- Hybrid Inverter coolant change on a 2014 Ford C-max Hybrid SEL. It's recommended by Ford to change after 100 000 miles. This is the CVT HF35 Transmission and will be used in five electrified Ford vehicles :C-MAX Hybrid; C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid; Fusion Hybrid; Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid; and the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid.
"Just in case I spill some coolant" no punctuation needed. Is just gold
I learned everything I needed to felt confident enough after the video and the questions were perfect made and respond . Thank you for your help , let’s run this Ford fusión up to 500.000 ! 140 now and beautifully running
Saving me thousands of dollars in repairs!
4:30 i was still thinking why you had your neighbor's t shirt, more the need to mention that detail, 😂😂 then the message came up .
😁
I have air in my inverter coolant system. How do I bleed the inverter??
how do you know there is air in there? That system is not air tight and pressurized like the engine coolant system. I would think that the air over time gets out by itself...just check the reservoir for a few days and top off as needed
thank you for this!
You're welcome
Hello! Thanks! How much coolant I need for engine and inverter? Thanks!
Hi, the inverter needs 1 Liter (1.1 quarts). I don't remember how much exactly I needed for the engine, but I only got 1 gallon of the yellow motorcraft concentrated and mixed it 50/50 with distilled water. So I ended up with 2 gallons and still have some leftover.
So the engine coolant is the same as the inverter coolant?
correct
Hello, thank you for your video, I have a question, I have noticed that the reservoir beside the electric engine in my fusion hybrid is low and it has orange color fluid, can I open the reservoir and fill it with the green cooland liquid that ford is currently using? Also, sorry for this but why is it important to fill that reservoir?
Hi, yes you can open the reservoir cover and add fluid. But the current coolant from Ford is yellow and it is compatible with the orange.
If you run too low on coolant, you could be at risk of overheating the converter...but as long as you still see some in the reservoir, you will be OK.
Is it safe to simply add coolant if its low
yes.
Do u know what might happen if it is low? Mine was low and i think that may be the reason my gas mileage is bad. It was low….i got gas and it was saying 300 miles to empty….i usually get 500 or so. Then i filled the coolant.
@@86bookshot Nothing should happen if the inverter coolant gets a little low. Just top it off to the max line. (mine gets a little low as well all the time) I would use the motorcraft orange or yellow coolant (or equivalent approved stuff), because you're not supposed to mix different coolants.
The gas milage is not related to a low coolant level. The only thing that can happen if you get extremely low, is that the inverter will overheat.
@@TheFrankman711 i thought maybe the low coolant was a result of the high voltage batt not kick-on this making the mileage bad. Any ideas on what that could be then? Filling it up and all of sudden getting 200 less miles to empty.
@@86bookshot The only thing I could think off is that maybe when it's colder outside the car runs more on the gas engine. Also check your tires for correct pressure when they're cold. Recommended is 40 PSI cold.
Can I do this if I'm adding th yellow coolant or does it need to be flushed?
@@tiffanyearls9953 If you use the yellow fluid from Ford you can just add and don't need to flush
So what if my engine coolant is red? Can I still fill this reservoir ?
The original coolant was orange and they changed it to the new yellow coolant that is compatible with the orange. If yours is red, it might have been replaced with something else
So basically fill slowly turn the vehicle on and top off with vehicle on, just make sure the pump is running, do you need to wait for the thermostat to open like the engine coolant?
No, I don't think there is a thermostat for the inverter. It also holds only about 1 quart of coolant.
Will this work on a 2019 fusion hybrid and a 2013 fusion hybrid? I own 2 fusion hybrids.
yes, it should be even easier with the fusion because you have more space in the engine department
Can I add the same coolant that i use for the engine? I noticed the one you added to the inverter is orange as well.
Yes, they use the same coolant. Ford updated the orange coolant to a yellow one, but they are backwards compatible. If you still have orange one, you can use it. (i did as well)
Mine has the orange but its low, its never been changes the car has 87,000 its a 2015. Can i top it off with yellow?
@@tiffanyearls9953 Yes you can. They are compatible
Yo te go una ford escape hibrida 2009 , se calienta y se apaga , estaba viendo en un foro que puede ser la bomba electrica del anticongelante, sabes en que parte la lleva la escape hibrida 2009?
Sorry, I don't know
I have been putting power steering fluid in the reservoir. Have I damaged anything or can I just drain and add coolant again?
I would definitely drain it and put the correct fluid in it. It only holds a little more than 1 quart. Did you put a lot of power steering fluid in it?
About hslf a bottle because I noticed it was low. My friend said to take a turkey baster and suck as much out of the reservoir that I can but it looks like your method will be more effective@@TheFrankman711
Steering fluid is oil based and will eat the hoses and rubber seals in the cooling system. You need to extract the oil from the reservoir, then do a thorough flushing with a cleaner that will remove the oil. The oil will tend to stay floating above the coolant, but some will likely get mixed in, that's why you first want to suck the fluid out of the reservoir before draining, I'd remove the reservoir before draining the system so I can clean it separately. After that's clean, then you start the cleaning/flushing to get rid of oil in the system.
Does any of the require the vehicle to be flat
For the inverter coolant, NO. Only for the transmission fluid change the car should be level.
Did you have to disconnect hybrid high voltage for this? Is this what is considered a inverter coolant flush?
No, you don't need to disconnect the high voltage for this. I did not a flush here, just a drain and refill with new coolant.
Can I just add coolant, without having to change it? And it’s not a cmax. Just a fusion hybrid
Yes, as long as it is the same coolant that is already in it. I assume it's the orange motorcraft coolant...it got superseded with yellow coolant and is backwards compatible. (so it is OK to mix it)
Do you have to drain befor adding.coolant? There is appx 3% fluid in my reservoir
No, you don't have to drain before adding coolant...just make sure you use the same coolant that's in it or one that is compatible, like the motorcraft orange or yellow
@@TheFrankman711 thank you
What was the code for inverter cooler. I got the code U019f??
I didn't get any codes. I just changed it for maintenance reasons.
What is this for?
To keep the inverter cool
Do you leave the expansion tank cap open when you first start the car?
Yes. There is no pressure on the inverter coolant system anyways, and you can add more if needed
@@TheFrankman711 thanks, does the engine coolant run through the same pump as well?
@@beammeupscottsp7952 No, it's a different system. They only use the same antifreeze.
@@TheFrankman711 oh gotcha, I have a 2012 fusion hybrid and was going to try this myself next week, hopefully it goes as smooth as you make it look.
@@beammeupscottsp7952 Yeah, good luck .
So i noticed on my inervter reservoir. Mine has full cold and full hot fill lines. Which one did you fill it up too?
Since it is cold, I filled up to the cold line.
@@TheFrankman711 gotcha, appreciate the quick replys! Did you ever change your serpentine belt and timing chain at 150,000 as well?
@@beammeupscottsp7952 The C max doesn't have a serpentine belt, and I never changed the timing chain and I don't plan to.
@@TheFrankman711 interesting
@@TheFrankman711 yeah I’ve never heard anyone change a timing belt before
Hi, thank you for the video. Is this the MECS pump?
Yes, the pump for the inverter cooling cycle
Would you happen to know if this would be the same process for a 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid?
I believe so. You should have the same transmission model (HF35) but the 2010 Fusion needs the Motorcraft
Specialty
Green Engine Coolant = VC-10-A2 (US). 2.8 qt for inverter. Actually Ford Engineering has approved the use of yellow-colored Motorcraft® Yellow
Antifreeze/Coolant for the green colored coolant (WSS-M97B55-A)
@@TheFrankman711 Thank you!
@@TheFrankman711 I have my fusion sitting on ramps right now. Looks like it does have something similar to this vehicle shown in your video - luckily I was able to find cause of the green sticker shown. The invertor is just in a slightly different spot.
Will draining removing either hose going/coming from the invertor drain the whole system?
@@racequad9 Not sure how the setup on the fusion is, but it should be the lowest hose attached to the pump
here is a link to a photo for the correct hose

How did you get that clip off, mine is facing upwards and i can only reach it through bottom, i see you turned the clip back downwards when reattaching the hose 😂
Right, this was a bit of a challenge. Mine was facing upwards as well and I turned it around for future access. They have a special clip remover tool that would make it easy to remove the clip (don't know what it's called). I don't remember how I managed to get mine off, but it was challenging.
@@TheFrankman711 same, I eventually got it. Made sure it was facing down for next time. Mine still had some orange coolant left in it, drain and filled with the new yellow coolant so will drain and fill again soon just to get the rest of the orange coolant out.
