Fellow Estonian here, that soup is rooster soup, Estonia is very heavy on soups, pea soup, noodle soups with meatballs, borsch (especially with sour cream). The dark bread is whole grain rye bread which in Estonian is called "Leib", we don't say rye bread, because in Estonian the word Bread is referred to white bread "Sai" and rye bread is "Leib" so saying "Rye Bread" in Estonian would be like saying rye wheat bread which it is not, because "Leib" is purely from rye. We have variations of rye bread, but pure rye bread is primarily Rye based.
On the can it also refers to Rye bread as "Eesti jõud" or Estonian strength, because rye bread is essential to Estonian culture like apple pie is to america. We eat Rye bread with almost every dish, you take a bite of rye bread and a bite of your dish. Pretty much every Estonian restaurant serves rye bread with your dish so traveling outside of Estonia and eating out feels incomplete to us, because they don't serve rye bread along with our dish. Rye bread is healthy and delicious.

zukodude487987 Actually "Eesti jõud" is a kind of manufacturing name. Yes the name is on bread, but also on lot's of desserts like chokolate, nuts and so on.

No utensils: because alot of european combat kits have what we Fins call a "Luha" a foldable spork that fits tight inside Your field messcup/can.
Bread: is a northern European type of whole grain bread, Which we call Real or Sour grain bread depending where You are.
    Your welcome :)

Unless something has changed in the last half a decade, Estonian soldiers should still have the set of knife, fork and spoon that we used to, no sporks. Also every soldier has the same stainless steel cooking set as the swedes do.

Firstly - I'm talking on behalf of all Estonians here - please don't call us Eastern European, we really don't want to be associated with the eastern countries. We are Northern European and everything about Estonia screams Northern Europe.
Secondly, Estonian military rations are actually illegal to sell, I know this because when I was a conscript we got a lot of these, and it actually even says so on the pack that it's illegal to sell, so I'm wondering why is foreignmre selling it.
All the negativity aside, the muesli and the chocolate are favorites among soldiers in Estonia, they are easy to eat, give a lot of energy AND they're delicious. The top canned food is Reisfleisch which is basically rice with chicken filet. Unfortunately you weren't so lucky to get that particular ration.
The bread is something that is a love it or hate it for most, I personally like it especially if you're exhausted from a long trip and haven't had much to eat.
Great video, and glad you liked it :)

In Estonia, and russia, the name bread is only used for the rye bread. The whitebread has a different name. After the fall of the soviet union, when we started getting hollywood stuff, I was puzzled at first when people referred to whitebread as bread, since locally the two have completely different names.
Also, you added sugar to your chicken soup, not salt :P

Do not put pepper on Kukesupp
Kukesupp is translated to Roostersoup and is ment as a mild soup for cold days (thats why no taste, but good for the body in really low temperatures, we get up to -35C here in some winters).
Yes that was a french patee, Estonian ones are more bland and strong meat taste and smell.
Only Estonian things there were the canned Mash potatoes and the soup.
Try some of the other Estonian MRE's also :) (i have seen 7 different ones, almoast all good for everyone)
Nr 2 i think might be one of the best (probably because i like the vanilla halvaa better than the other tastes).

I know Americans (of which I am one) are famous for not knowing much about the rest of the world, and I think that your vids are a good way of informing people about other cultures; but- Estonian is related to Spanish? Estonia is a Baltic state, and its language is related to that part of central Europe, and not to the Romance languages of the West like French, Italian, and Spanish,.

Seeams, like, they don't use much local Estonian manufacturers stuff any more.
Only things, that I recognise are: meatballs with mashed potatoes and noodle-chicken soup.
That manufacturers meatproducts are everywhere in our supermarkets, bbq, grill and so on.
Rye bread or black bread is also eveyday food on our table, but not in round shape.
Only countries, that still make real black bread are Latvia, Estonia and Finland.
It has really strong taste and lot more vitamins, than in "usual wheat white bread".

    • @taxpayer1980

Inventing is another thing. I know that Germany, Russia, Ukraine and many other slavic countries made dark bread long time ago, but nowdays, in the supermarkets, you usually get some strange shit, far away from traditional food.
But, sorry for offtopic, the MRE tries to make soldiers feel little bit closer to home, by adding somesort of rye based "cookies" to package as a reminder.

Eatin' on an Estonian menu 4 as I watch this! Nice mix of stuff: goulasch, chili con carne, tuna, and a can of some kind of canned seasoned rice and meat from Austria. Sides include a cereal bar, chocolate bar, some drink mixes, a can of pumpernickel bread, and raisin mix. Since there's no breakfast entree as such, I'm starting the day off right (hats off to Steve1989!) with the rice and meat entree as my main, the raisin mix as a sweet side, and coffee. Not bad! The rice is a bit dry but it's got a nice paprika flavor. Probably I'll spread the rest of the items out over the next couple of days so as not to overload with calories.

    • @dicio4001
      @dicio4001 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The soup is noodle/chicken soup so a basic one, usually creamy and bland.
Rye bread is also a thing in this North-Eastern area. They simply found a way to conserve it. I totally get why it tastes as "hard to explain" as it tastes like compact bread with 'something missing'. It doesn't have quite the consistency but its still ok.
I loved the coffee bags they introduced, heaps better than instants, you can smell the crushed bean.
As for the main and other meals they are basically local top store brand meals that people buy everyday anyway, so kind of a basic/logical choice to include brands people/conscripts already like and know.
Another mildly interesting fact is that these rations are "new ones" that got rehauled like ~3 years ago. Kind of like a public testing to make sure 100% of the stuff is edible for everyone. I think they actually did quite well as I would eat 100% of those things.

Great review of what is a really decent looking ration.
I was only thinking the other day if the Russians ha ever tried to include include Borodinsky bread in their rations. That canned bread looks like a fermented rye bread. Even left in the open air unwrapped, a loaf will last at least one week with no noticeable decrease in the quality of the product. This is a popular product in Russia and the Baltic states. I'd be eating it with the soup, but at home I eat it with quark cheese and pickles or sliced ham.
The meatball and potato stew looks fantastic. Add some re-constituted freeze-dried vegetables and there's a complete meal in itself. Also a bit more to it than the pure protein and fat load of a can of Russian tushenka.
The coffee bag is a bit of change, but its shelf-life will be a LOT shorter than the regular freeze-dried offerings we're used to seeing. Not a problem if consumed within it's use-by limit, of course. A little surprised to see two creamers in there. Most Europeans, to my knowledge at least, drink their coffee black and you wouldn't want to whiten a lemon tea. Maybe toss the creamers into the muesli or try and stir it into the potatoes.
    Now I'm hungry.

Hi....Nice looking ration!...I have a Estonia menu 7 to review in a little while.... nice to get a glimpse of to what to expect. It looks like the Estonia rations are a mix of French, German, Swiss and other European rations from what i can see. That muesli was in a recent French RCIR I reviewed and the bread was in a German Einmannpackung (but this one was in a plain and not decorated tin like in the German). I've even had the beverage powder in a British ORP.....so a right good mix of European tastes and textures!......many thanks for the insight....I'm now looking forward to reviewing the menu 7.....it would be great if you could Check out my channel (i've just reviewed a brand new, never seen before, 8 hour, brown bag, British Single meal ration)....ATB....Mick

LOL well not really. There are shops selling these in US. Beside that you can buy them on Ebay whenever you like. So what's Super Rare then? It's easier to buy them in the US then in Estonia so Spear please enlighten us about your views of super rare here or there.

You should mix up the food more. In most of your videos, you hardly ever mix up the food as that might be the reason why you don't taste all of the flavors. Just a suggestion but I do like your videos!

If they put it in a freaking box with proper padding, it might come in one piece. So sick of poor packaging.

    • @SpearM3064
      @SpearM3064 6 ปีที่แล้ว

I've had them fuck up a package that WAS in a box, with proper padding, that followed the post office rules exactly. So even that's not a guarantee. Plus, the biggest problem is not how Foreign MRE shipped it to Nathan, but how the seller shipped it to Foreign MRE. I saw the "unboxing" video from Foreign MRE, and almost the entire shipment had been busted up in some way.
