    In April 2021, India began registering some of the highest numbers of Covid-19 cases in the world. When that happened, the demand for life-saving oxygen soared too. But India wasn’t able to keep up, adding avoidable deaths to a second wave of Covid-19 that has devastated the country. The oxygen shortage seemed to have caught India off guard. That made the news in this pandemic, but India has run out of oxygen before. So why does this keep happening?

  • @mayukhdatta4017
    @mayukhdatta4017 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    As an Indian that saw the ground reality of what happened during the past 3 months, here are what we think the main reasons are for the catastrophe that the second wave was-
    1.The Kumbh Mela- One of the biggest human gatherings on earth, the Kumbh is one of the holiest festivals in the Hindu Calendar taking place every 4 years. In light of every other major festival being suspended, it came as a shock when the government (Hindu) allowed the mela to go on in full fledge. This was a super spreader that kickstarted the second wave
    2. Bengal Elections- The WB General elections were supposed to be one of the most hotly contested political elections with the party ruling the center taking on one of the opposition strongholds. In this political fervour and enthusiasm, the Prime Minister lost the plot. Mass rallies and gatherings acted as another super spreader.
    3. Illiteracy- Let's face it, while Indians happen to be some of the most intelligent people, the people in rural areas remain to be illiterate. This had two effects-
    a-the people underestimated the virus. In fact, many people in villages and small towns refused to socially distance and wear masks
    b-the people fail to see through the government's rhetoric. The people, charged with the enthusiasm of elections, flocked to the rallies. When the government gave absolutely ludicrous reasons for their covid mismanagement, the people ate it up.
    4.Oxygen- The supply chain issue, as depicted by vox
    5.Negligence- Imagine this, an airplane arrived at a military airport at Delhi to deliver oxygen to a hospital before it runs out in a mere 30 minutes. The driver has not slept much as he is running out of time. What happens at the airbase? The local leaders turn up to celebrate the arrival of the new oxygen. The celebrations take 30 minutes, leading to 4 deaths.
    The saddest part, this is not made up, this actually happened.
    6.Hoarding- There were reports of dealers who used to supply Oxygen to non medical small industries, of hoarding oxygen in their warehouses. Plus, reports of forgery of remedesivir doses etc worsened the situation.
    Make no mistake, what happened here was no accident, it was cold blooded murder by the ones in power.

    • @lif6737
      @lif6737 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow, that story of local leaders delaying the delivery of desperately needed oxygen in order to use it as a political celebration is absolutely disgusting and depressing. Thanks for the explanation, though. I remember hearing stories of countries like India doing so well as local media criticized our government’s response to the pandemic here in Canada, when the third wave struck Indian so ferociously I was in shock, but I never really got a good explanation as to why things changed so drastically for the country. All these points really help put everything into perspective.
