Dude that would be AWFUL/AMAZING news about the turbo! Like I always hear don’t think of it as a broken part think of it as a chance to upgrade to something better haha! Also I think an upgraded stock location turbo is the way to go!! Then do some comparison dyno pulls
Ok. So I saw the housing cracked and I thought it wasn’t too bad. But after seeing the shaft play. Definitely replace the turbo with an FP red or a black. I went FBO on my X and it was a giant PITA.
Definitely a mindset thing! Gotta look at obstacles as opportunities! I really do like the idea of the dyno comparison between turbos on an Evo X with FBO and a stock block...🤔- Charlie
See this is EXACTLY the reason why my Cast investment manifold is still sitting in the box for the past month! I'm waiting to buy the turbo to do the entire project at once! No way in hell I'm going to just upgrade the manifold with the OEM turbo still siting in there!
@@maperformance I believe when I ordered the manifold Tom was helping me. I think that was his name... he helped narrow down some turbos for the goal I had in mind. I believe it is the... ATP Twin-scroll
This actually helps alot. I have a 2011 X and I'm in the the "refresh and build" stage. Started with the wheels, tires, and coilovers. Now I'm looking at intakes. Trying to open everything up before adding power and fueling. Keep it up!
Hell yeah man!! Hopefully your car is in better shape than this one was when we started! I'd also start looking at tuners that can get your car tuned right after you add that intake! Hope you're enjoying the build!! - Charlie
@@maperformance I’m at the “I’ve done everything else” stage but beached with a cracked manifold. Almost went full Borg Warner but it fell through. So I’ve decided to grab an MAPerforance manifold. I feel like maybe I should have just went v band but many advise sticking with stock frame turbo. So there that is. I’m just wondering, since we gonna do the timing chain, engine is coming out. I’m tempted just to order new turbo and cooling upgrades (if fully necessary immediately 🤔) i already have a ctec downpipe. Sadly not a screamer. Would you guys have any recommendations on this? See I’ve heard good things about these “arashi” turbos. & my thinking goes that with the money saved there: that could go on a rod job; make it safe. & maybe I can upgrade intercooler/piping & throw in a dual fuel pump as it’s only like £59. If anyone feels like they have any input it would be greatly appreciated. I obviously would rather not spend the money right now… but I am not a fan of doing things twice. Thanks all ✌️
I’ve upgraded the manifold, downpipe, and turbo. Removing and replacing all these parts approximately 3 times now has been terrible. I feel your pain. You should upgrade to an MHI-18k. On flex fuel I’m making about 475 to the wheels on a mustang dyno. Well worth all of the headache in the end!
Yeah I talked to a few people about this who've done it multiple times and they all said the same thing haha Even if you go into it expecting the worst, expect it to be worse. lol It's worth it in the end, but def not a "fun" job to do... Appreciate the turbo feedback too!! - Charlie
Awee maaaan. And I thought this would be a fun weekend. Gearbox oil dropped, timing chain done, oil change done. Ayc done, coil overs done. Underseal done again. Ahh now for the fun stuff… ah damn. According to this video it shall be sh*t 🤣☠️☠️🤦♂️
If you pull all the exhaust studs you can remove the manifold without the turbo. With that said if you need to ever pull it again you have to double nut all the studs again. I had to do it twice now on mine.
Hahahaha! Love you guys but yeah that first video about swapping manifolds definitely glossed over how difficult this install is. It doesn't matter how many times you have done it, because those exhaust bolts will fight you every step of the way!!!!
All I kept thinking about when I was installing this is how in the original video Erik said this should take about an hour. 😂(Like hell this should take about an hour...) hahaha - Charlie
How about a refresher build? There are a lot of these cars out there, getting some age on them and not everyone can afford to replace a worn stock turbo with a 4-8k upgrade. Instead of no limits build, how bout a working man's with the best bang for the buck parts MAP carries?
@@anthonymaldonado8018 Yea BW was at a FormulaD event 1 year and I was talking to the guys and they were trying to get me on a kit they had, would have been cheaper than the stock frame but I wanted my ETS parts. Maybe you can end up selling if you still want to swap.
@@jaybobevo unless i come into like 5k i can spare, the cheapest route is to just get a new 7163. I can get one for around 2k shipped and not have to worry about a retune, just install. The turbo has about 40k miles on it so I think the seals are starting to go. Starting to see gray smoke when i come to a stop.
Looking good, the build is getting really exciting now! Unrelated, I see you guys carry a Carbon Fiber Drive Shaft in your website. Have you considered this for the build? Would love to see it on there, personally.
I actually haven't started thinking about driveshafts for the build yet. But I would also love this on the build! Glad you're enjoying the build! Thanks for the feedback! - Charlie
Whenever you get the chance always upgrade!. Make the work worth it!! I just got my MAP tubular manifold and GT spec turbo from Turbo Parts Canada. I'm trying to hold out for that new flex fuel kit. I do have one question. Why did you upgrade the fuel injectors if you were originally planning to keep the stock turbo?
Its not all bad don't worry haha. I did the 1st set of upgrades to full bolts on after 2 years of having the car stock. did the FBO in 1 shot so we didn't have a lot of back and forth, took a week and did it in the drive way. For working with no lift or air tools, we got it done, 1 bolt on the DP was annoying and the turbo has 1 bolt on the block in the most annoying spot, but overall wasn't bad. Check out www.evolutionm.net/ a ton of good install guides if needed.
Why would you change the AMS DP? isn’t it a really great DP. Why would you change it for something that would possibly be the same performance wise. 🤷🏽♂️
So, it is an amazing DP (actually one of the most popular dp's for the Evo X) and normally I wouldn't have taken it off in exchange for something else but we already had a few different brand new options set aside for the build. And a plan for the used parts. (I will say that one of the new ones we have set aside is actually an AMS DP lol) - Charlie

either use the map t3 kit or have fp make you a BB fp red with there xona UHF exhaust wheel. im sure they have a spare exhaust housing laying around
was in the same situation, ended up purchasing the stock frame 3071 gen 2

The injector choice was kinda a 'future proof' choice. Shouldn't have to change them ever again for pretty much any power we want to make.
Can stock injectors and fuel pump handle full bolt ons? This includes stock turbo.
