I've owed my Tacoma TRD Offroad for 1 year. It's a 2018 and I love it. Ya, it doesn't have all the bells and whistles but I'll take the dependability anytime!

Hey Cheyne, I have a 2017 Tacoma TRD Pro and the wife has a 2016 4Runner, and I wanted to comment about the non-locking tailgate issue. You can go into the settings inside the cab and change the automatic lock and unlock settings. At least on my 2017 you can change it so that keyless entry will unlock/lock all of the doors including the tailgate. You can also change it so that keyless entry only unlocks/locks the drivers door. On that same note you can also change the remote settings to do similar things. One press will unlock/lock everything including the tailgate, or you can change it so that one press will unlock/lock the drivers door only and a second press will unlock/lock everything else. I think that it is pretty customizable in this sense. When I first got the truck I got so used to just grabbing the handle when I get out of the truck to lock it. I would find myself walking to the back of the truck and realizing I just locked the tailgate with the keyless entry system before I got what I needed out of the back. I would suggest that you play around with the setting and see if it is still the same for the 2018. I find it hard to believe that Toyota would change that, it would be silly if they did. I hope you can find a solution before you go and buy some aftermarket part if you don't need it. Good luck!

Hey I noticed that you have a garage door opener clipped to the drivers visor but I also noticed that Toyota also provided the 3 garage door openers on your rear view mirror like I have on my 2014 FJ Cruiser. Do you realize that you could use the garage door opener on your rear view mirror and chuck the garage door opener remote that you have clipped to your visor? It's a simple and easy setup.
One more note on reliability. I hate the fact that even with my FJ Cruiser that I had to take it into the dealership for the scheduled maintenance. And spending about a half a day going to and from the dealership and enduring the wait in the waiting room. I cannot imagine having to do this if something broke if I could avoid it and the way that I avoid the utter waste of time is to buy a TOYOTA!

There’s more Tacoma’s on the road from the last 25 years than all Chevy’s combined. Chevy dies. Most American cars do. 5 to 10 years of daily grinding on a Chevy and you’ll be dropping thousands and thousands in maintenance. Toyota’s do not die. My dad drove a T100 to 600,000+ miles and only did normal routine stuff and replaced one alternator. 600,000 miles and the most major maintenance was an alternator replacement.

I was at a Transmission shop and asked the 2 owners what they see the most of. 1 of them told me they had 5 newer Chevys in last week, then he told me that Ford & Chrysler were no better. I then asked them what they see the least of and they both said in unison "Toyota's". Spoke volumes and thats what brought me to this video as I'm researching trucks. The Nissan has the best warranty but these Toyota's have the highest dependability so its a tough choice but I'm leaning more toward the Toyota for dependability and resale value.

Man, hilarious people on here saying a truck like the ZR2 dominates the Tacoma for $10k less. My 2007 4WD Doublecab has 260,000km and its still a baby! Last year I had to spend my first non maintenance repairs in the 10 years I've owned it! It needed an alternator. And as the owner of a landscape business I work it hard daily. When you factor in all the repairs for your Chevy or Ford over 10 years, lost time getting those repairs done, and the superior resale value of Toyotas over domestic its not even close. I cant afford NOT to own a Tacoma!! 10 years, 1 alternator! Unreal.

    • @jamesnm21

Nothing beats reliabity that just never gives out day after day after day... It's almost a shock when you actually have to replace something. I need 3/4 ton trucks for what i do and they have their own needs, but a vehicle that just runs is a great asset.

I don't mean to be critical but I've heard so many reviewers of this truck using the comment of searching for gears and it's not so. They make it sound like a defect. To get the best gas mileage the engine is setup to run in a higher gear reducing RPM when possible. So it only makes sense that it has to down shift on even smaller inclines to keep moving at the same speed. I do not use the cruise control much because that is where I see it happening the most while it maintains the set speed. I control the speed myself while allowing the speed to drop slightly going up incline to get the better gas mileage. Someone driving in a coastal or flatter area will have a different experience than someone driving in a hilly or mountain area. As another viewer stated use the ECT button to change the shift points if this is bothersome. Also the "S" on the gear selector is not a manual or sport mode as you see on a Corolla. When you shift from drive to S your are telling the transmission to use gears 1-4 only and by shifting up or down you increase or decrease that range. The speed of the truck determines what gear in that range it will use. Read the owners manual and test it for yourself as there's a lot of good information in it! Very nice truck and video!

I had a 2017 and loved it, this is the best midsize truck. I personally found the seating position comfortable, the seats themselves are excellent. The truck just has a more car like position. I found the power good, the shifting was different but acceptable. Loved the interior and exterior. My TRD offroad had excellent ride quality, and the interior noise was as good as a 1/2 ton except you can hear the engine noise a bit more, but the engine sounds good to me. The interior was solid as hell, no rattles, nothing. Didn't much care using it to hual a camper, seemed to work hard. That is the primary reason I got rid of it. It was fine hauling my side by side though. I'd say if you are hauling anything heavier than 3000lbs., get a half ton. It also lacked interior storage, but smaller truck it is to be expected. I would buy another one without hesitation if that all I needed in a truck.

I was very comfortable, and I love my truck even more than I did 3 weeks ago when I bought it. I wish the transmission didn't shift into 'fuel economy' mode so eagerly, but I'm going to flash my ECU to get rid of that problem.

So that is 1.1 million kilometres...that is nuts. I agree with you there is no equal to Toyota. I will say Honda is real close but I love Toyota...my wife and I have owned three. One 2005 Corolla, 2013 Tacoma and a 2016 RAV 4...made so well. My Taco has 120 000 kms so I guess it is barely broken in. I drive the snot out of mine and I cannot kill it.

I drove mine from NC to LA to the Redwoods and back to NC and I couldn't have been happier. I LOVE my Tacoma, and it is by far my favorite vehicle I've owned. I love the ride height, the comfort is good, the only downside is the gearing doesn't give it a lot of get up and go even for a 6 cylinder. I love how it sounds, I love the back seats, I love the storage compartments. The gas mileage is good, could be better, but the styling, everything I love it. Anyone considering a Tacoma, buy one, you wont' regret, the resale value is amazing too. I was able to get it up to 26mpg on the highway on my cross country road trip.

I purchased the same truck 2 1/2 months ago, same color as well, and I love it! I have absolutely no complaints, I've done some light off roading in Big Bear CA, handles well and the shocks handled the rough terrain very well also. My one concern and probably shouldn't be, but when driving in wet weather, or after washing my truck, I noticed that some water leaks in through the hood scoop, I realize its fake and is just a cosmetic feature, but still it would be nice if it the seal worked better. If you read the manual it states that you shouldn't get water on your engine, because it could cause electrical issues, I mean how often does it rain in sunny southern california right? After replacing the hood scoop at the dealer, I learned that they all leak, pretty much wasted my time, but other then that I love my Calvery Blue TRD Tacoma Pro! Enjoyed your video, subscribed and look forward to viewing more of your content.

The 2016 and 2017 model year double-cab short-bed Tacomas are currently made in Tijuana (VINs starting in 3) and all other Tacoma configurations are made in San Antonio (VINs starting in 5). I traded in my 16 diesel Colorado z71 after 26 months and 56k miles and I can say after about 6 weeks and 4500 miles I love this new trd pro. Nothing wrong with any of the choices and I really liked the zr2 but for me I chose the right truck .. Jeremias Martinez well its not a gaser so it definitely isn't as quick as the ZR2 w/3.6 but its quick enough. The 2.8 has 380lbs TQ, i can crawl on the trails and pull a trailer very nicely. They're not the best on gas, but when I consciously drive smart, as in looking ahead at the lights and braking or accelerating accordingly, I can really notice the difference. I rarely get above 3000 rpm which helps a lot. I find that proper use of the right foot has more of an effect on the cost of driving than the price at the pump, which living in Canada as well I know gas isnt cheap here compared the the US.

Hey Robert, Thanks. It was hard to pick between the 4Runner & Tacoma. I finally chose the Tacoma mainly for its extra space, with the topper. On those long driving trips it so nice to have a full time sleeping area setup in the bed of the Tacoma. I love the 4Runner, but it was always a bit of a hassle after a 10 hour drive to move stuff around to be able to sleep in the vehicle. With the Tacoma setup I can park and be comfortable in bed within 3 mins. Yea, Tundra is too big for me. Cheers!

Check out Archive Garage Hammer hangers, they improve the ride by reducing the rear chatter inherent from the flexy stock shackle hangers, making the Pro even better.

i get 17 combined mpg! Running my tires at 32 psi. What do you run your tires at?

If you turn on the ECT switch on, the lag you get with the shifting and exceleration will improve when you need the power!! Also if you use the 10% ethanol blend gas you will be lucky to get 20mpg. I always use straight gas because in the long run it is cheeper because of the increase in mpg.

I'll stay with my 2010 TRD offroad 6 speed manual. Just hit 100k. I replaced a licensens plate bulbe at about 70k, pads and roters at 90k, this week i'll be replaceing an emissions sensor and the muffler . Outher then that every thing is factory and checks out fine. I Love the 4.0L and 6 speed manual. From daily driving to snow plowing, skidding trees and logs and halling a bed and back seat full of tools, my Tacoma does it all with no lack of power, thanks to the 4.0L, and no hunting for the right gear thanks to the 6 manual transmlssion, because I make the gear slection decisions. Gen 3's with car engines and slushbox transmissions can't compare when used to do real truck work.

John Ossendorf how much plowing do you do? Just your own driveway or.. asking because of the manual trans. And what kind of mileage do you get.

Im probably late to this, but I was looking into getting a Tundra TRD Pro, but after this review I`m leaning towards this Tacoma TRD Pro.

Cannot believe a TRD Pro doesn't come with the TRD performance intake. ADD IT and you will pick up one more mpg average. I did and like you I am very mpg conscience.

I just put a deposit on a 2019 TRD Off Road earlier today and after having a Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland; it was interesting as I went into the jeep dealership to get a new wranger or another grand Cherokee, yet as I explained I was also being in the market for a Tacoma, the sales guy was like go check out the tacoma before making a decision and I immediately fell in love with it and wanted to place it on hold while do more research tonight. This video has really helped me make my decision amongst many other videos, I will be a TACO owner later today, thanks for the video!!!

Excellent video and a great looking truck. I am a long time Jeep guy but I am considering a Tacoma TRD Offroad to keep my Jeep TJ company in the garage. Trucks simply have more storage room for gear. Fantastic channel - subbed!

Hey Cheyne, did you like the Snugtop after more usage (if you still own the truck)? I'm wondering how it handles heavy downpours...I've read elsewhere that "no truck topper is 100% waterproof" on a tacoma...I'm hoping this was wrong :)

    • @cheynewalls
      @cheynewalls  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Hey, Sorry to say my truck topper is not always 100% waterproof. I do find TINY leaks every once in a while. No leaks when the truck is parked in downpours (camping), but on my last long trip, driving alot in heavy downpours, I did notice a little bit of water gets in the bed, maybe 3 or 4 ounces. I have been able to plug the small gaps myself and haven't had any problems over the last few months. I still tho put all my stuff in containers to be extra safe. And no matter what you do a little water, especially driving in downpours, will get in where the rear glass hits the tailgate. But again its very little water, I have sleep in the bed of my truck dozens of times in the pouring rain and have never had a problem. Cheers
