    I've been skinny my whole life. I was 6ft & ~145 lbs from the age of 18 to 40. I started crossfit at 40 years old. I went to class 5 days a week and did a bunch of extra work after every class. I more than doubled my caloric intake (I was undereating and eating the wrong stuff), and in a year I put on 10 lbs of muscle. After another year I put on another 10 lbs of muscle. I've been at my goal weight of 165 for about 3 years. Yes, you can build muscle doing crossfit, but you have to do more than just the class as they emphasis in this video.

      What kind of extra stuff you did at the gym ? Machines ?

    • @AnalogDave
      @AnalogDave 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@EGA_386 They would have extra stuff each day on the whiteboard other than the wod for us to do before or after class. We also had a strength class on Saturdays before the partner wod. It was usually either Oly lifts or accessory work for Oly lifts, and squats. We'd also do grunt work: sled push/pulls, sandbag work, odd object carry. Just all sorts of stuff. Basically all the stuff you see Kristi do. I never used a machine.

    Great video! I just started CrossFit style workouts with a personal trainer late this summer and finally got the courage to go to a CrossFit gym a few months ago. At 53, I'm amazed at the change in my body and I feel fitter and stronger now than when I ran marathons many moons ago. Thanks for the great videos and inspiration you two. They are teaching me lots and definitely keeping me motivated!

    I am a recently newly certified personal trainer and have three kids. I used to be perfect weight but not enough muscle I desired. Now I have a lot of muscle definition but having children has done a lot to my body and I’m now 13.9 BMI and I am frustrated cause I need it to go up to a healthier level; but my goal is to tremendously build up and bulk in the right and healthy way. Videos like this really spark my drive and motivate me cause I’m 119-120 and to see that thumbnail and see the difference that’s possible, I’m totally fired up.

    Great video! I especially appreciate how you both talked a lot about specificity. Too much in the CrossFit space, I’ve noticed constant variance be emphasized. That’s well and good to a point. Especially for general population who are just looking for GPP. If you want to progress further than that. You have to be more specific when it comes to strength and skill development.

    • @BernhardKohli
      @BernhardKohli 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that's a great point - and variation doesn't mean random variation. For me, one of the biggest benefits of variation is that you can train more overall volume without hurting yourself.

I’m trying to gain 10 lbs of lean muscle and hearing that it takes years is very affirming. I have my nutrition on lock but sounds like I definitely need to add more weight lifting. Thank you both for such great insight!

    • @mitchkatz4918
      @mitchkatz4918 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      maybe your goal is too specific/limiting for the exercise modality you have chosen( practice good form and eating and sleeping right to reduce injury )maybe instead of your 10 lbs of lean muscle might be better if you muscular circumferences were measured with a tape measure and remeasure in 3 months to ascetain changes, may be needing to alter rest/ diet more. take pictures, to ascertain current and periodically to ascertain any changes- may be a way to encourage you further. lean muscle may be ok but could be a fickle machine or other reasons for a poor read/ measure and having the other measurements may be a way to substantiate your improvement. taking three measurements over 3 day period and average your scores may be beneficial too!

Struggling to gain muscle but I did just eat 4 chocolate chip cookies. I also know WODpalooza is soon and I’m in south Florida. Here I am saying next year i want to compete 🙃 and then you say basically say it’s not that easy to develop those skills and true ability. So thanks for a more realistic expectation. CrossFit is good if you do it right. Some of the lifts are not meant for repetition. The more you lift the more exhausted you become and it starts to mess with your form. Listen to your body. Swallow your pride, lose the ego and accept your limits. If your dead tired and can’t do anymore, move on to something else. Don’t keep trying and end up hurting yourself. Most CrossFit competitors get injured because of their damn egos. They tell themselves, one more rep when they can barely stand up straight due to how tired they are

      Weight is irrelevant. The goal is your muscle to fat ratio aka your bodyfat percentage. Shes a top tier crossfit games athlete who probably has 10% bf. At the same exact weight you wont look like her if you have 35% bf. I think shes like 135lbs btw. Anyway, your goal should be to get as strong as possible, while eating adequate protein and let the weight fall where it may. Hope this helps! If you need more specifics @builtongodsrock

    The premise of crossfit shows its the worst way to build muscle. All you have to do is go to any crossfit gym and 99% of the members have dad bods or are “soccer moms.” Constantly varied is not whats needed to build muscle. You need to progressively overload and get stronger at the same movements and the same exercises over and over. You should not change your workouts everytime. Soreness is a sign of a new stimulus to your body or that you have done too much. It doesn’t necessarily mean the exercise is effective. With that being said i am a crossfitter who loves crossfit but what I recommend to my clients who do crossfit but want to look good is to incorporate some bodybuilding 2-3 times a week and of course adequate protein and the right amount of calories on top

    A lot of unscientific bro science going on here. Some people genetically find it easier to get stronger and more muscular. Others are always going to struggle. There’s no foolproof recipe that’s going work for everyone unfortunately. Most people are going to have to settle for getting a lot fitter, a little stronger and maybe adding a little muscle.
