Mountain and Valley Wool Festival 2024 with Rebecca Mezoff
Take a little stroll around the MAVWA festival in Santa Fe, NM with Rebecca. There were great vendors, demonstrations, a few animals, and some music. I might have come away with a few yarn-y treats as well.

Learning how yarn is made can have a big influence on how we use it and which yarns we choose for our art or craft practices. I teach at Harrisville Designs in New Hampshire, USA fairly often and I always take advantage of their mill tours. I learn something every time. This video gives you a short peek inside the mill. My weave-along will likely be my desperate attempt to finish weaving my parents Christmas gift. I have about a quarter left and the image is a section of a 1928 painting of New York by Juaquin Garcia Torres. It's way more complicated than I anticipated; it's looking good so far but the panic is starting to set in! No trees in it though I'm afraid.

This is for the person who asked about building a wool palet in small quantities. Epic yarns by Timeless Textiles. Their Sampler has 10 yards each of ALL their 114 colors for $55! You can also order each color in smaller amounts. $30 yards for $3, 1/2 ounce -$4, one ounce-$7 and so on.
bonjour de france merci beaucoup pour tous vos merveilleux conseils, mais il est dommage de ne pas trouver votre livre en Francais !!
Sorry about that! I've asked for French and Spanish translations, but I have no power over the publishing industry. If you know of a French publisher who might like to purchase the book's translation rights, let my publisher Storey know!

Thanks for this, Rebecca. What time do these livestreams start? I got it completely wrong and missed it.
They start at 10:30am MT. I am in the same time zone as Denver, CO. You can go to my calendar and there is a time zone link so you can line yours up. We have had time changes all over the world over the last month, so things are shifting around. rebeccamezoff.com/calendar
Thank you for these videos. Sorry couldn’t make it live.😊🇨🇦
That is okay! The middle of the day thing doesn't work for a lot of people, but the recordings are good to watch! And I do have different days for these coming up (a Friday in December), so maybe that will work better!
Thank you! De-stressing in Seattle, indeed!
What a nice festival! I’m glad there’s fiber to be found. I’ve been to knit eat in Lyon, France which is the closest fiber festival from where I live and no spinning, no carding, no combing, no tapestry was represented. Overcrowded, a 2 hour line to get in (even with your purchased ticket) and just plenty of very commercial yarns for purchase
You should come to Felletin in October. crowded too, but a lot of independant spinners and dyers.
@ I will one day. I applied to work for Pinton but it didn’t work out for some reason. I’m sure it’s awesome! I’m also looking into the Swiss festival
Thanks for taking us along and giving us a look at this Santa Fe festival!
Very timely post, thank you !

Best tapestry book EVER!! ❤❤❤❤
I went to see Murmuration in Shetland, yesterday as part of Shetland Wool Week. It is being premiered here. It was amazing and inspiring, not only the tapestry but the collaborative process. So I’m going to sign up for your Introduction course and do tapestry instead of watching it!
I'm so happy you could see that tapestry! I wish I could see it in person myself. Fantastic collaborative process there! And I'm thrilled to hear you want to learn tapestry. I'll see you in class!
I think it is wonderful that your book is available from *anywhere* that sells books - I've seen it in my local bookshop in a smallish town in the southwest of England and I just think that is so cool. Congrats on your success.
I also think it is wonderful! I'm so happy you saw the book in a small shop in England! That is exciting. Thanks for letting me know.
Side note- My son has, since middle school (after an event that left him feeling powerless), been registering people to vote. He will be voting in the federal election this year for the first time!. One thing he has done- that we can all do- is to give his friends voter registration forms on their 18th birthdays. He always presents it as the gift that it is, and valuable right/responsibility of adulthood, in a decorated envelope or tied with ribbon like a diploma. And I apologize for bragging, but I really think it's been a terrific thing to do.
Hooray! Nicely done to your son! (and to his mom for raising him)
I really enjoy your tapestry content, Rebecca! A question for you or any other weavers who want to chime in: I’ve started weaving on a size medium Handywoman loom and I’m really enjoying it. But I often have trouble with the warp threads slipping off the “prongs”. Is there a trick to preventing this issue? Thanks!
Thank you! I'm curious whether you really have a Handywoman Shop loom. Those looms don't have pegs, they have slots cut into the top of the wood so I don't think there is any way the warp can slide off. The Mirrix Chloe and Saffron looms have metal pegs that stick forward and sometimes people do have trouble with the warp sliding off. This is because the warp tension isn't tight enough.
@@RebeccaMezoffTapestry Thank you for your reply! I couldn’t find the right word, but you’re right, it’s the slots cut into each end. I will have to start keeping a closer eye on my tension!
Thank you, Rebecca. It’s been fascinating, watching the creative process at work. I’ve learned loads. I’m enjoying working through your book too 🙂
what's being crafted in the video please or how does it become a tapestry people will be most familiar with
This is tatting. It is not tapestry at all. It is an old knotting technique using a small shuttle.
It’s really useful to see you start a new piece. Thanks
Where is the tiny loom from that you held up un the beginning of the video? I've been looking for something like that to no avail.
The tiny loom I held up was made by Jim Hokett. He has passed away and these are no longer available. I now use looms made by Handywoman Shop and highly recommend them. Her tiny bamboo looms are stronger than Hokett looms and they work well. I love her larger looms as well. www.handywomanshop.com/
Great video on the product. Thanks
Looks like a bone folder would be a good option, too.
Away to set up loom to reduce/prevent neck pain, maybe hang from ceiling or on bicycle stand or ...
Our fire alarm beeped, 2nd time we read can be dust so used the computer vac and it was quiet thereafter (and still havnt put up on wall).
I think this was likely the problem with ours. I did shake a live spider out of it and it was full of dust. I should have vacuumed it out... but it can't beep now since I disconnected it. (We have others)
@@RebeccaMezoffTapestry also a websearch found many smoke, fire, CO alarms were not working so good to check the model/sn #'s
The weft tension tips were really helpful. Thank you!
Спасибо большое, Ребекка! Ваши занятия для меня очень полезны. Эх, язык не понимаю, но глаза - мои помощники.
Thank you for watching!! I'm glad the demonstration helps.
Someone suggested music stands for tapestry loom weaving. I’m an orchestra director & music teacher. I’ve used music stands for this. It’s not my first choice as I have a wood desk that’s the perfect height and an adjustable desk chair. If you like to tilt your loom backwards a bit, a music stand could work. If you like it perfectly upright, you might find that you have to tilt it when you leave it and use silicone bands to keep your loom from tipping forwards. Check the lowest & highest height range for the stand trays to ensure that it reaches what you need it to be. Also, silicone bands come in large sizes & can hold your loom edges on a stand or an easel without damaging the loom or the tapestry. Amazon sells long bands in different colors that work well. I also use them in setting up a jig for 4-selvidges weaving. Your average kids’ metal folding stand will be too light so avoid those, even if you like the colors. They will tip over. You want to look for sturdy black stands that schools buy. Schools buy one of two brands: Wenger or Manhasset. A Wenger Bravo metal stand is heavy and probably stands the best chance of working as a loom stand for a Mirrix or Arras or larger loom.. It is a truly substantial music stand. It could easily hold a Mirrix Big Sister or Joni loom and maybe the Arras. Smaller looms as well. The Bravo has a storage tray under the main stand tray that can be used for storing scissors, yarn, butterflies, pens, beaters, & rolled up cartoons. The Wenger Classic stands have plastic bases & plastic trays. I used these stands with my 10-year old students and loved them but think it’s too light for a Mirrix Big Sister or Arras loom. It would be fine for other smaller wooden hand looms. The Wenger Preface & RoughHouse stands are almost as heavy as the Bravo. The RoughHouse controls the height with a squeeze lever instead of a pull/push sliding post. I think they would work for the Mirrix Big Sister & Arras but haven’t tried them. The Preface is an older model so it may not be available. The Manhasset stand, one model only, will tip over as easily as the Wenger Classic so my same advice applies. It’s all metal but not as substantial as the Wenger Bravo. I don’t love the newer versions as I think they’ve become lighter & lighter and don’t stay in working condition for very long without frequent maintenance. The trays on these stands need tightening every so often. It’s not hard to do … I taught my 10 year old students how to tighten them.
Whoot! Thank you for the expert advice on music stands! I appreciate you taking the time to advise us on which stands might work well for tapestry looms.
The scale of the mill is mind-blowing! Thank you for sharing.
Thanks, Rebecca. It was good to see a project from the very beginning 🙂

I'm interested in learning tapestry weaving. How many hours is the 'weaving tapestry on little looms' course, please?
The course is quite comprehensive. I don't know how many hours it would take you to do the course. On quick count it looks like there are 38 videos in the course. Some you won't need to watch, some you might watch more than once. The courses are available as long as you want and are a great reference.
Good lesson!
