Years ago on Scariest Places on Earth they had a psychic go into one of the schools in the southwest & she saw so much death & torture of children they had to stop the filming.

"that all of humanity would be guarded by an international legal shield" - Nuremburg trials. The Catholic church, nuns and priests, Canada should be held criminally responsible and punished for crimes against humanity.
As a Canadian, I'm glad this is finally becoming more well-known and widespread. Remember learning the history of residential schools and the continuing impact on communities in British Columbia when I was in high school back in 2010 and was surprised how uncommon that is and how most of the country never did. Canada has a much darker past and history than people care to realize.
Is there a silver lining that you were actually able to learn about it in school? It seems like much of the more critical aspects of history is whitewashed in the US

@Opal Allen The Franciscan monks were responsible for turning US native people into slaves. This is something the many monasteries in California don't mention in their "history" talks. However, the Native people who teach courses in Indian history at our colleges do tell this story. I went back to college at are 50+ and was furious that I had never learned this history in public high school.
@Opal Allen It happened here in the US. They're just starting the process. Children buried at the former Carlise school were exhumed and laid to rest with their people.
I realize this is about Canadian Residential Schools but this bleed over from the United States. The governments of both the United States and Canada have BRASS BALLS for criticizing any other government for their violations of human rights.
This (for want of a better term) genocide also occurred in Australia when successive governments removed Aboriginal children from their families. Canada apparently set a horrible precedent that other nations unfortunately followed.

Both my parents and all their siblings went through this BS in Canada. Having lived in both the US and Canada,I can honestly say Canada has the US easily beat when it comes to racism and ignorance.
I can empathize, I was sent to a boarding school, and although you would hope it would be like Hogwarts, it was a military school where much of the same abuse happened. The problem is most were not there by choice, there was racism, and if you were gay, and it was suspected, well it would not be good. After I graduated, I only visited the place once, and I felt that's all I needed to; my heart goes out to all these people who suffered abuse, and humiliation. The wounds never really heal.

Many parents send the children to places like that, because they want them to be the good old fashioned country kid that they want, when I graduated I actually became somewhat of a Marxist sympathizer, probably not what he had in mind. In the United States parents are too afraid of their kids, especially when they become teenagers; your teens can end up being some of the best years of your life if you have the right environment, but when you don't, for many they end up being some of the worst.

CRT opponents are cowards who can’t own and make amends for the pain & loss caused to others in this nation. If you can’t learn from your mistakes they will forever haunt you- as they should.
It's such a very sad story. Mankind has been using religion or insignificant differences as excuses to conduct evil acts of violence for a long long time.
Child Genocide and stealing children for “re-education” also happened in Australia. Australian government has sort of apologised with words but that is where it ends. Many, many Australians still deny it even happened.
My heart goes out to every survivor and my tears fall for those whose lives were cut short. Any man or woman, Priest or Nun, that would steal the innocence, the very childhood of each of these victims, means those predators are pure evil. It is just unconscionable, unacceptable, definitely inappropriate, inexcusable and unforgivable! How unfortunate that the predators responsible for all the abuse and pain were given the luxury of hiding behind the government and the church. The punishment for them should have fit the crime. Each abuser should have been shown the same "compassion" they showed those children. @Lina S Indeed; you would have. ❤ The "monsters" we fear in childhood from movies and books really aren't scary at all. It is the monsters we pass by every day of our lives in school, at work, at a store, in church or just passing on a sidewalk that are truly the stuff of nightmares...for they look like you and me. They are disgused as human beings allowing them to hide in plain sight. Those monsters are the scariest of them all. ~ APRIL LIPKE

How can humanity possibly reconcile these kinds of atrocities ? I can 't fathom what their thoughts/hearts felt when adults perpetrated unspeakable things upon them.
Humanity? I kinda find it funny how people are mentioning this as an error of humanity as if the white colonisers who forced these were the humans and the native American people who faced these are some other beings. It's NOT an atrocity done by humanity. It's done by the European immigrants and their descendants in America.
@@OMR6468 so what kind of other religion committed this kind of despicable crimes especially in peace time and in complete control? I don’t even think Catholicism should be considered religion if not satanic worshiping
Religious institutions must be monitored closely. In my country these institutions are getting richer day by day, by drawing out high checks as donations from their students for continuing education or bring promoted despite the hefty monthly fees. The education is quite fine, but still it's not worth the following of forced Christian faith in these institutions run by nuns and priests, the most unqualified people in the world. The parents and children of the affected Canada community needs to be consolidated, supported, and be promised that no other beliefs will ever come to influence othe cultures
It is so important to hear the victims speak about what happened. Sometimes places and words on a script cannot tell what happened like hearing it from the mouths of those who experienced it.
Long after slavery was abolished in the USA, long after laws were enacted that made women *no longer* regarded as property of men, long after segregation was made illegal, Native American people in the USA as well as indigenous people of Canada were still horribly mistreated in the USA & Canada. Native American people are still feeling the repercussions of attempts to exterminate them in the most un-atoned for genocide.
This happened to Native Americans throughout the Americas, North, Central and South America, all the Indigenous Peoples of the Americas. I am grateful to 60Minutes for its empathetic coverage of this story. More will come out with time.
When are we going to be honest and have a true conversation about what group is responsible for these SYSTEMIC atrocities and hardly ever acknowledge it?
It happened here, too. Both of my grandparents on one side of my family went to residential schools. They destroyed entire Tribes. There is still one "Indian school" still operating here in Oregon. I think it went on much longer in Canada, though, and most of ours were Protestant instead of Catholic
No its not, please don't say that it breaks my heart. This was purely the devil at hand. Those babies are up in Heaven now I'm sure of it! Religion is the opposite, it brings peace. What they were doing wasn't religion.
Although I’m from England what happened to the indigenous children in those barbaric residential schools is indeed heartbreaking 💔 just shows that all these false prophets who teach a false Christ are using God as an excuse to do such terrible things, committing atrocities they’re the religious hypocrites that Jesus warned about. God bless K on mum’s account
This was also the case in Australia... I believe the movie was called rabbit proof fence.. In which children were kidnapped By the Catholic Church. Then again what else is new?
Let's not be quick to blame (only) Canada. Maybe you should report on the US residential schools too than just mention it in passing. For "THE" book on the Canadian Residential schools read John S. Milloy's "A National Crime".
Funny how when another country atrocities are exposed the USA gets dragged into it; but when America's atrocities are exposed, no other country is ever brought up
I'm so sorry for the heartbreak that spans generations. They deserve and need justice. I'm so happy for Ed Bitternose that he can now tell his wife he loves her and he is raising bison while connecting with his Cree roots.
This is still happening in many devolving nations, but the media doesn't cover it. Christain missionaries are trying to do the same thing India, but the Indian Civil society is more aware and lobbying the government to take action against this trillion-dollar industry called the church. If proper research is done the number of cases in India will probably be in millions.
More recently, a Hindu nationalist movement has committed violence against Muslims in India with the encouraging of India’s leader. It has been clear for many generations, but fervent exercises of one’s religion and culture contributes to xenophobic tribalism and the result is suffering. Humanity can’t seem to escape this ever-repeating lack of foresight and goodwill.
You do have an issue in India within the Hindu population with abuse against women. In India a women is reportedly raped every 15 minutes. Multiply that by 24x7, 365 days a year. And keep in mind the majority of rape cases still go unreported

i only learned that this actually happened from watching a show called anne with an e, it displays a girl named ka'kwet who gets taken away and every time she spoke her language she would get punished in awful ways. the fact that this actually happened just breaks my heart.
I had heard about this before and was so glad that they were brave enough to air the story on Anne with an E. Maybe this genocide of Indigenous people(children) lead by religious and government entities will feel the wrath of what they allowed to happen. No amount of money can soothe that kind of torment and pain Monsters inflicted on them. This has to be taught in schools so it Never happens to Anyone again. Thanks for listening to my rambling. Oh wee Canada you got some skeletons in the closet as well. I'm pretty certain at most schools especially boarding schools it's not normal to have 35 of your class mates die for various reasons. I lost maybe 4 or 5 classmates during my entire school career and not one happened at school. I know times were much different back then but making things like this aware to the public will hopefully teach people what not to do in the future.

My ancestors(The French Acadien) Acadians came from Nova Scotia to America went through kinda the same situation after being relocated in America during the great deportation because they were forbidden to speak their language of French heritage when they were kicked out of Canada in 1755-1763 when they refused to sign an unconditional oath of allegiance to Britain so the British governor Charles Lawrence and the Nova Scotia Council ordered the Acadians to be expelled from Canada and once arriving in America they were treated as though they weren’t even humans and were forbidden to speak their language and some had their children taken from them also. Today I’m Proud to be a Descendent of My French speaking Great Grandparents and My Grandparents that had never learned to speak English but my mother and father refused to teach us french because of the punishments and the belittling they endured on the school grounds in America 😢 (remember their parents couldn’t communicate in English)

Of the more than 200,000 Natives murdered in the northern hemphismire, 60 minutes did not do their homework. These immigrants did not do their homework.
How Native Americans suffered (Still suffering with poverty) in both the US and Canada is unbelievable. Just think that they were the original habitants in both countries and yet they were almost wiped out by immigrants coming over from Europe and elsewhere. Really breaks my heart.
This has also happened here in Ireland in the mother and baby homes. There are over 700 babies who died in one convent alone in the care of the church who were dumped in a septic tank and our Irish government have done nothing to retrieve these remains to give these poor babies a proper burial. God only knows how many more babies died in other homes. As in Canada, the governments supported the churches in doing this. Babies were taken from their mothers without consent. I would love if 60 minutes did a story on the mother and baby homes in Ireland.
I just mentioned this in my post. My question is how can all those nuns and priests not be charged for these crimes? How can the church just look away?
It always stuns me how those seen as authoritarian decide who and what is beneath them. Then, they think they can dictate how to treat them. It does not matter what skin covers the bones, it is the arrogance and inhumanity that is in their minds.

Years ago on Scariest Places on Earth they had a psychic go into one of the schools in the southwest & she saw so much death & torture of children they had to stop the filming.

I agree completely. The White Savior mentality has got to end.
