I am not just being nice! You demo a Metal pedal better than anyone. When buying any dirt pedal one needs to hear a few chords in the style played at a medium tempo. Often Metal players show off their shredding and speed. One ends up having no idea what the tone of the pedal is. Zero!!! Your idea of a Metal pedal comparison is brilliant. I for one will steer my Metal guys over to it. I have hundreds.

Mostly, fir a *demo* it needs to be played through the full range if settings. Most people 'demo' stuff, by tweaking out a sound they like and banging on it.

I own the overdrive. It's pretty bad... You can get it to sound sorta half-decent if you play around with the knobs for a bit, but ultimately it's just a whole lot of noise and not a lot of actual tone. Not to mention that the static when it's idle is absolutely insane.

Those are reworked MetalZones that go from 11 to 20 :P
They sound bad for most people at first, because there is just too much gain and they are a bit vintagy voiced to contradict that, but you can make them sound good with just what and how you play.

This is a great thing to see pop up. I've been following the Afford-A-Board series because I'm trying to build my first one. Been playing over 20 years, but I've always just used what I can get from the amp. Which probably makes me an underachiever. When I had tried to use pedals, I was going from guitar into the pedals and then into the amp. There was no rhyme or reason for anything being set up as it was, and predictably, it was the shittest sound ever. For the longest time, I hated on the tube screamer pedal becuase I had no idea what it was trying to replicate or how to use it. I was basically being the guy who thought his strat was crap becuase of the 60 cycle hum.
Why this is really interesting is because I still have a Danelectro Daddy-O pedal that I want to not hate, but I totally hate. I have to be doing something wrong. Any thoughts on the Daddy-O?

I have all the 8 pedal of this line. The Metal is the winner. The (slap) Echo is charmming, and the 600ms Delay is useful too. The chorus and flanger are a bit weak. But they are cute and kind of collectible.

I picked up a fab flange back in 2011, 2012, somewhere around there. The enclosure is trash, switch failed within a year, and I'm pretty gentle on my gear. I removed it's guts and re-housed it in a proper all metal enclosure with a much more durable footswitch, and while I was at it, tapped into the circuit and made a couple of fun mods to it. 8-9 years later, still works like a charm. I'd imagine they're all similar to most super affordable pedals these days, okay circuits in garbage enclosures.

Metal - DOD Grunge (reworked Metalzone) without bass control, Overdrive - based on TS9 without tone bleed so you need to adjust it along the gain, it is a bit boring but functional, Fuzz - no idea, but on my gear it was more in dirty overdrive range and I like it for that.
I have Fuzz, Distortion and Echo. Distortion I think had circuit similar to Maxon DS830 (Vox v830 seems similar too, and you can find the general idea behind the circuit in some DOD), it sounds ok, but bit generic and has narrow range of sound. Echo is just generic pt2399 you can add time pot to. What I dont like about whole series is that the buffer cuts out a bit too much and you cant feel/tell the settings unless you look in closely in good light. But there is nothing wrong with the sound, good starter effects, used they are dirt cheap, saw them going for as little as 3.5usd. I actually would like that Fuzz in a Cool Cat format (Cool Cat Fuzz and Fuzz v2 are completely different).

The best affordaboard pedals from Danelectro are the "Food Series ". They are no longer available, but if you can get your hands on some of them, they are great. • @FromWitchSide
      @FromWitchSide 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree, but also a warning, food ones are often very specific sounding - they are no go for people who want just a generic versatile overdrive or distortion. Grilled Cheese Distortion is a good example of that, but I do like it a lot - th-cam.com/video/l_Bh5YA1Qs8/w-d-xo.html (you need a certain output to get that sound)

Don't have the Fab metal...or any metal pedals...
But I do have the Fuzz and the overdrive.
I really can't do anything with the Fab overdrive...I might just mod it in the future.
The Fab fuzz isn't so bad when you roll off the volume on the guitar and clean up the signal a little bit.
But it still rates higher than the DOD Flashback Fuzz...which I'm currently saving in case I need a blunt object.

I got the Fab fuzz thinking it was the same as the coolcat fuzz and was sorely mistaken it doesn't sound a thing like the coolcat it's more of like a dirty boost then a fat thick fuzz like the coolcat so I use it as a boost for there french toast octave fuzz that has barely any output so I set the gain low on both and I can get the french toast up to and past unity I also got the Fab 600 Ms delay which is pretty decent for the price thanks for demos on the overdrive and metal pedal I've also owned the pastrami overdrive and the black coffee metal distortion and both of the Fab pedals just sound like recased versions of those not bad but not great

The OD is supposed to sound real good with a tele bridge pu.

True. I had one that I used a lot with a Tele. I gave it as a birthday gift to a friend of mine (and regret it now hahaha)

That fuzz is already buffered, so not really necessary to put it first, unless it's just your preference.

They all sounded kinda rough to me, like they were all working from the same circuit with only minor changes (granted the metal pedal did sound a bit different to the first two) and no way to dial back the basic tone they were all based on. They reminded me of bad built in effects you find on early cheap solid state amps, in fact that's the perfect way to describe them, they sound solid state buzz saw whereas most pedals are trying to sound more natural.

Check out the Joyo Voodoo Octave Fuzz! For under 40 dollars, I've been able to get some pretty cool sounds out of it.

Oh no, he went down the FABbit hole...
Seriously, though, I'm surprised at how much fuzz you got out of the fuzz pedal. I ordered one that must have been broken, because all I could get out of it was a soda pop fizzle sound. I had to return it.
The overdrive is actually kinda pleasant sounding. The metal pedal, as you can hear, has an overwhelming amount of treble output. It's a chore to get through each song I use it for, and I have the tone backed off as much as I can without ruining the sound. The FAB distortion has a tone to it that's great for neck pup picking, but still too much treble. I don't play any louder than maybe 70 db, but my ears ring after every practice. The treble is just obnoxious.
I'm still going to trade up for some Behringers. Same innards as Boss pedals; no point in wasting money just for metal housings. I really like the sound of their pedals. I've never gotten as much sustain out of any other distortion pedals I've tried.

I was thinking the same. And I've had mine on the road from coast to coast for over two decades and its never let me down. Durable as heck.

Their Echo reverb is quite good at slapback.

Ryan you need to track down a Fab echo, great slap back and easily modded for a delay knob for longer delay. I've had one on my board for at least a decade.

For 90% of the guitar community, inexpensive = bad pedal, and expensive = good pedal. Tone of the pedal doesn't matter at all.

It seems the lessons to take away from this is that gear people are stupid and tone is subjective.

No use for the other 2 but the metal pedal needs to go on the afordaboard.🤘
When you had all 3 pedals on it seriously sounded like the first band I was in 40 years ago.

Where can I post a photo of the #afordaboard that your channel inspired? I am breadboarding a few different Fuzz circuits to find the one I like and the Kmise Chorus is on order. You are "Making Guitars Great Again". Thanks
