My grandma taught me how to do this way back when. It's also great for making a ball of yarn. Don't make a knot at the end, but fold the butterfly in half and start wrapping the yarn around to make a ball (not too tightly or the yarn will develop kinks), tucking the tail under a strand or two at the end. Be sure to keep hold of the starting end in your left hand so that when you're done, you can pull yarn from the center. This keeps the yarn from rolling away and getting dirty.
