I can't imagine all of the people who saw this on television when it aired and didn't realize that they were looking at two of the greatest musicians of their time...
l would have, and l'm prog lovin girl! Saw these guys about 5x with their different groups. l didn't catch this on "Tee Vee'' cuz _they_ decide what you watch. :P Thank God for YT!!
@@theresa42213 Wow, you must've been the rare 1% they were talking about! I wish I could've seen them live. I'm 26 now and only discovered prog a couple years ago :/
Saw Bruford Starless King Crimson tour, then with Genesis, UK, Bruford with Alan Holdsworth, Bruford Gradually Going Tornado tour, Yes Union tour twice, and King Crimson Thrak tour. Too much is not enough, happy retirment Bill and thanks for the extraordinary ride!.
I saw this when it was first broadcast and still have my copy on VHS, very cool Bill Bruford TV hosting appearance, he introduced his new band Earthworks here, just before their first album was released.
I saw Bill Bruford and Earthworks in a bar 4 months after this aired and he still didn't know if he was in King Crimson or not. He got sort of agitated when I asked him about it ... And about six years later, with both of these guys there, King Crimson was reborn as the mighty Double Trio.
Love this. Had the pleasure of both seeing this Earthworks tour here in Edinburgh, and also a brief chat with Bill in the bar afterwards. Absolute gentleman, and a memorable gig.
Great interview! Thanks for uploading! The Earthworks stuff is cool too. I've had the first album since it was released. I have a couple of others too, but I need to catch up. Some much amazing stuff out there if you do some digging!
Boys! l'm a _chick_ who not only LOVES prog..but has seen all your bands too. Yes, Gabriel, Crimson, Earthworks, and l just love you Bill! You're an impeccable drummer! A Class act! ....and you're cute! Too bad we lost Keith and Greg this year huh?
this album was just released, and i saw them perform at The Birchmere in Northern Va. I arrived with my girl, and I know I drove her home...but they were excellent.
I love these guys! Hey Fripp, learn to communicate! Bruford's influence on Earthworks is interesting. It's a bit tighter and focused than most jazz bands. More structure with interesting soundscapes. I like it.
What year did this air? Did Bruford host this show on a weekly basis? If I hadn't seen this clip I don't know if I would've believed that Bill Bruford hosted a show on VH1, where he would talk to Tony Levin and perform with Earthworks! In the small town that I grew up in, we didn't get VH1 until maybe 1985 or 1986. We got MTV at the same time so I mostly watched it.
Guess what Bill did after he retired from his incomparable, innovative and totally successful career of over 40 years? Completed a PhD and entered the global lecture circuit. The ultimate career path.
Do you have the clip of Bruford interviewing David Torn, also from New Visions? As I recall Bruford interviewed him, then Torn did a solo guitar piece.
First of all, Jazz IS the Blues. That's the heart and spiritual center of Jazz music, PERIOD. Yes, of course it evolves and should include many disparate influences, BUT, the MUSIC/Compositions still have to be GOOD!!! If you're going to write a record filled with compositions that has nothing to do with the center of jazz which is the blues, and not just the blues itself but traditional bebop language, and incorporate electronic drums, you better believe it will be hard for not just the American jazz scene, but ANY real jazz fan base to accept as JAZZ. Call it whatever you want Bill, Earthworks is only MARGINALLY an actual JAZZ group. It BECAME more of a jazz group by the end of its life, but it is STILL debatable if it EVER was truly jazz. And YES, the definition of JAZZ, not jazz-rock or something else, SHOULD have SOMETHING to do with the more primal and roots languages that led to the advent of REAL JAZZ; namely the BLUES. As out, or left of center and experimental as Coltrane's music got, it ALWAYS maintained a deep relationship and reference to the BLUES. So, forsaking the blues is not the answer either Bill, regardless of what country one happens to be from. Sorry, Jazz was invented right here in America, and it was invented by African-Americans. So, ignoring its conception, also known as the BLUES COMPLETELY, is not very wise if you want to be considered a JAZZ musician. Doesn't matter what country one is from, need to demonstrate real internalization and mastery of BLUES language and BEBOP language if you want to be considered a JAZZ musician. VERY few exceptions all throughout history of someone that is a REAL JAZZ musician that does NOT exemplify the aforementioned mastery of Blues and Bebop language. George Shearing is a great example. Born in your country Bill, and was a GREAT BEBOP pianist. Gordon Beck, Dave Holland etc etc. ENGLISH Jazz musicians Bill, that DIGESTED and assimilated REAL BEBOP and BLUES language.
I used to have the Earthworks album! It bored me to death... back in the 1990s.... BUT THIS SOUND PRETTY GOOD TODAY!! And cool too... but not very BRITISH! More like if Phillip Glass played jazz... IMHO
Hells Bells is my theme song!!! Jeff Berlin has been on my show . Met Levin on CTTE18.. wanna hear more like this on the radio?? join my page : WAXX TRAXX TO THE MAXX ON WUSB.FM NY .. VERLAINE L. HELL.. ON TWITTER AS #LegendSciora ..
I met Bill & the rest of the "Double Trio"(except for Fripp who shuns these things). after the "Thrak" show in '93. A consumate gentleman, as were they all. Articulate to a fault. New Visions was probably created by people that actually had visions about what quality TV could present. This program was too good for TV & all of its mediocrity.
I would watch Bill every night if he had a show. Quick, smart and hilariously understated.
me too. I didn't know about this

This is great. I love it.
One of the greatest rhythm sections in (then) modern music.
(still)
I Agree
Well then...
Tony Levin looks exactly the same as he did 30 years ago

Bruford! Enjoy your new career my friend. You've left a lot of yourself to keep us company.
Two of a perfect pair no wait...
Two of my musical heroes.
I used to have that CD, i want it again. I saw Bruford's band and was blown away by the sax player.
My favorite drummer.
I saw this when it was first broadcast and still have my copy on VHS, very cool Bill Bruford TV hosting appearance, he introduced his new band Earthworks here, just before their first album was released.
Fripp said it best : ...a Rock Musician with Classical sensibilities, who wants to be a Jazzer...
I saw Bill Bruford and Earthworks in a bar 4 months after this aired and he still didn't know if he was in King Crimson or not.
He got sort of agitated when I asked him about it ...

- One more question, mate: do you plan to age in the next thrity years or so?
- Nah, I don't belevie I will.

Bruford, Levin, and Torn were a good combo. Should have done more.
Love the early Earthworks clip-a great band to catch live-featuring Bill’s compositions and some great young British jazz players
Bruford is so smart ass in this. Amazing.
Thank you!
Thank you Bill.....and Tony

I have a Beta Hi-FI copy of this but my pro deck died a few years ago. All my old Beta tapes from the '80s and early '90s still played perfectly.
I hope you were able to recover those videos... 👍
Istor Craft • On hold during the virus lockdown. Going to send them instead to Kodak for recovery. High hopes!
Both of my Betamax’s are dead too
Bill talking about the female presence in band. "Come on girl , we love to play with you".
My dream drummer
Great to see this. Couldn't remember the show name but glad it found its way into my recos
Up North is such a great tune
Still love hearing "Up North" after all these years.
this album was just released, and i saw them perform at The Birchmere in Northern Va. I arrived with my girl, and I know I drove her home...but they were excellent.
1st edition of Earthworks were criminally neglected.

Amazing G Gorgon Liddy traitor and Chapman Stick virtuoso who knew
Bruford is better than letterman.

Key words in upper case multiple times.... You obviously must be right then.
