Either China or India. Likely the former. It's a good observation that I've heard Davis state before. In some ways, China and India had preeminence in the civilized world since ancient times. The only exception really being the last 200 years or so.

Its illegal for government organizations to do what they do at the scale they do but in America 'business' does wrong. The irony is nobody really 'planned' this - it just turned out; if you want to conduct massive data collection as a precursor to world dominance you only have to promise people convenient access into the channels for 'live gossip'. Lanier has for better or worse pointed out one possible direction that we unplug from the matrix - of course most people just laugh.
