Nursing students master a lot of different nursing skills; and it can make it feel like the nursing life is a long list of nurse skills and memorization. But there is so much more! Nursing is meant to be fun too!
In this video, I will share some need to know information about carbapenems and pharmacology; drugs such as meropenem and ertapenem; and help to make pharmacology easy.
Carbapenems are a class of antibiotics and in this lesson we talk about how to easily remember the mechanism of action for carbapenems, the side effects (adverse reactions) and I share some fun tips using the actual word as a mnemonic to take the mystery out of nursing pharmacology.

I am the type that needs visual or hands on to grasp the concept instead of reading out of book. Thank you for spending your time to help mold us future nurses and get through nursing school.

Carbapenems are beta lactamase inhibitors and mechanism of action is similar to penicillins and cephalosporins. They bind to the penicillin binding proteins and inhibit cell wall synthesis. Carbapenems do not work on ribosome function. Some antimicrobials that inhibit protein synthesis by binding to ribosomal subunits include macrolides, aminoglycosides, tetracyclines, and sulfonamides to name a few. But not carbapenems.
