  • During the Tudor period, there was one King who's reign was considered a great shame. King Edward VI was the son that Henry VIII wished so much for, and he was seen as the great hope for the Tudor dynasty, and it was hoped he would reign for a long time. But this was not the case, as Edward VI died at just the age of 15 and his death was seen across England as a tragic thing. Edward was seen as a rather sickly child, and throughout his short life he became ill a number of times. He was known to have contracted smallpox, but he did recover but some bouts of his poor health led doctors to believe that Edward would pass away.
    In 1553, the King's health went downhill rapidly, and Edward VI was seen as gravely ill. He began to make arrangements for his successor and disinherited his half sisters Mary and Elizabeth, and named Lady Jane Grey as his successor. But Edward wasted away very quickly and it's believed that he died from TB or tuberculosis. This was a common disease in Tudor England, and at the time it attacked the young King's lungs and he was known for being very ill. In his final days, he was coughing up blood and was covered in sores and scabs. However despite his short reign, he had changed England forever with regards to religious reform. But Edward's death was incredibly painful and tragic, and his reign was seen as a short and wasteful one. It was believed that he would reign for decades, but at just 15 Edward VI passed away.
    So join us today as we look at, 'The PAINFUL Death Of King Edward VI Of England - The Boy Tudor King.' Remember to support our channel, please make sure to subscribe.

    The later Tudor Monarchs had a big influence on affairs here in Ireland.
    This detailed account of the myriad diseases and illnesses, inherited and contracted, that plagued this young man and sent him to an early grave should make us appreciate modern medicine all the more.

    It sounded like he had tuberculosis but by the time his hair was falling out and his nails were falling off that sounds like poisoning. It could be that Edward did get very ill and possibly with pneumonia throwing up yellow green stuff, and then blood. It's very possible that during that time or shortly thereafter he was being poisoned. Certain kind of poisons do make your hair fall out and your nails. Either which way it's horribly sad because he was so young.. he was going to name his sister Elizabeth as his successor because she was Protestant but he said that Elizabeth would never take the throne in front of Mary.. therefore, Edward marked out Mary and Elizabeth's name from his father's will and the actual law that was signed by Henry the 8th and his counsel before Henry's death.. Edward didn't have the authority to change that will by himself or even with Dudley's approval. That's another reason why Mary was able to get such support when she came to take the throne and remove the Lady Jane Gray.. it wasn't Jane's fault because she was used as a pawn. That's why Mary didn't harm her but just imprisoned her and her husband. Mary warned her father John Grey that if he acted out again that he and his daughter and son-in-law would be put to death. He did uprise against Mary again and sure enough he was executed a month or so after Dudley had been and then right after that his daughter, Jane the nine day Queen of England, and her husband were both executed..

      @pogo9876 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's tons of first hand information, written by members of the English court in regards to Edward VI's final illness. It's highly doubtful he was deliberately poisoned. If there was even a hint of suspicion of him being poisoned, someone would have wrote about it. They knew enough about the symptoms and tell tale signs to all types of poisons, and no one suspected that what had happened to the young king fit the profile of a poisoning. However, it is important to keep in mind that a lot of the "medicines" back then were not only (much of the time) counterproductive and dangerous- BUT lethal. I'm sure some the medicine administered to him definitely hastened his death.

    As about the food given to him when he was sick for 10 days, it is believed the practice is already popular in China before England did it.
    The broth is believed to be able clean the intestine, thus after the medication, the intestine would be able process all nutrients properly and no single drop will be wasted.
    Usually, the patient will be banned to eat meat for a year after that, but as far as I know there is no record stating what he got after recovery.

    • @pogo9876
      @pogo9876 2 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      You wrote, "He was much kinder and soft (sic) than his father". His father, Henry VIII , didn't start his reign as a cruel and nasty ruler. As a matter of fact, he was kindly and was very much loved and respected by the English people. They gave him the moniker "Good king Harry". As Henry grew older, he became a tyrant. But before that, he had many good years. You kinda can't compare a 36 year reign of a 55 year old king to a 5 year reign of a 15 year old boy. I'm sure with time, Edward would have been just as brutal as his father. If you read what he wrote about the Catholics in England, you'd see Edward was a religious zealot in the making.
