Hey everybody! Thanks for watching this video on "4 Music Nerd Albums You Need to Check Out". RateYourMusic.com is an incredibly helpful resource for discovering and learning about new music. Their charts/lists are FULL of stuff to read about and check out, the community ratings are fascinating, etc. But it can also be a vast, slightly intimidating world, and I wanted to give a few recommendations to ease you into it. Fishmans is just on another level
i love fishmans and their peak is very high but they really just have 1 classic and one good album imo

“Night Cruising” got me hooked into their music.
I mean Kate Bush is a legendary artist, it's not like people don't know about her
I'm 19 and know a fair few people who know king crimson, slint, godspeed, etc. The internet has given our generation more exposure to old/non mainstream music.
I’m a bit younger than you and i’ll be honest, RYM opened my eyes to so many artists and albums I’d never have listened to or heard of. A lot of my favorite albums I found off RYM
I feel like younger people tend to check out older music more than older people tend to check out new music.
not surprised about Slint, as they took Louisville slowcore national; other than Galaxie 500, who pretty much invented slowcore, Slint probably are the best known slowcore band there is (though of course Rodan and its one record and one tour is legendary--saw them in Cambridge, MA with Ruby Falls; yep, I saw Ruby Falls).

I grew up in a small town in Northern Canada.
There were bands you'd hear of and never actually hear their music.
Imagine trying to hear Robert Johnson in 1987... I waited for years.
Now you look it up,on the youtubes in 2 minutes

the idea of Kate Bush being niche elsewhere, especially with her most pop-y album is so bizarre to me
same, being from a Maltese family living in the UK full of Kate Bush fans I find it so strange the lack of recognition she receives outside of the UK. I believe it is partly due to the fact she didn't tour worldwide perhaps due to her fear of flying.
I'm not sure how niche it was. Granted, it wasn't being played on mainstream radio, but one of her songs from that album, Hello Earth, was on Miami Vice, which was HUGE at the time.
@@dillberrystew6205 Kate bush is very known and beloved elsewhere in Continental Europe, Japan, Australia and South America (specially in Brazil, Peru and Chile). Kate is seen as a very "avant gard" or niche only in USA and the video was made with this very North American point of view
@@Ignatius1972 I don't even think this is an accurate US perspective tbh. She was celebrated on MTV back in the 90's, especially after Utah Saints - Something Good blew up.
Kate Bush probably sold as many albums in the US as an average 100 artist, but over a lengthy period instead of the short spike it takes to "be popular" in the US.
Agreed, but I would say The Kick Inside or Red Shoes is her most pop-y

Hounds Of Love is a masterpiece, but The Dreaming deserves just as much love.
hounds of love is definitely more accessible but I think the dreaming was her peak creatively
It's more creative in terms of subject matter but it is her first time producing and it shows, personally I think The Sensual World and Lionheart deserve more love.
The Dreaming, Hounds of Love and the Sensual World is just a perfect streak of records for Kate
The Kick Inside and Never for Ever are great, too.

the otokotachino wakare is the greatest live album i’ve ever listened to in my life. everytime i listen to it. it’s an out of body experience

I don’t know who’s luckier, me who grew up and as a kid in 1963 was amazed at the constantly changing music scene, or you who has 65 years of rock music and all its offsprings at your fingertips. I was 9 when I got “Meet the Beatles”. I was 15 when “In the Court of the Crimson King” was in my collection. I bought every record I could find that had the Moog synthesizer, computer music, tape loops etc. I heard “How Many More Times” by Led Zeppelin being played in Sears’ record department. I was 19 when I became invested in Krautrock. Faust, Guru Guru, Tangerine Dream and others.
I collected records and made it to 6000 LP’s and 1000 45’s with 50% of them having picture sleeves. When my sons grew up I asked them if they were interested in the collection and the said HELL NO. They hated all those records. I eBayed the truly collectibles and gave the other 4000 away. But it was a blast. I don’t regret selling them.
I mean you got OG street cred, but new ones will more or less be able to live vicariously through stories like yours and I am sure those records found their way to some kids bedroom.
If my parents gave me tons of vinyl I wouldn't be saying "Hell No".
There’re 3 reasons for my sons to say no.
1. I had 70% in a temperature controlled storage unit and every few months I’d take one of them to help go drop some off and bring some back to go through.
2. My collection was 99% 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. They were born in 1980 & 1981. Oldies never interested them. One did take my collection of The Residents & Devo.
3. I got them into computers in the 90’s. They could build a PC better than I could and they were into bulletin boards, AOL and Napster when it arrived. No need for records or CD’s.
Record collecting in the 70’s & 80’s & 90’s was an entirely different game compared to today. Garage sales, flea markets, Thrift Store were it. The challenge of finding records for 25¢ to $2.00 was the goal and not very hard thanks to the invention of the CD. BY 1990 everyone was dumping vinyl. I’d never thought of paying premium price at a used record store. I had one rule which would never stand today, I would not buy a newly released record stamped as “Collector’s Edition”. What fun was that? But in 1977, the 10 year anniversary of “Sgt Pepper” I broke that rule. I believe it was also due to the upcoming release of “Sgt Pepper” the movie. The Sgt Pepper picture disc, “The White Album” “62-66” & “67-“70” were released on colored vinyl. Colored vinyl and picture discs were my addiction.
But I’m leaving out one key piece of history. I worked as a rackjobber for Handleman Records from 1975 to 1979 who serviced all Kmart, Gemco, TG&Y stores nationwide. I paid cost for those Beatle collectibles. That was all I bought from the company because I didn’t have any interest in 70’s Top 40. Such family stores did not cater to the off the wall stuff. They carried the big artists like Zeppelin & Sabbath but a big NO to Zappa, Fugs, Beefheart. But it was a huge YES to Shaun Cassidy, Donny & Marie, Leif Garrett, Debbie Boone, DISCO, lots of disco, Grease, Saturday Night Fever, Rick Dees Disco Duck. How degrading is that?
You are luckier, trust me. Im glad I can enjoy all these things but having so much content to stream makes it lose the impact it had on release. Like, I would listen to Crimson King today and enjoy it, but tomorrow I will be listening to Cocteau Twins, and the day after I will listen to Nas' Illmatic, and so on. Its good I can experience all of this, but the fact that it's so on the tip of my finger at any given moment makes it kind of lose the impact. It's obviously just my opinion, but I do think streaming services sort of kill the essence of being a real music enjoyer.

Love that Fishmans is getting more attention these days. Not only is the music incredible, but the story of the band, 98.12.28, and Shinji Sato’s death is one of the most moving stories in all of music imo
Edit: if anyone is interested in listening to 98.12.28, highly recommend listening to their discography before immediately jumping in. It only makes the album that much more rewarding
Kate Bush is one of the most well-known female solo artists in the UK, but I feel she lacks the recognition elsewhere since she did not tour worldwide perhaps due to her supposed fear of flying
I seem to recall that also, she doesn't like to play live because she feels that the recorded versions of her songs are the way they are intended and she feels that she's not able to recreate them live to her own liking. I think she's a pretty introverted person who really, REALLY, values her privacy and doesn't value fame.

As a Fishmans enjoyer, I recommend the band Polaris. It's japanese too, but less funkier and more slowcore/dream pop focused.

the said bassist that was leaving after 98.12.28 actually went on to form Polaris and that's how i found them! beautifulll songs and I love how they're all 7 minutes or longer, sucks they don't seem to have much recognition :/

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt on Slint and maybe My Bloody Valentine, especially in the US...but pretty much any kid raised with classic rock is going to know King Crimson. It's like the first thing a high school kid becomes obsessed with after they decide Pink Floyd is their favorite band. Even with that aside, they were a huge sample on one of Kanye's biggest hits.
So true hahah. Pink Floyd sent me into a prog rock spiral including King Crimson, Camel, Yes etc
Slint, MBV, King Crimson...... They are all basic bands when you are in high school and you discover /mu/core essentials
@@emmerick0 Is there a substantial number of kids who would know KC at any given high school? Like, more than 1 out of 100? Are there still that many 15 year-olds into Pink Floyd? The world of my youth is far behind me, and I'm interested to see out it would compare.

people often forget how incredible of a guitarist nick drake is. Listen to the john peel session EP. The live performances are nearly perfect and Nick's attitude is so in the moment and calm. He even plays rhythm guitar on Bryter Layter and outshines the lead flute player.

please do more of these! i'm pretty deep in the music community, but some albums (like pink moon for example) seem so hard to conquer, so inaccessible, so it's cool to hear someone talk about it in this way. And i actually never heard of the sam cooke live album, but i'l definetley check both of them out!
You just gotta be in a certain mood you know, like if your brain craves melodies there's no fighting it, it's what I learned.
tbh I have no idea how Pink Moon is inaccessible in any way, at it's core it's just an acoustic album that is pure and wistful and beautiful. It's basically, obviously appealing. Or do you mean the furore and conversation around it is the intimidating part? There are plenty of classic albums that today require a lot of context or familiarity with the genre. Drake isn't one hehe
Five leaves left I believe is a better album than pink moon, and probably ‘more accessible’ if you can say that pink moon isn’t. I truly believe river man is one of the best songs ever made (check out the John peel version of this song on youtube)
Really? Pink Moon seems mellow enough to pass over you even if you aren't trying to engage with it critically. It's not Jandek or anything

My favorite music nerd album is The Glow pt.2 easily. The first 3 tracks are the greatest run in music history. It feels like happily relaxing in the summer near a lake at sunset with someone playing guitar, but it's distorted, corrupted, and deals with themes of suicide, loneliness, and going insane due to a breakup, but through nature and metaphors. Phil Elverum, the man behind the project, has this vulnerable, boyish voice that makes you feel everything he's singing about. The Moon has the best lyrics I have ever heard period, and the riff at the end of the title track is one of the best sounds ever.
Yea The Moon has the greatest lyricism I’ve ever heard in a song and probably my favorite song ever. That being said, Mount Eerie is still my favorite album by The Microphones. And my favorite album ever

Soundtracks is one of the least accessible Swans albums for a newbie. Ease them in with TGA or TBK at least

It's one of their most critically acclaimed albums, their most commercially successful album, the second highest rated Swans album on RYM, in RYM's Top 200 albums of all time, and the recipient of Melon Man's 10 rating (a rating that only 4 other albums received that decade). That to me sounds like a classic (or at least a future classic).
RYM genuinely changed my life a bit. I think I had been aware of it's existence since I was 13. I remember going around the city in my incredibly cheap chinese headphones, listening to Marvin Gaye, Talk Talk and Spiritualized. I don't think I could ever relive the experience of pure euphoria coming in the form of tiny soundwaves from the incredibly quiet speaker in my headset. I'd listen to 5 albums a day... And relisten them over and over... I almost feel like I've heard everything by now, even though I am clearly aware I haven't, because in less than a month I'll be celebrating my 16th birthday.
Charts on RYM are really deceiving, by the way. Topsters in a genre might be good, but where I found this website most useful was the Artist's page. I would've never discovered some of my favorite albums had I not clicked on "Jorge Ben", "Auktyon", "Thinking Fellers..", "Animal Collective"...etc... Please try to explore a great musicians' less appreciated works.
One album in particular I've discovered on the RYM charts and not really seen discussed anywhere else (at least among most English-speaking communities) is Clube da Esquina, a Brazillian MPB album. I don't understand any of the lyrics, but the guitars, string arrangements and singing are so evocative and full of emotion to me it transcends language and the some of the tracks almost sound like proto dream pop with its echoey production. Apparently its a very important album in the musical history of Brazil, so its nice that sites like RYM can sometimes bring non-English music or relatively obscure titles to some global prominence they deserve but not otherwise have.
Yess it's a very important album here in Brazil! If you like it, it's worth it to check out these albums from the musicians who worked on Clube da Esquina:

Milton Nascimento - Travessia
The first two ones have a lot of progressive/psychadelic rock influences mixed with traditional brazilian music
@@djgaaabrieu Huh I'll see about getting around to listening to their solo works. Btw what do you think of Os Mutantes? I heard Kurt Cobain was a big fan of them. Also Milton's voice is so impossibly angelic its insane.

I've been a KateFan for decades and I have All Her Stuff, ever since she was on SNL with "Rolling the Ball" in '75.

I have you to thank for, good sir, for showing me how wonderful 98.12.28 really is. Saw it on your best albums from every year I've been alive list and fell in love with it. It's the kind of thing I would NEVER find out on my own. So thank you very much and keep on with the good work. You're inspiring me to broaden my horizons in music and even to share my opinions with the world, something I never thought I'd do.
Damn, Long Season in the last live version is absolutely insanely beautiful. It's something divine almost. Fishmans are like the happy japanese version of Radiohead
Hounds of Love never gets old. It balances synth-pop, art pop and experimentation that influences lot of artists until today. Probably one of my favorite albums of all time.

Discovering Kate Bush's music 5 years ago was one of the best decisions I ever made.
She's probably my favorite artist of all time.
It makes me happy to see her on this list along with Nick Drake who is another favorite of mine.
The Kate Bush album is one of my all-time favorites.
I hope John Fahey is on the list somewhere. It probably wouldn’t be as popular because it’s only acoustic guitar, but he’s the most underrated guitar player I’ve ever heard. America is an insane album, he really gives his guitar a voice and livens it to the point where you don’t even realize that a guitar is all you’re listening to.

One of my Dad's favourite songs back then used to be Running up That Hill (much to the dismay of my Mom ^^) and I share his feelings for it! It still, albeit rarely, gets played on one radio station here in Germany that exclusively plays 60s, 70s and 80s and everytime it does come on while I'm at work I catch myself humming along :)
Genius is used too often, but Kate Bush is at the top table.

Kate Bush' Jig Of Life, 'never never say goodbye to my part of your life'. The B-side of Hounds Of Love is a story about a woman drowning at sea at night, going under in Under Ice, Waking The Witch, Watching You Without Me. Jig Of Life is where her old self is imploring her not to give up. And then she finds her way back to life in the stunning Hello Earth and Morning Fog. Hounds Of Love is not about hits or weirdness for weirdness sake; it's all the multiple layers and emotional depth that make it such a timeless beloved classic.
Agree, there’s so many gems on Side 2. I love side 1 more, it’s basically perfect, but side 2 really grows on you. Lots of beautiful quieter moments that hit you at unexpected times after the “weird” moments have become normal.

Hey man, since you're open to listening to non-english music, I'd be interested in seeing your thoughts on bands like Dewa 19, Dir En Grey, WITCH and Sun City Girls (they're American, one of the members was the drummer in The Velvet Underground, but they write songs in Arabic, Hindi and Indonesian).
There's a lot of influential and interesting music with bands that have very interesting stories and histories that I don't see being talked about a lot in the internet music community and it would be great if someone who has a platform to introduce them to a larger audience.
What an amazing video, that Fishmans live album and Bingka Moon are among two of my most played albums of all time.
I live in the US, Male, 53 years old... KATE BUSH has been at the tiptop of my very most favorites since the Hounds of Love came out, and I've bought all of her work on Tape and CD!
Thanks for giving some love to Nick Drake . His music is timeless. Bryter Layter was My favorite.

Long season (studio ver) is tied as my favorite album of all time, seeing fishmans introduced to new people is pretty nice. Hopefully the new audience isn't as cancerous as the new radiohead and caretaker fans.

Hounds of Love has amongst the album personnel 3 of the heaviest hitters in Irish traditional dance music (a highly complex musical form and niche genre): John Sheahan of The Dubliners fame on whistles and fiddle (considered one of the best living Irish fiddlers); Dónal Lunny, a fret player and producer very famous in the genre, who also produced Kate’s stunning rendition of Mná na hÉirreann, a song in the Irish language written and composed in a traditional style by the great 20th century musicologist and champion of traditional Irish music, Seán Ó Riada (if I’m not mistaken, Kate’s mum was a native Irish speaker); and finally, Liam O’Flynn, widely regarded as one of the greatest uilleann pipers of the 20th century and protege of the great Seamus Ennis (the Irish bagpipes, the uilleann (ILL-un) pipes, are actually a very recognizable sound that many people don’t know about but often still know the sound of them, they’re a wild instrument, run a quick Google, especially if you like anything steampunk).

I blind bought Live at the Harlem Square Club after listening to a Sam Cooke compilation of some gospel stuff and his pop hits. All I can say is wow. To think execs thought it was not fit to be sold and it was hidden away for decades is something I will never understand. What a snapshot of an artist in a place and time. Incredible performance. Energy level is at maximum. Wish there was video.

Ha interesting. I've been a member of RYM for a decade and a half (more now? I dunno) and have gone through the all time lists countless times and until now I don't think I ever noticed Fishmans on the list. Funny how even a music nerd like myself that's been around this site for so long somehow missed this artist. I'm a fan of the other artists/albums and have been for a long time although I only recently also finally listened to that classic Sam Cooke live album for the first time. What a legend and definitely one of the great soul live albums.
Anyways, thanks for making me aware of this band. :D
Long Season is one of my favorite albums of all time
Kate is my absolutely favourite musical artist of all time. I realize that no one asked. It always kills me that so few people know about Kate as I have gone out of my way to collect even the Japanese Fruitopia ads and no one I know even know one of her songs.
I honestly think you underestimate just how popular In The Court Of The Crimson King still is.
Although you're right about the general population, the younger generation is much more in tune with this kinda stuff than you'd expect. I've seen people at my school wearing Danial Johnston shirts

I’ve been a music nerd my entire life. I’ve never heard of rate your music before. I generally don’t like that kind of large community, I prefer to discover my own likes and dislikes in music. This means I’m very late on trends, but fuck, I love some really strange music that I doubt I would have discovered if all I was hearing about is how great King Crimson and Kate Bush are.
Hey a good band I recommend is “the frights” I’m not sure if you’ve heard of them but, “submarines” “crust bucket” and “tungs” are great songs to listen too. Anyway love the content thank you and have a great day.
