Thank you for reporting on this story. So many people don't even know that the Indian Schools existed, and even fewer understand what the system was really doing. These are the things we need to be teaching our kids so that society doesn't repeat the same mistakes. Utah was Mexican territory until 1848, when it became US territory after the Mexican-American war. Utah was granted statehood (as opposed to territorial status) in 1896. This boarding school was in operation in the early 1900s, over half a century after it was officially US territory, and a decade after Utah became a state.
It was not that long ago, and it was US federal and state policy to assimilate the native people. It took decades and decades to realize that children need parents not teachers raising them, then they switched to foster families during the school year and summers back on the reservation. The problem with the children not attending school needed to be addressed but most everyone lived very far apart on the reservations on ranch land and it would take a bus hours to gather them and hours to drop them off, and then there was the poverty such that children were pulled from school to work the farm and ranch. This was a problem in many rural areas whether they were natives or settlers.
Unfortunately there are people and politicians who will call this WOKEISM. They would rather sweep this true history under the rug, because they do not want to be challenged, called out or revealed for the true support of human DARKNESS.

@@juliaweber212"Indian Schools" were a federal thing, the US government was ultimately in charge. Canada had a similar system. Catholics, Mormons, and other religions sometimes helped the government in operating the schools or in arranging placement of students. The boarding school system (and the "host family" concept that followed it) occurred in Utah for about a century (1870s to 1970s). It was branded as a way to help native children from rural reservations receive an education. In many instances it wasn't optional. The children were removed from their families, forced to assimilate into white Christian culture, and sometimes (as mentioned here) forced to do hard labor. Yes they did get an education, but the cost (and some argue the ultimate goal) was erasing native heritage and culture.
