    I think the first episode I saw featuring the “Jelly Donuts” was the one where they met Snap and they were properly referred to as Rice Balls. Rice has been my favorite food since I was little, I love almost any kind of it, so I’ve always wanted to try an Onigiri

    As a 90s kid, I grew up in a very meat-and-potatoes kind of culture when it comes to food. Rice was not common in our house. When the "jelly donuts" came up, I don't think I even considered that they were anything else; probably thought they looked a bit funny, but it still made me want a donut!

  • @pikachu0Z

    So many edits and changes for one food item, wouldn't be surprised if OLM saw these and decided to keep riceballs out of the anime all together since we haven't seen anymore since Advenced Generation.

    They’d do it for YuGiOh too. I vividly remember this scene from YuGiOh GX where a woman brings Jaden and the gang what are obviously rice balls. But instead they say PASTRIES and they say it multiple times because they really want kids to now that these 🍙 are indeed PASTRIES.
    It can be cringe, but it’s also so funny that I can’t be mad at it 😅

    Whats funny is that most of this stuff is the pokemon company's fault, people love to blame 4kids, but according to several people at the company it was the original anime studios who wanted stuff like this change, so japan.... wanted to censor rice balls to get more money in america

      Source?

    • @pinkraven7043
      @pinkraven7043 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Slight correction. It was the American network that these anime were broadcasted on that demanded a lot of changes. On the other hand, Japan didn’t make some things easier either. Ever wonder why a lot of the Japanese text in the YuGiOh anime are just suddenly gone? According to one producer, it’s because the files of the anime they got from Japan already had most of that text gone. It is also true that, allegedly, the Japanese producers were trying to lean more away from the Japanese culture references because of how universally popular Pokemon was getting.
      For those seeking a source- you can find a lot of videos and interviews done with people who worked with 4Kids on TH-cam, just look them up.
      And I mean look for legitimate interviews or panels featuring past 4Kids staff, voice actors, or content creators who actually do their research. Not people who are putting 4Kids in a bad light solely based on the same anime clips and memes.

    theey are not suppose to have too much flavor because rice ball are just there to fill you up, and make you healthy, because onigiri is a health food(pretty much most japanese dishes are health foods when you get into the lesser known stuff like Zarusoba, Somen, green tea(not the sugary stuff, the real traditional japanese green tea) Japanese foods has many varieties unlike a lot of western cuisines), and the best onigiris are usually the ones with salmon, Unagi, Tuna, or Cod roe.

    When it comes to replacing the rice balls with sandwiches and crackers, I have a theory about this.
    Those were some of the last episodes 4Kids dubbed and I'm guessing they new that their days with the show were numbered. My theory is they decided to replace the rice balls in the dub because it would be a large business expense they could write off for tax purposes before they lost the franchise.
    Also, the first instance of rice balls getting referred to as a donuts happened back in Here Comes the Squirtle Squad.
