    After 7 years and two updates, the Kia Soul is in a class of its own. Boxy competitors like the Scion xB and Nissan Cube are dead, and although the car was refreshed for 2017, only the most devoted Kia enthusiast could spot the differences. The Soul lineup does add a new trim for 2017, and it’s called the ! (Kia says it’s pronounced “Exclaim”). That’s the car I reviewed and the most powerful Soul ever made, because Kia turbocharged the entry-level engine, upping the horsepower to 201-and the price to at least $22,600.
    Still, no matter how pleasant it is, the Soul fails to excel in any particular category. For instance, Kia calls it a crossover, but all-wheel drive (AWD) isn’t on the Soul’s long list of potential options. And it has a decent amount of front and rear legroom, but the shorter and narrower Honda Fit has 3.2 more cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded than the Soul. The Soul is also lacking when it comes to fuel efficiency. I averaged just under 25 mpg in a week of combined city and highway driving, which isn’t great for such a small car.
    But who cares? The Soul isn’t supposed to be a sports car. It’s supposed to be a car that toes the line between fun and practical-and it’s fine at that. Read more on CarGurus: cargur.us/dPkH2
    ** CarGurus' reviewer inaccurately quoted the price of the automatic transmission for the base trim of the 2017 Kia Soul as $1,500 in this video. The correct price is $1,600. **

    I have a 2018 Kia Soul Turbo and I love it. This is my second Kia Soul. I average around 29.7 MPG with a healthy mix of city and highway driving. Before I bought mine I thought I’d give the competition a fighting chance with test driving cars like the Jeep renegade, the Mazda CX-3, the Honda Fit, and the Chevy Trax. The Kia Soul Turbo has the most horsepower with the cheapest price tag. I also couldn’t say no to the warranty. 👍 I definitely recommend the Kia Soul to anyone needing a little more room with a reasonable price tag and from what I’ve experienced. Exceptional reliability.

      Tyler Kingsley compact, so easy to drive and easy to park. Boxy, so lots of room inside and safe (high safety rating). 10 year warranty with high reliability. Looks uniquely good. Seating is high so great visibility. Increbible value for the price.

    Just traded in my 2016 Hyundai Elantra for a 2015 Kia Soul. I thought I was going to be very disappointed, but I am saving $130 month in payments, and I must say, this car has really grown on me! SO much fun to drive, and I love the look! I dunno what's up with this reviewer but he makes the Soul out to be some crappy assed car, when in reality, it's the best car in its segment (compact cars), because you get a lot of room in such a small package! He actually compared the Soul to the Prius and Civic? Really?? Not even the same at all, pal!! And the Prius is a POS! I HATE those cars!

    Dude, I bought my 2015 when I was 59 Exclaim, the whole sha-bang for over $27000 and the dealer paid the tax of nearly $900 and I got a $1500 rebate to boot LOVE the shape of it! Front wheel drive does well in the snow and though I don't have the turbo, mine handles so well. Why didn't you mention PAUSE, FF and REWIND on the Sirrus Radio on 6 of the 12 pre set stations? LOVE that TOO. If I wanted to buy a Golf and disappear in the traffic, I would have!! You are one bitter, grumpy middle-aged man. OH by the way, I don't know how YOU drive, but I can be a lead foot on green light pullouts and I get 24mpg in town and 29 on the highway.

      That's fair enough, but those are HORRIFIC numbers for any car nowadays, especially compacts. Most AWD compact SUV have better numbers.

    • @shawnlee664
      @shawnlee664 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      George Lurye not terribly, what numbers are you talking about? But is it safe as soul? Your tin can car could go 100 miles per gallon but in accident dead. Easy to drive and park as soul with lots of room inside? Boxy design minimizes size for maximum volume capacity. Trade off is little lower Mpg due to being less aerodynamic.

    I love mine.It's a rocket.No blind spots.Got the upgraded stereo and navigation system.Went with the plus automatic,Do not need a turbo in this car.I can't imagine 201 hsp in this .I'd go with the plus with the upgrades.Even has push start.It was $22,900 with shipping brand new..Bought it yesterday with 14000 miles on it,one owner.Great find.The car still has plenty of warranty but i bought the platinum extended warranty which covers navigation.,camera and all even a/c, and all electrical problems too .72 months,100000 miles for 28.00 a month extra. If you buy a used one get the platinum because the others don't cover electrical issues and a/c in these tend to go out around 65,000 miles.They will tell u its a electrical issues so not covered.Stay clear of the 2010 to 2016 models they can catch on fire.I am sure there is a recall on these years but KIA fixed for 2017.

    hi, I think u have the wrong soul, I previously drove a VW cabrio convertible and recently bought a 2017 kia soul, and I LOVE IT!!! people are not always looking for big cars, some people are trying to upgrade from small cars without going to big for their comfortability like some of the other recommended cars in the video. dirt cheap cars are in junk yards while a kia soul is multiplying all over the place on the highway because they are fun, comfortable and affordable unlike a prius or Honda (ya kiddin me they are $$$$$$). for someone who isn't looking to spend a lot and just wants a great car to show their style, the soul is the best way to go. p.s. the reason the price is so high, is because reviewers are given every spec imagined with extra money given to them to make the car look more luxurious. I have the + and it is just what I needed and it is the best size for me.

      I'm 5'10 and 220lbs and I find the Soul to be plenty big for me. The seating position is more like in an SUV and there's plenty of shoulder room. The problem with the Soul is that you can't fit 3 in the back (of any size) and if you get it in the basic trims it's down right awful. You really have to either go all out with the gadgets and comfort or buy something more upscale. Everything rattles and hard plastics and metals are abound in the base trims. It's slow, loud and abrasive, with completely numb handling and braking. Much of that is solved in the upper trims (save the numb steering).

      HI, sorry this is late! I think it is perfect for any size. I have the middle model, I forget what it is called now. I was able to fit my mom and dad and grandmother in my back seat with enough room that they didn't touch. (and they are not the smallest with the most respect) I am 5-7 and it is immensely comfortable, now hoever my 6'4 friends fit in the back seat perfectly fine with a lot of room and in the front as well.

    The Honda Fit is the only other MPV in the U.S. market which competes with the Kia Soul. The Soul is a subcompact vehicle, and should not have been compared to compact vehicles like the aforementioned Honda Civic, Subaru Crosstrek, Toyota Prius, nor the VW Golf. It's interesting that you said the seats are too high, because my petite 5'2" tall wife thought our old Mazda CX7 with over 8" of ground clearance was too high, and the Soul's seats are just right. She even prefers them over the Accord.

    • @georgelurye6274
      @georgelurye6274 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So aside from your personal opinion, what proof do you have for the Soul being a sub-compact and not compact? Did you check the dimensions? I'll bet you haven't.

  • @D______
    @D______ 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Here is my Kia experience. Anyone in my position has encountered the same thing from Kia. If you cannot supply them with up to date maintenance records on your vehicle they will not cover it. So for instance, if you change your own oil you're screwed. Might work if you saved all your receipts but very few people are in the habit of saving receipts of them doing their own oil changes. This ploy Kia uses is well documented if you want to look it up, I have, and it’s out there. Also my car would be covered under the SC147 recall as the symptoms of my engine seizing up (engine needs replaced) followed the exact same symptomology as those the manufacturing defect notes in the recall. The recall notice even appears on my Carfax report. Again you can find all the recall information online. The reason my car isn't part of the SC147 recall according to Kia is because it is MPI instead of GDI. All the rest of the engine is the exact same, 2.4L theta II. Kia says that because my car uses a different kind of fuel injection method that it cannot be affected by the metal filings left in the engine block which is what the SC147 recall is all about. That's totally absurd on its face but that's Kia's position.
    The vehicles Kia did recall was done after many government threats as well as numerous lawsuits brought by disgruntled Kia owners for which there are many. Kia's mother company, Hyundai actually recalled their vehicles for the same problem immediately when the issue was discovered. It took Kia several years later to admit to the problem and issue a recall even though they were well aware of the problem. Where was Kia's concern for people being killed due to this manufacturing defect? A car having its engine seize up on the interstate would be something that would concern most companies immediately but not Kia. Unless Kia completely changes the way it does business they will continue to cost consumers thousands of dollars for defective cars and probably end up killing people due to their own negligence.
    I had to argue, write emails, file complaints with various entities, etc just to get Kia to actually LOOK at my engine at no cost to me to determine the how and why of the engine failure. Kia refused to cover my car even though it is under warranty and furthermore refused to even LOOK at my car to see what caused the failure. I'm still waiting for a callback from Kia with their assessment. Kia actually agreed to take my valve cover off to take a look at my car once I complained as high up as I could to Kia. This was after several months of my car sitting dead on the Auffenberg Kia lot in Metro east St Louis. Kia actually told me I'd have to pay $1500 up front to have my engine failure looked into initially. My constant pressure on Kia finally got them to say they would take my valve cover off for no fee which costs Kia less than $50 in labor. Kia had no desire whatsoever to know what caused my engine to seize up. Their ONLY concern was to avoid any acknowledgement of any responsibility or liability. Kia already knew what caused the engine to fail. The same thing that happened to hundreds of thousands of the same engines made by Kia and Hyundai. It was the exact same problem as the Kia SC147 recall. Taking the valve cover off will not help. There was no oil leak. No oil smell. Never any indication of any problem with the valve cover. It's simply a ploy for Kia to say we looked at your engine and it's your fault. Who would trust their assessment at this point anyway? I'm out thousands of dollars I still owe on a car without a working engine. Don't you think any car maker worth a darn would want to know why one of their vehicles engines just seized up on the highway? Kia's been super lucky so far no one has died due to their negligence.
    Additionally a co-worker of mine had a problem with his Kia and will not buy one again either. For his Kia the car required a specific oil filter made and installed by Kia and if that was not used the engine fails. He was never told this when he purchased the vehicle. His insurance successfully sued Kia for over $7,000 for his engine failure. Unfortunately my insurance doesn't cover mechanical issues.
    Ever wonder why your Kia never quite gets the gas mileage it was rated to get? Kia has also paid out for a class action lawsuit because they lied about the MPG of many of their models. The very MPG rating that many people base a large percentage of their purchase decision on. Yeah, Kia lied about that too but kept it hush hush. You can find the information online if you look for it.
    I had my car into the dealership (Auffenberg) several times before the engine failure telling them something is bad wrong with the car. The Kia service department ran every kind of computer diagnostic and could find no reason for the problems which included knocking, major loss of power, major loss of fuel economy and car dying at both idle and speed. Check engine light was always on and every sensor it said was malfunctioning was replaced and it didn't help. Unfortunately I could not leave my car with Kia. Kia wouldn't supply me with a free rental. They said it was against company policy. My step daughter was dying needing a second liver transplant as all this was going on and I couldn't be without that vehicle. With only one vehicle (other than the Kia) I wouldn't be able to get to work or my step daughter wouldn't be able to be cared for properly. I told Kia this and still they refused to get me a rental while they actually got to the root of my car problem and addressed it. Instead they said sorry to hear that, we can't find any problem with your car. They actually let me leave with a car they KNEW was dangerous and about to fail. They didn't care that my family was going through a serious medical situation with my step daughter and the car behaving as it was only increased the stress on my entire family during this time. Fortunately my step daughter got her transplant just in time and is doing ok now. Not only did Kia sell me a defective product but all this happened as our family is going through the stress of a child being deathly ill, lots of additional costs for medical related expenses and Kia was told this and didn't care. Kia added thousands of dollars to my already stressed finances by selling me a defective vehicle.
    But it gets even better. The Kia rep in Arizona named Steve that handles my case and many others actually told me on the phone that some of Kia's cars die early and that's just the way it is. He insisted all other car manufacturers have the same problem and also refuse to repair the vehicles leaving their customers screwed too. That's certainly not my experience nor that of anyone I know. Steve at Kia flat out told me Kia isn't going to pay and I'm out of luck because I got a bad Kia and have to eat it. That's what he said. That's Kia’s customer service that said that to me.
    I have to shake my head and laugh every time I call Kia and their recording says "Rated #1 in initial quality 2 years in a row!" Yeah, and dies in 78,000 miles and Kia refuses to make a full recall or honor it's warranty. You won't see Kia winning any customer service awards or vehicle longevity awards.
    My advice to anyone that has a Kia (ESPECIALLY if it's a 2.4L) is to trade it in and get something other than a Kia before it dies and your left paying off a car that doesn't run. I liked Kia at one time or I wouldn't have bought one. What I've found out since has opened my eyes to the quality of their vehicles and their denials of their own manufacturing defects even if it could cost lives or severely screw consumers over financially. Buying a Kia might make you think you're getting more quality for less money but it's all based upon lies and cover-ups. That is my Kia experience and it's the WORST experience I've had with any company on any level at any time in my 31 (47 - 16) years of driving cars.

    • @georgelurye6274
      @georgelurye6274 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It sure can. First off, the warranty is just 5/50,000 for the second owner and if you look at reviews of Hyundais/Kias online you'll find that it is the company policy to reject almost every warranty claim, with disregard to what the issue is, in hopes that the owner will just pay out of pocket. Just about everything gets a response of "regular wear and tear". That's how Hyundai/Kia still makes money while offering that warranty. It isn't actually a thing. I have a friend who is a manger of his family's chain of dealerships (Nissan, Toyota, Hyundai, Chrysler/Jeep, and Honda) and he told me that almost all his Hyundai claims end up getting rejected. He's actually very frustrated with all the crap he has to deal from angry owners. They're now looking for a new buyer for the Hyundai store.

    I bought a 2016 Kia Soul base model with the M/T. Remote keyless entry is an option on this. What is involved with enabling this option? Also when I went to insure this, I just about had sticker shock when my premiums just about doubled. I ask my insurance person what was going on and he told me that it was becasue the Kia Soul was one of the Kia models that were easily stolen, joy ridden and trashed. Some insurance companies won't even insure these, and some will not renew policies.

      The 2nd Gen xB rides lower and gets even worse gas mileage. Still, it's extremely reliable and looks a lot better if you get it in the right color(White, Red, Tan). It all depends on what fits you best. I would buy a used Kia Soul and see how you like it because it might be a car you just want for a year or so and then move on to something that rides and drives better like the Mazda 3 hatchback or a Honda Civic Sport.

    AWD?? Winter tires! Weigh less, cost less, and work better. When are these folks going to get over their AWD obsession?
    VW Golf or Honda Civic? Let me explain, fella. The Golf feels like a desert inside. Boring instrument panel, just a bore to drive.
    It also gets blown around quite a bit by crosswinds, why I can't explain. The seat is also lower, Soul seat is at about 27", Golf IIRC is 22-22.5". Honda Civic seat is 20" off the ground, these are all matters to consider if ingress-egress is something you are concerned with.
    I liked the Civic drivetrain the best of these three by a good margin, but its on-the-ground chair was a deal killer. I found the stock Golf=Boredom, Inc. and would not consider one. Also VW reliability is an issue. A BIG issue.
    KIA has the biggest warranty by a long shot, and the best access to the cargo hold. I've owned a Golf, two Souls, three Accords but no Civics. I traded the Golf early because window and lock systems kept going kaput, and it had a mere 2/24 B-B warranty. Bye!
    Buy what you like, but this guy misses a lot in his assessment.

      It's the best car I have ever owned. There are so many little features that make the experience great. The engine (v4) is suprisngly powerful for a four cylinder, and two drive modes. The fuel economy is actually better than my old Ford Focus, a much less roomy car. The Bluetooth radio is really nice, as well as the sound system. The hatchback cargo area is really useful with the ability to easily drop the backseats down. The steering wheel has a ton of hands free buttons for radio and calls (I don't have Siri but its there).
      I love it.

    A little car? I have to disagree.. I'm a tall dude, and the 'cube' shape means a very high ceiling in the car. Rear seat passengers have tons of leg room without the driver having to move up, I have long legs and can sit comfortably in the back seat. In addition to this, the cargo area, while not huge, is pretty spacious and even more so if you put the backseats down.
    Also, I've found the fuel economy to be great, especially when "Eco" mode is active.. which the reviewer fails to mention. Also "it's hard to see out the back window unless you use the back up camera".. sounds like you just answered your own question there. Just use the camera.

    I have watched your reviews on both the Soul and the Niro. Your claimed gas mileage from your tests are the lowest of all other reviews I have watched, and by quite substantial amounts too!. How do you drive? A kia Niro is a high fuel economey car and I didn't even get that low of MPG on a harsh test drive at the local dealer. Do you drive with two feet? you know like and old woman that has the gas down to the floor and when you want to go faster you let up on the brake? LOL Seriously I can't figure out how you manage such low fuel economey... I suggest people check fueleconomey.gov for real world owner reports for REALISTIC fuel consumption of a vehicle in different driving conditions.

      I rent a car every week for work and drive it 1,000 to 1,500 miles before turning it back in. I have rented a number of Souls over the years and find it to be an ideal old man's car. (I am 63 yrs.) You don't have to climb up into it, nor do you have to drop down into the driver's seat. Ingress and egress are the same as if you are sitting on a chair. The Soul is soooo easy to live with for my thousand mile trips. They don't excel in anything, but they don't have a single downside, either. Many of the other cars and SUVs I rent always have some characteristic I really hate, but the Soul is acceptable in every way. If my Corolla and Camry ever die (they run forever), I will look for a late model, low mileage Soul as my next personal ride.

      Autos are easier to drive, especially in traffic in cities and nowadays get better fuel economy.
