Boxing Tips - 3 Tactics to Beat a Stronger Boxer

  • www.myboxingcoach.com - It is always worthwhile having the right boxing tactics for dealing with an opponent who is stronger than you. This boxing tips video will show you exactly how to be successful against strength.
    The physical strength of a boxer is often a key factor in a boxing match. However, it is not something that should always govern the outcome.
    Physical strength does not necessarily equal punching power, so do not confuse the two things.
    Often the thinnest and most wiry of opponents carry the most crunching power.
    Physical strength is about being able to push an opponent back, often literally pushing them back.
    The 3 Boxing Tactics to Defeat Strength
    Leave your ego outside the ring. Boxing is not a match of strength, great boxing skill will more often than not lead to success. If the opponent looks physically powerful then it is likely that they are. Test the strength in the opening exchanges then be prepared to apply tactics accordingly.
    Be willing to give up ground, but always exact a price. Control your range, be prepared to push away from the opponent but do so whilst throwing punches. Don't sacrifice ground without landing your shots on the way out.
    Don't become involved in a wrestling match at close range. Trying to overpower a stronger opponent by wrestling them at close just doesn't make sense. If the opponent seeks to lean on you or push you back, give the ground in short pushes. Use short range uppercuts and short range hooks and mix it up with pivots to deflect their line of attack.
    The interesting thing about stronger opponents is that once they tire their strength can ebb away at an alarming rate. These boxing tactics will help you confuse and tire the stronger opponent.

      So true...I'm 147 and I sparred against a guy that was 170. He hit me with a left hook and I blocked it but it went right through me, blinded by my ego I decided that I wanted to load up and show him that I also have power. Worse thing I could have done. I should have used my speed and my footwork because trying to load up on every shot takes alot of energy and I just made it that much harder on myself​.Learning this, I completely out boxed him the next sparring session.

    I´m a judo guy who started learning boxing after my thirties and while some muscles work in both grip isometric strength won´t help you against a good boxer or striker.

    just a quick question why is it in sparring people don't seem to commit to punches the way they do with mitts and heavy bag Of course they don't hit back is one reason but how do you transfer that sort of power speed into a live spar? a notice every punch becomes timid in sparring and just floats in and out with no power

      If you don't mind me saying most trainers and coaches believe sparring is about improving technique. Sparring is NOT a fight. Sparring is about mastering your craft with another person in the ring, perhaps simulating the moves of another opponent. So sparring is not about using power, it's about using your brain.

    Could you do a video on how to counter an amateur as an amateur?
    I.e when you watch white collar fights people almost windmill into each other as I guess it's scored on points and less like to get a k.o with the bigger gloves.
    Not sure if that makes sense sorry lol

    I think Michael Moorer was an interesting character regarding that, the way he handled Holyfield, Foreman among other guys who were physically superior. You have to find the line between not giving the stronger man too much respect and not being entirely ignorant of his strenght. Of course that's what happened to Moorer vs. Big George, but he was still kicking his ass for 10 rounds.

      Very good point. Strength can ebb away so turning the tables and pushing them back (with shots) at the right point is absolutely part of the equation.

    I have a problem with a guy, ultra strong and a zoner, he dont advance and on top have ultra long arms, i can do anything aganst him, is very frustrating because i have much more skills, but nothing works, any tips?

    I spar box with my dad that's like pounds bigger than me and has swole arms. But he plays defensive so theres no ground to give up. What do you do with those kinda boxers?

      Match their defense he’s bigger use your youth and speed boxing is about points in sparing it always about seeing where your bad at and correcting it

    hi. I'm righted orthodox. but I prefer boxing in a southpaw stance. should I stick with how I have been taught or switch to southpaw. which gives me more a stronger jab and a stronger right hook.

      Stick to what you have been taught. As you become more experienced you can experiment more with the southpaw stance.

    Question - Pure Power---what punch would you use to cause the most power (if one were hitting one of those punching Arcade Games ?
    What amount of straight versus rotary motion would generate the most power?
    I know this is not a boxing question:: , but I trust you and your subscribers in all things "punching" .

      Scott johnson It's worth saying all boxers have different shapes, sizes and reaches. Everyone's hardest punch and best punch is different. Some body types such as smaller reaches make the hook a lot more powerful but taller guys with longer reaches have more powerful straights.

      Believe this or not I have actually tried it. Back hand/right hook (short range) thrown from a 90 degree foot position (to the side). This generated more 'points' than my straight right or my left hook.

      I should add that this is on a machine that in some way applies an algorithm to measure 'force'. Not a measure of KO power...the two do not necessarily follow.

      There is a video on the channel on how to deal with a taller fighter. If by stiff arm you mean hold the lead hand out straight to keep you at arms length then the referee will warn him...it's a foul.

    Hi. I`m training boxing but for the most of the time I`m doing MMA. Very often in the boxing classes we are working on striking while moving backwards and the coach are teaching as totally the opposite from what I have learned doing MMA. In a basic stance per example while trowing the jab(left hand)he teaches us to move backwards the opposite foot-the right foot in that case and then trowing the right cross-moving backwards the left foot.Same with the hooks and uppercuts.Usually we are doing that in a combinations of 6 strikes.It feels very awkward and weird.Bringing the opposite foot backwards you basically are bringing the shoulder of the striking hand backwards,it has no sense...less powerful strike.Doing MMA I have learned:trowing the jab-left foot backwards,right cross-right foot backwards,works just perfect ......but the boxing coach wants us to learn "his" way.I don't like it,its like having two solutions for the same problem and one of the solutions just doesn't work for me,it is a mess. I very much appreciate boxing it is a very important part of my MMA game and i'm aware of the importance of the footwork too. I would like to hear your opinion on the situation ,maybe I`m misunderstanding the concept of what my coach is trying to teach us, maybe "his"way is more adequate for specific type of situations.If its possible to you to make a video on the subject it would be awesome.Thank you

      Hi there. I am not sure I understand too well. However, I like to keep it simple. When jabbing (left hand) you push off the front foot and you can move whilst throwing that punch...any direction. Obviously when pushing forward the back foot will do the push but the punch is triggered from the front foot. When throwing the right hand (back hand) you should be static. Do the movement before or after the punch. This means that when you throw the back hand you have maximum power as the feet are solid on one position. Move whilst jabbing, static whilst using the back hand. That make sense?

    ok the ego part is so true, I tried to spar with my friend who can be considered a cruiserweight while I am a mere superfly weight, tho massive weight difference aside, my friend really likes to stick in the paint even if his opponent is someone stronger than him, so unless you got dead straight accuracy to a liver shot you can't win against someone stronger than you.
    though this is only my idiotic case of trying to face a mountain, if yall only have like 1-2 weight difference this tactic will work but if yall if you are in the same situation I am in, full of ego, let me tell you, it won't just be a matter of skills and don't even think for a second that you will have a speed advantage, cuz if yall are similar in height it will also not matter.
    (I am 5'5 and 52kg and my friend is 5'7 and 90kg)

    How does this skinny guy attain such a powerful punch?
    Is it all about timing and the rotating of the hips and clenching the fist right at the moment of impact?
    Could you do a video on this if you have not already done so?

      Yes, power punching is mostly just like you said about perfect timing and rotation. Realistically power punching can be taught since it is all about drive and catching someone a the right time. That being said some skinny guys have physical attributes that may help in punching power. As you know rotation starts from the legs so sometimes you see smaller guys with larger calfs. Example would be fighters such as Manny Pacquiao or Prince Naseem Hamed. Hoped this helped.

      Mac McC We're saying big calves is usually symbol of people who hit heard. However technique and other psychical elements come into it. Take a modern example of Gennady Golovkin who is p4p one of the hardest punchers in the world. Do any part of his legs including calves stand out to you ? Not really.
      This is because the "payload delivery" is executed with such force from Golovkin's very strong abdominals through his arms and in particular his forearms which are very strong. Therefore some parts of the body are useful for power but combined with perfect technique you got strong punching power.
      Tommy Hearns for example was skinny and lanky but his huge size and reach meant his punches had more momentum on them. I hoped this explanation helped.

    wouldn't the shorter more stocky guy typically be the more powerfull puncher? Assuming its the same weight?
