    I didn't expect Allen Strange to like that at all.
    Great video and explanations.

    "As always, rerpurposing technology for artistic expression is one of the most humane activities the we can engage in" Wow! That is such an insightful line, it could be the first line in a book. Fantastic. Great vid as always.
    One thing i was doing in hardware and now i'm inspired to do in either VCV Rack or (more likely) Reaktor was building neuron circuits with VCAs for weighting and different non linearities post mixer.
    Yeah, repurposing technology...so much fun and adventure to be had.

      Thanks! I appreciate it. It's really what it's all about, using technology to humanize rather than dehumanize (which can be a trap we forget to avoid). Make some fun neuron-based music!

    Thanks for sharing your knowledge Simon, utterly fascinating and so much more interesting to listen to and explore (to me at least anyway!) All the best.

      Glad you enjoyed it! It's always good to hear from others who are interested in these topics!

    Great stuff. Finally i know what this module is capable of. BTW, If you push the Trig Button on the Scope you can freeze the Waveform so it's easier to look what's happening.

      Great tip! Thanks. I gotta bring up my VCV Rack chops.

    Do you know Dr. Ben Smith at all? He was one of my professors in college and he made a whole machine learning library for Max. Really cool someone's using Pd for the same concept!

      Very cool. I've never met Dr. Smith, but I know his Max library. I'm not trying to do anything nearly as sophisticated as that! I'm just stealing ideas from contemporary technology and misusing them for artistic expression.

    Awesome video! Waiting to see the next one. But isn’t Strange referring to the (mal)practice of patching outputs to outputs and calling it non-linear mixing there? 😂

    • @SimonHutchinson
      @SimonHutchinson  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's fair that, in that chapter, Strange gives the example of patching outputs to outputs, but I believe the quote I share at the end here is still relevant! Page 175 of the original edition: "With a non-linear device, the flow of current...is variable, since equal voltage changes result in different current changes...The composer's concern for non-linear mixers is that it introduces additional frequencies into the final output which were not present at one of the inputs." All this holds true, but you're correct that then he goes into more specifics about outputs to outputs!

    Neuron is hands down one of my fave VCV Rack modules. 🧠)))

      Mine too! I need to use it more. I get caught up in my habits sometimes, and it's certainly one that breaks you out of them!

      @@SimonHutchinson I actually prefer the single Neuron to the double decker one you show in the video. And the GENIE is another sort of animal entirely…
