    Forgot to add that Toyota went all out on the frames of these 3rd gen Tacomas... nearly rust-proof from my understanding. If you want a solid daily driver that is reliable... get a Taco... resale value and customer satisfaction speaks for itself.

    Recently traded my 2018 Chevy Colorado Z71 4x4 with 7,000 miles, for a 2019 Toyota Tacoma SR5 4x4. The Colorado was nothing but trouble. Transmission shudder started at around 1,000 miles. Leaking front differential pinion seal and also right rear brake caliper seal found to be leaking at 5,000 miles. I was told it would take 10-21 days to get the brake parts. I didn't wait for the parts I got rid of the truck instead. The truck had never been off road or abused. No reason it should have had all these issues except for G.M. making junk, in my opinion and first hand experience.

Had a Toyota Rav 4 , in 2008, wanted something different, but I needed my truck, BADLY , LOL. In 2010 bought a used 2004 Ranger, Love it! still driving today. Has a 143,000 miles, runs like new! V-6 4.0 L , loves gas, but I will drive it till it disintegrates. Nothing but Ford or Toyota for me.

      That's a good question, ask G.M. It was the last of many frustrations as to why I traded the truck for a Tacoma. I haven't checked since about the middle of July, when the dealer told me 10-21 days, but at that time I looked online, to check for myself and there wasn't a right rear brake caliper to be had anywhere online, OEM or after market for my Colorado. The earliest ship date was August 5th. Now I have no reason to check since I got my Tacoma.

      Got that right. I had a 1988 Toyota, delivered pizzas for 3 years with it, hauled everything, 318,000 miles. Only replaced clutch at 180,000. Bullet proof. Only complaint, seat position really low. Toyota FINALLY have powered seat, in 2020 SR5 and above. Praise the lord. I had a 2006 Dodge Ram 4x4 Cummings diesel. Best, awesome engine ever built for 3/4 ton truck. 24 mpg tuned. Engine surrounded by Mopar CRAP. Air conditioner replaced, (expensive and hard as shit to do), wheel bearings, ball joints replaced twice about every 50,000 mi, upper and lower control arms replaced, whole key fob, replaced 3 times, the selector for which way heat/ air-conditioning is positioned replaced, again expensive and hard to do like airconditioner. Basically junk, other than engine. Very comfortable seats, air-conditioning works awesome, when it works. Now I'm ready for Dodge lovers to send hate texts that I'm a pussy Toyota boy. If you're gonna replace a new car or truck every 3-5 years, buy whatever one you like best. If you want one last 15 plus years, and not break, buy a Toyota.

    • @facepalmdaily4404
      @facepalmdaily4404 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @snakecharmer2011 LMFAO. 1 million mile trucks don't mean anything. They say nothing about the brand. Chevy, Ford and Ram all have trucks in the million mile club. It just doesn't mean anything. If you're buying a Tundra because "they will last a million miles!" you'll be disappointed. Both those trucks were 07 models and they put 125,000 miles per year on them. Toyota sold almost 200,000 Tundras in 07. Your chances of driving a million mile Tundra are 0.001%.
      Your odometer, in general, doesn't mean squat to reliability. Everybody is harping on the wrong number. It's engine run time that matters. Take any two trucks. Put one in stop-and-go gridlock in Los Angeles for 4 hours a day. Put the other on the open highways of the Texas Panhandle 4 hours a day. When the trucks start to break down, guaranteed the LA truck will have fewer miles on the odometer. Engine run time and driving conditions. An argument could be made that Toyota makes a longer running engine, but throwing out odometer readings is just silly.
      To highlight that. years ago I had a 2000 Silverado. With the job I had at the time I spent a LOT of time on the highway, though not nearly as much as the Tundra guys above. That truck didn't exhibit problems till it crossed 340,000 miles. After I quit that job I bought a 2012 Tacoma. My new job required very little travel. Mostly city driving. That Tacoma fell apart at 96,000 miles. That doesn't mean I think Chevy is better than Toyota. It means highway driving is better for a truck than city driving.

    • @facepalmdaily4404
      @facepalmdaily4404 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @snakecharmer2011 If you read to the bottom of my comment.... my most recent truck is a Tacoma. I'm just a realist. Toyota isn't what they used to be. They used to build vehicles and sell them to other manufacturers for them to rebrand. Now they do they opposite. Just look at the Supra recall. The Toyota Supra isn't even a Toyota. It's a BMW.
      And if the vehicle is driven nothing but stop-and-go city traffic with lots of idling, then Todd is right. Under crappy city conditions the truck stands almost zero chance of hitting 700k. Possible, but SUPER unlikely...... and again... I drive a Toyota.

    Just bought a 2019 Ford Ranger Lariat FX4. Love it! My best friend is a Tacoma guy and I test drove both and drove the Tacoma over and over again and just preferred the Ranger. My buddy and I came to the conclusion that they’re both very capable trucks and well engineered and that it really just comes down to preference. Personally I think a better comparison would’ve been the Ranger XLT to your Tacoma which comes with a full sized touch screen and both front and rear parking sensors. As for the tailgate... come on lol it’s a truck. Besides the Ranger’s tailgate is so incredibly light, I think having a dampener would be sorta pointless. Also, the Ranger you compared was the FX4 which is not only the 4x4 but Ford’s version of the TRD Off Road. It has all the trail controls as well as crawl control with upgraded suspension. Of course that’s going to increase the sticker price considerably. You can get the new Ranger XL Crew Cab for $25-28k. As far as resell, these trucks may share the same name as the Rangers that we all grew up with however, these are completely different trucks and it’ll be interesting to see how they do in the resell market here in the US. Personally, I don’t resell my vehicles. I keep them until they are dead lol. My vehicle before I bought my new truck, I had for over 13 years and it was my first car lol. Enjoy your new truck man 👍🏻

    Your discussion about the Nissan having the same engine and styling for 15 years is actually a very good thing for parts availability. However, build quality since merging with Renault, is poor. Fiat buying Chrysler, same thing. I drive a 2004 Lexus GX. Will easily go to 300K miles. If you’re going to buy a new/used vehicle to keep for a long time, Toyota is by far your best choice, bar none. (IMHO)

    Good video - thanks for sharing. I've been doing a lot of research for my first mid size truck (and any truck) and narrowed it down to the Tacoma and the Colorado. The Colorado feels more powerful and responsive, is easy to drive, and would probably be the most practical choice for me based on my needs ... BUT I just love the look of the Tacoma so much and didn't want the Army Green TRD Sport to be the one that got away so I just put down a deposit on one!

      Had a 2012 Tacoma Sport 4x4 crew cab long bed. It was cramp for a 6 foot tall guy like me. It rode and guzzled like a tank too. No power seats and navigation and it had rear drum brakes! It felt like a truck from the 70s. Driver seating was low to the floor, but i kinda liked it. Had a shimmy that wont go away after tires were changed(it wasnt the tires). It started doing 30mph at a 55mph zone costing me 1 grand plus to fix(600$ part for a freaking valve that looks like 50bucks). The dash started peeling off and the exterior paint was a joke. I kept it clean inside and out. The only thing i did like was it held its freaking value, it's unbelievable for such a lousy truck IMHO.

      @guy proulx would you buy GM products? No Dakota or Ranger either at the time. Frontier...no words to say lol. The Taco was a nice looking truck and it was the only choice I had. I needed a truck and i was willing to sacrifice comfort and a lot less options after driving a full size for a while. My Taco wasn't much better with mpg as was my full size so it was disappointing. It felt heavy and sluggish. It was an expensive truck even though it was outdated in everyway and hardly came with any standard equipment...no powerseat for a 30k plus vehicle and still sporting drums lol. I had the Sport and the next higher trim is the offroad and still didnt come with leather, power seats, navigation, and still drum brake.

My Taco was expensive and didnt come with bells and whistles unless they were cloaked or never notice it lol. Im not gonna seat here and say it's the best truck cause I'd be in denial just like the others. Maybe they never had other trucks or it's their first vehicle and have nothing to compare it to. It wasn't my first truck and im still driving another truck which I bought new, cash, thanks to the tacoma resale value.

    I ended up buying the 2019 Chevy Colorado Z71. I have over 8000 miles and the trucks been fine. My only thing I wish it had is push start, blind spot monitoring and a more comfortable from seat just a little wider would be nice. Its the price I paid for it and I like the look of the Chevy. I purchased the truck new in Aug of 2019 . The truck sticker was almost 43 grand at the time and I bought the truck for 10 thousand dollars off that price. I liked the Ford but I would have paid at least 6 to 7 thou more, same with Toyota. The price was right and sometimes you hear many people complain about a vehicle but not all are bad. There are many that run just fine, in any brand, you just don't hear about them because there are no issues.

The Tacoma is tops in reliability and has the best resale value of any car or truck sold in the U.S. I plan to keep it fro a long time, but if I change my mind and decide to sell it, or trade it in someday, it's nice to know it will still be worth something.

    I compared a ton of midsize trucks before I went with the Ranger Lariat Fx4. It has basically all the Tacoma TRD features, plus a nicer interior and better mpg and tow rating. The 10 speed is great, and the ecoboost puts out a ton of torque. Midsize trucks may not be king, but my god they're so much better to live with as a daily regardless of which brand you go with!

      Yes it is a 4x4! Dead serious do not know where my invoice is I was just looking for it last week but I was so busy I didn't have time to look hard. Big details are it's an SR5 double cab (obviously) it's the 4x4 v6, it has the towing package and the only ADDITIONAL dealer options were running boards (which I looked up and are about $500 for both separately) and all weather rubber floor mats. The sticker was $37,500 for it but they were offering it for $34700 I think because of memorial day? And since we couldn't agree on a price for my trade in we settled on $32k flat out. Then I sold my old car at CarMax for $9k and dumped that into the principal. Essentially getting this Tacoma for around $24k.

    Thumbs down for needlessly bashing the Frontier. Nissan isn't as strong as it use to be (before Renault) but the Frontier was always a solid, dependable, capable, simple little truck...and it isn't absurdly overpriced like every other truck, which is a major draw for a lot of buyers. That said, Nissan's build quality has definitely fallen since Renault took over and they've also had lots of corruption with execs (pretty sure Carlos Goshn is in jail), so I certainly wouldn't buy any Nissan at this point, but I still respect the frontier for its old school appeal and the value it represents in the overpriced truck segment. Also, no one pays anywhere near msrp for a Frontier. I owned a Pro4x crew cab until recently and I paid $5k below msrp when I bought it new.

    A well informed review. I'm interested in your opinion on the upcoming revision to the Tacoma. In a couple years, I understand Toyota will offer the Tacoma with a turbo 4-cylinder and hybrid motor combination. This should produce more horsepower, torque and better gas milage. However, it will be an all new and unproven powertrain -- first ever 4-cylinder and electric hybrid in a truck. On the other hand, Toyota has more than a decade of successful experience with hybrids. As an experienced truck owner, what's your opinion on that powertrain setup in a Tacoma? Understandably, you can't give a full review since no specifications are know about the hybrid at this point. We can only make assumptions that it SHOULD be better than what's currently available. I do like the V-6 but the better gas milage of the hybrid does have an allure. The big question is, will the hybrid be as reliable as the V-6? Will it be as easy to maintain? Hard to say right now. Whatever your thoughts are on the upcoming powertrain revision, I'm interested in your opinion.

    • @AlphaShark
      @AlphaShark  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If we base this on existing hybrid systems the only one that’s been around long term is Ford. And trucks from 2011-2012 with those turbo’d hybrids are already failing and having issues. Now that’s Ford though! No where near as reliable! BUT like you said it’s a new untested product, last time Tacoma did a new untested product we had the Tacoma frame rust issue on the 1st and 2nd gens! So I imagine there will be issues with the first model year if they do move towards a hybrid 4-cylinder on the Tacoma’s for the next generation. But I still think they will probably have superior reliability after the first couple model years to it’s competition as always.

    • @RedondoBeach2
      @RedondoBeach2 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AlphaShark I was also thinking that after the first couple years, any issues with the hybrid system should be fixed for a much more refined and reliable system. The difficult decision for me is; do I wait several more years and find odd and awkward ways of making my old hatchback with folding rear seats do the job of a truck, or just buy the 2021 Tacoma V6. I'll add that I'm not interested in the 4 door. I would much rather have the access cab with the V6 and SR5 or better trim level which seems to be difficult to find. What's your gut feeling on whether Tacoma's like yours and the one I just described will maintain high resale value or will drastically drop in value because of the anticipated hybrid systems?

    • @AlphaShark
      @AlphaShark  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RedondoBeach2 I don’t think they’re going to drop at all in price or value because of the hybrid system. Because we have to remember at the end of the day most guys like pick up trucks because they have gas engines they usually don’t like to take the leap to hybrid so I doubt that initially the resell value will drop. Also with California New Jersey and I believe Massachusetts now saying that they’re going to ban all gas vehicle sales by the year 2035 in favor of electric cars any vehicle with a gas engine will become highly valuable presumably skyrocketing the value of these Tacoma ‘s. I feel like my Tacoma will definitely hold it’s value and I definitely think the 2021 should as well especially since The 2020 model year fix the transmission issue where the transmission with hop gears randomly. I think it would be a safe bet to go with the current model Tacoma instead of waiting and I’m fairly confident you could find a higher trim access cab if you look hard enough I still do a little digging around here and they’re looking for trucks just to see what the prices are. And I’ve seen quite a few access cab TRD sport and SR5 models in my area.

    • @RedondoBeach2
      @RedondoBeach2 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AlphaShark Great points. You're convincing me to buy a 2021 TRD access cab, a truck I like a lot and one I believe I'll be happy with for the next 20 years. When I buy a vehicle, it's typically a long term commitment. I see vehicles as a depreciating liability, unlike real estate which is an appreciating asset. So, in order to get value from a vehicle, my intent is to keep it for many years longer than is typical. This is why reliability and cost of ownership (routine maintenance cost) is important to me and why the Tacoma in particular, is desirable. The longer I can keep a vehicle, the better value the vehicle has over time. My current daily driver is a 2004 Volkswagen GTI, 2.8L, V6 that I bought new while stationed in Germany. In 6 months, I will have owned it for 17 years. Since the car cost me ~$22,000 new, the annual cost is ~$1,294 on an annualized basis + ~$300 in annual maintenance costs, totaling ~$1,594 annually, or ~$132 a month. Dirt cheap and only getting cheaper every year I continue to own it and not have another car. If you extrapolate the cost of your truck over time, I'm sure you'll find that it will also be dirt cheap to own. If you make another Tacoma video, I encourage you to discuss the cost of ownership similar to the way I explained or in a way you prefer. I say this because when I talk to people, especially younger people, they seem most concerned about whether they can afford the monthly payment. I believe they think this way because car salesmen convince them to have that mindset. A mindset that is not in the best interest of consumers. Thinking that way only results in higher turnover of vehicles and bigger sales numbers for dealerships over time. Sorry for the long rant but I definitely appreciate your perspective on the Tacoma. I will shop for a 2021 roughy around the Nov - Dec time frame.

    People always rip into the Taco for what it doesn’t have. I am actually not sure what these people are looking for. Especially for a more “work-related” trim. In my mind, “does it to what you NEED, SAFELY and RELIABLY?” The higher trim Tacos can be pricy, but you are not forced to by a TRD Pro. Also, quality components are exponentially more expensive. I would most likely still have it to this day had an elderly gentleman not suddenly turned his classic 1968 Pontiac GTO left and in direct line with my truck. I had less than 10’ to react and thanks to the tough frame of the truck I hit the classic pointed nose of the GTO and actually drove over it! Nice video, I also bought mid-size in 2019, shared your opinion on the Frontier (which I didn't bother to even test drive). The suspension on the Ranger was a disqualifier for me as it felt like you were being tossed around the cab even with regular highway driving. My decision came down to a Tacoma TRD Sport or Colorado z71 (as I couldn't justify the twin, yet more expensive Canyon). While I found both the Colorado and Tacoma very sharp looking, I went with the Colorado for the towing capacity (and overall peppier v6) and more comfortable driving position (I'm fairly tall) as well as IMO a smoother suspension and ride quality.
    If I was doing a bit more off road use, that might have swayed me toward the Taco (or a more expensive zr2 Colorado), and to be fair, I don't think you could go wrong either way. Good work on the video!

    One massive drawback to Tacos are they suck for tall guys. I think the threshold is maybe 6'0 at the tallest, will be okay. But with the shallow floor and low roofline, it sucks viewing the road out of the top portion of the windshield in the tinting all the time. No leg room. And the seats tend to be very hard and not good for long trips.

    I am glad you like your truck. Mid size is the right size and all most ppl will ever need.
    I shall now state the reasons why I didn't get a Tacoma back in 18' and instead went with the Colorado Z71. I was looking at both and still like both.
    1) When buying new I was able to get a LOADED Z71 for $32.5 out the door. Which was way cheaper than the Tacoma.
    2) I drive the distance/commute/tow a small RV all over the country and comfort is important. The interior space and seating comfort is many order of magnitudes better than the Tacoma.
    3) I saw some reviewers putting 800lb water containers into the beds of both trucks and the Colorado destroyed the test. It is rated the same as the Tacoma but did better than even most of the full size trucks under the same test.
    4) The Colorado has a boxed/super stiff frame and EVERY gen of Tacoma has had rust problems.
    5) Rear disc brakes that will cool much faster when towing and perform much better when under load.
    6) A rear locker standard with the towing package.
    7) More horse power and torque coming out of an engine with LOTS of diesel longevity tech in it. Things like piston jug oil sprayers, extra wide crankshaft journal bearings, roller rockers, oversized came sprockets to decrease timing chain wear, hypereutectic pistons, etc, etc.
    8) An 8speed automatic vs 6 spd. This gives the vehicle smaller jumps between gears when towing and decreases wear significantly. As well as give a great low 1st gear ratio for when towing. The Colorado has almost 2x the torque in first gear.
    9) Crawl ratio in the Colorado is 45:1 vs 36:1 in the Tacoma.
    10) The transfer case in the Colorado is leaps and bounds better than the Tacoma. It has an Auto mode which unlocks the front/rear tires from each other. So you can still make tight turns on dry patches of pavement without binding the drivetrain. Which means the 4WD system is 10X more usable in my area.
    11) The Colorado is now #3 "Most Made in America" vehicle out of ALL vehicles currently sold in the U.S. Half of the Tacomas are built in Mexico, and soon they all will be apparently.
    12) The Colorado had Apply Carplay and the Tacoma didn't.
    13) The Colorado has a super open engine bay for easier preventative maintenance down the road. Things like an electric fan and gas hood struts really open things up. Toyota cheaped out on those things too.
    14) GM products are always SUPER easy to work on compared to Toyota. Toyota literally designs their products to be hard to work on. For instance when the new model Tacoma came out... they had a problem with 3rd brake light seals leaking on some. You have to remove the ENTIRE CABIN CEILING, curtain airbags, etc. to fix it. This is not the first time I have seen designed craziness from Toyota.
    15) Toyota Tacoma has THE BEST resale out of all vehicles in the U.S. Chevy Colorado is #8. Still dang amazing... especially since I got $6k off of the sticker at purchase.
    16) I have two kids that are growing quickly that will be sitting in the back on long trips. The Colorado is a lot more comfortable. The wifi and Dual USB charging ports in the rear has been amazing in there too.
    17) Did I mention that the Colorado tows massively better than the Tacoma? Well... It does on many levels. The Tacoma would still work though for most things. Just not as well.
    I have had several Toyotas and Chevy trucks. Both will last and last if you take care of them. I usually sell all my vehicles at around the 200k to 350k mile mark. At that point you have to almost give either one away. I would feel guilty for selling them for too much at that point anyways.
    I may keep this one much longer though. I like it too much. It is now my all-time favorite. I just have to keep the rust off. Which is why in my area there are a LOT of old GM and Ford trucks and no Toyotas. I don't even get hardly any snow here either in Elizabeth City, NC.

I honestly couldn't see myself in any other truck. I hope your Colorado lasts you a long term and serves you well. With my trade-in, I got my Taco pretty loaded for $25k which was exactly where I wanted to be. I think it depends on the dealer and the time you get the truck for the price.

      It may have been my longest post ever too! lol
      I am glad you are loving your truck. Any truck will last so long as you take care of it, don't wreck it, and keep the rust off.
      My last 4 trucks were all GM and they all had a minimum of 223k miles when sold. This new Colorado is many order of magnitude higher quality though. Should do even better.
      With me towing so much I am sure I will wear on it a LOT more. However, I am confident enough with tools to slap a new transmission in there in a day some day if I have to. I am considering installing one of the two Nitro Gear offerings for the diffs. It would take the strain off of the entire drive train. As well as increase fuel economy around town or when towing.
      I hear the Tacoma really benefit from a re-gear more than the other trucks.

      @@AlphaShark Your video was very helpful. I've been doing my research regarding mid-size trucks, and most of the facts and data lead me to the Tacoma as the most sensible choice for quality, and, for my requirements, function.
      I'm a real estate agent, so I have the curious combination of needing to ferry around my buyer clients in relative comfort and luxury, while having a pick up bed to transport furniture when I'm staging a house for my seller clients. But I also live in big city and do condo showings - so a large, full size truck isn't practical.
      One of the higher end Tacoma's with leather interior (TRD Pro) will likely be my choice. It's sufficiently luxurious when I have clients with me, setting a professional and business-like environment within the cabin. I would also much prefer manual shifting, so that pretty leaves only the TRD Pro at the high end, anyway.
      Again, thank you for your detailed and thoughtful review. It's great to see videos that are thoroughly researched based on fact, rather than hype. Well done.
