My installation instruction will now vary depending on which version you received. I'm not sure why BF made this change, but it clearly didn't take the consumer into consideration.

Thank you for this video. It helped me so much during the installation of my cover. The instructions that came with it were confusing and lacked a lot to be desired. The only thing I will add is that be sure to install the strap hold down clips before putting the cover on the bed of the truck. It is much easier that way. Thanks again! Much appreciated!

Nice! Glad to help - I heard that BakFlip might have slightly changed the cover towards the cab now for the 3rd gen models.
Just used your video to install my MX4. Very nice step by step process. Just an added note, make sure when installing the rails that they are straight instead of the rails sagging inward. Install the fasteners that secure the folded panels when 2/3rds folded before putting on the tonneau. Those were a pain to put on with the tonneau on the truck.

Video helped me install it. Only problem was the 90 degree weather in Florida making everything too hot to touch.
Yeah, it gets the same way here in SoCal! Always have to do a test touch before I lean on the bed!

Thanks Ryan! I never installed the tubes...and after a few rains and a few car washes, I probably won't. Very little water gets in my bed, so nothing to warrant drilling into my bed further. One precaution is that on the driver side, the existing hole is really close to the gas tank/hoses, so be careful

Hey just wondering if you know, are the 2nd gen Tacoma covers interchangeable with the 3rd gen if theyre the same bed length?
I checked on www.tonneaucovered.com and there are slightly different model numbers from 2nd gen to 3rd gen. I do believe the bed boxes are very similar though.
Will this work with a 2021 tacoma trail edition with the bed storage boxes? I keep watching this vid and staring at my bed and its hard for me to say it would w/o modifying and trimming down those rail hangers provided in the kit.
On BakFlip's site, it specifically says it won't work with the factory bed storage boxes. The MX4 uses brackets to lower the slider rail. You'll likely be able to just lose the rail and modify the brackets OR lose the boxes to make it happen. I'm sure it's possible.
@@tacomanetwork thanks for the reply. Since the kit has extra brackets i might try and modify them to clear the top of the boxes. Its a 5ft bed. Having the extra brackets would help with support but its not like im putting weight on top of the cover. Looks like opening the lids clears the underneath the cover but who knows until i try. The metal brackets which lower the factory rail are sold separately or are they standard with any mx4 (for example bought off Amazon) I ask because buying in Mexico might mean getting it only from Amazon
They come standard with the MX4 for the Tacoma. There will be enough for either the shortbed or the longbed
can the more forward section fold back too, if you want something higher on that end ?
Yeah, I show it in the video entirely folded up to the cab. Worst case, two thumb nuts and you can remove the cover entirely.

@@tacomanetwork that’s a bummer, I’d have thought they’d be on some historic register. IIRC they held some record for largest free standing wooden structures on Earth. You ever google pics of their purpose? They’d jam multiple blimps in there that were part of the costal defense system that scouted for Japanese submarines during the war. There were other examples either Washington or Oregon but I think they burned down.
@@JamesReedy Just looked it up...they're still owned by the Department of the Navy. 17 stores high, 1000' long and 300' wide. I've worked in the area a while and have actually seen both doors opened and a blimp running into one door, through the hangar and out the other end. They're two of the largest wood building ever built. Rumors a while back was that they were going to implode/tear down the north tower as the roof was collapsing. The Navy fixed it, but it remains closed. the South is still used for events/TV/Movie on occasion.

Big assumption (meaning a lot of money to gamble on). I would contact BakFlip and make sure. I'm sure the bed size is identical, but if the mounting points are slightly off, it might be a big issue

Likely direct from Bakflip for any parts. Most resellers don't stock the parts.
You might be able to make your own though maybe weather stripping at a hardware store?
You didn’t mentioned it so I guess is a no, if I wanted to completely move the cover out the way, how difficult would it be?
Like remove the cover completely? That's easy - 1. fold the cover all the way to the cab. 2. unscrew the two thumb nuts on the underside of the cover near the cab. Then, just lift up the cover - it's pretty lightweight being all aluminum.

That's a no-go for me. I don't want to drill my bed.
No drilling required - I opted not to install the tubes and my bed has been pretty water tight to date. A few drips get inside when I wash, but that's it

On my 3rd Gen, there are already three small drain holes in the bed at the front of the cab. All you need to do is take a step drill bit and barely go in the hole to widen it.
@@Terrorcon24 Damn dude, where the hell did you get an access cab off road?!? I would've LOVED to have an access cab off road. I have the double cab which means the 5ft bed. I love the overall length of it and I don't like how long the double cab with the 6ft bed is so I compromised. But the best version is the access cab but I have never seen one here in California.
@@westcoastplinkin6559 I was actually wanting a TRD Pro when I went to go buy. They had no DC’s available in our entire area at the time, but the salesman walked me into the back where they get all their newly arrived vehicles cleaned up before sending it out on the lot, and my access cab was there waiting on me to sign papers. You see a few around here in Oklahoma, most are work trucks and receive no love. Mine has found a good home. Throwing a upTOP medium bed rack and a 4x4 Colorado Alto tent on it this month. Also a Cali Raised LED stealth bumper, light bar and Warn 10S Winch. She is looking good. Got er tuned with OTT Tuning, Med/Spicy and it runs great. Are ORAC’s really that uncommon out there?
I ordered this last month and the hardware that came in is different from this video. After my install, i was not able to utilize my bed rail anymore. Very disappointing. I wanted to return but i did not want to pay the shipping and restocking fee. I hope no one gets the same product i received.
I heard that Backflip might have slightly changed the way it mounts toward the cab - someone posted a photo in a FB group. I didn't know about the bed rails though...did they do away with the slide rail dropping brackets?
If someone wants to steal something, is it easy to be pried open?
Sure, anything is possible….but most crimes are ones of opportunity. The aluminum cover provides an amount of deterrent as well as cover for the unknown. I’m good with that. I added the remote tailgate lock as well, so every time I lock my truck, the tailgate locks. Pryability? They'd have to really get in there with a purpose built prybar
I got one and it leak really bad on my Tacoma.
They're not meant to be a waterproof cover. They try, with the seals and the drainage tube (Which I didn't install), but in the end, water will get into any cover

Just a heads up. This is no longer applicable as I am finding out at this very moment. My new cover is a different installation. Now you don't even move the utility rail. You Mount the adaptor rail to the utility rail.
Yeah, I also just found out that BakFlip has changed this. Question: Is the rail still usable? If not, they literally just cheapened the cost of the cover by not including machined brackets to lower the rail. It's kind of a bummer that they're cutting costs and limiting usage of the bed
@@tacomanetwork nope. Your utility rail is no longer usable with the cleats, or really, anything. Now, you basically bolt the adaptor rail to the stock utility rail, then the rail for the cover stacks on top of the adaptor rail and uses machined clamps to clamp it all on top of each other. Stupid design. (Not to mention, I'm going to be pissed when I accidentally hit my hands on the machines clamps that stick out and it cuts skin!
A buddy of mine has the first Gen, if you will, and I went over yesterday. The build on those are far far superior. Not just the way it mounts, the entire cover itself is built better.

Wow, it's completely different. They really screwed over the consumer/truck user with that cover now. The panel against the truck cab seems larger too - mine was much smaller allowing more bed access with fully open. But the big issue is using the bed rail to mount it rendering the rail now pretty much useless. This brackets are a big hazard too - I remember the lowering brackets being crazy sharp as they don't finish thier aluminum pieces at all. It's a shame, because the actually had a great product, but it looks like they tried to redesign it to save some money. BakFlip is owned by Real Truck now....so I'm sure it's all about the money. Sorry that you got this version....
