Wizard is the king. Best putter off the tee and on the green in the game. The biggest differentiator between the Wizard and its counterparts is the quality and the variability of the plastic. Wizards are available in literally dozens of plastic blends and they all feel like premium quality. Once I discovered the Wizard in RFF plastic back in 2008, my Aviars felt like junk toys. I think most Wizard enthusiasts would cite the feel of the plastic as their main reason for loving the disc.
I like throwing challengers a little better but it's so hard to get them in good, firm plastic like the old Cam Todds. Wizards are avaliable in so many awesome plastics and they last forever. I've got one I've been beating up since like 2008.
Yup... I still putt and use an aviar classic in DX max weight. However, the wizard is my goto for when I need to rip on a putter or its windy. I've tried to replace my aviar putter with wizards. I've tried warlocks and naked wizards. Love them, but they just dont fade perfectly straight like an Aviar. The plastic is amazing tho. If i had to play a single disc round, it would be a wizard. Now that I've a stack of 3s wizards, I found the naked wizard. My ideal single disc round would likely be an ugly pink, naked 3s wizard in max weight. Gotta lose or sell some wizards, before I can justify buying a naked stack tho..
I putt with the Gateway Devilhawk. I like the shallow rim with thumb track. Currently rocking a HempBlend and a Nylon Blend. I really enjoy the hemp blend.
I like the wizard for a throwing putter, but the Gateway Spear is on of my favorite understable fairway drivers for hyzerflips! Such an underrated disc
I putt with the Chief from Gateway. Honestly I chose this putter by the feel. I went to my local disc golf shop and held a lot of putters, this one felt the best. Works great for me.
I just got back from the Gateway Pro Shop today. Everyone at Gateway is just as excited to talk about Disc Golf as you are. I now putt with the Gateway Warlock. In the past, I've putt with a Wizard, PModelS, PA-3, P2, Rainmaker, and Magnets. These are good putters in their own way, but I can go to Gateway and get the exact plastic, firmness, weight, and run I want with many good options. Also, the Devil Hawk is an excellent upshot disc! Their new NXT Plastic is money for throwing discs.
I’ve discovered the Magic to be a great beadless putter option to hold its line. Got one in each of their plastics. The Shaman is a great all-around 3-speed that everyone should try.
I got a stack. I was hoping to replace my Dx aviar with them (love that 3s plastic). Oddly, I found the warlock flies exactly like my beloved wizard and not like the aviar. So odd, as it looks EXACTLY like an aviar. Im suspecting its the DX plastic that I dont like the feel of, but LOVE the flight of, that differs.
Great job on the video. I putt all Gateway. Wizard is my C1 hyzer (putts great very few roll aways) Chief (thin, 2/3 size of Wizard, great off the tee) Chief OS (FH, mild Anhyzer) Devilhawk (Very OS, laughs at wind, Approach, FH. anhyzer). AGL just came out with a putter called the Acacia and the bottom part of the mold is a wizard. Hand feel like a Wizard that has a very stable flight (3,4,0,0). Great for up putts.
My putting putter is a Wizard that I bought when they first came out. I'm still bagging it and using it every round. It's perfect and I just can't replace it.
4S Wizards for putting all day everyday, especially days that end in Y. My first discs I ever got were in a Gateway misprint box. Apex, Element, Voodoo, and a 4S Wizard were the discs I remember. Been using them for putting ever since.
One of my first discs was a magenta first run hard wizard. I have never felt plastic like it; stiff as a dinner plate and very tacky on the outside. Used it as my throwing putter for years. After finally losing it they had done away with hard and medium was their stiff plastic. I tried these but they had a dead flight. I liked the erasers but just not stiff enough. Sadly, I had to move on from the wizard but I still dream about that first run plastic.
I love the Warspear in NXT or Suregrip plastic. It is a stable approach disc that goes straight forehand and backhand and grips the ground and the chains. Very underrated
I putt with a Wizard SSSS because when I putt with it, it glides a little, and then it drops like a rock. Helps with comeback putts. Also, its OS doesn't let it turn over much if I throw it with a crappy release angle.
I was in my local shop a few years back perusing and came across a nylon rubber blend wizard, had heard good things about it so I figured I'd give it a try (putted with my buzzz at this point in time because I could never find a putter I liked). It instantly improved my putting and I've never looked back, I still have the same one as my main putter 4 years later. It's a shame they don't run Wizards in the nylon rubber plastic anymore, although thankfully I was able to find a backup for when this one's time comes to an end
I have 2 SSS Wizards, an Eraser, a Lunar Wizard and a glow Wizard. Been putting with them consistently for about a year. As a new disc golfer I liked the feel and look of the Lunar and picked it up not knowing what it was. It quickly became my go to.
All my SSSS warped and are basically useless now. I had them stored standing up with all my other discs. I've never had a problem with discs warping. No more Wizards for me.
The Wizard is nice, but deeper than I want in a putter. The Warlock has a different hand feel and works better for me. I'm doing a putt off between a few different putters soon and a couple Pure White Warlocks factor into that. Very firm indeed. My first Wizard years ago was an Eraser, and I do like the feel of that plastic. If I end up sticking w/the Warlock (have been putting w/L64 Pure's in Zero Hard w/ a Soft for approaches and Opto for driving), I will probably pick up a few other plastics to check out. I have some Wizards in other plastics and a Warlock in Firm, which is pretty much SS these days...I think. gateway plastic gets confusing honestly, and can be a reasonable reason to decide to not use them.
The Gateway Shaman is a great understable throwing putter. I was looking for a putter that did what the Sol does for me in the midrange. You can turn that over with a backhand... works great if you don't have a forehand.
I like Gateway! I have used the Wizard in hemp and ss. I have the Voodoo in 4s! The 4s Voodoo is really soft on the chains and just parks where it lands. I feel like I can putt with any putter and even throw completely different molds one after another with similar results. At around 30 feet and further flight characteristics become more significant and at around 100 feet quite different.
I use the pure white wizard for putting and I have a 4s warlock for shots that stick. I like a lot of their plastics but the main one for mids and drivers that stands out to me is Platinum. My platinum Illusion is awesome, reliable fade and skips and it barely has damage after a lot of use. Underrated brand and made in USA which is nice
I started bagging a PA-3 after putting mvp discs for 2 years. It's very similar to the wizard with the big bead. Comes off my hand cleaner and my C2 percentage increased
I putted with wizards in the 0's and transitioned to the ion in 2012. I love the big bead and deep substantial feel. I think the gyro may give a slight edge over the wizard. But i bet most of that is placebo effect.
Wizards are by far the most available gateway disc, and one of the most available discs in general. I am a huge fan of the variety of plastics, but also the similarity of other molds like the focus which effectively just opens up a greater variety of plastics to use in different situations.
I personally hate the hand feel of the Wizard but I did pick up a used premium plastic Shaman today to try as a throwing putter. We will see how it does.
Retro color glow wizards, boom, just visited the warehouse Tuesday and got a stack. Little less deep in the mold, do what they need to do it quick. Look out for these retro releases! These are the Wizards from origin to I think late 2000s or so.
I'm a newer player and not a great putter. I've tried a few different discs, but don't really practice much (something I ought to change!). I have an RPM Takapu and a Star Aviar3 that look and feel quite similar - I often putt both discs when out playing. They seem fine for me, but I haven't tried enough others to know!
Started discing using only a wraith go team wraitheon finally added a putter which was a hard aviar I couldn’t stand it and I eventually went to the magic from gateway tried that for a little and landed on the wizards in eraser plastic haven’t changed putters since I found these gems
To answer Greg’s question: I’m “sleeping on” on the Innova R-Pro Dart. 😀 I didn’t really pick it because of the plastic; it just fits my small(ish) hand well. I also like throwing rubber discs for putts because they don’t bounce away from the basket as far as plastic discs (less ground play). I actually have used the Elevation Discs Binx, a fairway driver, for putts with good results, as well as the Elevation Discs Koi putter (both in the ecoFlex rubber compound).
I have a stck of 1st run Koi's. They fold like the flops, but grip like the OG. Its my long anny to basket disc. The binx is when Im staring down a narrow set of trees for a straight shot I have doubts about. INteresting discs for sure, total pita to keep clean.
I putt with wizards and magics. Magics being non beaded wizards. My hidden gem from gateway is the illusion. Fantastic driver, I tend to compare it to the Innova wraith.
Your average Disc Golfer couldn’t name a single disc Gateway has other than the Wizard. Including myself. Not sure if it’s because their lineup is mid or the Wizard is G.O.A.T level. I putt with Bangers so I wouldn’t know.
Was gonna say this, I think it’s really down to the fact that it’s one of the only gateway discs people know. But that may double back to being because of how many people prefer it as a putter, and how long it’s been around
Gateway discs are not mid, in fact the mid ranges they offer (including from AGL RDG, FT who they manufacture as well) is one of the most complete and best mid range lineups that exists with excellent flights and hand feels. As someone who has tried a lot of Innova/Discraft/MVP/Prodigy, the only company that compares is the MVP family disc mid range lineup. I'd say if you haven't tried gateway and you're open to toying around with discs. I'd give it a go for sure. I like a Gila for my really OS, Prophecy for the slightly OS, Spruce for the Straight and Guide for the US at least until I beat a Spruce into that position. The Gila and Prophecy do have a unique shape that they share the bottom on that I like. If that shape isn't for you then I'd switch the Gila for a Beech and Prophecy for a Magnolia
You really need to be practicing with the same putter. And you should probably also weigh them to make sure they're pretty close to each other. You should also start at 10-15 feet and move back one step at a time after hitting 8-10 in a row. And then if you miss three in a row you have to take step forward. The Wizard is arguably the best putter on the market.
All 5 putters are 174-176g, and all putts are being made from 27ft because that's how long my porch is. I'm sure there are better ways to practice, but this experiment isn't necessarily about practice.
I'm a big fan of the Aviar Driver mold from Innova. I putt with JK Aviars in the winter, and Nexus in the summer. It baffles me however that the mold is the Aviar DRIVER and they don't offer a stock run in their Star or Champion plastic.
Apex distance driver & journey distance driver, the assassin fairway driver, the spear all fly great I have all in my bag! I'm a GATEWAY & DISCRAFT only thrower!!!!
I actually reached out to MVP because I want them to make the watt in electron soft. Personally, electron soft isn't even soft enough in my opinion, but as I understand it, they're going to be revamping that plastic soon to make it softer. So I'm looking forward to seeing if that happens but the Watt has been a phenomenal throating putter and everybody that I know that has one or has thrown one loves it. Eagle McMahon actually has it on the bench for when he needs it so I feel like it has a hell of a lot of potential if they expanded its plastic range the way they do with the NV or the proxy
The question for me has been why one of the pioneers in the game is so often left out of disc comparisons and discussions. The wizard is great but I like the warlock more, my favorite gateway disc and my favorite straight driver overall is the spear…the Diablo is also a great overstable fairway. I like their putter blends but the new driver blends like cobalt and platinum are also nice.
Gateway has a stacked putter line up. They have a few very good mids as well, and their drivers have gotten way better over the years.. I don't why people sleep on everything but the Wizard.. probably Gateway's lack of top pro sponsorships. That would be my guess.
No one talking about the Gateway Voodoo? I’ve used a SS Wizard for over 10 years but an MVP Neutron Watt replaced it as my main. Just ordered a super silly stupid soft one
I must admit I wrote that comment not far enough into the video.. Personally I’ve barely heard about the Wizard except for Scott Stokely (I think??) used to throw it and mentioned it in one of his videos. As you said the Wizard far predates the Reko (approved in desember of 2015). Also the Reko with it’s 3-3-0-1 rating seems a lot straighter and with a smaller bead
Reko is just another Aviar clone, although it's a clone of the Aviar Driver, and just about all the other Aviar clones are from the putter version, which has a lower height and slightly smaller shoulder.
I would love to see more companies take on the trash panda mentality, no stamp discs in recycled plastic with some plastic variety. Eventually we all get rid of discs anyway, why not make them easier to recycle?
I really hope you are trying to fix your putt and not just doing what you have been doing 10,000 times. You will never break that muscle memory if you don't fix your bad habits.
Gateway Shaman. one of the most slept on discs in the sport. anyone can throw it. super versatile.
Great C-2 and beyond disc imo
In my opinion most are the same. It's just about looks.
Great, now im gonna have to run to the pro shop and by a small stack of wizards. U got me, Six Sided Discs! 😅
Gateway putt and approach discs rule. Their mid selection is totally slept on.
The Reptilian mids they make are amazing too, if you like beaded winged mids
I putt with the Gateway Devilhawk. I like the shallow rim with thumb track. Currently rocking a HempBlend and a Nylon Blend. I really enjoy the hemp blend.
How have I never thought to put a net behind my basket when I'm practicing putting? It wasn't the point of this video but y'all just changed my life😅
I like the wizard for a throwing putter, but the Gateway Spear is on of my favorite understable fairway drivers for hyzerflips! Such an underrated disc
I putt with the Chief from Gateway. Honestly I chose this putter by the feel. I went to my local disc golf shop and held a lot of putters, this one felt the best. Works great for me.
Love the Chief and Shaman for putt and approach.
Chief is the Wizard mold, just 1/4" thinner
I had no idea. Thanks for the info.@@connors83
The newest AGL putter, the Acacia, is the Wizard bottom paired with the Ponderosa flight plate. Wizard feel/bead with a straighter flight 👍
I just got back from the Gateway Pro Shop today. Everyone at Gateway is just as excited to talk about Disc Golf as you are. I now putt with the Gateway Warlock. I’ve discovered the Magic to be a great beadless putter option to hold its line.
Got one in each of their plastics. The Shaman is a great all-around 3-speed that everyone should try.
Wizard was my first real disc.
The Prophecy is impressive!!
No mention of the Warlock? The beadless variation of the Wizard. I'm here to show some love!! ❤🔥
My first putter! Bought it cause I thought the stamp was cool lol
Warlock is the goat
@@Uncle_Muscles Right? 🥏🐐
Wizard in smugglers coffee is my favorite putting putter!
Also, the Wizard actually gets thicker on the flight plate toward the rim. Early gyro.
Great job on the video.
I putt all Gateway. Wizard is my C1 hyzer (putts great very few roll aways) Chief (thin, 2/3 size of Wizard, great off the tee) Chief OS (FH, mild Anhyzer) Devilhawk (Very OS, laughs at wind, Approach, FH. anhyzer).

My putting putter is a Wizard that I bought when they first came out. I'm still bagging it and using it every round. It's perfect and I just can't replace it.
Special Blend and Pure White were my favorite blends when i putted with them
4S Wizards for putting all day everyday, especially days that end in Y. My first discs I ever got were in a Gateway misprint box. Apex, Element, Voodoo, and a 4S Wizard were the discs I remember. Been using them for putting ever since.
I love Gateway! I bag 3 wizards, a Demon, a Blade (great disc!), and 2 Realms. Dave McCormick is an OG. Give them a try!
They've recently come out with a "Retro" line. Might wanna check it out.
I love the Warspear in NXT or Suregrip plastic. It is a stable approach disc that goes straight forehand and backhand and grips the ground and the chains. Very underrated
Gateway Demon is an awesome very OS mid 👍👍
I putt with a Wizard SSSS because when I putt with it, it glides a little, and then it drops like a rock. Helps with comeback putts. Also, its OS doesn't let it turn over much if I throw it with a crappy release angle.
Have you tried putting with the "Magic"? In 3S or 4S it is just fantastic.
Try an RDG Serpent. Magic with the groove top. Makes it more predictable, super neutral flier.
Devil hawk is such an amazing overstable approach disc, super torque resistant
Your commentary is top tier 💪
I was in my local shop a few years back perusing and came across a nylon rubber blend wizard, had heard good things about it so I figured I'd give it a try (putted with my buzzz at this point in time because I could never find a putter I liked). The spear is also slept on hard.
Gateway has such an underrated lineup. I currently bag the Chief, but the Apache was my first disc. The Blade and the Warrior are great.
All my SSSS warped and are basically useless now. I had them stored standing up with all my other discs. I've never had a problem with discs warping. No more Wizards for me.
Just don’t do that and throw good discs. Aka the wizard
The Wizard is nice, but deeper than I want in a putter. The Warlock has a different hand feel and works better for me. I'm doing a putt off between a few different putters soon and a couple Pure White Warlocks factor into that. Very firm indeed. I have some Wizards in other plastics and a Warlock in Firm, which is pretty much SS these days...I think. gateway plastic gets confusing honestly, and can be a reasonable reason to decide to not use them.
Diamond Hemp is my favorite. The shaman is slept on the most.
The Gateway Shaman is a great understable throwing putter. I was looking for a putter that did what the Sol does for me in the midrange. You can turn that over with a backhand... works great if you don't have a forehand.
The medium wizard was my favorite. I hear they have the retro out but I like stiff putter plastic. We'll see.
I’m in St. Louis and do custom stamps with gateway so biased but consistently throw the wizard, warlock, chief, warrior, spear, blade, and journey.
Lunar Wizard... Warrioir, ELement, Realm, Spell, Ether, Blade
I like Gateway! I have used the Wizard in hemp and ss. I have the Voodoo in 4s! The 4s Voodoo is really soft on the chains and just parks where it lands. I feel like I can putt with any putter and even throw completely different molds one after another with similar results. My platinum Illusion is awesome, reliable fade and skips and it barely has damage after a lot of use. Underrated brand and made in USA which is nice
i was a junior in HS. i feel you! LOL. wizard also boasts like 30 different plastic types? most versatility of any putter in the market IMO
I started bagging a PA-3 after putting mvp discs for 2 years. It's very similar to the wizard with the big bead. Comes off my hand cleaner and my C2 percentage increased
It’s the Warrior for me, but needs better plastic offerings. I can beat a sure grip disc in before I get to the back 9
Also. In my circle… Wizards are almost strictly used as throwing putters
DGA: D-line, Granite, Stone, Splatter Stone, Pro-series (Mcbeth's newer soft blend the luna sported)
In reality, when it comes to putting within 30ish feet, all that matters is how it feels in your hands.
Started discing using only a wraith
go team wraitheon finally added a putter which was a hard aviar I couldn’t stand it and I eventually went to the magic from gateway tried that for a little and landed on the wizards in eraser plastic haven’t changed putters since I found these gems
The RPM Tui is a good putter for smaller hands. Thin and slightly grippy.
You're not wrong. In my limited experience, though, once people give Gateway an honest try out, a disc or two always seems to make that player's bag.
I can name multiple!😳😇😇
Magic and warlock. Bammm!
The realm is the perfect destroyer clone
I know right. That disc is so fast.
My first league ace was a SSS Wizard. $225 🤐
I want the d-line flex 1 from discmania to stock and softer for the p1
You really need to be practicing with the same putter. And you should probably also weigh them to make sure they're pretty close to each other. You should also start at 10-15 feet and move back one step at a time after hitting 8-10 in a row. And then if you miss three in a row you have to take step forward. The Wizard is arguably the best putter on the market.
All 5 putters are 174-176g, and all putts are being made from 27ft because that's how long my porch is. I'm sure there are better ways to practice, but this experiment isn't necessarily about practice.
You just answered my question about the putting distance, Greg! I was wondering why you didn’t go out to 10 meters (Circle 1 boundary).
Shaman. Also Mystic and Element are excellent mids.
I'm a big fan of the Aviar Driver mold from Innova. I putt with JK Aviars in the winter, and Nexus in the summer. It baffles me however that the mold is the Aviar DRIVER and they don't offer a stock run in their Star or Champion plastic.
lol what? Innova, cmon now.
Apex distance driver & journey distance driver, the assassin fairway driver, the spear all fly great I have all in my bag! I'm a GATEWAY & DISCRAFT only thrower!!!!
I bag a voodoo and magic both in 4s. 4s plastic saved my life.
The new Electron Soft is definitely softer than previous blends. But good shout on the Watt, they may want to avoid competition with the Nomad.
I putt with pure white chief os from gateway. I stopped using judges and made the switch!
I put with the gateway magician and love it. But the only reason I do is I thought I was buying 2 wizards
Give us another WizardX run!
Yo the wizard and I are the same age!
Seasoned Voodoo SS
The Wizard SS is money!
Gateway has a stacked putter line up. They have a few very good mids as well, and their drivers have gotten way better over the years.. I don't why people sleep on everything but the Wizard.. probably Gateway's lack of top pro sponsorships. That would be my guess.
I miss the RFF Wizard.
No one talking about the Gateway Voodoo? I’ve used a SS Wizard for over 10 years but an MVP Neutron Watt replaced it as my main. Just ordered a super silly stupid soft one
Do they offer a breadless wizard?
Believe that’s what the Warlock is
Check out the Warlock or Voodoo. WIZARDS w/o beed or small beed.
The Chief is a further flying slim (2/3 size) Wizard
Warlock. Looks like an aviar, flies like a wizard...
It looks so much like the Reko from Kastaplast 😮
No the reko looks like a wizz
I think the Reko has a much smaller Bead and is definitely shallower than the Wizard, and yes, the Wizard predates the Reko by quite a long time.
I think another thing is, it has a wizard on it. Lol. I like it more because of that. Maybe a little bit of magic can help those putts

I would love to see more companies take on the trash panda mentality, no stamp discs in recycled plastic with some plastic variety. Eventually we all get rid of discs anyway, why not make them easier to recycle?
While i am a big fan of trash panda, i question one concept. Have you or anyone you know ever thrown a disc in the trash?

Warlock > Wizard. Beadless 4 lyfe
My guess is your percentage of putting will be…25%
I really hope you are trying to fix your putt and not just doing what you have been doing 10,000 times. You will never break that muscle memory if you don't fix your bad habits.
