After 4 years of this video, it benefit to me just this week. Following the guide I have successfully rescued my rolleiflex 3.5c. The shutter speed is now identical with my Nikon D610. I think the main challenge of the work is 1) rusty screw that take effort to remove. 2) when you clean the shutter with oil, and try to flex the gear by hand, you will easily displace the pins pressing those gear, if the pins are not in the original places, it will not press the gear and the mechanic will not work. 3) when you reinstall the shutter gear mechanic, make sure the tip at the right side is not blocking the rotation of the gear beside. Suggest to take a video of how the mechanic work before dismantling the shutter gear component . I think the job is easier than I think, after fixing it I am very comfortable as I can live with the camera and maintain it myself in the rest of my life. Please let me know if there is any difficulties on following the video

Well Harry, you are right some of my early'er film's was way tooooo fast...., but, depending on the task, I will now and then make the motion-lapse film.

For those of you looking to get those dental instruments, the first one shown (with the orange band) is known as a "flat plastic" & I think the second one shown (with the blue band) was the "Hollenback carver" :)

I agree with everyone else. Fine job! However, this was one of the reasons I changed to the Mamiya TLR. Seiko shutters seem much more reliable. But I can't argue with the cachet of the Rollei and its optics. Damn fine cameras.

My older Rollei automat seems to need the film wind crank returned to the recessed position before the shutter will trip; that might have helped with your testing at the middle mark. Or yours might be different..nicely made video. It gives me the wisdom to not try this myself on my cameras!
Hi Kenneth, Good Video, I managed to clean the slow times and they run again. Though something is strange: one second and half second work perfectly, the sirring noise is like it should. the 1/4, 1/8, 1/15 run without the sirring noise and are quite fast about like the1/125. The 1/30 and shorter then are ok again. Any Idea what could cause that?

Hi Mr Mike. Is it possible to approach the Aperture mechanism without completely dismantling the shutter mechanism? I am trying to correct misaligned aperture blades but the camera is working perfectly otherwise. I wouldn't want to break anything else while I do this
If the aperture blades is out of alignment, the best way is still to disassemble the shutter and correct the aperture blades, and at the same time clean the shutter blades and the aperture blades with Isopropylalcohol 70-99 % so they are completely free from oil and old grease, they have to run completely dry, then clean the self timer an the slow gear and other important parts.
@@mikeno62 I'll probably hold off on it. In my current expertise level I wouldn't be comfortable doing that without the risk of messing something else up. I did easily tackle a Nikon series E 100mm 2.8 aperture and focus ring relubrication very easily from your recent video though. Thanks for your reply.
So my grandfather's camera came to me and the slow shutter speeds were slow...l So I opened it up as per these instructions and it was an adventure. I thought of course it would be easy peasy but I had a struggle to get the slow gear mechanism back in place. There are 2 tiny springs which want to slip out of position and once I got those back in position the 1 second time was working fine. Now I've put it back together and have a new problem... the winding handle is really stiff. this became progressively worse as I was winding the shutter during the repair. Any thoughts on the why of that?

Is there anyway to lubricate the slow speeds without strip down ? Could you remove the lens, and remove the inner ring without removing the entire front plate ? You could drop a little naptha or watch makers oil in through here ? Is this possible
Sorry Ben, there is only the "hard way", it will say that you will need to open the camera and take out the slow speed, then give it a good bath in Isopropylalcohol 10min or so, then use compress air and GENTLY blow out the rest of Isopropylalcohol. Use a very thin oil, and ONLY!!! on the axle ends, then give it some good movement and wipe away the rest of oil and re-install it again and adjust to correct exposure.

Hi Mikeno62. I have started to resemble my breakdown. The shutter is working nicely now. I have a situation where I am trying to reinstall the part that you didn’t know the name of. The first part that goes back on the has the little spring, that has the little teeth that has to align with the small wheel with the teeth. When i remove the small wheel, i can advance the camera, when I reinstall the small wheel, I cant not advance the camera. Feels like it stuck. There is something with the realignment of the part with the wheel that i am missing.. any advice from yourself, or anyone else out there, will be much appreciated! Thank you for the demos! Why dont you check other speeds? Sometimes when you put shutter back 1/15 and 1/30 are too fast and need adjustment, but not sure how to adjust them. Can you tell?

Thank's, well there are some differences in the different type of the Rolleiflex's and of course there are also different shutter's, and I think there are a different shutter in the 3.5F than the 2.8D. I have one Rolleiflex 2.8D that I would like to try to repair, so there will be another video about, how to repair the shutter in my camera sooner.
How do you get information about the cameras that will fix like, how to know the position of the screw under the leather cover? (it looks like leather!)
The best way to know how thing's work is to disassemble it, and the best is when a thing is not working, or somebody say it can not be repaired. Then there is a possibility to open it, without a risk that you have to deliver the thing back to a person, and on the other hand learn how you maybe could repair the thing. So I have spend A LOT's time disassemble cameras, lenses, tape recorders, turntables, and other electronic and mechanical stuff during the most of my life, just to see what's inside..., without a service / repair manual, JUST many many try and error's.... Of course today it's more easy to find some repair manual's, but for many brand's, there are NO service / repair manual at all... It had give me a lot's of knowledge in, how thing's is assemble. In the case of repair old cameras just like The Rolleiflex I simply began with some NOT working cameras found very cheap on Fleemarket's. Hope it makes sense.. Cheers Kenneth
Hey Mike. On the slow gear mechanism, by the adjust screw is a small spring. Mine currently sticks out and can puncture my finger. What is the proper position for this spring?
Wow, you're a butcher ;) How can you not cover both the viewing and unscrewed taking lens during the repair? Also, do you really consider this amount of oil a "small drop" ?

I put a strong magnet in a cloth and slide it around the floor to find all the small screws I drop :)
I actually in my workshop found one of those very strong magnet, from a big old speaker... Now it's time to hunting small screws ;-)

I have a Rollei 3.5F. It is not as good a picture taker as the wonderful Zeiss Super Ikonta B. It had one of the sharpest lenses ever manufactured!

Those shutter blades get stuck once every two years from lack of oil.
Exactly opposite - they get stuck from using oil. Shutter blades are not supposed to use any oil.
