    The glass bridge didn't blow up as an exciting finale, that bridge was primed to blow as soon as the timer reached zero. If anyone didn't make it across, boom, they dead.

    Also, yes, James - the glass hurting Sae-Byoek was unfair and violated the ideology. That's the point - to show that the promise of meritocracy by those who make the players play the game is a lie.

  • @kareningram6093
    @kareningram6093 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    Yep, you called it even further back than episode 7. I don't remember which episode it was, but it was the scene where the detective was looking through the files to find his brother and discovered that he'd won the Squid Game several years prior. Also, the mural depicting all of the games was always there, but it was covered up by the many, many bunk beds, only to be slowly revealed over time as more and more people died. A very cool little detail that I paid attention to upon rewatching.

    • @KayBeeLPKarsten
      @KayBeeLPKarsten ปีที่แล้ว

      4:10 Yeah, what had me wondering about that... The CHARACTERS would have been able to see the not-exactly-small pictograms on the wall literally showing all six games that will be played (maybe even in order?)... Like really? No one saw that there are substantially big, black pictograms on a white wall? Bunk beds wouldn't cover them entirely. They did for the camera mostly, admittedly, but through the characters' eyes someone would have spotted it, I think.

    "You guys are both right."
    Something a lot of people seem to fail to grasp, that there is no clear right/wrong choices. It's possible for two people to have differing opinions on an issue without one of them being in the wrong. Gi-hun was a man clinging to his humanity, trying to not let the game strip him of everything he had left. Sang-woo was a man who basically approached the game as "Look, we agreed to do this, knowing this shit is fucked up, so I'm going to commit to it because this is the way these bastards have stacked the deck against us." Neither are wrong. It's just their individual ways of surviving.

    The Frontman wasn't saying the games themselves are fair, just that they don't want any competitor to have (what they deem as) an unfair advantage over anyone else. You could argue they would not have turned the lights down on the Bridge without the VIPs being there (as it was boring).

Yes you’re odds are lower of winning, but at least you wouldn’t have to straight up murder, also I don’t mind lower odds because I don’t care if I die lol. Another clue that you can kinda guess that he’s his brother is the fact that the Front Man knows a lot about police operations. His comment about the bullets and also how good he is at noticing things, this could imply that he used to be a police officer/detective himself or he has someone close to him that he’s learned all this information from. Imagine if my theory was true and the detective actually joined the police force to follow his brother’s footsteps and then later found out the brother he looks up to is this guy who’s hosting this fucked up game, it’s very heartbreaking really.

    I agree the glass from explosion hurting her so bad violated the integrity of the game, and so did not feel like something they'd really allow, but instead was contrived to give them a way to narrow players to 2. And it was pretty obvious the black masked guy was going to be the brother by process of elimination. You knew the brother would be important and would turn up, and they had not revealed who black mask guy was, so it seemed probable they'd be the same person.

    • @caralayne503
      @caralayne503 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a good synopsis. Had they really had to have 3 of them, it would’ve been nuts.. it was an easy solution letting sang woo kill her off instead of them fixing her. I hated that they didn’t want to help her, it was honourable making it as far as she did, if she had a chance.

    • @mymyersfamily
      @mymyersfamily 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@caralayne503 The thing is, the writers wanted to both narrow down the players but also give the MC a motivation to want to kill his former friend. Also, since it was obvious she was going to die anyway, I think it may be useful also in confusing the emotions of the audience because we don't know whether to be extra-angry at the former friend for murdering the girl who was defenseless, or less angry because effectively she was dead anyway and he was just putting her out of her misery.
      That said, this is where great writing emerges, when you don't settle for a contrived plot device that accomplishes what you want, but you search till you find a NON-contrived plot device that will accomplish the same thing. For example, after the three of them survived the bridge, with NO explosion/injury, send them to dinner and after dinner, show footage of a player skulking through the air vents and announce that one of the remaining players violated the rules and as a penalty the food for that player was poisoned. Then we go back to the night scene where they each have a knife, but this time the girl is in agony from the poison not the glass shard. And we don't know if the poison is meant to kill or just cause pain and then abate, so we are still left confused when she's stabbed by the MC's former friend.
      I'm not saying that's the best way to write it, but it just shows there are other ways to reach the same result without lazily saying, "what if when they blow the bridge for effect, one of the shards mortally wounds her?" which should have caused the other writers in the room to all protest and say, "No, that violates the integrity that we've already established is paramount!" But it may have been late in the day, they were tired, and they just shrugged and said, "let's go with that." Anyway, it was a fun series, but it had a a few of these "weak" moments in the story/plot that could have been readily fixed with just a bit more effort. I really don't understand how scripts get into production without such basic stuff being caught and addressed, but it happens in the biggest blockbuster movies, too, and it's a head scratcher.

    • @caralayne503
      @caralayne503 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mymyersfamily agreed. And believe me, I worked in the industry for a celeb whom produced/edited film. I was always on a film set.
      I got used to hearing how to sway an audience, fool them, get them semi-interactive, & it’s a much bigger process than known, unless you have someone like a Tarantino, who’s visions have been done remarkably well mentally, with all of these things taken into consideration as he writes his scripts. That’s a lot of talent!
      For this, I think they did an above & beyond job on a whole. The fact they never saw the global acceptance & appreciation for this series is where the holes you pointed out were made. It wasn’t made like most blockbuster’s we now know as the norm. The only hype they had was word of mouth (well, the internet lol). So, I think the series did incredibly well, also considering the average American does not watch foreign films at the level this was seen. Rarely. They weren’t necessarily messy with the loopholes, but I think had it been made with global attention like it had, thing’s may have been a little tighter during the making of….
      The only part that bothered me was her death, & while I do agree with your reasoning as to why, & that she wasn’t going to make it, the fact the game did actually have rules & were supposedly “fair” I don’t know why I, or the rest of the audience, went nuts with Sang Woo. But you’re right, they needed Hun to be past his point of no return. Sang woo already was after the first game, as he voted to keep it going. He had killer written all over him with how badly he messed up in real life. A desperate broken man, willing to do anything to recoup his life. Hun was getting there & close, but had he not seen Sang Woo did what he did, he wouldn’t have been a 100% killer.
      BTW, we sound like Siskel & Ebert here!

I actually said it out loud during the first(?) episode:P. It's just such a trope, and as the episodes went on it just seemed to keep inching towards proving it..
