The most ominous sound I can currently think of and surprised it wasn't included is a classic, cold war / nuclear air raid siren. It's instinctive to humans to induce utter fear.

Perhaps my memory is failing me, but sounds of upwards glissandi have been used to depict jumping in cartoons *way* before Mario even existed. I'm pretty sure Nintendo did not invent that. (OMG MUH NOSTALGIA)

Yeah, It's probably one of the most iconic nintendo sounds from consoles because everybody can identify a coin sound from mario or the "item obtained" sound from zelda.
They went obviously for few PS/XBOX sounds, but kinda shame they missed Dreamcast startup which was composed by technopop godfather, Ryuichi Sakamoto.

If I may try: You have a 'playful' phrase, utilizing 'the full range' of orchestral elements, even if they are simplified... You have the percussive Marimba, the digitized Horns and emulated Strings all at once, as the symbol G is drawn out. (Now pull out your GC and hold the "Z" buttons in various configurations ;) Classic, thanks for bringing it up.

The"AOL Dial-up" sound frustrated me so much. I got bad flashbacks just hearing it again..
It wasn't an "AOL dialup sound" at all. Your modem made that same sound no matter what service or ISP you were connecting to. (If it was recent enough. Earlier, lower-speed modems had simpler handshaking sequences.)

Oh, it was engineered. Just not for "product branding", which was what this video is about per its subtitle.
The reason for letting the user hear the sounds was that you would want to hear if you got a busy signal, or a SIT tone, or something else _other than_ the modem protocol handshake.

An example of skeuomorphism is the "green felt looking" texture that some early PC games and game packages used as a background. Actually having green felt on the top of your real, physical desk is not skeuomorphism.

I thought the THX sound was TERRIFYING when I was small.
Filomena Rocca Same, though tbh it still kinda does today. It's mainly cause, in my mind, it's synonymous with the movie Twister. I first saw it at a really young age & that movie is scary enough normally because Tornados are scary af as is, so little 5, or somewhere around there, year old me saw that and was thoroughly *TERRIFIED* and still to this day have slight PTSD with that movie. Oh, Jason X & the live action Resident Evil (first one) but those are different stories for another comment should one wish to inquire.

I think that they missed something pretty obvious in their descriptions: both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 start-up sounds are anticipatory. The "inhalation" for the 360 definitely, but the PS3 has something of a pun too: you literally tune right before you play.

Jezza O'Casey that's the point. Because the sounds, in most cases, were made using the science that they understand. It's more of a why the sounds make you feel a way.

At no point do they describe*why* the sounds make people feel that way. Sure, they commented on how some sounds were low, some were fast, but no actual psychological analysis like the title suggests. Trash video.

The AOL one is a 56k modem handshake. The 14.4 handshake ends at 21:13-21:14. That last part if I remember right is the 56k part of the handshake. (It's been 20 years since I ran a BBS) Sounds like a US Robotics modem versus a Hayes modem.

I love the new Dolby Atmos logo sound. I remeber sitting in my first Atmos Movie and the Atmos Intro went off and the whole cinema was dead fucking silent until one person whispert: "Man, THX is dead..." :D
5:50 trully a sound I'll never forget, firstly, the descending tone bringing you into a state of laser focus. When I played the ps1 in my living room at this very moment, everyone in the room would look at the screen, even if for a tenth of a second! then, there it was! With a "heavenly" fade to white, the logo reveals it's "wings" has the tone releases a chord so powerful, yet so peaceful with it's intentions (you were about to play your favorite game after all) accompanied by what resembles the twinkles of stars to further elevate you in a state of another world. Then, in the final moments, the screen turns to black again, a chord of twinkles are played, revealing the Playstation logo, has a mildly mysterious set of notes are played, resembling the potential discovery of something unknown and uncharted, leaving you in a state of wonder, just like a movie would hold you in suspense when you hear the "tun-tun-tuuuuuun".This intro made me feel focused, amazed, intrigued, frightened but determined to discover what this world had to offer me. All of this shown, in the first 10 seconds, as soon as you pressed the "on" button. Truly my favorite tune and one I have ever had the pleasure of earing.
Good audio design is an extremely overlooked feature in many tech products. Microsoft had the right idea when they hired Brian Eno to compose the Windows 95 startup.

This video was a LOT better than the videogame sounds two-parter, these guys had a lot more analysis to talk about and actually broke down the logistics of it rather than the four sound designers in the other two vids that just screwed around a bit. I like these two a lot, I hope they come back!
This is so fantastic, but I wish they would've talked longer about each sound.
In a recording session, my friends and I talked for about an hour about when iPhone added reverb to some of their sounds, and we were discussing how many convolution scenarios you could've approached it with.

FLUXXEUS Apple has some the best sounds for inducing a thought or mood. Steve Jobs invested a lot of time and money into making the consumer experience satisfying and it shows. These are some of the most recognisable sounds simply because people want to remember them.

7:05 I recognize the sound but couldn't remember that it's by Intel. Apparently I'm not part of the 90%. I'd say that the Nokia tune was the most recognizable out of all these.
Box0rz you probably don't watch tv or ad breaks at all. Many computer makers uses this sound at the end of their commercials to let you know it has "Intel Inside"

Well, I guess 90% of people recognize the sound but a lot less can link it to Intel.
I remember it sounding different when I was really little. Like, the four notes at the end were just played on a marimba or something with no harmonization like there is now. They also added another higher pitched note to the end of the four notes when I was in grade school and that lasted maybe up until 2013 or so. The variant with the high note at the end I'd always hear in Dell ads in the early 2000s during their "Dude, you're getting a Dell" campaign. Those ads have stuck with me for SO many years.

1:59 I worked for AOL back in those days doing dialup support... I used to write customized AT Command strings (the “talking” the one guy talks about) for different modems... I remember tuning my own dialup to get 7kB/s and thinking how blazingly fast that was, now I have over 10MB/s...

Yes, that specific part of the sequence only plays when both the calling and receiving modem report 56k compatibility. The specific way that that part sounds varies wildly depending on the manufacturer.

The AOL dial up sound was one of my favorites. Not sure why, but growing up I loved dial up modem noise.
"AOL dialup" Not just AOL, all dial-up as the guy says, and not branding, it's the actual conversation. The blog post and chart that the one guy mentions is fantastic.
The Mac startup sound is based on the last chord in “A Day in the Life” by the Beatles. Too bad they missed that

Alexander Marinissen they did tho, they talked about the “breath” in the Xbox and the bubbles of Skype, the back and forth of the iPhone message. They can’t tell you how they were designed because that isn’t psychology nor were they there.

Hearing the SEGA intro followed immediately by the PS1 startup legitimately gave me goosebumps and returned me to my 90's childhood.

The Skype hangup sound also resembles a phone receiver hitting the main phone body, causing the bell to ring a bit. Something people born before the 90s remember ; )

I want the purpose of the sound explained.
So this are all digital sound. I was wondering for years if the sound you hear when you open a can like coke, beer etc. Is designed or just happens to be as it is per „accident“.
Cause the sound is immediatly remembered with a nice beverage to enjoy.

Considering how many analog sounds like car doors are designed in great depth and how the Coke bottles have been meticulously designed as well, I’d expect the sound of opening a can to have been tweaked in some way, too.
The PlayStation 1 one always seemed like it took forever to get through, I just wanted to play Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater okay! But now, I love it so much. It’s just so iconic. You know exactly what it is when you hear it.
The Skype sound still makes me happy. People are saying that they don't like it, but for me it's a very fond memory. My dad used to leave for months or even a whole year when I was younger, and hearing that Skype sound meant he was calling. I still get happy when I hear it even though I don't use Skype anymore
