    I have an OM-1 as well and it's one of my favorite cameras, film or digital. Built like a tank and, as you noted, the image quality is amazing. My light meter doesn't work, but I don't really care. I use Sunny 16 as well as a light meter app on my phone. I'm very happy with the results. I sometimes lust after a Leica, but with this and my Nikon FM2, I just don't see the need. I will never get rid of mine. Great review!

    Thanks Ted for another great video. When I viewed this one I almost wept. My first ‘proper camera’ that I bought in 1979 was an OM 1n with a 50mm f1.4, over the years I built up a comprehensive set of lenses. When digital came along I trade in all my old film gear and regretted it ever since. Now I shoot Fuji because it has the same form and tactile feel as my old OM.

    Hi Ted, late to the party here, but I enjoy your videos a lot. Great presentation. Just a quick word to you or others watching this, I have been shooting these cameras since 1982 and all three of mine have needed work, mostly to replace deteriorating prism foam. I also had them re-calibrated for modern batteries, but wish I had not, they are not as stable. I still love these little cameras, and the lenses. The lenses are a bit fragile mechanically. Lastly, one fellow who repaired mine strongly warned against using any kind of soft release button, it stresses one of the parts in the shutter and he won't warranty repairs if one is used. Enjoy your OM-1!

    • @TedVieira
      @TedVieira  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jon, thanks for your input, man. I haven't had mine modified for newer batteries so I really appreciate your advise on that. Actually, most of the time I'm using sunny 16 with this camera anyway. I've replaced the light seals around the film door, but that's really all it's needed. That's too bad about the soft release button issue. Someone else had mentioned that too. It makes the camera handle better for me, but I don't want to cause eventual damage. Thanks man!

    Hi Ted. I remember, with great fondness, shooting with both the OM-1 and OM-2 back in the early 80s. They were, for my money, the best cameras around at that time, used my the likes of Bailey and Litchfield. I never truly rediscovered my love of photography until I adopted the Fuji system a few years ago. Currently using the X-Pro 1, XT-1 and XT-2. Love your channel, All the best, Ted.

    Well done Ted. The OM-1 is one of the few remaining SLRs I want to shoot.

      Yeah man, amazing camera. I love that it's fully manual, and that Zuiko glass! Great stuff.

  • @qnetx
    @qnetx 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Congratulations on your purchase. Last year I picked up a used Zuiko 28mm to use on my Fuji cameras and was impressed by how sharp it is. Then I saw an OM-2 camera for a decent price and started using it. Although I also like pure mechanical cameras and the OM-2 requires batteries, I still picked it up since I could use the low cost LR-44 batteries I use in several of my other film cameras. I really like the build quality and the small size of the Olympus OM cameras and love the large viewfinder. I've since picked up a few more Zuiko lenses for very low prices and they are all superb. I recently found another OM-2 in black for less than $100 and bought that as a spare. I also enjoy using the lenses on the Fuji X-T2 and X-Pro1 especially because of the small physical dimensions.

    • @TedVieira
      @TedVieira  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh man, that's cool you're using these lenses on the Fuji bodies as well. I'll have to give that a try. Yeah, the build quality of these cameras is fantastic.

  • @tuisitala9068

    Hey Ted................ Am I not surprised that you love this OM1. I 'get' everything you have said over the past couple of years and recently I have gone wild on the OM1 (and OM2). They fit me perfectly. I love the style coupled with the gorgeous build quality. They ooze class and you just want to hold them. I thought that you were missing a trick by not mentioning these having seen how you love the M6. By the way your purchase at $180 looks a steal for this mint example - I have not seen one that good.
    Keep the videos flowing - they are a little piece of Vegas sunshine.

    Hi Ted
    Great video and a great trip down memory lane..I used to own the OM1 and it lasted me for a very long time. Built like a tank and to a very high spec.
    Back in the day it was, with its stable mate the OM2 , classed as a pro camera but still within the reach of semi pros or amateur photographers.
    Looking at your vid I don't know if you know but the OM1 can have its focusing screen changed because within the OM range are a set of different screens to choose from.
    Just to share with some boring stats, throughout its life the camera became a bit of a legend due to its toughness and razor sharp lenses. It was used by NASA to record Apollo
    rocket launches and were placed very near the launch towers. With the tremendous noise and heat you would think the cameras would break down but not the OM1s, they just kept on taking the pictures. Chris Bonington the famous British mountaineer took two with him when he conquered mount Everest and reported back to Olympus saying although they got knocked about the cameras just kept on working. So. as you already know, you've got yourself a little gem there.
    Great video as usual Ted and look forward to watching more.

    Hi Ted welcome back. The OM 1 is a jewel however there can be issues with the match needle metering which those considering purchasing should be aware. Similar cameras are the lovely Pentax MX and of course the Nikon FM.

    • @TedVieira
      @TedVieira  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Mike, thanks man. Yeah, I know with any cameras this old there can be meter issues. I've got an old Pentax Spotmatic, light meter is gone so I just use sunny16 with that one.

    Enjoyed the video, and photos, Ted. Back in the day the OM-1 and 2 were wicked little cameras and had better glass than their big brother counterparts. Under appreciated. They took the Leica approach and went small and simple while the other guys were getting bloated.

    Hey Ted. I have been shooting with a fuji xt2 for the past couple of years and really want to try film out. I discovered my Dad has an old OM 1 with the 50 1.8. I am super excited to try it out. Even more so that I see how lovely the image quality is. Not sure what film to try first. Thanks a ton for making these film videos. You are really inspiring. I hope film starts to make a comeback. I really love the look of the images with film.

      @TedVieira  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey man, wow, that's very cool about your dad's OM-1 with the 50 1.8. That's the exact kit that I have. Great combination, man. Yeah, film sales are reported to be higher each year. Fujifilm just announced that it's bringing out a new film this fall, ACROS II. Very cool that we'll have that film to shoot again, but it's even cooler that a company like fuji is starting to make new film. Kind of an important statement on their part. Cool stuff!

    Lovely camera Ted. I still have one of these myself and use it quite often. Mine is actually the OM-1n and is the all black body but identical in every other respect. I use it with the optional motor-drive and it has given me years of trouble-free, fun shooting. I now use Nikon DSLRs as well as a Fuji X-Pro2 and X-T2 but still have a lot of film cameras and, as I say, get a lot of fun from using them. Ted, I loved this video but then, I always love your stuff.

  • @beebot
    @beebot 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice images Ted - I hope you use it often.
    I use the MR9 battery adapter to use SR44's. To be honest, I prefer the feel and operation of the OM-1n/OM-2n and OM-4ti to my Leica M6 frequently. It has to be mentioned that together (for all of the OM bodies) they cost me less than 1/100th of the price of the M6 body. I could spend more on lenses.
    Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy the M6, but the prices these days are just crazy for 35mm cameras. I'd rather pay for a clunker OM and send it for CLA (around $200 for a complete rebuild) than risk getting a naff M6.
    The Zuiko glass is top shelf stuff (especially the later multicoated designs). The 28mm 2.8 is fantastic, as are the 35mm f2.8, the 50 f1.2 and the 100mm f/2 (my preferred setup). The 50mm 1.8 is one of the best "nifty-fifties" around.
    The OM-1n is a reliable workhorse camera. With good mirror foam, it's also quiet (for an SLR). A favourite camera of many photographers for good reason.

    • @TedVieira
      @TedVieira  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The OM1 blew me away with that glass. Was not expecting that. Cost me less than $200 for the lens and body. Such a great way to go.

    The OM-1 is a very lovely and mechanically elegant camera. I started as a Minolta guy in the 80s, then moved mostly to Nikon in the mid 2000s, but have quite recently learned to appreciate the entire OM range. One thing to be aware of, as I've heard and read on several sites and videos, is to be very careful when using soft release on any of the earlier OM cameras. Supposedly, although I still prefer to use them myself, they can somehow damage the shutter actuator inside the body.

    • @TedVieira
      @TedVieira  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, fantastic camera and lens. I hadn't heard that about using the soft release, but good to know. I'll probably still use one, I love the feel it gives to a camera. Thanks man.

    • @clintonr9804
      @clintonr9804 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem with "soft" release buttons is that they increase the chances that the release button will be impacted, damaging the mechanism inside, and the parts are long gone -- the only source for replacements are donor bodies.

    I stringed for UPI in Beirut back in the early eighties when I wasn't playing Navy Corpsman 2nd Marines, 24 MAU. 3 OM-1md bodies with winders, a 28, 50 and 180. What a kit that was a lot smaller than the Nikon F2 issued. I also had a Tamron 300 f2.8. I still have that gear today!

  • @pauljenkin297
    @pauljenkin297 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Ted, that is a stunning example. The silver-nose 50mm f1.8 is a beautiful lens. Some say it's a little lower contrast than the more modern heavier coated versions but Zuiko lenses are little gems. I used to shoot weddings with an OM1 and OM2 back in the late 70s / early 80s. I still have an OM2n and an OM3. The Zuiko lenses also work great on my Fuji digital bodies. If you can find a good 85mm f2, just try it for portraits. Love your beautiful photos and the rig you have is only a fraction larger and heavier than an M6 with a 'Cron 50.

    I inherited one from my father but overlooked it because I mainly shoot medium format film, ie: Pentax 6x7 or the Fuji 6x9's, Mamiya 645 Pro, Mamiya TLR C330, etc. but WoW! The OM-1 is like a jewel and the Zuiko lenses are pure gold. I love your images of the old cars and for a 35mm the price/performance is off the charts. Shoot film, develop at home and its easier than frying an egg.

      Battery door stuck? First, remove the four screws holding the bottom cover, and remove the bottom cover -- nothing loose inside, except perhaps the battery. (If worse comes to worse, that's one way to replace the battery, but a little inconvenient!) If the battery is corroded or swollen, this may relieve pressure on the battery cover, allowing it to be removed. If not, you can grab both the inside and the outside of the battery cover between a thumb and finger and try twisting it that way. It's a long shot, but worth a try.
      If the "slot" in the battery door is mangled so much that you can't get a coin to grip, you can try using a small cutting wheel in a Dremel-type motor tool to slightly widen the slot and square the edges, though this may be somewhat unsightly. If a heavy coin still won't work, try using a wide bladed straight screwdriver.

    Hey Ted I really enjoy your videos...I am a recent convert to the Fuji cameras-love the external controls. My first camera was the Om-1 way back in the 70’s and I still have it! You are inspiring me to pull it out and do some film again...do you process your own or what lab do you use? Looks great!

    • @TedVieira
      @TedVieira  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kathleen! Yeah, I love that Fuji went with putting the exposure controls back on the outside of their X series bodies. Such a great aspect of photography that kind of got lost when everything went digital. You should definitely pull out your OM-1 again. That's so cool it was your first camera! Yeah, I develop my own film then scan the negatives. Thanks so much, Kathleen!

    Olympus lenses were excellent! I had an OM II, and this lighmeter... It worked DURING the exposure too, so - on automatic mode - it corrected the exposure and reacted on changing light situations. As I know, Olympus was (maybe still is) the only company who had this in their cameras. An yes, especially on long exposures, it worked perfect!

    Great video :) I have been collecting analog cameras (nothing expensive) for about two years now and have among other things an OM-1 and two OM-2's. With the OM-1 I was lucky to buy it together with the 50mm / 1.4 for only 80 Euro. It is not in such a good condition as yours, but it still looks very good. Now I just have to test it with film and hope that everything is still sealed. It would be great if you could make a video one day showing how you digitize the analog photos. Do you digitize the negatives or the prints? All the best from Switzerland. Stay healthy!

    • @TedVieira
      @TedVieira  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Tim, you are quite welcome and thanks very much, man. Yeah, I couldn't recommend this camera enough. I develop my own black and white film then scan the negatives. I'm too impatient to wait to send the photos to a lab then wait to get them back. Black and white film is pretty easy to develop, just watch enough youtube videos and you'll do fine. I haven't done color, but it doesn't seem to be much more involved, you just have to be more exact with things and have less room to play around.

      Hi Igor, yeah, I develop my own film. I haven't used any labs but a couple that I consistently hear good things about are www.richardphotolab.com/ and thedarkroom.com/ - if I shot color film I'd probably use one of those... until I learned to develop color myself ;)

    You can use regular LR44 1.5v batteries as well, but i recomment underexposing 1 step, because the extra voltage makes the meter over sensitive. Olympus pioneered making really small slr's. Not before 1976 did Pentax take up the gauntlet and produced a similar size camera, the MX. But the OM1 and OM2 were ergonomically better with the shutter speed ring. The thing that came closest as a small intiuitive design id say was the Pentax ME super. To me the OM4 is the greatest small 35mm film SLR ever made.

      Hey, sorry for the delay, just getting caught up on things. No, for about the past four years I've used an Epson V600. I've been really happy with it but recently a friend of mine gave me a V700 and it's made scanning life a little better. Scans more film per session and the dust removal feature is pretty amazing.

    Okay I can't be the only one but what is sunny 16

    • @TedVieira
      @TedVieira  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Barry, very sorry for the delay, man. Yeah, the sunny 16 rule is a method you can use to evaluate your exposure without using a light meter. This is a very cool thing to learn and use. I've got a few cameras that don't have built in meters and I've become really used to just determine my exposure on my own without using a meter.
      I could explain it here but might get a little wordy and not as clear seeing a video on that subject. Travis Mortz (Foresthillsfilmlab here on youtube) has put out a good video that explains sunny 16 - th-cam.com/video/bCbePKkivZ8/w-d-xo.html this should help.

    I owned Olympus cameras since before arrival of digital photography and used it professionally from time to time. Currently I own only OM2sp with 5 lenses; thought to get OM3 but it's a bit too much money what people are charging for it, so I guess I'll maybe get too an OM1 in mint condition instead. If you think that OM 50mm f/1,8 is not good enough, don't bother - I do have 50/1,4, and that aperture of f/1,4 might be useful only if you shoot in the dark with grainy high speed film, say Kodak P3200. For everything else, you'll have to stop it down to at least f/2 to get descent resolution and sharpness. Here in SE Europe those batteries are impossible to find (except online of course), but we have cool mechanic dudes that can convert those cameras to use 1,5 volt batteries. Try to find one in your area, it's an easy fix.
    Hope this helps a bit.
