  • Four Against Darkness is a pencil and paper solo dungeon-delving game that can be played using just one core rulebook. This series will go beyond that book, exploring a range of different supplements. This first video outlines my plan for the series, introducing some of the resources I'll be using.

My favorite supplement for the system is one called Wayfarers and Adventurers- this supplement allows for customization between the core classes when doing character creation. It also adds a lot of basic spells to the game, too. Another one you might want to also look into is Monster Deck volume 1 off of drivethrucards. These are basically level 2 or alternative monsters for the core book that come in large tarot size format with individual art. And once your heroes reach level 4, another fun one is one called Caverns of Chaos, this dungeon is meant for level 4 heroes and comes with similar tables like the core book and Fiendish Foes but is chaos themed.
Of minor note, Dens and Burrows has a mission where the boss is a mad gnome inventor. You may keep this in mind with the mission you mention in Zine one because that mission is also an evil gnome centric mission and this inventor might be good big bad to introduce into the campaign.

Thanks for commenting! I have the monster deck and Caverns of Chaos - just won't be using them in this campaign 🙂 I was not aware of Wayfarers and Adventurers - that sounds awesome - thanks for the tip. And good idea about the mad gnome inventor - I'll keep him in mind!

@@lone_adventurer It introduces d66+ Character Traits (my favorite add-on mechanic outside the core). About half offer a + buff to your character and the other half offer a - buff. In my opinion, Char Traits are probably the best way to handle Race + Class in the system- want a Halfling Rogue? Just give your normal Rogue the Lucky Char Trait and its as easy as that. It also introduces d66 Milestones- these basically are individual quests/goals for the hero. The cool thing is that Char Traits and Milestones can go together to create backstory for your adventurer. How I do this is that I use the Milestone to explain why the Character Trait exists. Maybe the Milestone about hunting a dragon and the Character Trait "Drunkard" explains that your Barbarian family/village /tribe was burned by dragons breath when you were out once hunting deer and you were too late running back to save anyone but got to hear their screams of agony as your ran through the woods. Now you wonder alone and the only way to not be maddened by their cries for help is to drowned them out and be intoxicated. Because both come with d66 tables your combos are basically open ended and are guaranteed to have different "warriors" "clerics" "wizards" "rogues" each time you play and to me the combos are so intuitive that you can basically whip a memorable backstory for a character in just 60 seconds of brainstorming. A companion book that introduced an additional d66 char traits is a book called Zealous Zouaves , these I felt were more inspired by mythology and legend (one trait clearly seemed lifted from Achilles and Homer's Illiad) it also includes a trait called Elf-Blooded - if you want a half-elf subclass. The book actually is packed with some additional cool stuff- like like Party Traits/bonus' and warriors get a whole slew of upgrades - it has some gameworld references in it so Greedy Gifts of the Guildmasters can also be seen as a campion to it (and I think that book came with like an additional 6 character traits specific to Guilds/patrons.
As a note to your campaign/video, will be very interested to see how you incorporate Twisted Dungeons and Lantern Zine one together or if you include the Gnome boss from Dens into your campaign. Of note, Warlike Woes in the back introduced a d66 twisted-esque final boss fights/boss liar table. May be of interest if wanting to build up to a big showdown final fight.

Wow, thanks for the info and in definitely sold now! It sounds like character traits / milestones adds real value to your games and I'll definitely look into these aspect of the game before too long!

This one is on my short list of solo RPGs to try out! I've picked out 10 to try and explore in the next calendar year - always good to hear more things about 4AD, which looks like it could be endlessly replayable as you add in more and more of their supplements.

There's so much available for 4AD, you could literally just play this one game (and some people do!). Awesome - I guess 2024 will be an adventurous year for you!

Love the channel. Have you tried Four Against the Great Old Ones? Currently trying to learn/play that one, it looks cool.

Thanks!! Yeah, I've considered it (and the horror one, I forget what it's called). Would love to give them a go - just need to find the time!

I really would like to watch the video as I have been interested in system, but the audio is so low that with everything turned up to eleven I can barely hear you and can't understand more ten 10% of the words =/

Yeah sorry about that - these older videos have poor sound. I'll try and get round to filming another 4AD series soon 🙂

@@lone_adventurer That would be grand, I have been having a lot of fun with d100 Dungeons but will move to 4AD next
