  • On the eve of South Africa’s national elections, Chief Rabbi Dr Warren Goldstein had an in-depth conversation with renowned political analyst, Dr Frans Cronje - whose cutting-edge thinktank, the Social Research Foundation, has been running a daily tracking poll that is the go-to place for much of the country’s election analysis.
Find out everything you need to know about the elections - the different possible and probable outcomes, coalition options, and what we can expect moving forward into the future.
Gain a deeper understanding of the country’s current trajectory and future outlook, including the various socio-economic challenges and the political landscape. It’s not about optimism and pessimism - it’s about gaining the knowledge and insight we need to assess the various issues we’re facing as a country, in an informed way.
The SRF employs real-world analysis and hard data to provide authoritative insights on South Africa that local and international media refer to often.
This episode “What’s next for SA? Dr Frans Cronje on elections 2024 and beyond” is the latest in a series confronting key issues in South Africa, aimed at providing analytical tools and a rational framework for facing the future.

I think part of the government’s initial success was that the sanctions against South Africa were lifted. The majority of South Africans (of all races) were happy and hoping that life would get better for all. Businesses from other countries were investing in South Africa. Sadly, over the years, all that initial optimism got a bit frayed at the edges.
I really hope that this time we get a government that does it’s best for all South Africans. Why can’t we have a party that has a Black, Coloured, Indian and a White person sharing the leadership? So only policies that are fair to all get put in place.
(Except there should be 1 old lady who gets the final say in everything. Colour not important, just old and crotchety.)

Dr Frans Cronje is obviously an incredibly intelligent man but sometimes I wonder if he is too optimistic. Zimbabwe went through a similar process, In the 90s when they were doing well support for Zanu PF was strong. As support for Zanu PF fell off they began to bring in extremist policies (think NHI, expropriation bills) that ultimately led to the downfall of Zimbabwe. Zimabwe's democratic system worked well until it didn't.
Remember absolute power corrupts absolutely. I can't help but think that ANC leaders who have been on the gravy train for too long have too much to lose.

It’s mostly true. I think about 89% of all South Africans want the same things, a job so they can support their families (thanks guys because you do most of the supporting family weightlifting, and don’t whine and moan about it).
We all have the same slightly daft sense of humour and are not hostile towards each other.
Our support for sport is stupid. Except for Cricket, that’s a different story altogether, I’m working on inventing a cricket bat that attracts the cricket ball and then forcefully blasts it out of the field for 6. The other countries’ cricket teams will never take another wicket and trying to catch the ball in flight will result in 4 broken fingers and a swollen thumb.

Standing always with Israel. Professor John C Mubangizi, Dean: Faculty of Law, University of the Free State
South Africans are sick and tired of corruption. They are angry, frustrated and despondent. And they have every reason to be. South Africa has many problems: crime, unemployment, poverty, gender-based violence, inequality, low economic growth and now - in common with many other countries - COVID-19. The list goes on and on. What makes corruption the biggest threat among all these is that it cuts across all of them and impacts on their gravity in different ways.

I would very much like to ask about these Islamists who have dug themselves into SA including financially, they have imbedded themselves in business such as CR MTN and such. My concern is not the financial but the ideology and antesemitsm.

Mkhulu Credo Mutwa on his last birthday before he died said, South Africa will never prosper as long the government and private sector dont recognize or include the indigenous tribal chiefs, Kings, Queens and healers of the this land. The bloodshed was never cleansed.

I disagree the Mbeki era was good. All those advances were had at the cost of cutting maintenance in SOEs from rail to Eskom., setting up the disaster we see now.

Thank you for the insight. Just a point on the community inputs at min 57. Post 94 responsibility was placed on the government to provide. However on a community level the responsibility of self-improvement and maintenance, should and ultimately is the responsibility of that community. The mindset change required for that shift in responsibility, needs to be top down and will be incredibly painfull for those communities. Considering the broadly held notion that government is the primary provider.
