Think of Game of Thrones. It was incredibly popular. And the actors didn't wear lousy suits and cheap negligees. So it's not that the elaborate costuming in period pieces is the problem, right? It's the bad director.
I see some directors are trying to make opera relatable and current, but, in all honesty, this pathetic type of costuming does nothing of a kind. Ridiculous at best( there should be better ways. I pity the performers.
