You could see it coming… & Romulus went scorched earth on Mattson. Maybe the best moment of the season so far. They finally stopped wondering what their dad would do & realized that he would’ve done whatever the hell he wanted to.
Here I think Roman spilled that they didn't have the Board's support and that Mattson could easily go behind the siblings and gain the Board's support.
Logan was more direct and less manipulative in some respects. Because Logan just bowled people over with sheer power and intimidation. Mattson enjoys screwing with people in more psychotic ways. It was nice seeing this side of Roman. Finally some honesty. And I like that Ken was like, “Well. That’s not what we planned, but we can work with it.” I also love that the Old Guard said you can’t read Kendall. He deserves some props for being savvy enough.
"Psychotic" = in a state of psychosis. It's when a person with schizophrenia has hallucinations. Or when a bipolar person has the manic phase. Or it's like the movie "Psycho" where a man grooms the corps of his dead mother for years. That's psychosis. "Psychopathic behavior" = behavior OF a psychopath. That's Hannibal Lecter or Gone girl. A person who is absolutely in control of the situation. They are cold-blooded and merciless, but they know exactly what they're doing and they mean it to be that way. Basically that means malicious and sadistic behavior. That's "psychopathic". Because that's what psychopaths do (and some narcissists). The word you wanted to use in your comment was "psychopathic".
“And if you tell the board I said any of this, I’m just gonna say it was a negotiating tactic, and maybe it is, but it’s not, so fuck you” is one of my new favorite lines of this show
Just take the fucking money and run. Roman breaks my heart. He is still so loyal to the shitstain that was Logan Roy( masterfully played by Brian Cox). So broken by the loss of a guy who NEVER ONCE showed him real love.
I'm surprised that not everyone is grasping this. This scene is fundamentally a sad reminder of how Roman has not processed his father's death, it's not some big "win" just because he told a guy to go fuck himself.
You don’t get the trauma bond. His father set him up for this life of failure, just like he did the other siblings. His trauma bond to his father is part of a long term attempt to deny reality. His father was a prick, he would be embarrassed because just as Roman said, “we’re nothing.” This is just pure tragedy, there is no silver lining.
4:25 The way Matsson leans in intimidatingly, while Roman smirks, completely unfazed by him proves his point in the finale: “It could’ve been me”. Romulus truly became his father’s son in this scene.
I think you can argue he's just as bad as them. Like he's probably smarter. But he's pretty impulsive and moronic too. I was getting an "all the adults are gone" vibe this episode. That's a pretty cool angle to me. Like logan and Kerry said (I think), "the guy's made one piece of tech and thinks he's a genius."
@@MG-he7er Hes not, in fact when negotiating w him we can see how Logan kinda respects him, bc Matsson is probably the most similar characters weve seen in the series to Logan himself, even being able to outmanouver him and having that killer instinct that Logan talked so much ab. At the start of the episode it seemed that Matsson was utterly stupid being so condescendent to them, but in the end, Matsson turned out beating them both going over them, right there he just proved that he does has that killer instinct, not to mention that he saw right through Ken and Roms charade in only like 2 minutes talking to them lol.
@Mauro Rossi Montero yeah I'm not sure if he is or isn't. Definitely not arguing that he didn't embarrass the boys this episode. I'm just saying we've seen him have his moments, but we've seen Ken and Roman have theirs too. But we both know those two are deeply flawed. In the short amount of time we've seen Mattson, the writers showed he has some pretty major flaws of his own. Just this episode he told shiv, the sister of the brothers he's trying to fuck, that he has a history of seriously harassing an employee. I don't think that's a throwaway piece of information in this show. Also, there are clear parallels with elon musk caricature (itchy twitter fingers/impulsive decision making). But even Shiv figured that plan out. It was definitely obvious. And as for logan... that is tough. Their convo did seem pretty equal but that was it for the two of them. So yeah idk what he really thought of him. Just saying it's possible that he's an intelligent dumdum like the others. But I do know for sure that I love this show. This is one of the few things I'd comment on TH-cam for lol.
obviously this wasn't a negotiation tactic but i think roman still played it smart. he was probably less committed to tanking the deal than kendall so maybe there was a part of him that thought "worst case scenario i piss off the swede and we get a nice price bump."
The cast and acting for the character of matson is fucking amazing here, what a great portrayal of a villain. He’s always right in your face saying annoying shit, always confrontational, almost like he’s intentionally trying to piss you off so you take a swing at him, almost like he’s daring you to go ahead and do it. But you can’t, beyond all the other reasons because he’s this huge beast of a man and he’d probably beat the shit out of you anyway. So you just sit there frustrated. You almost feel it yourself watching this guy. Just great acting.
That shot of Mattson at the final second of the clip should be enough for anyone who thinks he 'won' this or was playing them to bring this out. He's fuming. No different to the Roy kids in so many ways
Exactly ... Mattson's not some "evil genius." He's just as childish as the Roy siblings, just as mean and competitive as Logan and ultimately only triumphs because of his lies about India. Makes the final conflict all the more unpredictable and compelling IMHO
On a viewing after knowing how the show ends, Roman's emotional outburst is a disaster. He glances off the part where Mattson gave up his weak point, that he needs the deal to happen quickly because he is hiding bad numbers in India, and he makes a double error in giving away their intention openly that they're trying to slow the deal down but also giving away the weak spot that they don't know how. That he mentions trying to bore Mattson to death also gives away that he doesn't know Mattson's weak point, he missed Mattson's mistake with his one emotional outburst that he needs the deal to happen fast.
Mattson's furious at Roman's naked gall and undisguised contempt ... AND he "loved that shit." He was sort of bored and listless before, but learning he had an actual conflict on his hands with Roman and Kendall, a FIGHT where he could BEAT someone ... THAT he most definitely loved!
Absolutely riveting scene, one of the best in the show. Roman's outburst was both cathartic and pathetic, because of how easily he played right into Matsson's hands.
how did he play in his hands? Mattsson could have gone to the board with the higher offer any time he wanted. No significance of Roman's behavior here.
@@liljackypaper he made it so that the old guard knew and they couldn’t sell, he forced them to sell just like Kendall forced vaulter to sell, vaulter “won” more money but he lost what he wanted, his company. Plus I feel like matsson recorded it or something
I doubt that Matsson is legitimately using these little antagonizations as a way to gain leverage in the deal. It feels more like the deal is going to happen or it isn't, depending on the actual business factors, and everything between Matsson and Kendall/Roman is just fucking around. None of the conversation between him and the Roys actually fucking matters, because what matters is the numbers. Is ATN making money? Is it going to continue to make money? Can Matsson change the company so it makes even more money? That's all that matters.
I still, months after this has aired, cannot understand the pervasive misinterpretation of this scene by so many. Roman actually just shit himself. This was literally, matssons intention to push him til they revealed what he suspected. This displays roman as a childish simpleton throwing his toys out of the cot and matsson as competent, cold and calculated and that is why he ultimately won.
@@istillsing1234 sure but for that line he was standing completely still as if when they acted the scene out there was a pause/silence for effect. I don't think that line was there when they acted the scene
The last time Roman was this out of control was in ‘Retired Janitors of Idaho’ when Kendall charges in the room while Logan was not himself and Roman yells at Ken as he walks away. The consistency in character traits is 👌
In any other show mattson would be oblivious to the shenanigans of the protagonist but within a minute he confronted them about trying to tank the deal and it’s so embarrassing. Imagine being that incompetent that you don’t realize people see right through your very simple tricks.
@@Theu159 Mattson saw right through their bs and used Roman’s threat against him by going around him. Making the offer to the board (Frank) instead of them.
I also think that Mattson was deliberately messing with Ken and Rome through every negotiation stage for shits and giggles. To amuse himself. A lion playing with mice. The power lies with the board - he knew that from the beginning. Any interaction with Rome and Ken was just to pour salt into their wounds while they were emotionally reeling from Logans death. Just petty mind games coming from Mattson. He wanted to go over their heads and straight to the board anyway.
The first time i watched this episode. I didn't even notice Matsson is peeing. That was great acting by Kieran ,you couldn't take the eyes from him in this scene.
Buddy showed them boys they not even in the same league as him as far as negotiating...Logan was his equal, The B Roll Brothers are just a "Tribute Band"....great fucking line......Roman got too emotional.....Mattson don't give a fuck about Logan dying...He wants the deal
It's amazing how Culkan and Strong make their delivery just that little bit more forced to make it clear that Roman and Kendall are not trained actors.
Succession is the weirdest show I think I've ever seen. It's the only show I can think of where someone puts a massive plan in motion and it all falls apart by the next scene, or when a character committs a massive betrayal based on evidence that he just didn't look into enough.
Mattson is all smoke and mirrors and the kids know this. Eating up everything that the Roy family has touched is a morale victory for him for sure, but at the end of the day he’s just as much of a buffoon as them. He just happens to hold up a sign that says the highest number. Logan was truly one of a dying breed. The rest of them are playing toy soldiers.

“Hanna-Barbara School of Business” sometimes I feel like these kids graduated from there. They’re all smart, but can’t get of their own way. Mattson played them like a fiddle.

The moment he met them in the ep and said why do you have so many people hear why is the old guard here and they sent them away it was over. Mattson is so freakin smart he’s running circles around them
@@bobdole6768 He clearly doesn't care about the money. He went higher then they expected but wanted ATN as well. The board liked the first deal and would have sold. And then he raised it again after the debacle on the plane just to troll them with an even bigger offer so they have no moves.
Matsson knew who he was going to negotiate with. He knows from before that Roman is a impulsive ,kinda "say whatever stupid thing is on my mind". And Kendall that he is a try-hard ,a wannabe CEO. When he saw the fake articles that the deal vibes are off ,and the bad movie just confirmed it. That they wanted to tank the deal. He had it all planned before this negotiation ,he knew if he said something bad about Logan ,that Roman would break and then they couldn't tank the deal with a higher offer. Someone will say ,yeah but he paid more. I don't think that bothered him that much ,his satisfaction was seeing their faces at the end. That confirmed that Matsson is a killer and that he only cares about seeing his prey hurt in the end.
At 3:01 : I'm glad Roman did what he did. Kendall is stoic and hard to read, but I hope they decided to tell Shiv what happened & hope she makes Ebba shove the 🗡️ into Mattson & twists it to bleed his money till he's dry.
People acting like Roman won… Mattson just bought ATN, gutted the senior leadership team, left Ken & Roman pissed off & now has Shiv under his thumb 😂😂😂
The scary thing is Roman is probably right about Mattson intentionally drags the deal out for months, partly to see if Logan's gonna expire soon. Dude's a bit psychotic like Logan, so I wouldn't rule him out of that inhuman tactic, especially when he's very explicit about waiting for Logan to die, so it'd be a clearer coast for him. And now he wants to close the deal immediately after he died. Mf definitely timed that.
Roman was definitely not built to takeover Waystar. You can clearly see how his lack of nerve and experience fucks everything up here. Kendall was the most competent out of all three siblings by far. He’s a seasoned negotiator and a proper strategist.

Does anyone know Mattson's back story? Can we assume he came from money? It was revealed in this ep that his dad suicided - by keeping the BMW running and gassifying himself. Mattson says finding his dad gave him 'trauma' but I think he was trying to one-up Kendall and Logan in the 'my dad just died' stakes. Matsonns fathers dads death gave him control over the family money and Matson steered that into a billion dollar GoJo. These are all my wild assumptions. Keen to hears others thoughts.
I think what matsonn did after this, going directly to the board, kinda makes sense as thr best move for him to buy ATN too, but i think he does not know how volatile american politics is and how big of a political player ATN is. I think Ken and Rome would leak that jeryd mencken has had a direct line to ATN. Which would work as a poison pill of sorts. And idk how would matsonn back out then, 'cause this shit is binding.

You have to try really hard to get someone like Roman, who only ever tiptoes and jokes around real emotion, to genuinely blow up on you without any pretense. I knew by how furious this little insult against his dad made him that he was going to break down hard later when the grief actually hit him. He really loved Logan probably more than anyone despite the abuse
Is it just me, or there's something wrong with the sound editing at 1:35? It seems Mattson's line was superimposed there... Maybe they thought there was too long of a silence there?
I predicted a couple weeks ago that Roman was either going to kill Matsson or have someone do it for him. I still like those chances. Especially if and when he finds out he cut a deal with Shiv. Hanna-Barbera Business School 😂 Matsson is also on point with the insults
Here I think Roman spilled that they didn't have the Board's support and that Mattson could easily go behind the siblings and gain the Board's support.
That _”Did I?”_ from Roman is so good, he doesn’t care what it costs he’s just had enough of Mattson's shit and I love it
Logan was more direct and less manipulative in some respects.
It's not "psychotic" it's called "psychopathic".
Gosh, learn the meaning of the words before you use them 🙄🙄🙄🤦♀️
"Psychotic" = in a state of psychosis.
@@omg9261 People use the word psychotic in this context plenty.
@@omg9261 I’m using it as a common adjective not a DSM-5 classification. And I don’t need a vocabulary lesson.
KIERAN CULKIN WE ARE GETTING YOU THAT EMMY BABE HOLD ON TIGHT
“And if you tell the board I said any of this, I’m just gonna say it was a negotiating tactic, and maybe it is, but it’s not, so fuck you” is one of my new favorite lines of this show
Just take the fucking money and run. Roman breaks my heart. He is still so loyal to the shitstain that was Logan Roy( masterfully played by Brian Cox). So broken by the loss of a guy who NEVER ONCE showed him real love.
Not once
I'm surprised that not everyone is grasping this. This scene is fundamentally a sad reminder of how Roman has not processed his father's death, it's not some big "win" just because he told a guy to go fuck himself.
It's both sad and heart-warming how Roman defends Logan even though Logan was clearly ambivalent towards him.
Rome respects the giant his dad is
You don’t get the trauma bond. His father set him up for this life of failure, just like he did the other siblings. His trauma bond to his father is part of a long term attempt to deny reality. His father was a prick, he would be embarrassed because just as Roman said, “we’re nothing.”
This is just pure tragedy, there is no silver lining.
Logan loved his kids in his own, fucked up way. Brian Cox said so himself, saying the love he had for his kids was his biggest problem.
4:25 The way Matsson leans in intimidatingly, while Roman smirks, completely unfazed by him proves his point in the finale: “It could’ve been me”. Romulus truly became his father’s son in this scene.
Romans smile at 4:28 is fantastic… shows he is ready for fucking war!!! And Mattson does not scare him at all. Beautiful scene
Mattson is what Logan would call "serious people".
So, a demon?
Roman himself called Mattson a "serious person."
The way Ken just stares Matsson at the end… damn
That shot of Mattson at the final second of the clip should be enough for anyone who thinks he 'won' this or was playing them to bring this out. He's fuming. No different to the Roy kids in so many ways
Yes, he is angry. Dissappointed.
But he still won anyway because the spoiled kids are losers
Exactly ... Mattson's not some "evil genius." He's just as childish as the Roy siblings, just as mean and competitive as Logan and ultimately only triumphs because of his lies about India. Makes the final conflict all the more unpredictable and compelling IMHO
It's July 04th, and it's been weeks without Succession. URGH, I miss this show.
Great comment
Mattson loved that shit.
How did he play into his hands? By making Matsson offer even more money? Wow, Matsson really showed them!
@@basedpatriotLT he's like Logan hes not really gonna do that unless he doesn't think his big dick can get him through it
@@liljackypaper he made it so that the old guard knew and they couldn’t sell, he forced them to sell just like Kendall forced vaulter to sell, vaulter “won” more money but he lost what he wanted, his company.
And what was it he suspected, pray tell?
Totally agree, the other replies referring to this scene as “badass” has me very confused
I was so focused on Rom last night that I did not notice Matt was peeing lmao

4:28 Roman's "did I?" cracks me up hard
The last time Roman was this out of control was in ‘Retired Janitors of Idaho’ when Kendall charges in the room while Logan was not himself and Roman yells at Ken as he walks away. The consistency in character traits is 👌
Good for Roman ! I really felt that! Brillirant work by Kieran !
In any other show mattson would be oblivious to the shenanigans of the protagonist but within a minute he confronted them about trying to tank the deal and it’s so embarrassing. Imagine being that incompetent that you don’t realize people see right through your very simple tricks.
Mattson played the boys like a fiddle despite Roman’s valiant effort to stand up for himself
How so?
Honestly, I thought Roman looked whiny and weak. Mattson was two steps ahead of the CE-Bros the entire time.
@@Seitanic_panic I can see that
@@Theu159 Mattson saw right through their bs and used Roman’s threat against him by going around him. Making the offer to the board (Frank) instead of them.
He didn’t play them. He paid an absolute fortune for a company that was worth a fraction. It’s the fictionalized version of Elon buying Twitter.
Kendall casually walking away is so funny to me idk why lol
Talk about Character development with Roman. Wow. 😊
that “Did I?” 4:28 is off the charts 🤯 !
Mattson face in the end says it all... I'm burning your playhouse and stealing your bank accounts.
15 episodes of "do we sell? we're selling, no wait not selling, ok selling, wait do we sell?"
Still not sure if Ken is looking at Mattson in Disgust or is just in shock at how him and Roman just spoke to each other
Ken’s seen it before. Just there to stop Lukas from smacking Rome hard in the mouth.
The only way to win a negotiation is to give less of a fuck about the outcome than the other guy.
The first time i watched this episode. I didn't even notice Matsson is peeing. That was great acting by Kieran ,you couldn't take the eyes from him in this scene.
Buddy showed them boys they not even in the same league as him as far as negotiating...Logan was his equal, The B Roll Brothers are just a "Tribute Band"....great fucking line......Roman got too emotional.....Mattson don't give a fuck about Logan dying...He wants the deal
l literally thought Roman was gonna throw him off the cliff when he smiled and said "Did i?"
Kieran Culkin's finest hour.
Fantastic scene, incredible acting
Being the one who gets to walk off is always the move
Ladies and gents, Kieran Culkin just won himself an Emmy at the top of that mountain, or at least he should.
if the monologue didn't do it already, that voice crack at 4:44 while storming off definitely should
Best of season 4 so far
It's amazing how Culkan and Strong make their delivery just that little bit more forced to make it clear that Roman and Kendall are not trained actors.
Succession is the weirdest show I think I've ever seen. It's the only show I can think of where someone puts a massive plan in motion and it all falls apart by the next scene, or when a character committs a massive betrayal based on evidence that he just didn't look into enough.
Reading the comments, 1 thing is certain, everyone learned a new word and the scene is definitely cathartic
Logan is a dying breed but it’s good that his breed is dying.

@@vasvas8914 It’s been implied several times that he comes from old money, same as them
So cool to watch the brothers trying to transcend their dad's death. Kendall doing his awkward "modern" imitation and Roman trying to honor his wishes. And now shaping their futures without him
I love how Roman looks like a pissed off schoolchild at 2:20.
This episode was so good! Let the Titan of industry games begin!
First time I love Roman in a scene.
This is where Rom won more billions ...
ya they were scooby dooing him looool
“Hanna-Barbara School of Business” sometimes I feel like these kids graduated from there. They’re all smart, but can’t get of their own way. Mattson played them like a fiddle.
“Played like them a fiddle” he paid a Premium nobody expected for the purchase of their companies. Not saying he didn’t end up with everything he wants, but it was only by way of pure capital. He didn’t grind any bones to dust.
None of the kids are smart. And Shiv only seems somewhat capable because she was Daddy's favorite so she had a safety net.

Good negotiation technique, higher valuation eventually
So refreshing to hear them speak plainly, but also, OOH, Mattson needs to be punched 😂👊🏾 The snakes on a plane did not realize they were flying to a snake pit 😂
Shiv is now going to try and take over since she thinks she’s got dirt on the Swede
Roman is passed while Mattson is pissing 😂
This scene got Culkin his emmy
Not gonna lie, seeing roman dealing with the loss and unloading how he really felt to matsson…all while sitting on a ledge looking down on his shit; made me forget about every character this episode.
The moment he met them in the ep and said why do you have so many people hear why is the old guard here and they sent them away it was over. Mattson is so freakin smart he’s running circles around them
running circles around them by upping his offer massively?
@@bobdole6768 He clearly doesn't care about the money. He went higher then they expected but wanted ATN as well. The board liked the first deal and would have sold. And then he raised it again after the debacle on the plane just to troll them with an even bigger offer so they have no moves.
@@TheGoonSquadd It's a win win for kendall though, either they tank the deal or get more money than they would have otherwise
Uh huh
People acting like Roman won… Mattson just bought ATN, gutted the senior leadership team, left Ken & Roman pissed off & now has Shiv under his thumb 😂😂😂
Who knew having more money can do huh
Hannah Barbera fucking Business School 😂😂😂
What if this was a masterful stroke from Rome and it’s going to play out in his favor later on?
You've got to be kidding... Have you seen how Kendall tried to negotiate Waystar's debt with the bank? He acted like a complete clown.
@@CynicalBastard511yeah that's back when he had was still relatively inexperienced. Everything he went through in the subsequent seasons toughened him a bit.

Makes sense to me
He's the Elon Musk parallel so I'd imagine he comes from money.
Rome was playing 6-D chess here. Amazing 🤩
I was proud of the boys
I think what matsonn did after this, going directly to the board, kinda makes sense as thr best move for him to buy ATN too, but i think he does not know how volatile american politics is and how big of a political player ATN is. I think Ken and Rome would leak that jeryd mencken has had a direct line to ATN. Which would work as a poison pill of sorts. And idk how would matsonn back out then, 'cause this shit is binding.
I honestly would not know how Logan Roy would have reacted or thought about Kendall and Roman, maybe proud or somewhat disappointed at them,I just do not know as he was a difficult person to understand
I loved Roman here. My hero!
personally like Matson.. I use "Scooby doing" all the time now :) lol its business and he's being straight up and aggressive to close the deal; the kids can't even commit to something..
Nobody noticed how long it took to lukas to pee? It's like a whole minute 😂
Well, Alexander Skarsgard is 47 years old, so.. That explains it.
Is it just me, or there's something wrong with the sound editing at 1:35? It seems Mattson's line was superimposed there... Maybe they thought there was too long of a silence there?
I wonder if Mattson is going to royally screw them in the end and pull a Gekko
I predicted a couple weeks ago that Roman was either going to kill Matsson or have someone do it for him. I still like those chances. Especially if and when he finds out he cut a deal with Shiv. There's no question that Roman hates his guts. Matsson played him, and I don't think Roman plans on forgetting about that.
Bro there are no hitmen in this show, what are you watching?
This ain’t Yellowstone, the only thing Roman’s gonna kill is his father’s own company.
It's only a prediction. But after Roman unloaded on Matsson, I don't think you can dismiss it. Those weren't just words, he meant everything he said.
