  • The next step in verifying that your audio analyzer is set up correctly is to make sure you have the proper signal level to get actionable data.

I love to geek out about the physics of sound. This channel focuses on the growing opportunity for live sound engineers to improve their confidence and consistency through the understanding of the principles of sound system design and optimization. My goal is to make this channel upfront and honest about my success and failure, so you can learn from both.
I am always open to suggestions and feedback so please comment on this video or contact me through my site.

I assume now that you have 20db above the noise floor - you would then EQ the system globally? Thanks so much for these videos. I run sound for a small church so this series has been such a blessing.

Hey Joe, I haven't really gotten into the how and when of EQ. EQing the system globally is probably the last step in our order of operations. We start with single systems, then move on to combined systems.

    I have a question.
    When setting measurements and references,
Should the pink noise of the signal generator be set at -12db?
Or should I set it up at -60db?
    because,
If the pink noise of the signal generator is set at -12db,
Isn't it hard to secure more than 20db higher than the noise floor?

For measuring satélite speakers indoors hanging from ceiling do point mic up or towards the speakers from listening position. I’m measuring 5.1 Channel setup on avr with lfe. For lfe where to place and point mic?

Hey Avi, depends on the mic. Most of the work we do is with free field mics pointed at the source. Acousticians sometimes use diffuse field mics that get pointed straight up and they are measuring RT60 and stuff like that.

Thanks for your radio ! but i really want know why the coherence is so improtant ?and how to interpret my coherence trace ,my phase trace and magitude trace?

I recommend Merlijn Van Veen's most recent article - www.merlijnvanveen.nl/en/study-hall/154-coherence-and-reverberation

ok, but does the system response can be different when playing loud as during the show ? And must be warmed before measuring ? Same question about the mic preamp, is there a problem giving too much preamp on my mic ? Thanks for your work, it's helpful !

Hey Olivier, good to hear from you.
      > does the system response can be different when playing loud as during the show ?
I hope not. Don't you? If the loudspeaker response changes with level, that would make it non-linear and pretty hard to work with.
      > And must be warmed before measuring ?
Loudspeakers do perform differently at different temperatures. So should you heat up the drivers before performing an alignment? I don't know, but it probably makes sense to look at both cases.
I have written about power compression here: www.sounddesignlive.com/do-subwoofers-need-time-alignment/#Does_the_phase_response_of_a_subwoofer_change_with_level
      > is there a problem giving too much preamp on my mic ?
Yes, you need to get above the noise floor and have a high level for for a high quality signal, but without clipping or distortion.

Why do I want maximum coherence on my graph? I am new to smaart haha. Will it provide better results?
