Hey Tom, nice thorough recap. I had some decent seats so couldn't always see his feet but I definitely noticed the 'kick drum' pedal of some sort and I liked how he brought in the bass pedals during the encore. "Changing" was a favorite moment for me along with "In The Blood." This was my first time seeing him live so the unique Solo show setting made it all the more memorable. Keep up your great work!! ✌
Great vid man. A couple of these even a few "hardcore" fans in certain groups didn't seem to know what was going on, namely the voice carryover pedal and the bass pedals. Good stuff
Wow thanks for sharing all of that, I was very curious how John was keeping his acoustic setup fresh and interesting. Very cool I just saw he released more tour dates, none nearby for me :( but still. That double neck Martin is something else. Thanks again!
Going to see him in Sacramento in exactly one week. We have pretty poor seats up in the nosebleeds so I will definitely look for these things. Thanks for breaking it down for us.
Thanks for this insight and explanation! Very cool. Attended 2 shows of the Solo Tour - now I appreciate the shows that much more after your explanation.
You’re welcome! It’s a brilliant show and I was super impressed with the audience as well. Very attentive and it really didn’t feel like an arena show. It felt much more intimate.
@@TomButwin You're right - didn't feel like an arena show at all. Very intimate feeling which I suspect is hard to pull off at MSG (I think it might have been a sold out show). Very different vibe from the Sob Rock Tour. Hopefully, you can see him again in the fall. As a struggling guitar student/adult learner - I appreciate your videos and your talent.
Wow ! Great video , this just adds another level to how special this tour is . I saw the PA show and was blown away. Changing should be performed on the piano moving forward. John is killing it!
Nice catch on all these approaches. By the way, Rush used Moog Taurus pedals for many years to allow Alex and Geddy to add some synth sounds in addition to the guitar, bass and drums, or even some bass notes when Geddy played keyboard.
I am not an English speaking person , I am a French speaking one from Québec (Canada). I understand litterally all things you say even if you speak fast, it’s clear, well articulated, flowing freely without hesitation and always very interesting. I admire you for that while I could not be so good even in french. Thank you very much and long live!
I saw him just a few days ago. As a guitar player, I was watching his feet and (I was close to the stage) hands closely. But, I knew it was more elaborate than the tour title lead on.
He could absolutely roll with just an acoustic into a DI, but why not add some other fun things? It’s not over the top and still sounds like one, solo performer.
@@TomButwin My setlist was awesome! Got to hear In The Neighborhood's debut which is incredible, and A Face to Call Home which is a super special song to me. Split Screen Sadness was also a welcome suprise!
Awesome video Tom! Had no idea he was using the organ pedals but it’s so cool, explains how Edge of Desire sounds so huge, I thought the bass was a bit too fat to just be from that acoustic!
Thanks, Parker! It was. After seeing the show live, I suspect he had some kind of octave effect on the 6 string a few times too. Doesn’t come across on phone recordings, but the low end was super fat at some points. Sounded great, whatever it was.
@@TomButwin I'm seeing him in the fall, I wonder what will change between now and then! Knowing Mayer he'll have a whole new rig for it haha! Great video as always man
I’ll have to go back and search some setlists, but I know he has on “I’m On Fire/3x5” for the falsetto stuff. It’s very, very subtle and hard to hear in an arena that has really long reverb to begin with.
Nice video man. I was so happy he added the fall dates or I would have missed this incredible tour.

Marc! Thanks man. You HAVE to catch him with the full ensemble. Especially with Greg Phillinganes and Aaron Sterling.
@@TomButwin I know, that would be killer!!!
I didn´t know any of these tricks! thanks man, I´m gonna take more attention to this in his next perfomance
Thanks for this. Now he says he's coming to the UK this information adds to the experience. I can't wait to see him.
Can’t wait to see the official dates!

My crappy seats gave me an Eagle-eyed view to discover all of this lol

I hope he adds something close to you!

Watch what he’s doing with his feet, if you can. It’ll be great either way!
Nice breakdown. Very informative.
Thanks, Ben!

Thanks so much for your kind words. Keep it up with playing and please don’t hesitate to send me any questions, if you have them!
He is!! I agree. John on piano and then out front for the solo.

Alex and Geddy were/are trailblazers!
Nice vid!
hey great video tom!
Thanks!

I appreciate this very much!
Outstanding presentation...John should commend you personally. Thank you.
I appreciate that. Thank you.
The martin double neck is 1 of only 2 made and the other is in the Martin museum
I saw that! @johnmayergear is on the case!

@@TomButwin I really appreciated your in depth analysis. I always think I’ve learned everything I possibly could about JM, but here we are lol.
He’s constantly evolving and pushing forward. Love to see it.
Very interesting video Tom! Can't wait to see John this weekend!
What were your thoughts on the setlist you heard?
Thanks, Michael! Can’t wait to hear what you think. I feel like we got a good one in Detroit. Especially with the impromptu “Wild Blue.”

Love it. That’s so cool. These shows are really, really special. I’ve been hearing from so many people about how they are really meaningful to them.
Where did you see him? I just saw him last week in St. Louis!
Detroit! Loved it.

He probably will!! Lol
reggae bands sometimes use those organ pedals for bass
Sure do!
which songs does he do the vocal expression pedal on?

Tom doing a favour for everyone 🤍🤍
