Assuming she is not a psychopath, imagine the incredible stress of having taken that company to those limits and all that money KNOWING it was all bullshit, and knowing you couldn't get away or just disappear?? Imagine how her life was on a day to day.
It could be because she is such a psychopath and most psychos have a strong tendency towards habitual lying that soon they start to believe their own lies. This was an original and thoughtful take on the case of Elizabeth Holmes’ and Theranos. I appreciate that the documentary maintained placing accountability with Holmes while also crediting her for her vision that has become reality through other medical startups. The film successfully made the case that it was the compounding effect of overaggressive valuation with too little due diligence from the media, SV community, the board, federal agencies, and investors. I agree Holmes is culpable but so are all the players that did not perform their core duties - While she was center stage, it was indeed all of the players that failed and enabled the deception to continue for over a decade.
A lot of people have the idea of a flying machine but guess who got the credit? Holmes’ idea was simply the history of the world: doing more with less. Nothing groundbreaking there.
1:11:14 "Venture capital, and the rule of capital in VC is that out of 10 investments you'll have 3 that'll fail, you'll have 3 that'll kinda go fine, and then you'll have one or two that actually make you money" So the so called specialist in VC can only count to 8 or 9. That explains how Holmes played a mockery out of everyone.
Kudos on your first doc, YF. Enjoyed it. Such a bizarre woman, and I wonder how people didn't see through her strange façade. It seems obvious in retrospect that her personality was as fraudulent as her product.
I came across this in the week of the verdict and it provides a fascinating insight to everything which has unfolded over the last few weeks. Thank you for posting. 🙏
Why aren't the board members being individually held accountable? When I served on one for a charity, the paperwork clearly indicated that the board members were legally responsible for the decisions they made.
Now I understand the function & purpose of a board! Always thought it was more of a position to recompense the biggest investors or donors. A title only...Big fail at Theranos.
@@anitahamel4576 When the Board found out that we could be personally liable, the parking lot got repaved as a top priority. It was a tripping hazard and blocked handicapped access. I think it's hugely important.
One sad aspect of this is that there is probably someone out there who has the training, know how and brains to develop a device which could actually make blood testing on a consumer level a reality. Due to the scam that Holmes committed and also her holding stupid as hell patents which can block others from developing these devices -- it will be very hard if not almost impossible for a truly skilled person to develop such a device. It's very simple, IF prosecutors CANNOT prove she knew the product didn't work, then it's NOT GUILTY. The real issue is why these investors not want to sue her? It's their money, are they too stupid to learn about their own investments? The SEC/AG should prevent these so called "board members", mostly irresponsible doctors from ever serving on a board again.
What is this garbage. Homes knew all about what was going on. It's documented in detail in 'Bad Blood' how Elizabeth was informed multiple times that it didn't work, after which she went straight to investors and lied to get money. To make her a victim in this 'documentary' is disgusting.
Be fair now, Elizabeth disagrees. Anyway, it was the medias fault. And those venturist people. Sonny. What's that other guys name? You know, the one thats always doing stuff. Yeah, right.
Yahoo, this was really good. You brought something different out here from the other documentaries on Holmes and Theranos. Several elements and dimensions, really. But just one example was the generational networks of VC and the history and outlook of Silicon Valley. Great job.
The investors who didn't do any due diligence, are also responsible for the fraud and potential human harm because it's tTHEIR MONEY THAT PURPATRATED THE FRAUD AND POTENTIALLY PUT PEOPLE IN DANGER. But of course, they don't take any responsibility for it. Putting the responsibility on someone else is how they got to the big jobs and big money in the first place.
There's nothing particularly different that Holmes did from other pharmaceutical companies except not distribute mouth watering returns for these vultures....i mean investors.
The narrative of this documentary sucks. They try really hard to show her as a victim or some kind of misguided entrepreneur that had a great vision and didn't make it, like many others in SV. Well, it's documented that several of her employees (and ex-teachers) told her that it's a) not working and won't work and b) they use ethically questionable practices to diagnose real patients (with potentially life-threatening consequences). Hell she even wanted to sell the (non-working) product to the military. All the concerns were not only brushed off but the employees were also threatened. Those who didn't shut up were fired or left. She also kept all departments on purpose isolated and didn't hire any people with medical knowledge for higher positions. They even created a fake lab for visits. It's pretty obvious that this was an elaborate scam for making money and that the intention to create a viable product was secondary. Also then some still claim that the device is doable. Well, maybe one day but currently we would need several MAJOR breakthroughs in medical diagnostics to make it possible. Just ask yourself: how plausible does it sound? Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence and it seems not a single person on the board asked some expert in that field before giving her millions. That's more than foolish. Also the people working in medical diagnostics were saying from the beginning on that this device is bogus and no one listened to them. Here's what I think: she's an sociopath with some crazy sprinkled on top. She wanted to make money, be famous, etc. and she probably really thought if she just throws money at it, it will magically work one day. She gambled high. If this was some other field and product (where a positive outcome is more likely) she may even have made it, she just made the mistake to choose the wrong one. Also a product where peoples life are at stake isn't a viable testing ground, but a sociopath isn't (emotionally) aware of that.
With all due respect, I saw some other interviews on TH-cam where they outright ask her if the military is using her machine and she clearly said "no", that it was just a possibility. I think she lied and skirted around that, as well as doing the fake labs, lied to Walgreens, etc. to get funding. It was all about funding the project...and funding her lifestyle. I agree completely...she gambled too high, and should have said they are working on the mini-lab but been honest that it wasn't operational yet.
@@bettywith2girls Thank goodness the military wasn't using the theranos analyzers. That really got me worried. Not that soldiers' lives are more important, every patient is important. Why did she not realize that life & death was involved here?.
"If" I were a venture capitalist I might have asked myself.. "Self? What credentials does this 19 year old drop out have to revolutionize the medical industry?" That question is what makes this story so interesting. Not that a 19 year old drop out could figure out how to conduct fraud and deep voice, but how big investors actually fell for it. I understand greed can blind people, but to this level is astonishing. Also embarrassing which is maybe why some big investors don't want to take it further?
13:45 You won't. It will continue to happen. Ted Talks are where I first saw her and it meant they lost all credibility for me as they obviously don't do background checks on their speakers. If there is money to be made, this will continue. It happened with Magic Leap also but that didn't put people in danger of death or long term health issues.
It was very obvious that somebody was going to pick up on Holmes' vision and make something like it, but by following a more realistic approach. Holmes never listened to her scientists or engineers. She could have made her machine, she was just going for too small of a device, using too little blood, and trying to run too many tests at once. Someone else will be victorious, because they'll actually approach it the right way and have the knowledge to pull it off. Probably with some of the same people who gained R&D intelligence from working for Theranos. She may end up sitting in jail for overestimating her abilities and ignoring her experts and pretending everything was a-okay in a very hyped up way. When it was very clear that it wasn't. I actually have the slightest bit of compassion for her. Other people will make millions and billions, with an idea that was not really on the horizon, before she came along. I wonder if the fact that somebody is actually pulling it off, albeit much more intelligently, will work to her advantage in her defense. It will illustrate that her idea was not unobtainable. She just wasn't on the right track because she wasn't listening to the right people. But she had a good idea. Unfortunately, it takes so much more, than a good idea, to get to market. LOL.
I think she guilty of not communicating they were failing. I think she’s guilty of caring on the facade too long. I think we all know that companies get money before they have a made product.

Well, she got her wish to become a billionaire, and, now, everything that goes along with it, ie.; all the trouble she has inherited, as well as a prison term. Perhaps, in prison, she will begin to understand the folly of her thinking; the wrongness of greed and wanting fame. The obscure man or woman who works daily and never has a lot of money is far ahead of her in every way.
You are too harsh on this visionary young lady, Elizabeth.
@@viyer3389 I am not too harsh. She understands her actions. She’s an adult and she is very calculated in what she has done.
@@viyer3389 sorry, the grooming started A. when the parents sent her Mandarin Language lessons and worse when she was a youngster and kept pushing her to be 'worth' something! Well she is well worth something now: an orange jumper wearer. As should be. The story tells how greedy and inept parents push their growing children to be what they want. They did not foster autonomy.
She was no victim, she is still no victim. Just because she is a woman and the trial is taking place in 2021, it is no reason to twist things so make people believe she was a victim. She has to be held accountable for what she did.
800 employees ?
What the hell were they all doing ?
She would never never never have made it if it wasn’t for her skin color. She’s somewhat pretty, blonde and talks smart. She’s up there with Bernie Madoff.
It is all non verbal behaviour and nothing of essence.

She has Jewish blood.
WTF. Nothing to do with race and everything to do with sociopathic clever and manipulative behaviour.
Dan's statement that Holmes is a victim is NOT true and he must have an attraction to her. How could you look at the whole body of work and state that?? Makes zero sense other than she's captivated him and the other guy like she did with her board. Disgusting.
That was a bizarre statement. It was basically, "They got what they deserved."
*buys turtle neck*... "Am I Steve Jobs yet"?
😆🤣
I could have gotten huge breast implants and became Dolly Parton...Crap!
This "Doc" suggests the tech was possible, proven even by a previous company's work. That company did not have a working device. The issue is simple: too small a sample, too many demands.
It's not a public company, if you are accredited investor, you can only blame yourself for not doing the due diligience well enough.
Nice work, Alexis Keenan. Keep at it. Looking forward to seeing more great things from you...!
I really enjoyed this entire presentation. The first half hour was some analysis and then the documentary itself. Great job and I look forward to more….
Surprised this is the first documentary YF has ever done! Really enjoyed it. Hopefully the beginning of many more to come.
Agreed. It was well done.
Seriously? This appears to be what is known as ‘branded content’ and they are suppose to disclose that.
I wonder how much money has been stashed offshore.
Exactly! Ck her parents backyard attics and basement. NO ONE IS THINKING ABOUT THE MONEY!
I hope she gets serious jail time. Meanwhile, why don't I feel sorry that the Waltons, Murdoch and DeVos each lost over $100 million?
But I do feel sorry for the people who took her fake blood tests and the employees that her legal team threatened and harassed when they exposed the truth.
Because they had 100 million dollars to fork over?? Good Lord, who has that kind of money...
Yeah, I don't either. Maybe because they have THAT much money to lose and just walk away like it's just another day. In the end, these investors know the score and they know that they are taking a big risk for a potential big payout, which may never come. It's the name of that type of investor game.
OMG, even Walgreens thought this b.s. was viable, tho!
Thank you Yahoo Finance! It was an interesting take on the case of Theranos. You contextualized it, shining a light on the culture that enabled it. This allowed us to take a better look at the case and to learn more from it. I look forward to more great documentaries from you. Gracias y ten cuidado!
Narcissism at it's finest. First things first, what voice are we going to use today? She would be a great acting coach. She lied about the lies that she lied about. GUILTY!!!
With eight older men in the jury and one in the judge's seat, I can only hope her baby blues won't charm her way out of wrongdoing
I couldn't care less about those rich investors being fooled. What upsets me is the possibility of patients dying because of this fraud. Were these machines on helicopters evacuating soldiers from an actual field of combat? Must buy Bad Blood book.
I just finished the book and it was amazing. I’m tempted to read it again. The book doesn’t mention the military, but I read an article stating the military did not purchase any of these machines. They wouldn’t talk to Holmes and did not want her devices.
@@terryKessler42719 Thank you. Big sigh of relief on my part.
Great job YF in putting this documental together 👍🏽👍🏽
I can't believe this doesn't have more views... This was excellent!!
Agree. I was surprised by the low number of views
She scammed investers out of millions, even worse she was dishonest with actual people medical. But yet still they made it sound like it wasnt really her fault and even partially calling her a victim. Poor people that commit crimes on a much smaller scale than her get way more blow back.
Why is Walgreens getting off so cheap? Not to mention the investors. They all had information that they kept to themselves for there own advantage/profit. Sick as our healthcare system.
One thing I’ve never understood is the big deal about “It’s only a drop of blood.” I don’t like getting stuck with needles much but once the needle is in I don’t care if they take 2 ounces. 3 drops or 3 ounces it hurts the same.
Her best bet would be an insanity plea. She's clearly a sociopath.
I think you may be correct.
Well. its obvious thats where this is headed. WHEN (not if) things turn against them in court, thats the obvious move. I can certainly see this Sunny character turning on Holmes at some point.
I remember the first time I ever saw an article on Theranos. My very first thought was "Why a college dropout? Wouldn't a medical professional have come up with this already?" Not to be haughty or full of myself, but I had questions from the first moment i read about her.
Once confronted with conflicting information, they prefer their side of the story over the truth. So I don't believe that she felt any guilt, shame, or remorse for her crime.
@@Godrules1111
I think you are right... but that is why I said IMAGINE SHE IS NOT A PSYCHOPATH....because a normal person just couldn't pull that off... but it made me wonder THEN who a normal person deals with such numbers and power and such a huge business. Imagine al the billionaires and the ones that own businesses etc... their brains and moralities MUST BE a bit different than you and me, no??
@@ggrthemostgodless8713 Oh, they are definitely different! Did you notice that during her interviews she looked totally different than she did when she was on her way to court and had some downtime before and after with her husband. These two women are not the same person. My hunch is that this person grew up poor and idolized all the celebrities and people with power practically her whole life and still does. Her dream was to rub elbows with the money makers, like Paul Mitchell, and the Clintons and she did. Years ago, I remember a similar story about someone on her way to prison and she just happened to be pregnant by her boyfriend and got to have her baby in prison. Special note: This person looks like she's had quite a few children in the past, she is no young chicken. Also, is 11 years proper protocol for fraud? Because I thought 10 was the max. I think this one did more crimes still to be released to the public and we are going to find out more about her past.

Another sad tale about greed, hunger of fame and lack of empathy
1:11:14 "Venture capital, and the rule of capital in VC is that out of 10 investments you'll have 3 that'll fail, you'll have 3 that'll kinda go fine, and then you'll have one or two that actually make you money"
So the so called specialist in VC can only count to 8 or 9. That explains how Holmes played a mockery out of everyone.
Yeah...I noticed that too! (lol)!
Very informative documentary. I hope to see more from Yahoo! Finance.
Kudos on your first doc, YF. Enjoyed it. Such a bizarre woman, and I wonder how people didn't see through her strange façade. It seems obvious in retrospect that her personality was as fraudulent as her product.
When there is a vision and a mission, it must be broken down into specifics: timelines, tasks, audit, process, compliance and controls.
I was actually pleased to see Henry Kissinger was one of those who lost a pisspot full of money. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.
Agreed. (he is a war criminal, you know).
Having a war criminal on your board must stand for something
All those pathetic apologists for her 'vision' seem to be conveniently dismissing one crucial fact - she was putting lives in danger.
Oh wow Yahoo did a thing!
I hope Holmes gets the book thrown at her in terms of sentencing. And as well, I hope that those patents she is holding are revoked.
@1:23:00 - Truvian & Genalyte. Did you watch the whole docu?

Unfortunately, feminist don’t believe women should be held accountable for anything. In their opinion, whenever a woman fails it’s men’s fault.

I like how women in high places still use men in their lives as a defense for failure but men on trial aren't allowed.
Yes, exactly. Caveat Emptor - if you're going to buy shares (or anything) - do your due diligence!
Send this fraud trixer to jail. She or they played with people life's and fraud.
Very well done!
She's 100% innocent- and that's her natural voice!
There's nothing particularly different that Holmes did from other pharmaceutical companies except not distribute mouth watering returns for these vultures....i mean investors.

Well Holmes and Balwani hid their relationship from the board so I believe they hid many things from the board.
Damn! Holmes was really good at picking the pockets of the rich and powerful. Applause, applause.

Her eyeballs. She never blinks.
Lawlessness, self deception and greed
A perfect analysis.
@@bettywith2girls Thank goodness the military wasn't using the theranos analyzers. That really got me worried. Not that soldiers' lives are more important, every patient is important. Why did she not realize that life & death was involved here?.

Yessssss new theranos/Elizabeth Holmes content
The board member selections and responsibilities are often out of integrity.
I never thought a documentary could be so praiseworthy. So well done.
How could it not be true, she was wearing a black turtleneck?
I never get sick of watching Holmes and Theranos disaster. Maybe I have something wrong too.😂
For me ,it’s thermos and Chris watts?!
LOL.
Rich people getting scammed? How refreshing.
Self made is bullshite. Without her family's connections she wouldn't have had those massive investments or board members.
