I soak neem cakes in water and moisten my soil with it before planting seeds. This has stopped gnats for me, and yes, I'm running out of space, so I purchased a greenhouse that is in front of my patio door, which gets a ton of light. As they grow into larger plants, I move them from grow lights to this greenhouse until hardening off time, while I still keep the smaller seedlings upstairs under lights in the "Grow Room.""
I missing my two small greenhouses this year. I will have to work hard to get one again for next year. Hubby did build a second rolling cart for me to get my by for this year. Yippee! 😊🌷
Hello lady. I enjoyed watching your wonderful kolyos videos. Congratulations. I see truly amazing knowledge and equipment. I wish you luck. I send greetings from Türkiye / Kütahya. I wish you success.
I use mosquito bits for fungus gnats. They sell them in pellets and disks. I have only used the pellets. I know The Gardeners Workshop uses the disks. They drop one in the watering can and water the plants with it. I found it pretty effective. I do the boiling water to the seed start as well. I’ve heard the yellow sticking traps work great. Love your channel…neighbor to the south in Mass.
Yesterday I put up a bunch of yellow sticky traps and added the Mosquito Bits pellets to water. I'll be watering my seedling with Mosquito Bits going forward. Fingers crossed I win the war! Lol. I'm a transplant and am originally from Burlington MA. Thank you for your comment. Happy gardening! 🌻
Everything looks so great! I still have sweet peas, Japanese anemone pink saucer, my herbs, and nasturtium to start. My Alternanthera desperately needs potted up.
Hi there. Thanks so much! You are going to be hooked with gardening after this year. ♥😊 I use LED shop lights. They are 5,000 lumen. I had bought some of these at Walmart (Hypertough brand) and some from Sam's Club (Honeywell brand). They are 4 foot lights that fit perfectly on my shelving racks. Here's a link to a video that talks about my grow light systems: th-cam.com/video/A46xUuTu_q0/w-d-xo.html.
Two years ago I brought in a tray of petunias from outside for winter they were near the dryer vent though they had lint on them. They were full of APHIDS they all almost killed all my seedlings. They were everywhere in the house, yes fungus naats are terrible too. now when I bring in any plant from the outdoors I treat the soil with 3% peroxide diluted 1:1. Then with two waterings I make tea from those Mostiquto bits 4 tablespoons per gallon as per label directions
Ugh. I'm sure having the aphids & fungus gnats in the house was awful. I'll have to try your hydrogen peroxide treatment if I do bring in any plants in to overwinter. Last year when I had a fungus gnat infestation, the yellow sticky traps combined with the Mosquito Bits did help. I just mixed up some Mosquito Bits with water last night in fact. I'll be using that with each watering going forward. Fingers crossed... 🤞🏼😊
I used your advised I planted the seeds the same way. I already transferred about 60 and have probably 60 more. I didn't do well with Impatient only one germinated.. I didn't covet the seeds. I planted Aster seeds they doing well my Hungarian peppers and 🍅 doing well but my Cosmos leggy. I also planted some Zinia seeds. Of course Dahlia tubers gladiolus bulbs. I do have a question I started winter sowing snapdragons this is the first time. They all germinated I was so exited. Do you transplant them into the garden when they get bigger or transplant them into pots, but I would need lots of pots.
I'm so glad to hear that some of your plants are thriving. Yay! Regarding the snapdragons, you can transplant them directly out into your garden. The good news is that they're already hardened off and should be nice and strong. Just be sure that you don't have any terribly cold nights in the forecast. We got down to 29 F / - 1.7 C last night. However, snapdragons can take some cold weather. 😊🌺
For the space issue- I decided I'm going to use.my grow room for germinating seeds, & growing them on just for about 2-3 weeks, then moving them out to the greenhouse instead of buying a bunch more shelves & grow lights. So I purchased a 10x12 harbor freight greenhouse last fall, hecause the cost of more lights and shelves would have cost me almost as much as the greenhouse. (& I needed something like a greenhouse anyways, because when its time to harden them off, I really need a covered stricture i can take them out to, so that theyregetting exposure to sun & a little wind, but not TOO MUCH. & I also needed something that gives protection from rain, because since they're in seed starting mix- which is super light & fluffy, the rain comes down so hard, it will cause the soil to be splashed out.) Also, it REALLY saves my back, becaause now I wont have to bend over 50 times a day to pick up the trays, sit them outside, then pick them all back up to bring back inside...
Do you have shelving units in your greenhouse? I had a greenhouse similar to yours that I also bought from Harbor Freight. The issue that I ran into was that the plants on the bottom shelves often go too much water from runoff. The only way to fix that problem was for me to remove each tray from the shelves, water them outside and then bring each tray back in. It was a lot of work. I'd love to know how you're dealing with that. ♥🌷
I love your informative videos. I do have a problem I hope you can help. I up potted my sprouted ranunculus into 3" pots about 2 weeks ago. Last week I fertilized them and today I notice odd growth and curled leaves. I am heartbroken that I over fertilized and not sure if I should toss them or if I should unpot them, rinse the roots and repot in new soil? As the plants are from corms, will the corms be damaged as well as the roots? Hope you can help!
Following..My timing is the same.I fertilized them today, but mine are drooping. I think I left them too dry before watering. What kind of fertilizer did you use?
@@mariyanikova818 I used a half strength of Miracle Gro. I did end up unpotting a few of the worst, rinsed the roots and repot in new soil. The rest I will leave as they are and next week I will use 1/4 strength fish emulsion. I hope you can save yours!
Oh no! I can share that ranunculus are very finicky when it comes to overwatering. That can rot the corms. They will also droop if they get too dried out. I fertilize mine about twice a month at this point with half strength Miracle Gro. I water them deeply but then do not water them again until they dry out just a little bit. I hope this information is helpful
@@budgetgardeningvita Thank you but my concern was more about how to save over fertilized plants, not overwatering. I did my best to fix the problem and hope it works.
Can you put these sized lobelia in the garden directly? Mine just germinated and I don’t think I will have enough time for growth when I plant at the end of the month.
Hi there. I'd say that you want your plants to be at least 2 inches in height before planting them outside. Definitely start fertilizing them with a weak / half strength of fertilizer (I use Miracle Grow) once a week after the plants have a couple of sets of leaves on them just to jumpstart them. Good luck! ♥💐
I deal with fungus gnats hatching from my seed starting mix every year. I hate it because then they of course end up in my kitchen & on fruit, etc. I use the yellow sticky traps to MONITOR THEM (because the sticky traps do nothing to control runt) Since they can lay HUNDREDS of eggs per week, you have to get/use something to kill the eggs. I use bactive (a cheaper alternative to the very popular "gnatrol". I akso get it in much smaller bags, so it's not as expensive! & you use it to water/when you water, every 5 days. Definitely use it every 5 days. Dont skimp on that! Because of the quick life cycle of the fungus gnat/larvae, if you wait say 8 days for example, then all the fungus gnats will be hatched & flying around. Then THEY will be laying hundreds MORE EGGS!
Great advice. I'll have to look into the bactive. I just put up a bunch of yellow sticky traps and also mixed up a solution of water with the Mosquito Bits that I had on hand from last year. Fingers crossed ... 🤞🏼😊
I like to use a wooden skewer for pricking out my seedlings. Im so ready to start planning my seed starting list.
That's a great idea about using a wood skewer to prick out seedlings! I'm with you! I'm already itching to start sowing seeds... 😅🌱🌼
