The song is about the 1916 Easter Rising, an armed revolution by Irish nationalists during the First World War the rebels were plagued with bad luck throughout the planning of the Rising however it went ahead anyway and on Easter Monday 1916 the Irish Tri-Colour was raised above the GPO in Dublin and a proclamation was read declaring an 32 county Irish Republic the Rebels numbering under 2,000 held out for five days against overwhelming forces and by the end much of Dublin was destroyed the leaders of the Rising were executed by firing squad which included a cripple, a man who was married an hour before his death, and a socialist who was injured in the Rising and had to be shot in a chair. The repercussions for that rising led to the eventual birth of the Irish Nation through a bloody war of Independence
