakers and I aggree. I have a good ear for languages and accents
Clara, I'm not French. Can you please answer this. In the original, he pronounced "Ca doit" as "Sa "dhu" wa" like he enunciated the dhu part. But in every cover, including this one, they pronounced "Ca doit" like "saadhwa" Which one is correct? Please clarify.

The fiddle playing may not have actually been perfect, the audio was almost certain recorded in a studio before the music video visuals were recorded, so they're dubbing over themselves and the notes while dancing don't have to be good.
@@OrigamiMarie I have been to her live concert, she does do a few small mistakes but that's to be expected when she is dancing so much. But she is quite good. For reference, I have completed grade 10 ARCT (Royal Conservatory of music)
Right? I would love to see this kind of dedication from other artists :) but there are just some limitations and other things that get in the way I suppose.
I can imagine what happened... Editor #1: Whoa, I found a weird bug in the programming where she just flies up like that, we need to fix it. Editor #2: No, no, let's leave it in and see how many people notice, that's hilarious. Either that or she got possessed.
"Child imagines his toys singing and dancing as an escape because they'll never neglect him like his dad does but the pain of never getting affection from his father creeps in to his imagination and his toys start singing about how much the child wishes his dad loved him." *cough cough* uhh I mean "[Official Video] Papaoutai - Pentatonix ft. Lindsey Stirling (Stromae Cover)". My bad.
Jack Frost amazing analysis!!! thank you very much. upon seeing your comment, the video kinda makes sense and tbh, I don't have a dad as it is, so I would relate to the kid way more than I'd like to. either way, thanks.
Can we talk about Avi sustaining his bass note from 1:55 - 2:10, 15 straight seconds without a break🤯. That's one hell of breath control!!🔥🔥 Avi is something else🔥
Gotta admit I was very excited when I searched for papoutai and a pentatonix result popped up but the result is very disappointing. Scott doesn't do a bad job but I just find this cover doesn't add anything different or special. Just a lesser version of the original imo.
English lyrics (translated from French). Enjoy!: Tell me where he's from So I'll know where am I'm going Mom says when you search well You always end up finding She says he's not far away That he always goes to work Mom says working is good Better than bad company, right? Where's your daddy? Tell me, where's your daddy? Without even talking to him He knows when things aren't going well God damn, dad! Tell me where you're hiding It must have been a thousand times That I have counted on my fingers Where are you, daddy, where are you? Where are you, daddy, where are you? Where are you, daddy, where are you? Where are you, daddy, where are you? What? Believe it or not There'll be a day when we won't believe anymore A day or another, we'll all be dads And a day or another, we'll all dissapear Will we be despicable? Will we be admired? Genes or geniuses? Tell us who gives birth to irresponsible people Ah, tell us who! Here Everyone knows how to make babies But no one knows how to become a dad Sir Knows It All inherited it, heh? Like, do we need to suck it off our thumbs or what? Tell us where it's hidden, it must have been A thousand times that we have gobbled up our fingers Where are you, daddy, where are you? Where are you, daddy, where are you? Where are you, daddy, where are you? Where are you, daddy, where are you? Where are you, daddy, where are you? Where are you, daddy, where are you? Where are you, daddy, where are you? Where are you, daddy, where are you? Where's your daddy? Tell me, where's your daddy? Where are you, daddy, where are you?
NY Aquatics hello, i'm french and my english teatchers don't put any english songs in my classroom 😭 (we answer if we can put a song but they Said no 😂) I don't know if you understand this but i "espère" 😊
Jusine slr "espère" is hope I think? Just a friendly tip from an English speaker trying to learn French. Instead of saying "we answer if we can put a song" we would say, "we ask if we can play a song" since "answer" = "répond" and "ask" = "demande".
Megan Escareño The title is a stylized alteration of "Papa, ou t'es?" that is, "Father, where are you?". It's a song about losing his father during the Rwandan genocide. The original artist writes very powerful and entertaining songs.
Cassafinn I know that now. I looked up the song in English and it's meaning, and yes, the original artist is very good and does write entertaining and powerful songs.
Even after all these years this is an impressive performance. Seeing the group do this and sign a song in French phonetically without actually knowing the language is just wow. The level of accuracy on pronunciation is incredible and the moments where it's not as accurate just give a "Inner child speaking through the adult voice" feel to it, which matches the "missing father" message of the song.
They're Canucks stupie head, they learn this crap at school. For the very same reason you can easily find Aussies who can pronounce Mandarin without knowing the language. Enough exposure makes it easy.

Well done PTX on a song in French! Great delivery & arrangement. Lindsey blends so seamlessly. You guys worked on enunciation and pulled it off remarkably! The Toy Story-like visual was a nice idea, such a contrast with the actual depth of the lyrics. I hope you'll continue stepping out of your comfort zone, singing in other languages.
Grrr :)
MERCI !
Amen. I don't support but I want to because this is incredible. A combination of more money from Sony and Patreon can create such an incredible video with great affects. Probably the most produced they've ever done other than We Are Ninjas. I almost typed We Ate Ninjas. Lol. Can't wait to see your reaction on TH-cam!
Heather Feather This song is about a guy looking for his father and wondering what makes a father in general. He explains the pain to live without his father (what the singer really lived). Sorry for my broken English, i'm French ^^ PS : love your vids Heather keep going !
Hey ! I am french and this song is one of the most famous hits of France, I love this version (with an accent !) Actually they are speaking well very french, Bravo !
So glad that english speaking people covered a song in French ! Usually it's more the contrary, you're really good at singing in French though 'cause it's a quite hard language !
Credit to whoever did the makeup and effects for this video! They really look like plastic dolls come to life! Really hitting that Uncanny Valley effect well!
lol, I was like wtf why does my trusty adblock not work? (on my desktop pc it has blocked 99,999% of all ads for a decade so i am not used to seeing ads , except on mobile)
i cant even imagine how hard this would have been to sing. honestly, especially the rapping with all the unfamiliar pronunciations and word sounds (i dont know how to explain it haha)
***** Especially for the "r". I'm french and most of the anglophone people just can't pronounce the french "r". I can't imagine how long they trained. Their pronunciation and even accent is really great!
Plumper Do its not uncommon for a violinist to start to move their bodies to the beat and sound of the music while they play once they get their own feelings into it. Lindsey have obviously gotten into her music to the point where she can dance as she pleases while still playing. Bravo for her! though not the first of its kind I might add.
I'm surprised by the fact that even though he has a heavy accent when he sings, he actually doesn't say the words wrong. I would've thought he could actually speak french!
it's actually not that unusual for singers to pick up accents in foreign songs it adds to make the song sound authentic and most singers find it fun to do
Even though I love Pentatonix (gosh they're so talented! I can't even!) and I'm glad Stromae got so popular that even americans make covers of his songs, I'd like to advise anyone to check out the original because Stromae is a genius and no one can even come close to his level when covering him, no matter how talented.
My french class listened to the original for an assignment! We all became obsessed with his music over time and were so happy when PTX came out with this cover. :)
One of their most re-watchable videos, I think. Amazing as Pentatonix is when they are singing a capella, a couple of well-played stringed instruments like here take them over the top. While the original Stromae video makes a bit more sense with the actual father lyrics, this Pentatonix version is much more fun to watch and listen to. I keep hitting the repeat! Love it!

Brandon 7.11 Ndn Thanks so much for putting the french and english words together in the translation, way beter than just having the english translation!
Julz Zedbra, I think it's also the fact that he's opening his eyes pretty wide to get the "doll look". He usually has more expressions when he sings (and yes! that affects his eyebrows too, haha) - especially when he starts belting or getting into the higher registers.
For the non-french speakers this song is from a belgium singer name Stromae and it is about his own father who died during Rwandan genocide, here a lyrics translation by me : Tell me where he comes from Finaly I would know where I am going Mum says when we looking carfully we always end up finding She says he is never far away, he go work often Mom says "working is good better than being in bad company" Isn't it ? Where is your dad ? They may have mistake in english grammar because I am french but that's how I translate this song
This cover is just amazing ! ❤ As a singer myself, and as a French person, I can tell this song is quite of a challenge. What a speedy text to sing for foreigners. Once again, Pentatonix did a GREAT JOB !
Well, I'm french and he has an awesome accent, great pronunciation and everything, so I think he actually speaks French, he didn't just learned the lyrics, it would have been less comprehensible if he didn't speak french ^^
CloudsHideTheSun Not necessarily, technically speaking EVERYONE is dying right now... so she might not be dead yet :) (If you don't understand, Every second that passes brings us one step closer to death so in a sense, we are all dying right now)
Yep! One of my favorites... The singing (in French no less), the doll dancing (poor Avi had hurt his back so wasn't moving much, but it still had to hurt), the makeup. Outstanding!

My friend introduced the original song to me two years ago and I've freaking loved it. She only recently mentioned that she found the song because of the Pentatonix remix and I'm like, "There's a Pentatonix remix?" Boom. Here it is. good stuff
This is truly amazing, guys! The makeup is amazing, and the video and song is even better! Hope you guys do more amazing collabs like this with Lindsey! Keep up the amazing work!
I can't believe that I watched this 10 years ago, and now I finally recognize the name Stromae. Imagine my surprise when I listened to "Ma Meilleure Ennemie" on repeat for hours after watching Arcane, suddenly had the urge to listen to Pentatonix's Christmas songs, went through their channel history and found a video with the name "Stromae" in the title. It's crazy to think that it's been 10 years and so much has changed but some things never will.
Dude...his video always gut punch me in the feels
Yep, Stromae's dad died with the many others during the Rwandan Genocide in the 1990s
From what I heard, his father wasn't really there for him even before the genocide. And the second verse is basically him wondering how good of a father he will be with only his own absentee father as an example.
yup, same.
stromae's own father actually died during the 1994 rwandan genocide
CAN WE TALK ABOUT HOW KEVIN IS CASUALLY KILLIN IT ON THE CELLO?! WHO KNEW! That man has infinite talents I swear to god
The Trio first discovered Kevin on a TH-cam video playing the cello while beat boxing

He's so talented, great singing voice too. I'm digging Kevin's funky beard, it looks good on him he could pull that off IRL
+Corey Holt he can rap too

As a french person, i think that this one of the best prononciation of this language by a person that speak english (don't know if it is understandable 😅)
it is, and you are right, french is my second language and they have a better accent as I do ^^
Im french and i completly agree.
But in every cover, including this one, they pronounced "Ca doit" like "saadhwa"
Which one is correct? Please clarify.

Me: Struggling to walk normally on a daily basis
Lindsey: Let me play this fiddle perfectly while dancing ballet!

@@alexdelarge5373 I am aware that the audio is studio quality, but Lindsey does a lot of dancing and such at her concerts too and it's crazy to me

LMAOO
The fact that they learned a whole song in a different language shows how dedicated and talented they are. amaaaazing job :))))
Right? I would love to see this kind of dedication from other artists :) but there are just some limitations and other things that get in the way I suppose.
it's not actually that hard, foreign people do it all the time, i leant this when i was 13 (i'm from england)
thealiceim they never learnt french maybe except 1 of dem nd they took classes only fr dis song
They actually did it already with Gangnam Style, which in my opinion seems (even) harder to accomplish! They are indeed amazing!
Ya I knw Korean is harder den french
Lindsey Sterling is the definition of when your parents forced you to take violin lessons but you wanted to be a dancer
actually she wanted to do both but they could only afford one or the other and she picked violin :) love that she now gets to combine both
@@kerriskb19 ohh I didn't know.. Thanks!
I would say she is the best combination of both.
lol. :') (that's kinda sad tho.)

Jack Frost amazing analysis!!! thank you very much. upon seeing your comment, the video kinda makes sense and tbh, I don't have a dad as it is, so I would relate to the kid way more than I'd like to. either way, thanks.

There are two types of people: people who find Scott singing in french very attractive, and liars
Liam Benson and lesbians
And people who find the doll make-up creepy.
... Or people who know the original and find this dodgy
I'm a liar
Gotta admit I was very excited when I searched for papoutai and a pentatonix result popped up but the result is very disappointing. Scott doesn't do a bad job but I just find this cover doesn't add anything different or special. Just a lesser version of the original imo.

I love this...I understand none of this but I love this so much 😍😂 Lindsay, as always, was amazing!! She is one of the best violinist I listen to!! 😍
Hi Megan
Patrick Thompson Hallo
Megan Escareño The title is a stylized alteration of "Papa, ou t'es?" that is, "Father, where are you?". It's a song about losing his father during the Rwandan genocide. The original artist writes very powerful and entertaining songs.
Cassafinn I know that now. I looked up the song in English and it's meaning, and yes, the original artist is very good and does write entertaining and powerful songs.
Lindsey is not a great violinist. I'm not saying that she's the worst, but she's not near the best.
"Fine Scott. We'll do your french song. Just this once."
I think that the title of this video should be changed to this comment
Haha
Grace Harlan Best title ever!
+Grace Harlan Oh man yes :p
+Dylan Johnson :l its french but hes from Belgium :3
Even after all these years this is an impressive performance. Seeing the group do this and sign a song in French phonetically without actually knowing the language is just wow. The level of accuracy on pronunciation is incredible and the moments where it's not as accurate just give a "Inner child speaking through the adult voice" feel to it, which matches the "missing father" message of the song.
They're Canucks stupie head, they learn this crap at school. For the very same reason you can easily find Aussies who can pronounce Mandarin without knowing the language. Enough exposure makes it easy.
Whoa, how are all those dolls so lifelike?! It's like they're actually the real thing! Pretty amazing how far we've gotten.
Not sure if joke, or person who doesn't know? Lol but they are just wearing make up to make them look like dolls
bob masters Joking. I knew this was a risk to write because it wasn't quite clearly stated enough.

Oh the words in English! Thanks!
I totally agree with evrything you said!
Grrr :)
très belle reprise, ils sont géniaux
ça fait plaisir!
Julie Bélec ils gèrent à mort en français 😍
Julie Bélec je me demande juste si ils comprennent ce qu'ils disent
8 years on and I will forever be grateful to Pentatonix for introducing me to Stromae ❤️
This is where our Patreon money went with all the makeup and effects and everything... money well spent PTX! Best PTX video ever!
Good video, but not the best of PTX.
Hi Ahmed! I like your reaction movies!!
Sub !
Blez
Was that you mentioned in the special thanks?
I have no idea what you guys are saying, but I love this!
I'm with you Heather. And now I'm heading to one of your videos to relax. :)
Heather, I freaking love your videos :D!!
Thanks for helping me sleep at night
Heather Feather This song is about a guy looking for his father and wondering what makes a father in general. He explains the pain to live without his father (what the singer really lived). Sorry for my broken English, i'm French ^^
PS : love your vids Heather keep going !
"Papaoutai" is "Papa où t'es ?"
which is "Daddy, where are you ?"
TheYoupss Thanks Youpss I love the original video by Stromae, great theme
never realized how much i love that it's a little boy playing with his PTX dolls
Hey ! I am french and this song is one of the most famous hits of France, I love this version (with an accent !)
Actually they are speaking well very french, Bravo !
I thought Stromae is Belgian? or you mean the song is popular in France?
@@Azlite74 Stromae is a belgian citizen indeed...
@@Azlite74 I think he meant it was a huge hit in France. We all know he’s Belgian.
@@Azlite74 So a belgian artist can't be popular in france ?
@@Quentin_L that's not what Azlite meant, Azlite thought Louise didn't know the song was from a belgian artist
As a french girl, I have to say their accent is very sweet.
I totally agree
Misao Misao its ok man i just found this now
I heard that they brought in French teachers to help with the song and their accents. Guess it paid off big time.
I'm German and I'm jealous because I did skip french classes after it became optional
Not saying that french is bad but you did the right thing :P
As a belgian person, it just makes me happy to hear this song so good performed
So glad that english speaking people covered a song in French ! Usually it's more the contrary, you're really good at singing in French though 'cause it's a quite hard language !
They had to hire a French tutor
I think Scott knows French a bit
English people, which you mean Scott. xD
well they aren't English.. but they're English-speaking people.. 😂👌
sorry didnt mean to offend..
well they aren't English.. but they're English-speaking people.. 😂👌

Credit to whoever did the makeup and effects for this video! They really look like plastic dolls come to life! Really hitting that Uncanny Valley effect well!
I mentioned this elsewhere, but this is in intentional homage to the official video of Papaoutai.
Anyone else try to skip the ad before realising it was the beginning of the video?
I did😂😂
lol, I was like wtf why does my trusty adblock not work? (on my desktop pc it has blocked 99,999% of all ads for a decade so i am not used to seeing ads , except on mobile)

I find it amazing that they learned a whole french song even though they are anglophone!
What is an anglophone? XD
Simon Mendoza anglophone is a french word. An anglophone is someone who speaks english
FruityNugget Oh ok thanks
FruityNugget You learn something new every day, I guess...
Yeah, it's weird that americans can learn a whole foreign song. Usually they puke at the thought of anything outside the borders of the USA.
i cant even imagine how hard this would have been to sing. honestly, especially the rapping with all the unfamiliar pronunciations and word sounds (i dont know how to explain it haha)
***** Especially for the "r". I'm french and most of the anglophone people just can't pronounce the french "r".
I can't imagine how long they trained. Their pronunciation and even accent is really great!
Manon Ingrassia I took french for a year in high school and even just trying to master the french accent is so hard, let alone mastering the 'r'!
Manon Ingrassia I think I heard somewhere that Scott has some French heritage, so maybe he had more interesting in learning it
***** They hired a french teacher to personally teach them how to pronounce all that they would need to know
***** Is the 'r' sound in French any close to Spanish? I know English and Spanish, and learning French a bit
Kevin can beat-box whilst playing the cello and Lindsey can dance while playing violin. Can we just talk about that for a second?
Yes. Talk.
Plumper Do i mean, what cant lindsey do while playing violin
dennis schomaker XD True!
Plumper Do very cool!
Plumper Do
its not uncommon for a violinist to start to move their bodies to the beat and sound of the music while they play once they get their own feelings into it. Lindsey have obviously gotten into her music to the point where she can dance as she pleases while still playing. Bravo for her! though not the first of its kind I might add.

i dont think Lindsey could stand still and play the violin even if she wanted XD love it
that's actually a good quality to have lol. she is truly amazing
+EgholmViking Physicaly Impossible
I'm surprised by the fact that even though he has a heavy accent when he sings, he actually doesn't say the words wrong. I would've thought he could actually speak french!
Little Red Kitsune He can tho.
it's actually not that unusual for singers to pick up accents in foreign songs it adds to make the song sound authentic and most singers find it fun to do
Even though I love Pentatonix (gosh they're so talented! I can't even!) and I'm glad Stromae got so popular that even americans make covers of his songs, I'd like to advise anyone to check out the original because Stromae is a genius and no one can even come close to his level when covering him, no matter how talented.
He is really famous in Turkey. When this song plays on radio you can hear everyone trying to sing but failing :D they can only sing the chorus xD
I even heard a cover made by a korean group called led apple ^^
I think this cover is a lot better tbh. Part of it could be because its French and im not but idk.
My french class listened to the original for an assignment! We all became obsessed with his music over time and were so happy when PTX came out with this cover. :)
Yeah I love Pentatonix but the original song and video is better and has more feeling to me.
Love it!
Scott singing in French is the sexiest thing on earth to this day omg

Tell me where he comes from

Mommy says when you look hard enough
On finit toujours par trouver

Better to be there than in bad company, right?
Où est ton papa ?
Where is your dad?
Dis-moi où est ton papa
Tell me where is your dad?
Sans même devoir lui parler
Without even having to talk to him
Il sait ce qui ne va pas
He knows what’s wrong
Ah sacré papa
Oh my dear father

Scott looks so interesting as a doll... I think it's the eyebrows
Julz Zedbra Nah, I reckon it's just the hair in general
It's the skin and the hair I think.
Julz Zedbra And Avi looks like Keanu Reeves.
Julz Zedbra, I think it's also the fact that he's opening his eyes pretty wide to get the "doll look". He usually has more expressions when he sings (and yes! that affects his eyebrows too, haha) - especially when he starts belting or getting into the higher registers.
Julz Zedbra its the eyebrows with the lips together

Où est ton papa ?
Where is your dad?
Dis-moi où est ton papa
Tell me where is your dad?
Sans même devoir lui parler
Without even having to talk to him
Il sait ce qui ne va pas
He knows what’s wrong
Ah sacré papa
Oh my dear* father
Dis-moi où es-tu caché ?
Tell me where are you hiding?
I must’ve counted my fingers at least a thousand times
Où est ton papa ?
Where is your dad?
Dis-moi où est ton papa
Tell me where is your dad?
Sans même devoir lui parler
Without even having to talk to him
Il sait ce qui ne va pas
He knows what’s wrong
Ah sacré papa
Oh my dear* father
Dis-moi où es-tu caché ?
Tell me where are you hiding?

You guys should sing in French more often. Your pronunciation is perfect.
Actualy it´s far form being perfect but it´s still really good
Noo they clearly are mispronouncing some things. There's an obvious english accent to it. But accent aside, the music is great.
zoko1994 I think it is perfect, considering they don't speak French. I don't think it could get any better than that :)
***** Na accent is still english-y
I like your name ;)
My friend introduced the original song to me two years ago and I've freaking loved it. She only recently mentioned that she found the song because of the Pentatonix remix and I'm like, "There's a Pentatonix remix?" Boom. Here it is. good stuff
How I'm feeling finding this accidentally as well!
dang that girl is playin that violin like a beast
There's Lindsey Stirling for ya
Elan Ma Lindsey rocks out!
You should see the other things Lindsey's done
Her dubstep violin album is the best.#Crystalise
Gracie Dunbar dancing violinist.. :0) It's what she does. She's probably in better shape then 90% of all violinists because of it.

It's normal that this song is addictive???
Genesis Condo Yes. Yes it is.
