    Lobelia is a beautiful little flower that comes in more colors than just blue. It is a nice filler for your containers, borders, hanging baskets.

      Oh I didn't know that. I buy them in the dry cool season and they grow and fower for five - six months. I tried them once in the wet season and they were flattened by the rains and humidity. Our winters are mild sunny and pleasant, the sun is just not as strong.

    A tip for those growing lobelia, sow into plugs. It saves transplanting which i found to be very time consuming as they are so delicate, it is easy enough to do but very time consuming.

      A window sill would probably do for germination, however, these are somewhat of a type of “weed”, and they do appreciate clear ground and nice amount of sun. Species has been known to just “pop” up after a section has been logged, or such... hope this helps!

    Is there any reason you make a soil dough, never seen that before. Usualy people just water the dry soil then sprinkle the seed and press down lightly with something flat. I agree you can never have enough Lobelia erinus. Easy blue like no other. Only they need full sun, they're not so my heat worshipers as light worshipers, the more the better and flourish longer if the temps are on the cooler side at the same time.

    • @carriesgardeningchannel856
      @carriesgardeningchannel856  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, I find that if you don't make the soil moist first it will not take up the water which delays planting and causes other issues so mixing the soil first with water is something that I always do before planting. Lobelia is a plant that I use a lot in mixed plantings.

      @@carriesgardeningchannel856 Oh IC, yes old or otherwise dried out compost is very difficult to use particularily peat. You should always seal or close your bags very well. I find mixing garden clay into it fixes it quite well too and ups the fertility 100%.

      @carriesgardeningchannel856  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, It's hard to get the seed starting mixes to uptake the water so I found a way of mixing the soil that just seems to work for me. I do try to keep the bags closed to prevent contamination. I don't mix clay into my seed starting and potting soil mixes due to possible contamination. I do sometimes mix compost into certain vegetable planters and containers.

  • @zillahmills6549

    Hi Carrie I already have a nice little bundle of Lobelia in a small half circle I’d cut out of the grass it actually was growing up the front garden in a tiny part of the drive way when we moved in there was a large load of firn type trees dividing our front from next door but they were so hard for me to keep nice as I only had hand sheers so we had them taken up and a small wall built there is about an inch and half of just stones etc before pavement begins it was growing along there I only noticed it last year I kept it weed free but as time went on these beautiful little blue flowers were appearing along this small gap I started picking them from the roots the kids had got older so they weren’t playing football or playing in the garden so finally it became my retreat and I cut this small semicircle and planting the small bits of lobelia now they have made a lovely show , my son has just bought me some packs of flowers one of them are lobelia now we are actually in April do you think I could sprinkle the seeds into and around the existing ones I have I have made the semi circle bigger and fertilised the soil around the existing ones I thought maybe if I put the seeds on a plate I can use tweezers to place them in the soil then water it with Luke warm water what do you think? I love gardens and I am so grateful to have mine back now the kids are older I have one who is nearly 30 then I fell pregnant at the age of 39 with twins !!!!!!! They are now 16! It was hard work being a mum of baby twins at the age 40 !! Gardening is much easier I thought haha hope to hear from you soon ASAP Thanking you zillah xx🌱🍀🌺🌷💐🍃🌾🍂🍀☘️🍂🍁🌟

      Hi Zillah, Lobelia is a very pretty flower. Lobelia seeds are very tiny, it would be best to start them in a small container like I did in the video and then transplant them. My lobelia flats I either bottom water or mist the top of the container to keep the soil and seeds moist. Watering them the normal way could wash the seeds away and could possibly cover the seeds with ground. I do direct seeding of different plants with small seeds an my experience is the seeds don't always stay where you want them to or they get covered by ground when it rains, then they don't come up. Lobelia seeds need light to germinate you wouldn't want the seeds to get covered by dirt. Also when you do direct seeding with tiny seeds you have to plant a lot of them in the area to try to get enough to come up for what you want. I know you said that the lobelia reseeded itself for you along the pavement natural planted it there an there is a difference when we try to plant something and when nature plants something. I don't know where you are gardening at so I don't know if your climate is past the danger of frost yet, lobelia can't handle frost. I hope that answers your questions. Your welcome! Happy Gardening! Carrie

    I was actually going to plant them outside. Im in california so it is warm most of the time. Is that ok or do you recommend starting indoors only? This is my first time with Lobelias.

    • @carriesgardeningchannel856
      @carriesgardeningchannel856  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi, I'm sorry that it took me so long to get back to you I never got the message till now. You could try starting your lobelia outside as long as you get the germinating temps and the seeds are exposed to the light they should germinate. If it rains the seeds could get washed out of the soil or buried under the soil surface from the rain pounding on the soil. Where I am at I have a short growing season so to get the longest boom time for me I have to start them indoors. I hope that answers your questions. Thank you for asking them. Again I am sorry for not getting back to you sooner.

    • @carriesgardeningchannel856
      @carriesgardeningchannel856  5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Hi, You want to keep your soil moist but not soggy. It's not something you can put on a watering schedule, you'll have to feel the soil to see when it needs water. If the seeds didn't germinate yet use a mister bottle to keep the top moist so the seeds don't get pushed under the soil. I check my flats and seedlings everyday. I hope that answers your question. Happy Gardening! Carrie

    I live in Ohio. My lobelia planter which is bloomed beautifully all summer has turned brown with mostly no flowers. I hope I didn't mistake by cutting branches back by about half. Will it continue to grow and rebloom? It still has a lot of dead flowers on what's left. Advice?
