- How to open up the Compur shutter on a Kodak Retina type 118 to repair it's shutter timing which is so often defect. The part that decides the timing is called the retard gear. In this video, we extract it, look at how it works and put everything together.
This is a helpful video - but as many have said - the pliers are a very bad idea! First problem is the risk of slipping scratching the component you are gripping - or the lens - and the second is the risk of distorting it. It is essentially a thin brass ring, it doesn’t take much to damage it. The best tool to use is a friction tool - just a rubber stopper or block that you press onto the surface - it grips by friction without damaging anything.
This is true! Good point. I use a friction tool often. It would be a better choice here than the pliers.
Today's digital cameras are great technology , but to see the hidden craftmanship under that lens just blows my mind ! The complexity involved was the result of the thought processes of so many technicians over the span of centuries ! A lot of it came from the watchmakers for sure. Automation wasn't there , so the workers had to assemble these camera parts manually. Incredible ! From taking out metal ores from the mines to a shining new camera in the palm of the hand- the history of human innovations in science and technology can be captured in all those steps involved !
And only in the last few years has the last leaf Shutter company shut down.. "Copal"

Beautiful video. A finer tweezer, (or even two) can help you position screws and springs more easily. Anyway, you know that, because I see you are the kind of man with two right hands. Congratulations!

I just watched you slip with those pliers and scratch the lens housing. This is a terrible idea!!! DO NOT use pliers. Use a plain rubber stopper and press it down on the front rim of the lens and apply counter-clockwise pressure. That's all you need to do.

Also, I see that would be cool to clean the camera, how you would recommend? Any options to fix front eye finders glass? Looks broken. Thank you for answers 🙏

Thanks for the video. I have a Rolleicord having the same lens shutter. Regarding the time from 10:28 to 12:06, I noticed the gear moving in and out freely while you pushing with you right hand. But my one doesn't move even I push it hard. Please could you advise? Thanks1

Hey, I got a Retina 117 and the little knob next to the winding knob is stuck and can only do a half rotation. I guess I need to remove the top housing but I have no idea how to do it and I also dont want to destroy something, could you help on that please? I really need help on that :)
I hope you will be able to fix it! I've never worked on a typ117, but you should be able to unscrew the big knobs on the left and right (the knob that connects to the cassette will need to have the cassette-side of the axle held back as you unscrew). The little knob probably is held down by a small set-screw. But as that is removed, the top plate should just come off. There may be a retaining screw under the knobs and/or viewfinder, too. @@vincentanno1997 try to clean off any old grease and regrease it. Look for any broken parts.

The complete inner mechanism of my Retina 117 is a bit oily and sticky. Can I clean that off or is that important for the mechanism to work?
It sounds like someone tried to oil it to make a sticky shutter not be sticky. These don't require grease except from some particular areas. I'd suggest you clean it.
@@Libsenth Okay thanks! Well I assume the camera wasnt opened since 1934, so it mightve gotten a bit dirty :P The thing I didnt understand though is how I can tune the retard gear, could you help me with that too? :)

Hey, coming back to this great video again! I have a rather similar Balda Ovus shutter right now and the shutter has problems to cock. How do I fix that? Plus, I took out the retard gear housing, cleaned and lubricated it and it worked perfectly. However, it just started to stop working at 1s again and again. Do you have any ideas maybe :/
Great Video, but how I have to fix the spring, because at my camera the times under 1/25 dont work corectly.
If your spring is broken, you must get a replacement spring.If it isn't broken, you just need to experiment until you get all times to work.
Are you saying that if shutter speeds above 1/25 seems this indicate a gummed up mechanism, rather than a broken spring, or is it hard to tell?
@@1981fitz Could be the gears that are used during slow speeds that is stuck. I solve that by dropping a drop of acetone from a injection needle, and start working the slow shutter speeds. Most of the times it works, but sometimes you need to leave the gear housing in acetone for a day..

I have that exact RETINA 118 model but so far the Compur Shutter works well except the 1 second is slow and I do not have that 'plunger' fitted as the shutter release -- my one is missing . I did a VIDEO about my 118 today with prints -- you can see it here ;
