Talisman, The Dark Tower and HeroQuest were my gateway into rpgs. For a year, my best friend and me played these games together several times a week. Sometimes, other friends joined us. Then, when we were around 13, I came to our usual board game session one day and found him reading a booklet out of a box sitting next to him. He told me he wanted to try this new game today. The game was the first edition of Das Schwarze Auge, a German rpg, and even so my first character's died, we were hooked. Next week, we started a rpg group and never really stopped playing ever since. Especially Talisman has a special place in my heart because of this story and when my best friend wanted to throw out his old beat up version of it from back then, I took it off his hands. Still have it to this day and ocassionally pull it out...
@@kereminde if you have Tabletop Simulator on Steam, you can play this. There's a workshop item that's Talisman 2nd edition (this one) with all of the expansions. There's another that's Talisman 4th edition (the newest one) with all of the expansions.
I enjoy just about everything MCDM puts out IMMENSELY, but this one takes the cake for me. There's such a great atmosphere as they're basically just hanging out for 4 hours taking the piss, with the game acting as a backdrop. The game itself is interesting, but the commentary and things like "PedLAR" are what cracked me up and keeps me coming back to watch MCDM content!
I really enjoyed this video. I’m always amazed/entertained by everything Matt does. His personality and demeanor in all of his other videos is so pleasant and optimistic. I enjoy seeing how much he clearly loathes every second of this game when everybody else seem’s to be enjoying it.
Matt clearly needs to get his Warrior of Chaos converted to Good (if that's even possible - I forget, it might have a special rule where it isn't) and then continue his crusade to convert everyone else to Evil.

I was a game tester for what would become Talisman Timescape. In testing though it was called Fourth Dimension. I still have the paper board, rules and cards for it. It looked way different then, I guess that’s what testing is for.
The digital version of this game is much smoother. The UI is funky, but it helps you learn the game. After a few sessions, I already ordered the physical board game

Never seen the random ending. Our house rule to make the game more fun and don't let one player race ahead so easy: When you change in dead monsters to raise abilities the cost to raise is equal to the number you are raising to. I.e. to raise to Strength 8, you have to change in monsters with a combined str of 8.
One time my friends begged me to play. I finally relented. We were playing with Timescape, by the way. I was the first to go. Someone how I ended up in the Timescape on the first turn and through incredible luck end up in the center of the board and it was the Crown of Command. I won in the first turn! I got up thanking them for the game. They of course would not let me get away that easily.
I remember playing this game just chasing players as a Troll (one of the available characters) in the outermost edge of the board because killing the other players was a legit early game strategy . such good times
I remember when me and my friends used to play, we made a rule that no one could pick the wizard character because he ALWAYS has TWO spells. He was too much of a powerhouse.
Matt: "Any game that takes you that long to realise it's not a good game is a classic game." Talisman was one of the first board games I ever played, and I vvvvery quickly figured out it's not so much as game as it is a random event generator. Glad people enjoy it, it's just not for me.
I was the same. Played it once and really disliked the entirely random nature of it, I didn't have a good time. Matt and the other great people at MCDM make everything look fun though. They somehow come close to enticing me to try it again. So charming. Fortunately I roll with advantage against charm effects. That said, I will be watching the conclusion but, again, it's more for the team than the game itself.
Just because you have a really good character, it doesn't mean you'll win. There's a good amount of chance around this. When I first got introduced to this game, we had a friend of the family who created a few characters to go with this, just about the same power level. To get characters we rolled 3 dice, choosing in which order. And, yes, that meant we had 216 characters, with Timescape, Dungeon, and Adventure boards. And, if I remember right, we rolled 3 characters to start with each.
This reminds me of "Quest For Shangri La," The board game put out a decade ago by Psychopathic Records. Or as most people call it... "Juggalo-Monopoly".
I don't think you do get experience from the champion. We've never played as such. To get XP, don't you have to kill Monsters or Spirits? The Champion is neither. He is a follower. If a card is occupying the space, you cannot choose to ignore the card and draw a new card, when the space says draw one card. Halloween should not have been drawn on the space with that medallion given it says draw one card. The genie should keep his spell after the Magic Vortex. This spell isn't the Player's. It is specifically the Genie's. The Magic Vortex takes all spells from all players, but it says nothing about taking spells from followers.
Monopoly is one of the most known board games and its completely random. The only choices in the game is how many houses or hotel to put on a property and then later if there is even any point in trading but theres no point because the game still only comes down to what spots people land on

Our experience: The Seer is the most powerful character by far (draws one encounter card on each square, chose to encounter it or draw another which must be encountered.). Edit: Sorry, it was the Prophetess.

I would say that he is unaffected by magical vortex. 2:59:05 When you encounter multiple strength enemies at once they add together against you. That encounter should be treated as a strength 5 enemy. 3:17:25 The marsh should affect Töm's character, because he only has 4 strength. The additional 4 is from the ape and axe, which only add in combat.
Man, Talisman gets unfairly crapped on so often on the internet. The 4th edition has removed most of the OP cards and characters, and tightened the rules up greatly. Of course there's still RNG, but WAY less than the first 3 editions. Add the corner board expansions and the reliance in RNG to win is reduced massively, as each corner serves a strategic purpose. And it's simplicity and rules on dice, cards and movement give you a straightforward, strict idea of what you can do in a turn. There is no mucking about and getting hit by Analysis Paralysis like more complex games.
@@MCXL1140 For me it was always the philosopher/fortune-teller characters who were soooo overpowered. Any ability that let's to pick between two adventure cards is going to outpace all the other players. It's like they have a double exp rate because they can avoid so many bad encounters.

@Jonathan Champion they even read the description and say that it is needed to pass through the valley of fire which is the last square before the crown of command. I know I'm being a rules lawyer about fantasy monopoly but the it can make a difference.
A fun, silly game that's converted many thousands of people into gamers. Perhaps not the deepest gameplay, best not to overthink it.

It might not be complex but it is very evocative, I can confirm that it takes several hours to not complete, pack away and put on a shelf for years.

These rules seem slightly different to what I am used to. I thought the talisman was needed to get to the crown of command not the inner region?
