I saw Mercury Rev with the Flaming Lips as an opener in 1999 at SXSW. They preformed Deserters Song and Soft Bulletin that night. It doesn’t get much better than that!
i saw them play the 2nd stage at lollapalooza in the bay area trippin' balls when they were pimpin' their debut full length & it was a freakin' psychedelic tsunami of sound! next this senior citizen gets on stage approaches the mic to introduce the next band AND I'M FREAKING OUT because (thinking out loud) that dude looks exactly like Timothy Leary & the hottie trippin' next to me says; "it might have something to do with the fact that that is Timothy Leary" anyshizzle he's raving about this next band blah blah blah some group called TOOL doubtful they ever went anywhere
Remember buying Deserter's Songs when it came out on the strength of Opus 40. However, it was this track which will forever remind me that the album purchase was the best decision ever. That said, the entire album is pure quality.🙌❤🙌
@@virgindie25 How come? At its time it was universally acclaimed by critics and it saved Mercury Rev's ass from the bankruptcy. Lotsa copies were sold for an indie band like these guys. And, in words of Donahue himself, he said that he would hear them playing the record everywhere, even at the supermarket.
This was going to be their farewell song because they hadn't made it. "Those funny little plans, that never were quite right." But with this song....they made it
Maybe the most under appreciated band of their era. Every album from "Yrself Is Steam" through "All Is Dream" offers up some brilliant varieties of psychedelic ear tickling. Droning, ambient stoner waves to orchestrated, symphonic dream pop with some guitar freak outs all over. They where incredible.
Very moving. Played this for my GF when I broke up with her. So deeply touching still since I deeply loved her and she me, but couldn't go on with someone who has a personality disorder yet is such a beautiful person. We still are very very close friends even though I have another GF (who btw supports our friendship 100%). A beautiful song, fitting to the memories I have of her.
Tell me about it, i ended my relationship with a bipolar woman about a year ago, i got her into Mercury Rev and Mogwai and she sent me the link to this video and described in detail what we were doing and where we were headed when this song was playing in my car, sadly because of her violent and self harming outburst i cant be friends with her...i know im far from perfect, but no matter how many women have come and gone, i am flooded with thoughts of her and how at one point i couldnt see myself apart from her
@@seblo8462 You guys are beautiful. It is hard to describe what this song sounds like to many people. The only people who know where the edge is are those who have gone past it. Wishing you well.
Was already a huge fan of this song but then yesterday I heard Mercury Rev on SiriusXM The Loft Sessions live - and live was WOW, so I found this live recording, which blew me away, so glad I came back here.
Loved this album years ago and sadly forgot about it until I recently heard a portion of chord progressions from "holes" on a comedy show of all places. No TH-cam back then. And never saw MR live. Now seeing this done live is just breathtaking! Such a different and subdued way from the studio albums amazing arrangement of strings, woodwinds, and brass. This was an amazing performance made all the more amazing by the small applause afterwards. Not out lack of appreciation, but from a very select few who got to see this live on Jools Holland.
Deserter Songs is The best album ever been. Ara ho dic en català per que m'entengui tothom. DS es el millor disc que he escoltat mai. Moltes gràcies senyors de Mercury Rev.

haha. Your comment reminds me when my dad saw the album in the christmas '2000 (I requested the album to my uncle for christmas) and he said "canciones del desierto" (songs of the desert). We're argentinians, we speak spanish. Years later I discovered that deserter's is not desert. Hahaha!
@liamofaolian why is someone an asshole if they don't like a song? This is one of my favourite songs by one of my favourite bands, but everyone is entitled to an opinion.

Seeing Jon Donahue in the Lips in the late 80's, might've been cooler.
Flaming lips aswell . What a night
You lucky. It only lacked Spiritualized and Yo La Tengo to get lost in clouds forever.
I envy you…

I’ve totally lost count of the number of times I’ve listened to this beautiful song. Forever grateful Mercury Rev 🙏
This is absolutely one of the greatest songs ever written.
From one of the greatest albums ever made....
infravalorado :(
Indeed. It is a very underrated beautiful piece of art.

The late nineties for me!
The Secret Migration gets too much flak. It was a great album
Made my neck hair stand up when I first hear this live. Mega.
That solo at the end.. unforgettable!! Stunning tune

Sometimes a piece of work comes along that just makes sense of everything. I heard this for the first time on this show.
That was 21 years ago. "Deserter's Songs" was released 21 years ago on 29 th September 1998.
Lasgeaux cave art is around 15,000 years old.

A great moment in time where you'd hear chords like these from bands. Good at 240p but wish it was clearer.
Dude you must be the only one with his eyes still open!
What a song.
What a great song... love it !
Stunning
beautiful song
Wow! They're excellent live.
Honestly, the vocals are crap.
Stunning!never get tired of this
beautiful tune
❤why is this so underplayed??❤🎶🙏🌟
Thank fuck Jools didn't play any boogie fucking woogie through it. We have a lot to be thankful for.
Ha ha, doesn't lend itself to boogie woogie, even Jools knows when to step back. Let melancholy eat us.
che bello! Finalmente un video live decente di questa canzone!

It's impossible to be in a bad mood listening to this song.

The name of the album is Deserter's Songs. Very different meaning from the incorrect title in the description.

is this dream pop ?
The quality is a bit low, but is that the Russo brothers on bass and keys? Good dudes.
Good eye
lol at the bubble machines
So did Wayne Coyne emulate this dude’s voice or is it the other way around?
They were in the same band together for quit a while. Probably mutual inspiration.
Grasshopper shreds the saw solo!

Well this deserves a little better quality than this, hahaha. God, this is like a copy of a copy of a copy of a vhs tape.
