    People might already said this, but the stop this train slap thing is more of a "slap with thumb, flick/hit another string with first finger" thing, so when he slaps he also hits a string at the same time.

    JM actually plays note with his pointer finger when he slaps his thumb on bass string in half of his songs ..including 'Stop this train' which you played muting the note with each slap, thereby killing the feeling of the song. Who says, heart of life are some other songs where he plays note while slapping instead of completely muting all strings.

  • @charliedillon1400
    @charliedillon1400 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thanks for explaining a bit about the "Hendrix style" of wrapping your thumb around to the top strings to replace the barre chord shape. I always thought it was just a trick to mute the top strings so you don't accidentally strum them when you don't want to. I've even have had other guitarists claim it was a sloppy hack for sloppy strumming.

      Leo B - listen to stuff like Ghost, Lotus Island, Baptism of Solitude, Look Up There, Whitewash, or if you have the time, The entirety of Pike 65 (which is a 30 minute song dedicated to his mum, and is sublime). If you want to go with some cool heavier chords/arpeggios, then try The Bellman, Pepper's Ghost, Asylum of Glass, Stretching Lighthouse, or Soothsayer (Tried to avoid the most obvious ones, apart from the end one). There are plenty of others that I've missed (dude has 150 hours of songs), but those would be my starting point.
      If all you know Buckethead for is mindless shredding and Jordan, then I'm afraid that you really don't know Buckethead.

    It seems like just a simple extra technique but it takes quite some time to get the hang of.

    In Stop This Train he actually doesn't mute the strings when slapping. It's one of his signature techniques that he slaps with his thumb and at the same time flicks a note with his index finger. He uses the same technique on Who Say's. It's not a criticism (since I am not nearly as good as you or even Mayer) but Stop This Train sounds completely different. Still a great video and demonstration.

    habits of Chuck Schuldiner. I absolutely love his riff writing and solo composition and think he is a severly underrated guitarist. would absolutely eat up a video about him

    John lets the notes ring when he slaps, even going so far as to pick a note while slapping. Best advice I have for that is to slap on the low E or A string

    It'd be interesting to see you try "Habits of Ryan Adams". I'd appreciate it at least! His guitar work back in The Cardinals from 2005-2009 was incredible. He holds back A LOT nowadays.

    Could you dissect some of Gary Moore's high speed stuff? Like his lightning fast repeating licks and ascending/descending runs? Blues and non-blues? That man was insane. He used his speed so often and it always sounded so clean/technically sound.
